So I give design to sony. There really is nothing earth shattering about the 360's design. The first one was an Airconditioner with a tennis ball ontop of it. And the 360 has the PS2's figure if anything. There is nothing orginal about the 360's design. I personal think the nicest lookin next gen console is the wii. Now if only that black one was actually in production.

First of all, Shrinking the PS3 is not anything different than what Sony has done before and the PS2 did fine ( all most bought a PS2 during the grateful slim down). In order to keep cost down the Xbox and PS3 must stay competitive with each other as well as the PC market - they must keep up with technology. By the end of 2008/Beginning 2009 it shouldn't be two hard for someone to buy a DX10 PC for $600 - $800 that will blow the casings off the PS3 or Xbox 360. The days of 5 years consoles are over. Technology is taking a big leap in the next 2-5 years. Not just in die size but the number of processors as well as other things (like hard drive size and cost) should go down. (can only imagine what the cost of Nvidia's 2006/2007 DX10 cards will be in 2008/2009 or what a low end quad processor would cost in two years - just look at low end duel processors to get a hint of what is in store for PC users in two years).

I'll repeat it again.... The days of 5 year consoles is over!

I hope they work on the design of the PS3 the thing is god ugly except in just one angle that's why it's always turned to the side when shown.

I guess it's just my opinion that the PS3 looks funky with it's silly looking dome and the funky stand like base it's got. The 360 has the better shape with it's futuristic shape clean work of art style.

Kind of strange Sony would be anouncing this so earily when they could use this as a future cash cow if things are not working out.

There is a big difference between the ps2's slimline and this one. The ps2 slimline came out 5-7 years after the original ps2. This one comes out just an year after the original ps3. Sounds more like a desperate move for Sony as they try to lower the cost ASAP.

slimming the ps3 down will be done for 2 reasons.
1 - to save money aka make money on consoles sold. cheaper internals, less plastics involved, etc will save a company money which would be the reason enough to do a redesign
2 - to boost demand with a new look, 'better' fresher design, & ultimately increase sales. tons of companies do it now with the same product new look scheme. if sales aren't doing so great, then why not boost them up by changing what people don't like. i expected this since sony already did it with the prior systems, but i didn't think news of a slimmer ps3 would be announced so early. my bet would have been at least 1.5-2yrs into the life of the ps3 before it went on a slimfast diet
i wonder sometimes how many of you fail to realize the basics of business and continue preaching your brand loyalty bs. a slimmer ps3 isn't going to do anything different that the current ps3 can do.

and cannot find where Sony actually said that it is coming out soon. Of course they are working on a smaller one. They don't appear over night. It takes time. Does it mean it will be out in June or even this year? No.

Anyway, it took the PS2 at least 4 years before the slim came out. However, the innards shrunk drastically up until that time but the shell remained the same. This will also happen to the PS3. The innards will shrink and the outside will remain the same. They won't release a slimmer case for probably the same amount of time as the PS2.

One of the many lessons that Microsoft learned by releasing their first Xbox video game console was that licensing most of the internal components for the system effectively limited their ability to redesign the console, as well as reduce costs overtime.

This business model, coupled by the fact that Microsoft chose to use a Intel based CPU (rather than the Power PC architectured CPU that have traditionally been used by console's in the past) is what lead some observers to comment on the fact that the first Xbox was basically just a PC disguised as a console.

Obviously when one looks at the business model used in the design of the 360 one can see that Microsoft has more than learned from it's mistakes -- the company has essentially taken the lead with respect custom engineering every single component of the system and owning the rights to almost every part of the console. This effectively gives Microsoft more bargaining power with respect to dealing with the various hardware manufacturer’s because they can now take the designs for the components and have makers competitively bid on the contracts, rather than be forced into the profit maximizing initiative of one exclusive manufacturer. Of course since Sony has manufactured most of their components in the previous two Playstation’s they have naturally been able to internalize these cost cutting measures and this has naturally lead to smaller, and cheaper redesign's in the past.

With the 360, Microsoft will now be able to compete with this business model and has the ability to replace existing components with cheaper and more streamlined components - via ongoing redesigns fo primary component pieces. As mentioned above: I believe that the "company has essentially taken the lead with respect custom engineering every single component" because Microsoft has far superior engineering expertise and a related ability to design their console based on their leading role as the world's foremost software development facilitator - with respect to their advanced foresight into future Direct X, shader models, and other Windows Graphic Foundation standards.

You see ATI and NVIDIA didn't just decide to switch to unified shader architectured GPU's because they offer significant performance increases - rather this change was directly forced upon on them under the auspiciousness of Microsoft and the new implementation of Direct X10, shader model 4.0, and other WGF 2.0 standards. Sony can talk "Cell this" and "Cell that" all they want but I guarantee you that Microsoft probably knew better than Sony's Playstation development team did (early on) what the Cell was capable of and Microsoft was able to effectively beat Sony's best efforts a year earlier to market with their unique ability engineer to most efficient and well thought out console ever produced!

Trust me when I say that Sony's business model of first utilizing mostly existing components from their other divisions as a method of internal cross-subsidization and then second engineering the console based on these forced architectural adaptations will not be able to compete with Microsoft's business model of putting performance first and engineering with no attachment to inferior hardware solutions and their leading position in the development of industry software development tools.

I mean why do you think the Playstation platforms have always been so difficult to develop for? ...It's because they were developed for the primary purpose of cross-subsidizing Sony's other divisions and not engineered solely on the premise of acting as the best agent for the consumer. Of course Sony could always get away with this via "Buy-In Theory" marketing campaigns of arrogance and over-hyping the power of their systems - competing against the likes of Nintendo and Sega but they will not be able to get away with this in an industry that now has Microsoft in direct competition!

Of course for many people like myself (a techie and an economist) the forced participation of cross-subsidizing Sony's other hardware endeavours has become relative to the alternative offering put forward by Microsoft in the 360. I believe that Microsoft has acted as a better agent on behalf of the consumer when designing their console and that their business model is far superior to Sony's going into this generation.

It is my belief that Sony will need a whole lot more than just a slimmed down version of the PS3, in order to compete with Microsoft this gen and that Sony may want to take Valve's advice because relative to the 360; they are effectively competing with an inferior miss-mash of expensive components that give more credence to Sony's ambitions of cross-subsidized grandeur than it does as conceived value for a consumer base that is becoming increasingly more knowledgable and wary of Sony’s promises! At this point they should be more concerned with the price!

All I know is lets just remember all the complaining and dissing Sony fanboys did back acouple days ago with that Black Box hoax. Now it seems that Sony is pulling the same B.S., & I personally think its hilarious.

ahahah I always wanted to say that. Anyways ummm... guys why all the excitement. Im no tech junkie but im pretty sure that t for the near future are they are reducing 60nm Cell to a 45nm version. To reduce heat and save production costs. Thats whats been confirmed right. I highly doubt a PS3 redesign but ever if there is it wont be anytime soon. Its not like Sony is adding a HDMI outlet or Adding a built in Next-Gen format drive or changing the system color to Glossy Black. I think a black box, or smaller ps3 would be a great thing.... Just not right now. Theses systems are equal to car/house payments. To go out, and spend the night on the cold crib of the nearest Best Buy to buy a hot new console, only to find out a year and some change later a smaller console is coming out is plan crazy. Let us at least get warm to the system before we go out and spend some more money.

sony, is actually one of my favorite hardware manufacturers, they have always been the one to set the standard for making affordable high-end electronics, and reducing their physical size. Take HD camcorders for example, I am getting the sony HC3 or HC5 sometime soon, sony really does make quality stuff most the time, these camcorders are real small, sleek design, and beat the $3000-$4000 "professional" huge camcorders, which actually suck in quality, and deliver as bad of quality if not worse than Hi8 camcorders (which is horrible). the sony HD camcorders are bloody brilliant, they had one hooked up to and HDTV at bestbuy, and i got t mess with it--it was beautiful!!! the picture quality was so clear, so professional, cinematic!!! I cannot wait to use this camcorder for the movie im makin!!!

This may seem like a shock to certain ppl *cough* DJ *cough*, but I actually do like sony a lot. Its just that ALL companies have a big screw up once in a while, in sony's case, the ps3, but other than that, theyre good.

What up people!! This is my first post here. I own a ps3 and i have owned almost every gaming brand eccept Xbox. I have to say that i was VERY close to buy an xbox 360 this generation after i tried Gears of War on a standard tv and it looked almost perfect. Even if you are a PS3 Fanboy as you guys call them or just like the platform, you have to accept the fact, that GOW is what every gamer ,looking for real gen games, was expecting from a game this time, even if it was release a year later.. I hope that ps3 after some time can bring us a game almost similar to this one in graphics and gameplay.

Even after i played GOW and Rainbow Six vegas, which graphics i didn't like, i saw a ps3 available on gamestop and went right to it and bought it, because that's what i like and i'm confident that good games will come for us ps3 owners to enjoy them as we should.

On the Topic, well Slim is almost always good. Well at least on electronics. What is the percent of people who are buying CRT tv's right now? i don't know, but i don't think it raises 20% (not refering to screen inches). If you had the chance to buy a smaller sound system with the same power and price of the bigger one? which one would you consider?

Sony are not gonna release a slimdown version of the PS3 anytime soon ( maybe in 2009-2010 ) and if they do "SO WHAT !" . By the time it comes Europe will have put the PS3 firmly in its place and games taking better advantage of the hardware will be emerging well before the slimdown version arrives so owners of the older model wont give a damn because the hardware will still be the same only smaller and the gaming experience will be mostly if not all what they wanted from the PS3 anyway.

My PS3 functions perfectly and yeah it's a bit of a boat but if I wanted small I'd have got a PSP... My Xbox 360 sounds like a frickin' Monster Truck on steroids so much so that I can't play it when my kids are sleeping...

And why has this thread turned into a "Flame War". 90% of the comments are about which console looks better. WOW. If they slim it down, thats great. Just like if they give 360 gamers a "new" black console with a bigger hard drive and quiet dvd9 drive with hdmi built in for only 70 dollars more. Its all good news. None of the "new" editions effect your core gaming experience. So, choice is "great". Which console looks better is silly to even discuss.

Sorry Top Gamer, but there is a big difference between just changing the design and adding new stuff. If MS will really release such a version all earlier 360 buyers should feel betrayed as they don't have HDMI. I remember very well your claims there will be a 360 HDMI cable, so where is it? Why is MS experimenting on a 360 with a HDMI port and not just a HDMI cable? Haha buddy I told you so, a simple HDMI cable is not possible, cause 360 has only analog ports. Looks like I pwned you once again, I knew it all the way, just waited for the reallity teaching you. Next time you better inform yourself before you make some claims ;-)

What I stated about volume of the Xbox 360 HD was a slight exaggeration (obviously it's not as loud as a Monster Truck....cmon surely you must have realized that...)

However, if you own an Xbox 360 then you KNOW it's not the quietest machine in existence....

Furthermore if you read my comments in another thread ("Xbox 360 slams Playstation 3 again?") You'll note that I enjoy both my systems... so I'm quite perplexed by your claims of fanboyism (or fanboi as you would attempt to spell it)...

An HDMI cable and 120 gig hard drive WILL be sold seperately as well. So early adopters of the 360 "WILL NOT" feel left out. Once again for those who don't understand the simple concepts of "GOOD" business. When the 360 launches the "NEW" black version with HDMI and the 120 gig hard drive for 470....MS will release a seperate HDMI cable and 120 gig hard drive. Its really common sense. MS announced prior to the initial 360 launch that they had the ability to release hdmi/DVI cables in the future when the market called for it. The reason they haven't released them thusfar is because as of "RIGHT NOW"...hdmi has a less than 5% market share. The perfect time to release such a cable would be when they simultaniously release a Super Premium 360...New color, hdmi port, and 120 gig hard drive. All for less than the 20 gig ps3. WOW... MS not releasing the 120 gig hard drive and hdmi cables seperately isn't even an option. Though Sony ONLY fanboys hope and pray MS would make such a blunder. ha ha ha ha ha...

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
