With Microsoft distracted, the Xbox console experience is suffering

As Microsoft expands horizontally, is the Xbox console experience being forgotten?

They need to learn how to advertise games. That's one thing Sony does way better is advertise all their games and their console. They had a superbowl commercial where was Xbox's? People will not buy your games if they don't even know they exist the majority of gamers do not visit these type of websites or any other gaming websites for them to know like some of us do. Word of Mouth will only do so much same with a few billboards they need TV ads. They have had some great games like Hi-Fi Rush but no one knows about it outside of the hardcore gamer. Look at Redfall almost close to release and not one ad? They obviously need to make ground up they damaged the Xbox brand with the Xbox one and they are slowly regaining it but it will take time. But they need to advertise new IP not just Halo.

SullysCigar1114d ago

Yeah they should have advertised Hi-Fi Rush. Shadow dropping it is probably why it didn't make enough money, as Jeff Grubb let slip. It was a game worth advertising.

As for Redfall, I'd imagine they don't really want to draw attention to that one and are happy enough having it stay in the shadows. I expect we'll see a proper marketing push with Starfield, so not long to wait until we finally see them backing their games.

It's strange (for a company of their size), but ever since the ABK deal emerged, Microsoft seem to have really taken their eye off of the ball and (even more weirdly!) tightened up on spending. It would be nice if they could finally throw gamers some scraps that their lawyers haven't gobbled up!

Lightning771114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

"Yeah they should have advertised Hi-Fi Rush. Shadow dropping it is probably why it didn't make enough money, as Jeff Grubb let slip. It was a game worth advertising."

Yeah that got debunked already. In fact Tango game works has employed 150 ppl with 30+ new positions. Everyone walked away in disappointment once that news came out. Nobody wants to talk about that because good news isn't as exciting for Xbox these days it's only the bad stuff that's fun.

"As for Redfall, I'd imagine they don't really want to draw attention to that one and are happy enough having it stay in the shadows. I expect we'll see a proper marketing push with Starfield, so not long to wait until we finally see them backing their games."

They're marketing the game. I've seen it across FB ads, online ads as well as Snapchat. Plus having dozens of gameplay clips out there. They won't shy away from marketing because of 30fps. Starfield imo needs to get pushed like they did with early Halo games. Make it grand and in your face. In general they're marketing isn't good hasn't been for sometime. It's what happens when you go so long with no AAA games to market for your platform.

The Wood1114d ago

Clearly it didn't work 77

Godmars2901114d ago

They'd just bought their publisher. Didn't know it existed until it started getting attention.

-Foxtrot1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

@Lightning77

"Yeah that got debunked already"

By someone at MS who reacted to the story offering no evidence to back it up?

Both Jeff Grubb and Microsoft were basically "Trust Me Bro" situations

You can't believe any of them in that sense

Jin_Sakai1114d ago

“Yeah that got debunked already. In fact Tango game works has employed 150 ppl with 30+ new positions.“

I would believe Jeff Grubb or lying Greenberg any day of the week. Microsoft seen they’re capable of making a good game so they hired 150 people. Doesn’t necessarily mean sales were off the chart.

anast1114d ago

None of those games are above average. They would be wasting too much money on overhyping them.

Lightning771114d ago

"By someone at MS who reacted to the story offering no evidence to back it up?"

You mean the evidence of the team expanding its work force with in the company with 150 ppl and 30+ positions like I said? Making more money then some of the AAA of that month. 2 million+ players its out there. If the game flopped studios decrease im size not increase. Like Forspoken team getting re-Obsorbed and is back to being a support studio

Most ppl here ignore or don't know who Jeff Grubb is now is suddenly interested. Now suddenly saying he's right, go figure.

He even backtracked his statement afterwards. Also Greendburg who's job within MS is to look at numbers is way more credible than someone who isn't.

You can struggle with your own emotions on that I'm just bringing the facts like always.

343_Guilty_Spark1113d ago (Edited 1113d ago )

Steam/Xbox sales and length of time in top 10, the amount of engagement, positive news from major outlets... appear contradictory to Grub's statements.

Grub is a fairly good leaker but he occasionally gets things wrong.

Crows901113d ago

You see...somehow I dont understand why a game from arkane would be worth keeping in the shadows...Theres been more talk of every single other arkane game pre acquisition.

I've seen comments and articles like this around 10 years ago 🤔

SullysCigar1114d ago

I guess they're not interested in spending money to advertise games that are just going to fester on Gamepass, because you won't see a return on sales (as we saw with Hi-Fi Rush). They just advertise gamepass itself instead, at every opportunity. It's quite sad really.

Microsoft seem to be stuffing developer talent into the sausage meat machine, just to pump out any old gristly mess to feed to the gamepass monster. It's not sustainable and it's why they're haemorrhaging talent left and right. Developers want to be proud of their work and they don't seem to shine under the Microsoft regime.

1113d ago
Eonjay1114d ago

I remember the VGAs when people were complaining they weren't there but they had about 10 ads for GamePass. I feel like they have been advertising GamePass more than the games themselves.

The articles.and videos about game sales had me scratching my head because I was under the impression that they didn't care about sales.

Obscure_Observer1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

"They need to learn how to advertise games. That's one thing Sony does way better is advertise all their games and their console."

I agree. Sony not only advertise its games better but also do it in a very transparent way. By watching a trailer you´ll know what you see is running on actual PS5 hardware, be that in-engine cinematic, pre-alpha build or gameplay for example.

MS has been criticized for showing gameplay of Xbox games running on PCs for years! They´re well aware of what the Xbox community thinks about their stance and they simple don´t give a damn.

What´s so hard about make trailers which the games are running on an actual Xbox Series x console? It would help them to promote its more powerful console while giving us more transparency.

I think Arkane´s decision of showing Redfall videos clearly running at 60fps on PC, just to confirm later that it will only get a performance mode for Series consoles later down the line was an epic PR fiasco!

Here´s hoping Bethesda learned something from Ghost Wire Tokio and Redfall controversies and deliver a proper and clear presentation on June 11.

Hofstaderman1114d ago

My God, I’m actually agreeing with you on every point you made in this post.

RauLeCreuset1114d ago

"What´s so hard about make trailers which the games are running on an actual Xbox Series x console? It would help them to promote its more powerful console while giving us more transparency."

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest they may feel that transparency would not help them to promote the power of their console.

Sonic18811114d ago

Wait is this really Obscure_Observer 🤔 did someone hack your account?

Hofstaderman1114d ago

@Sonic1881 goodwill can only carry a supporter so far. I promise you if Sony ever pushes this NFT crap or services at the detriment of proper story driven AAA releases I would be decrying them. The reason as to why I’m vocal about XBOX is they started so strong. The learnt from the OG and carried it over to the 360 to a point then it dropped off.
Sony without competition is no good, we don’t want a repeat of their cocky 2006 attitude. Competition drives the industry and as gamers we all gain with the output in fantastic games as consoles try vying for your hard earned cash. Service subscriptions kill this, we seeing it.

S2Killinit1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

The problem with your request is that MS must be honest for that to happen, and that has never been the case with them. With MS smoke and mirrors are the norm.

Ps: Obscure bro, by any chance did you have a fall this morning? Im concerned for you. If you have hit your head on anything, have a check done.

FinalFantasyFanatic1113d ago

@Hofstaderman,
Their first 2 gens were the best, they actually brought quite alot of innovation to the market with Live/online services (multiplayer) to the point where Sony and Nintendo actually had to follow suit. You could say the Dreamcast was the first to the market with online capabilities, but Microsoft really solidified it as an important and desirable feature, also helps they had some really good bangers game-wise, especially in the 360 era.

Godmars2901114d ago

They need to learn how to make games. For consoles.

MS has never solely made games for their consoles. PC has ALWAYS been their central interest. When they've first shown off something that they have had an interest, its always been on bleeding edge PC hardware. Kinect at its best was on PC hardware. Then they built down to their consoles.

andy851114d ago

I do find it odd. I can't remember the last time I saw an Xbox ad in the UK

blackblades1113d ago

I see ps5 in t.v. shows, commericals in the back ground as well of the front runner for multiplatform games. I did see Xbox tv ad once or twice here U.S cant remember much.

Rhythmattic1113d ago (Edited 1113d ago )

But there has to be ads about xbox , surely? Afterall , its not a console anymore, its a service... Consoles are dead.... MS's narrative ..
Not a go at you, but the whole idea anyone knows (new hash?) #whatisxbox

jznrpg1114d ago

They need to learn how to make their own games and stop chasing casual 3rd party IP.

S2Killinit1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

They are not an Entertainment company. The art of making video games/stories/music composition, is NOT MS. They look for cash cows. Not make games.

1113d ago
Youngindy211113d ago

I saw a Redfall TV ad while watching Sportscenter, so they are advertising it.

Shimsok1113d ago

I have not really looked at the N4G comments section for some time, but MAN do I remember when it was Sony having issues advertising their games when it was the PS3 era and Microsoft was the one putting their ads all over the place. That was when people were so disappointed with the Playstation brand that they literally repeatedly stated they wanted to see it die, and they weren't even sure if Blu-Ray was anything more than a fad. Talk about the times changing.

ChasterMies1113d ago

Hi-Fi Rush looks cool but not AAA cool. Xbox would look weak if that is all they have against Sony’s slate of games. What else is Microsoft supposed to advertise? Redfall? Starfield coming sometime in 2023 unless it’s delayed again? What Microsoft really wants to advertise is Call of Duty. Maybe next Super Bowl.

MIDGETonSTILTS171113d ago

Why get a Super Bowl ad to repeat “The games ARE coming…”?

Rhythmattic1112d ago

"They need to learn how to advertise games"
First sentence.... Theres a history you know.

In terms of column inches, 9/10 of them for Microsoft over the past 2 years have been about court proceedings, lawsuits or acquisitions. The remainder has been "Hi-Fi Rush good" or "Redfall bad".

It's such a weak look, from a gamer's perspective, that they struggle to stay relevant through good old-fashioned hard work and great games.

GhostTurtle1113d ago (Edited 1113d ago )

The sole problem with the Xbox is leadership. Whoever is in charge needs to be fired and this goes all the way up to Phil who I think has done good for Xbox. There's absolutely 0 accountability for their studios and the structure of Xbox game releases. It's a self inflicted fucking mess...

where-eagles-dare1113d ago

Do you not see the contradiction with what you just said ?

DOMination-1113d ago

That guy is called Matt Booty. Maybe he does a lot of great stuff behind the scenes that we don't know about but the evidence so far suggests otherwise.

Before Matt, Phil was head of studios and its probably fair to say that his track record wasn't much better. Correct me if I'm wrong but he shut down Lionhead after commissioning a 4v1 Fable game that was always going to be doomed, oversaw the Kinect era, build Black Tusk and put them to work on a AAA new IP only to make them work on Gears shortly after the game was announced, created and then shut down LIFT London, MS Victoria and I believe MS Vancouver without them making a single game, let Bungie go independant, allowed the Xbox One to launch with only one non-kinect shovelware game (which was a seriously gimped/rushed Forza 5) and was responsible to the continued failure of Crackdown 3

Of course, some of that would be Don Mattrick too. But Phil Spencer is the common denominator. He promises big and talks well but he's been head now for an entire generation and people rightly are still asking the same question - where are all the Xbox games?

jznrpg1103d ago (Edited 1103d ago )

@DOMination- they should promote that guy again if he’s there because Xbox is Booty

1113d ago Replies(1)
yarbie10001114d ago

He's still trying to claim in the article that people can't find a Xbox Series S | X in stock which is just completely laughable. It's like they wanna see the truth, but the matrix still has them. Xbox just didn't start suffering recently with Microsoft focused on everything else. It's been suffering for a very long time.

thecodingart1114d ago

It’s been the same type of articles every year since the 360 era ended

ChasterMies1113d ago (Edited 1113d ago )

You mean since the 2013 E3 presentation my Don Matrick, who Microsoft fired before the console launched. The presentation was so bad, it sunk an entire generation even after Microsoft changed course on the Internet connectivity requirement, price, and Kinect 2.0.

FinalFantasyFanatic1113d ago

They never really recovered from the beginning of the Xone era, even Sony eventually got it together with the PS3 after a disastrous start to the 360/ps3 gen.

Eonjay1114d ago

Microsoft claimed back in 2021 that Xbox has never been profitable in its history. Its a loss leader. That's whybthey pushed GamePass so hard.

Another thing people fail to realize is that the purchase of Activision is more about PlayStation than Xbox. They want to use it as their new customer base.

Their plan is to get COD on PSPlus so they can absorb like half of Sony sub revenue for themselves.

Hereandthere1114d ago

100%. Xbox players hate to spend money on games.

RauLeCreuset1114d ago

In the alternate reality Windows Central lives in, "by all accounts, Xbox is more profitable and has more revenue flowing through it than ever before."

What?!

This is why they find themselves flummoxed, writing articles about bemoaning the state of Xbox.

Step 1: Stop writing shill articles and falling for PR spin.

CantThinkOfAUsername1114d ago

Microsoft was talking about console sales not net income. They said Xbox consoles have never been profitable as they were always sold at a loss, but that is mitigated by software sales which are very profitable for them. It's hard to believe they're losing money when Xbox division brings in $14-16B a year with less than half the user base of any competing console. PlayStation brings in $20-24B with double the user base and significantly more first-party games.

wiz71911114d ago

@Hereandthere I buy games all the time , gamepass doesn’t distract from that. I bought plenty of games especially through gamepass for the nice discount on the deluxes versions. A lot of ppl without Xboxes don’t realize those same games that be on gamepass still be on sale. 100% of the time it’s only the standard versions that be on GP.

blackblades1113d ago (Edited 1113d ago )

Well if Sony ban cod on there system, ms can kiss that revenue stream goodbye. Sony better hope one of those live service games actually be a hit so they 100% don't need CoD for revenue.

343_Guilty_Spark1113d ago

No amount of evidence would make you believe Microsoft. What exactly are you asking?

DickyD12261114d ago

Here in Iowa its hard to find them in a lot of shops.

jznrpg1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

Drive a couple hours north because in Minnesota I see them in every single store sitting there and it’s been that way for a long time now. Series S has been on shelves for couple years now and X has been there for some time. Even at launch the few people I knew who wanted them got them in that couple months of launch.

MS has the capacity to put produce PS5 but isn’t because they know they won’t sell. There’s a reason why PS sold 2 million last month and Xbox didn’t get close. Both are on shelves but PS5 is actually selling and being restocked

343_Guilty_Spark1113d ago

Minnesota isn't representative of every state

DickyD12261113d ago (Edited 1113d ago )

I'm not arguing the fact that if I wanted to find an Xbox I could. (I already own one along with my ps5) I was simply putting out that not every place has immediate availability.

What have they done recently that causes them to seem distracted NOW versus what they have been doing since the 360 ended? They were distracted since TV, TV, TV, Stuffing every open space with ads, and having a TV passthrough. Anymore distracted would be nigh impossible. Luckily it can only get better. Please don’t say “Hold my beer” Microsoft.

dveio11d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing11d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit11d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing11d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
