Like I said before they focus to much on FF and let the other games left to dry. They released a lot of games and most of them didn't get marketing at all. Some of them needed a little bit more budget. Also there expectations are a problems, we dont know how much there games actually sold but apparently they have high expectations. Like lower the expectations dont set it up so high that will sell around 5 mil sold.

Lexreborn21157d ago

It’s a bit insane they anticipate everything to sell as high as FF. I remember when they said Tomb Raider reboot was lackluster and turned out it had sold like 3 million units on PS3 and 360.

Like…. You guys okay over there?

porkChop1156d ago

The Tomb Raider situation was crazy. They poured something like $100M+ into advertising thinking it would be a mega seller. It was a reboot of an essentially dead franchise at that point, going for a very different direction, new Lara, etc. Great game but expecting it to just fly off the shelves was stupid.

Then they launched the sequel as a timed exclusive and released it the same day as Fallout 4. Square Enix just has no clue what they're doing. They've made so many braindead decisions.

Godmars2901156d ago

Like with FF14, they put too much money into development.

Unlike FF14, they didn't or couldn't put in more to fix its issues. Many of which had to do with story and character.

kingnick1156d ago (Edited 1156d ago )

The corporate suits have always been in control at SE, its why the company can't come close to competing with the output of Square which was a collection of talent united around their vision of making great games.

Management want exponential growth but SE has struggled with tech for some time now and anyone that has followed their games through the years would know this.

The timed exclusive deal with Microsoft for Tomb Raider was very dumb when Tomb Raider is associated with Playstation and most of the playerbase would be on Sony not Microsoft platforms.

If SE can't get their act together with their tech with Sony jointly funding development and promotion of FFXVI it might be time for SE to license another engine (likely Unreal) and just focus on other elements of game creation.

I wouldn't be surprised if FFXVI is a good to great game but misses unreal sales expectations SE set for it. SE seem to think they have the same pull they had back in the Square and early SE days but their games haven't been genre defining for a long time.

gangsta_red1157d ago

*Like lower the expectations dont set it up so high that will sell around 5 mil sold."

Unfortunately, this is probably the number needed to get a profit from production. This is the state of the gaming industry and why you see many developers sticking to only sequels to well known IPs or selling to bigger publishers.

"They released a lot of games and most of them didn't get marketing at all"

A lot of the games released were niche games, you're not going to get much marketing for games like those. And as I said in another comment, Square will probably stop making those all together or for a good while.

blackblades1156d ago

They don't need big market for them just something to let people know about the games. Theres twitter, maybe host a spotlight like how capcom just did

Crows901156d ago

Not true. The state of the market is split between common sense and brain dead expectations and costs. Lower your costs and you can still make a good game.

shinoff21831156d ago

See back in the day ff was the flagship but other games still got love. Other games still don't but its lackluster most of the time. Hell tactics ogre was barely advertised. I knew it was coming out due to checking for new sh all the time.

blackblades1156d ago (Edited 1156d ago )

A lot of there games came out so close to each other which was another problem. I seen the list on Twitter. Sep. 22, Sep 24, Oct. a couple was in November and December. Even Jan and Feb it just to many. Its like they were just throwing them out and left them to defend for themselves.

Flawlessmic1156d ago

The doom and gloom with square Enix is over done lol.

Forspoken was a dud and it's happens, exclusive or not that game would've been a failure.

Octopath traveller is reviewing really well but no one mentions that at all cause it doesn't fit the narrative.

Ff16 is gonna absolutely crush it, as will ff7r2 and pretty sure ff14 is going strong and probably the best mmo ever.

-Foxtrot1156d ago

What are you talk about

It’s not people making shit up and wanting the doom and gloom it’s literally Square Enix being idiots

Octopath is doing well but honestly I hardly hear anyone who talks about it, no one I know in massive social groups have got it

Yeah FF16 will crush it but it’s FF they always sell and relying on FF and only FF is what has gotten Square in this predicament

FinalFantasyFanatic1156d ago

I really wonder if Bravely Default is going to continue, apparently BD2 sold below expectations. Which is weird since the previous games on 3DS sold so well they were surprised people even wanted those games that emulate that classic FF experience.

neutralgamer19921156d ago

So much is on hold because of Activision deal just wait. I look at this like a sport league free agency period. Right now everyone is talking but nothing can be agreed to until the situation provides clarity

Square enix will be the first domino to fall after Activision. Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if the day the deal is announced between ms and Activision that Sony tries to steal that thunder and announce their own acquisitions

Acquisitions don't happen suddenly that's why stuff is going on behind the scenes

Bobertt1156d ago

The problem is their leadership and board are full of idiots now who don't care about games. Outside of Final Fantasy they keep pushing for dumb stuff that gamers do not want like live services, NFTs, and Web3 because they are seeking ways to make money with the least effort. They are showing they care less about making good games and more about how to find new ways to make money through them. They are trying to leave behind Japan for the West because they can make more money and that's what they tried with Forspoken but they have no idea what the West likes so they keep failing. The board is big on all the stuff we don't want them putting into games and the new guy who they elected is gonna all in on NFTs, Web3, Metaverse etc. He says his job was to look for new technologies to bring to games and 2024-2025 they expect to implement them. Square Enix is gonna become like Konami.

sadraiden1156d ago

Did they leave other games out to dry or did they release a lot of other games?

Truth is, the vast majority of their games, including FF, have been mid at best for the past decade. They charge more than full price, and now they want to put NFTs in the games.

Their problem is that they've entirely separated themselves from how people who game actually think. Japanese EA.

To continue my rant from yesterday, Square is not looking so good. They don't have faith in the Final Fantasy brand. FF16 preorders in Japan are tracking below FF7 and 15. It is clear that Square is hoping the west will carry the sales but with no day 1 launch on steam or Xbox, It not looking so good. This isn't the PS1 or 2 generation anymore. You can't get away with releasing an AAA exclusive on one platform and having strong sales. You need PC and Xbox to boost numbers. Square has lowkey damaged the expansion of the FF brand.

FF15 sold 2 million copies on Xbox. Imagine if Square bought FF14 to XB1. That is easily an extra hundreds of thousands of subs and loyalty/nostalgia for a new gen of fans to the FF brand. Like I said yesterday, Square wants to chase short term profits instead of focusing on building long term growth. The CEO over there is so short sighted and he is going to destroy that company

Goosejuice1157d ago

I still think Sony will eventually buy them out and hopefully get them on track again. They need something to happen to get them off this block chain thing they want to do for no reason.

kingnick1156d ago

If anyone does buy SE they need to clear house when it comes to management. Utterly useless and the company's lack of focus comes from the top down.

"Square Enix's latest release, Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII - Reunion made its top ten debut this week, coming in at number eight. The RPG spin-off performed particularly well on PlayStation, making up a total of 82% of the sale split across the PS4 and PS5. Switch accounted for 12% while the Xbox made up the final 6%."

A wooping 6% sales from xbox....

Xbox ain't gonna save nothing for square enix nor do they need xbox. Square needs to make better games and stop releasing crap games simple as that.

richardmmorales1156d ago

How can you expect Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion to sell well on Switch and Xbox. When the main game Final Fantasy VII Remake isn't even on those platforms? I'm surprised they even released Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion on them for that vary reason.

sadraiden1156d ago

@richardmmorales

Crisis Core and FF7 Remake aren't the same continuity. One has nothing to do with the other.

shinoff21831156d ago

Xbox has already proven Mika that it won't sell. 15 did horrible on xbox one compared. It's shown in the uk for instance it sold 80 percent on ps4. 80 percent is huge. So for exclusive rights Sony probably just offered what square mightve predicted to sell of ff16 on xbox. I'd say buy games over stop waiting for everything to go on gamepass. It's not a new trend and ms has shown it themselves. Game sales are down alot. I definitely know some xbox gamers still by games. I buy on ps and gamepass on xbox I'm just as guilty on that side. So I get it.

andy851156d ago

I mean it's PS5 only so of course it will track lower because it's been incredibly difficult to get one there but they are selling a hell of a lot of consoles now and one main reason for that will be FFXVI.

roadkillers1156d ago

FF mainline just went through a 13 year slump from the release of FFXIII to now. FFXIV was a disaster at launch and XV wasn’t what fans wanted. Not to mention the constant sequels of XIII. Excluding the remakes this is their first showing of a proper new iteration. If good, the people will come back

FinalFantasyFanatic1156d ago

I hope Square-Enix gets their crap together, but looking at recent performance and future plans... I'm not holding my breath unless they pull it off.

Stanjara1156d ago

So you want new FF on xbox...
Sadly more than 80%sales are done on PlayStation.

Just buy a PlayStation.

FinalFantasyFanatic1156d ago

Why do you people perpetuate the idea that Square-Enix needs Xbox sales where the percentage of sales from that console are so minuscule, that the company questions whether it's worth the money to port it in the first place? Especially when Xbox owners have proven time and time again that they just aren't buying these games, this is a Square-Enix issue, not a multi-platform issue.

shinoff21831156d ago

Exactly fffanatic

The exclusive deal with Sony has to more then make up for the few they'd of sold on xbox. Ms got they 3rd party exclusives deals to.

Crows901156d ago

Except you forget development costs. On Xbox they've got to release on a underpowered next gen called series s. On switch it's even worse. They'd spend much time on optimization which costs money. And even then there would be performance issues. Releasing on consoles where there aren't any gamers buying your product makes no business sense.

Their games barely get marketed...that's why.

ziggyzinfirion1156d ago

Mika I'm not sure if I'm looking at the right source here but when I look at VGCharts total sales for FFXV on Xbox One, it actually is only 1.14 Million, not 2 Million. While Playstation 4, it sold 5.07 Million, thats like almost 5x the total sales compared to Xbox.

Abracadabra1157d ago (Edited 1157d ago )

Sooner or later Sony will acquire Square.

Army_of_Darkness1156d ago

Yeah with Sony's support, funding and guidance, SE will be great again! Hopefully like the ps1/ps2 era.

shinoff21831156d ago

I'd like them to revise the the portion that should've been the second disc it's known they just slapped it together for money or time I can't remember but yea xenogears would be dope.

FinalFantasyFanatic1156d ago

I would love a remaster of the game as a PS Classic or something, and then they just remake the second disc as it's own game, but I hope Monolithsoft would get in on that (fat chance, I know). That way we still have the original experience intact and something new.

FallenAngel19841156d ago

They don’t just remake any title

A remaster is more likely than that

repsahj1156d ago

yes please! and crono trigger too!!

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio11d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing11d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit11d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing11d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

To be fair, there are also human made games that release and lack any fun at all either.

jznrpg14d ago

But all of the great games have been made by humans

jwillj2k414d ago

One is by choice, the other is a feature.

PRIMORDUS14d ago

Guild Wars 2 been playing for 14yrs, 1st beta. This is just one company I support, Arenanet and NCSoft, even though I torrent, there are a few PC companies I will buy from. "PlayStation’s Horizon MMO spin-off, Horizon Steel Frontiers." I feel this will be good, NCSoft is a good developer/publisher.

CrimsonWing6914d ago

It’s a tool. Use it elevate things and get it done faster. I’m sorry but not every game made by humans is good. If this can help things, then I fully embrace it.
