I think this can easily be answer with another question.

Will the PS3 be able to compete with "future" hardware.

Will the PS3 be able to perform better than a $149 blu-ray stand alone drive that's probably 3-5 times faster? Can the PS3 blu-ray speed upgrade via a firmware update?

When the xbox 720 comes out... will the PS3 be able to match what games will be like with only 512MB of ram vs 2-4GB of ram? or what about GPU? we are talking about only 2 years from now when the xbox 360 turns 5... which is the average console lifespan.

Future proof means many things to different people... months after the PS3 came out... the PC already started pushing things not possible on any console do to memory constrains... games like Crysis...

It's kind of dumb by early adopters to think that they are future proofing themselves by buying early... There is a reason why companies upgrade their hardware during it's lifespan...
People that were the first to buy a DVD didn't future proof.. years later they endup having the slowest DVD players in the market forcing them to buy newer models..

No electronic device is future proof... since the moment it hit the market... the companies are already planning the next version.

Never buy a game console to "future" proof your gaming.. you will be disappointed... buy it for the games it currently have... don't buy on hype over "what can be done" but what is being done... Every time the next generation of consoles come out... it proves how much of a joke the "future proof" term is... I remember Sony saying the same about the emotion chip.. and how there was nothing like it... which was going to be use for many generations... well.. Sony dropped it in favor of the cell... the fact is that no one knows what the future will be like... Some random guy can come up with some crazy idea that revolutionize anything and render useless any existing technology...

Well in the instructions manual there's a guide to use the PS3 as a Hoover board so I think it's covered.

as for technology look at GOW2 thats all i m going to say.....and look at MGS4 and it was their first game on the system.

its like a computer. just it plays ps3 games....like uncharted 2 god i cant wait...i wonder what the treasure is this time? the first storyline is by far i think the best game story line ever! i beat the first one in 1 night because the story fuc*ing sucked me in ahah.

So for the pieces of work that didn’t fit in certain areas, they were put on the back burner and used at a later date. For instance, a nonessential character’s theme had been scored, but gave too much importance to that person. The piece didn’t fit, but was suitable for a dramatic scene further on in the story with the captain’s airship transport. It had been written by Joris six months prior, and was just one example where we recycled previously conceived bar sections.

The marketing term "future proof" goes against Moores Law http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... Nothing is future proof. This is simply a term used to try and sell a product. I respect the Cell which is a modified version of the Power PC architecture that has been out for quite some time. RISC based processors have certain advantages over the x86 based systems we've been using for decades, but it also has some short comings. The Cell is another marketing term that pretty much labels the evolution of PowerPC. The triple core CPU in the Xbox 360 is also based on PowerPC architecture (both companies hired IBM to design their CPU's). I'm nt sure how one is really better than the other especially when you look at what they do. Neither is "future proof" though since technology is evolving much faster than most people think.

Does Blu-Ray make the PS3 more capable down the road? I would say it will definately help the PS3 stay somewhat competative when the next generation hits. By that time developers will have a better handle on Blu-Ray and optimize data placement to recieve the benefits added storage provides. By that time middleware will be much better and devs will be able to really test the metal of the PS3. The downside to making the PS3 "future proof" was the impact costly and difficult programming early on has caused. The delay to launch was caused by Blu-Ray manufacturing issues and games suffered for the first couple years. Devs are now starting to really understand the PS3 and make games that show it. That is a long time when you are trying sell consoles in a very competative environment. It also added to the retail price and caused a significant loss in market share.

While it is a very good possibility the PS3 will be competative with the next generation consoles that come out in a couple years, will that be enough to convince Sony to be late to the party again? I don't think so. If anything the PS3 has paved the way for the next gen by taking the hits today so the consoles of tomorrow have an easier launch.

for wireless?........if so, I would have to say that the ps3 is not future proof on at least one front. Then with each version that comes out...Sony seems to take something out.........so I would have to say that the 60gb is the only version close to being "future proof".

but looking at the above mentioned,ps3 is more future proof.while 360 will hit a wall on what can fit on a disc,ps3 doesn't have that issue.while gta4 can fit on 360's dvd,5 gta4s could fit on bluray 25gig.or using the 50gig disc,9-10 gta4s could fit on bluray.that's just too much space.THAT'S FUTURE PROOF.

the firmware that sony has been changing has made ps3 nothing like the way it launched.360 has also benefited from upgrades in firmware.but ps3 has the web browser too.that trumps 360.while 360 fans have to use the computer to stream movies from netflix,or buy tv shows.with the right sites,i can watch ALMOST the same movies for free through the ps3 web browser.i can watch almost ANY tv show using the web browser.i can watch almost ANYTHING using the web browser.

and as for the hard drive,more content can be put on the drive for ps3.microsoft wants to control what you buy with proprietary drives.but sony,suprisingly,lets you put ANY drive in the ps3 without void of warranty.that again,trumps 360 because as the drives grow,ps3's options grow.

here is one fact I can give you...

FACT: nothing is future proof.

Any technology, especially in it's first iteration (cell) will be improved upon, making it eventually inferior. The cell is already inferior to other processors based off the cell.

As far as storage mediums go, there are a lot of better solutions for gaming than blu-ray. people really underestimate variable size storage devices like flash media. There is also a great benefit to a medium that can be read with no moving parts at a much faster speed than blu-ray. People really underestimate the concept of data not being media specific. Who cares if you have a game on flash media, blu-ray, DVD, HDD, or HVD. As long as you have the game and a way to play it.

We're entering an age where people are going to be able to get this data on a whole range of things. I can get movies for my ipod at the store for example and bring them home to watch on my PC if I want.

Because it is the one making all the money and bringing a whole new market audience to the industry. Neither console has done that as well. Both 360 and PS3 have constantly had to change their consoles hardware and software to keep up. If PS3 was so future proof, then they wouldn't have to keep telling themselves that.

And what is all the fighting about. If you love gaming then play games. If you love a brand, then you are sad and you aren't really a gamer, you are a walking advertisement that doesn't get paid.

no console is future-proof, it doesn't matter how advance the cell is or how much space a blu-ray disc can hold. There are still parts of the PS3 that will be horribly outdated in a few years time.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
