Redfall Is Arkane's Anthem

Redfall is a major departure from what Arkane Studios' is known for, and just like BioWare's Anthem, fails to live up to expectations.

I don't think it's close. There was hype behind anthem. There wasn't behind redfall. The concept of anthem was cool. Redfall is a generic, repetitive. Incomplete and dated game.

--Onilink--1107d ago (Edited 1107d ago )

You are just describing Anthem too with all those adjectives haha, just because there was initial hype doesnt mean Anthem didnt end up being all those things you described

Not to mention, the point is that its the same idea of a studio well known for making a very specific kind of game that excelled in certain aspects suddenly chasing a trend that goes completely against their expertise and coming up with something very lackluster that doesnt show any of the studio’s strengths and showing their inexperience in that other genre (Suicide Squad has all the makings of being the next Anthem and Redfall too)

Thats not to say studios should never chase something different of course, its just that it doesn’t always delivers

Noskypeno1106d ago

Devs should follow what Bungie said about making games you want to make. If it's something you want to make, you would want it to be the best it can be. If you just follow trends or money and have no passion for it, than most likely you don't care about the little details, and rush it just to get it done with. If you want to mix it up from your usual style, make sure it's what you truly believe in.

FinalFantasyFanatic1106d ago

There's alot of people who didn't even know Redfall existed until this week, as for Anthem, that game looked so good in the trailers, I'm pissed about how it turned out. At least I never pre-ordered, even my friends who bought it on release were very disappointed by how it turned out.

SullysCigar1107d ago

I don't see Redfall lasting as long as Anthem.

Anthem was expected to be good and was a shock when it launched. Redfall was expected to be 'fine', but turned out sub-par and full of bugs. All eyes will be on Starfield now if xbox is your only gaming option. If you're a multplatform gamer, chances are you didn't care about Redfall anyway after the pre-launch gameplay showed what was coming our way.

JEECE1107d ago

"Anthem was expected to be good."

I'll never understand this. Bioware was coming off of Mass Effect: Andromeda and attempting a game type well outside of their expertise. Moreover, it was clearly a far-too-late attempt to compete with Destiny.

SullysCigar1107d ago

They hyped the hell out of it though and were showing off gameplay that was actually being well-received in the run up to launch. It looked different enough to stand out. The graphis looked good too, at that point...then it released and shat the bed lol

FinalFantasyFanatic1106d ago (Edited 1106d ago )

The game trailers for Anthem looked really good, I was hyped for that Iron-man like action, but I was smart enough to not pre-order it, if we go by trailers, it understandable why Anthem was highly anticipated.

darthv721107d ago

If the idea of this piece is 'hyped games that fail to deliver'... sure, they can be compared. However there is a big difference between the two in question. One was published by Bethesda, the other by EA. Bethesda had a hands off approach, they let Arkane do their own thing while that was not the case with Anthem. Bioware had ambitions and then EA came in to make changes for all the wrong reasons. It was no wonder that Anthem was canned so quickly as all the EA mandates really turned the fans off. They never really showed up so of course EA was not going to let Bioware put any more time into trying to fix it.

At least Arkane has plans to address the issues people have reported, and Bethesda (and MS) are letting them tackle them. I feel it should not have released in the state it's in. But it's here now. We'll see if it can go the distance (at least longer than two years of support like Anthem had)

rippermcrip1107d ago

You want to blame EA for Anthem's failure and put none on Bioware. So, what's the excuse of Redfall? They failed on their own? Even if Microsoft/Bethesda was 100% hands off (which you can't say for sure).... them letting it get released.... that is on them as the publisher and owner.

darthv721107d ago

...yeah. EA made the decisions and Bioware had to follow. In the case of Arkane, they know they have issues to address and will do that. EA pulled the plug so Bioware couldn't address them. Arkane is owning their situation, EA won't own theirs even though they caused it.

rippermcrip1107d ago

Your comment about EA pulling the plug on Anthem is quite ridiculous as well. They had 2 years to fix the game (as you pointed out). They didn't release the game and then give up on it immediately. 2 years is a hell of a long time to continue supporting a game. Even if they did have a different plan to begin with. Bioware had a long long time to address the issues.

darthv721107d ago

...and there we have the point of my initial comment. EA was hands on and caused the end result of Anthem. Bethesda (and MS) are hands off and Arkane is owning their game and doing the stuff that should have been there from the beginning. Namely performance mode and fixing the other issues people have experienced.

I get the feeling you don't like EA being called out for their hand in the way things unraveled for anthem. One thing seems certain, Redfall will get the $$ and support to fix its problems whereas Anthem is no more.

rippermcrip1107d ago

How is what I said proof of EA being hands on? All this is proof of is that EA gave Bioware 2 years to fix it, and Bioware couldn't. So yes, EA stepped in and made a decision.

You got the wrong feeling, because you apparently can't understand simply things. Anthem was a disaster. That is on both the developer and the publisher. The same goes here for Redfall. The devs screwed up. Microsoft screwed up letting it get released.

You keep saying that "Arkane is owning their game" and fixing it.... what are you talking about? They haven't fixed anything yet. They haven't even ACKNOWLEDGED anything yet, which is a shame. Will they? Maybe, maybe not.

jjb19811106d ago

I remember Bioware announcing Anthem 2.0 and then unannouncing it pretty soon after. What a turd show that was.

MIDGETonSTILTS171107d ago

Anthem over promised, Redfall underwhelmed from the start.

Traecy1107d ago

I played close to 2 hrs of Redfall solo & for me it wasn't a bad experience. I didn't experience any hiccups in my playing. It seems Redfall is one of those games you either like it or you hate it. It's like one of those average budget shooters that one don't mind playing & find some fun in it. I'm going to continue playing & see how it goes. Hopefully Arkane starts rolling out updates to iron out the kinks people are complaining about.

Rockstar1107d ago

Yeah, I played it until i cleared the first firehouse,
It's not fantastic but it's not horrible. Certainly not worth full price. I had a bit of fun.

Concord, Suicide Squad, Fairgame$ And ‘Vibes-Based’ Failures

Paul Tassi: "Sony recently reiterated its commitment to live service games with one big hit last year (Helldivers 2), one big cancellation (The Last of Us Factions) and one big failure (Concord). It’s no great surprise it is continuing down this road, given the way the industry is trending and the limited shelf life of its famed single player games. But it immediately made me think of a game that Sony is allegedly releasing that I have to believe is pre-destined to fail, Fairgame$."

Alos88497d ago

Fairgame$ feels like it's destined to flop out the gate- that initial trailer felt full of that same instantly-dated 'fight The Man with a ragtag team of weirdos' energy that was prevalent in Sega's Hyenas (which they wisely cancelled.) Unlike Marathon I just don't see this standing a chance.

Nacho_Z497d ago

It will definitely flop, missed the boat by a couple of years. Agreed that Marathon has a decent chance of succeeding it looks genuinely good and interesting.

It can't be sustainable having all these expensive GaaS being DOA being balanced by the odd modest success like Helldivers. The aim is to find the new Fortnite or whatever but it's highly unlikely and seems to be a massive waste of money.

Concord and the Other Biggest Flops of This Generation

Some of the biggest success stories in the history of gaming have happened during this generation of gaming. At the same time, some of the biggest flops in the history of gaming have also happened during this generation of gaming. To this end, a few games particularly stick out as, unfortunately, disastrous flops for those who made the games, sold the games, and ultimately, for many that played the games.

What a strange, short list. There have been many more games that arrived DOA, were never released, didn’t make their budget back, etc. Why cherry pick these games? Is this list based on the size of internet hate boners?

EternalTitan614d ago

These flops have a similarity that you may not be allowed to point out.

Skull and Bones gets my vote, at this point just completely remake AC Black Flag. If the Concord developers had made the game free to play, and toned down the in your face messaging via the mods and design choices, this game could have been serviceable eventually. I never understand why pandering to 5% of your audience and giving the finger to the other 95% seems like a good idea to these people. They never seem to learn. Disney has lost 1/3rd of its value and they keep doubling down on political messaging. I don’t get it.

BlackTar187614d ago

Some of these companies are paid huge amounts of money to do this stuff. They get truck loads of money to give “the message”
By blackrock and vanguards and multiple other venture capitalists even though it’s been proven over and over they fail.

I'm not interested in this game but i think it's great they added the offline mode for those who are.

darthv72713d ago

It was okay at first... once they added the performance update it was definitely better.

TwoPicklesGood713d ago

Bury this turd. It’s only good as a reminder of what devs shouldn’t do.

mkis007713d ago

I hate the concept of an announced final update.
