Can A Console Be Great Without Great Games?

How far can backwards compatibility and Game Pass carry Microsoft?

I agree, the games are what makes a console shine. And from a technical pov, the series hardware is really well made. They just need studios that have their hands wrapped around the hardware to make it work. Just simply have 'the most powerful hardware" does not a great game make. You need talent and that is what Sony has the lock on.

Hell, i can remember back in the Genesis / SNES days how there were devs who could do stuff with the Genesis hardware nobody thought possible. Comparing the games released near its end to those at the beginning and it was night and day different, yet it was the exact same hardware from beginning to end. It was all about the skills of the dev. MS should spend their $$ on talent. Some would say them buying Bethesda and Activision IS them buying talent... but, there are plenty of other smaller devs who would love a crack at a big time gig. And they are more hungry than an already fat cat publisher.

Can a human being survive without food?

Its a same question

LOGICWINS1112d ago

I'd argue that Xbox has the talent (The Coalition, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Double Fine Turn 10 etc.). The issue is their business model.

MS needs to constantly pump Game Pass with "filler" Day 1 titles like Redfall and Minecraft Legends to ensure that people dont unsubscribe...thus preventing these titles from getting the polish they need.

Unless the business model changes, we're going to see more of the same.

I remember playing vectorman back on genesis and was so damn amazed. Same with superb Mario rpg. Looked so damn good at the time

EvertonFC1112d ago

MS cant get the talent, they are working at playstation or nintendo where they are happy actually making AAA.

@piroh:

???

Can human survive - *SURVIVE* - without food? No.

Can a human survive without *GOOD* Food? Anything from a gourmet meal? Only knowing bland tasteless gruel? Sadly yes.

Better to say a gourmet chef, a street cook, can become world renown for their meals. That MS seems to be a bad cook who, because they've made billions for other sources, runs a chain of restaurants it keeps open regardless how many complain about the food. That they bring in other chefs for their meals, only said meals suffer for it.

I don’t think this article is asking the correct question. People are so stuck on the old philosophy of gaming they can’t see the future for what it is. So no, a console won’t, but a service can.

gold_drake1112d ago

ehm... ifs specially asking about a co sole tho.
not a service.

giovonni1112d ago

That’s why I said what I said at the start. We all know the answer is no, but the question is really alluding to subscription service

shinoff21831112d ago

The future isn't subscription based. It's an alternative at most. Tell that to the devs that won't take ms phone calls when ms tries to get aaa 3rd party exclusives. They know that game ain't selling. Ms biggest issue is the day one games. When you develop a 200 million dollar game you need to recoup that.

giovonni1112d ago

It’s not? I’m sorry but have you seen the movie and music industry in the last three years? Better yet go to Best Buy and take a look at their cd section. EA has gone subscription based and so has Ubi. It’s only a matter of time before the rest move with in that same realm. MS biggest issue isn’t day one games because there are multiple streams of recoupable methods. The same as what music did to recoup their sales losses. These devs wont take phone calls right now, but that will change in time as the market shifts. Hell, I recall the same BS about digital gaming “ oh it’s not the future “ now look, even the ps5 pro is going discless with an option to buy a stand alone drive. Adapt or die.

I think you huffing some cheap gasoline. No console has ever sold without killer app games. Microsoft is trying to kick over the entire apple cart and they not getting their way, thank God. They had the winning recipe in the OG and initial 360 years but are where they are because of their greed and incompetence. They too insanely obsessed on trying to become the leader that they are not looking and learning what it takes to sell consoles…. and that’s games my friend. It has been and WILL always be the case. It’s the console exclusives and their quality that define a worth of a console.

giovonni1112d ago

But yet other companies are slowly following suit. The fact that you missed ever piece of fact I listed says a lot. And the fact that you’re bring up 20 to 15 years of formulas also speaks to my point in other posts we all know consoles can’t survive without good quality games. However, thats the wrong question to ask and any person with sense know what the real question is.

Giovonni

Well can a games subscription service survive without great games and killer apps in the long term?

Profchaos1112d ago

Funny enough Microsoft's foray into console gaming only survived because of an exclusive Halo if they didn't have halo the other exclusives like blinx wouldn't have saved it.

So to turn around 20 plus years later and say we just need content every quarter doesn't have to be good or anything

giovonni1112d ago (Edited 1112d ago )

@solidboy86 yes, Nintendo has a sub service. It’s all for their retro games it’s doing good of price alone. 20 dollars a year and you get access to Nintendo’s back catolog and before you say but those are classic yeah back in the day. Now as a console no like I said way back in my comment. The wrong question is being asked and it’s a setup to games a service.

If you have a thriving service then you don’t need a console. See how that works?

Ask Ouya and Stadia...they'll tell you.

Bathyj1112d ago (Edited 1112d ago )

Short answer. No.
Long answer. Noooooooooooo.

Hereandthere1112d ago

No, never. Same can be said without great exclusives also.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio22d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing22d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit22d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing22d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
