What is Sony’s Project Q actually for?

What does Project Q bring to the table? And why is Sony investing in Remote Play with a dedicated device now, 17 years in?

Jin_Sakai1098d ago

I hate to say it but this thing is gonna flop hard.

blackblades1098d ago

Its just a option, they probably isn't expecting much sales themselves. It'll just be there for people that wanna play on a limited range handheld.

EvertonFC1097d ago (Edited 1097d ago )

Exactly, Sony have the data and they think 10/20/30m in total sales is worth it selling the hardware at a profit ie; £30X30m ain't bad at the end of the day.
People on here think it's going up against the switch or something pmsl.

VenomUK1097d ago (Edited 1097d ago )

I don't get why people are talking about this like it's a new console - it's an optional peripheral!

blackblades1097d ago

@EvertonFC
IDK about that much I was thinking 5mil maybe 10mil max

@VenomUK
Ikr they getting mad ar Sony for it etc like its an optional device. It may not be for them but as optional add on device other would probably like it. I would love it just to play smaller games on it or other games that feels like its plays better as a handheld.

Rhythmattic1097d ago

Black..
Agreed, But cheaper options exist... And in many a case, the cheaper is even a better option..
Sony has created a conundrum.... As to why?

outsider16241096d ago (Edited 1096d ago )

They could have atleast change the colour of the screen bezel to white to match the controllers. This thing looks ugly lol.

Na it will help the un and make a new report

The report reveals the annual value of global e-waste as over $62.5 billion, more than the GDP of most countries. More than 44 million tonnes of electronic and electrical waste was produced globally in 2017

How is it different than using your mobile phone and a backbone? And it’s even more of a bummer that it has to be on the same network as your PS5. I was figuring this could be like a Switch Lite or something where you could play games like you do through xCloud, but nope it’s just remote play for uh… people who don’t have a mobile phone? 🤷‍♂️

Greg28011097d ago

I can now use my phone for other things instead of using it for cloud gaming 🤷‍♂️ xD

CrimsonWing691097d ago (Edited 1097d ago )

@Greg2801

I mean, there is that…

TheCaptainKuchiki1097d ago (Edited 1097d ago )

It does NOT have to be on the same wifi. Why does this lie keeps spreading around? Don't nobody read the articles they're commenting on anymore??
It works the same way as Remote Play as always worked, on any wifi but it has to be a good wifi for minimal latency.

EvertonFC1097d ago (Edited 1097d ago )

Battery life practically dead after an 1hr on a phone and phone not feeling like it's gonna melt after 30 mins

Babadook71097d ago

Pretty sure it will use their gaikai cloud gaming also.

blackblades1097d ago (Edited 1097d ago )

Steam deck is still top device to get for remote play among steam and many other ways to play. Phone and backbone is good option to play remote play and Android games, emulators but best if you get a good smart phone that's not your main for everyday use. I am curious of what its actually able to achieve like hacking.

King_Noctis1097d ago

@Everton

What phone are you using? Streaming does not consume the battery that much nor make it hotter than say, stream a movie on Netflix. You aren’t running the game natively.

toyzombie1096d ago

Dude... it doesn't have to be on the same network. As long as the PS5 is connected to the internet you can log into it via remote play.

CrimsonWing691096d ago

Can people explain to me how Remote Play works?

When I look it up this is what Sony officially says:

https://www.sony.com/electr...

“You must connect the PS4 Remote Play, the PS4™ console, and the Xperia™ device to the same Wi-Fi® network. It is not recommended to use outdoor or open Wi-Fi® connections. You can't use a mobile data connection.”

So how are you guys using remote play on different networks?

VariantAEC1084d ago

For starters laying on your back in bed with the threat of your phone falling onto your face becomes a thing of the past.
Also you can use your phone the way it's intended while using this thing at the same time!
If this offers a DIRECT connection (no WiFi router required) I can see this doing ok as a bedside gaming companion. Kind of like the Switch only playing graphically demanding games at 60FPS possibly in 1080p to boot.

Like I said I can imagine this doing ok as an optional peripheral to PS5. If they can get this thing under $200 (like $149.99) it might actually sell quite well. Unfortunately I really see this thing costing about as much as the PS DualSense Edge... so maybe it won't sell that well even as an option and if it does absolutely nothing, but stream from PS5 at that price and you can't get FULL PS5 features (that are unallowed via Remote Play on other devices), I really don't see it doing well at all.

darthv721097d ago

Ehh... I'll buy one. I got a soft spot for likely to fail tech.

Babadook71097d ago

If you think about the business model; it can’t fail. It might be unpopular but this requires 0 effort from devs.

NotoriousWhiz1097d ago

^ There is still the cost to produce. If they can't sell what they've produced at profit. That would count as failure.

Babadook71096d ago (Edited 1096d ago )

Yes. It could be a small loss to Sony depending on the margins. What I meant is it can't be a loss for those who 'buy into it'. Us gamers, who unlike the Vita, need no effort from devs for our use of the product.

EvertonFC1097d ago

I don't think Sony are looking for 50/100m sales, I think they look at it like the PS4 PRO, an option for those 10/20m players who like to play at home in bed or on the sofa when the partner is watching TV etc
There not expecting switch numbers you know, it's an option for those that do and Sony will have a rough idea how many they will sell and it'll sell at a profit.

Kekewei1097d ago (Edited 1097d ago )

It's just a peripheral. Unlike psvita it "shares" the same game library with ps5, no need for game developers to keep it alive

EverydayJoe1097d ago

I mean, I would/will buy this over a Backbone provided the price isn't outrageous.

Sonic18811096d ago

Maybe It'll be a wake up call for Sony once it flops

Magog1098d ago

It makes sense at the right price. I think they could also update it to stream from the cloud down the line. Called this move almost 2 years ago.
https://n4g.com/user/blogpo...

Eonjay1097d ago

I thunk you are right. First the device is a streaming handheld. It's purpose is to allow people to stream to a device that offers dual sense functionality. It is patently obvious. The confusion seams disingenuous.

Sgt_Slaughter1097d ago

"At the right price"

This is selling for, at minimum, $300.

No way it sells well.

Magog1096d ago

It will absolutely be less expensive than that. I said $150 in my blog post but with inflation I'm now thinking $199

FallenAngel19841098d ago

This will flop harder than PSTV

just_looken1097d ago

That hurts so much i own one i was doing the switch docking before it was a thing just put the game card into my pstv and cloud transfer my save.

Pstv was also suppose to be in there tv's so much wasted potential

EvertonFC1097d ago

Pstv was actually alright

Snookies121097d ago (Edited 1097d ago )

Hey... I made some good money off selling my PSTV when it became rare, lol. But yes, I agree this thing is a bust right out of the gate. Don't know what they were thinking with this one. Also, the fact that it was just thrown into the showcase at a random moment was a bad choice. They should have given it it's own announcement, or placed it at the beginning/end of the showcase for more impact.

GamingSinceForever1097d ago

It’ll all come down to performance. The more responsive it is the better its chances of success.

repsahj1097d ago

simple. For those who want it.

Pyrofire951097d ago

What kinds of people and is there enough of them?
Nothing exists for nothing.
What big problem is this solving?
How is it better than remote play with the Dual Sense you already have and the phone you already have?
It's so much more complicated.

Profchaos1097d ago

My first thought is kids with the ps5 connected to the family tv I mean way way back in the early 90s my parents brought a 30 cm tv for me to play nes on rather than take over the family tv all the time so I see that being a sales point pretty niche one but still

raWfodog1097d ago

Exactly, I never think of options as a negative. Just like with the Dualsense Edge. No way in hell I’m paying $200 for a controller but a good option for those that would.
