Atomic Heart dev facing backlash on statement relating to Russo-Ukraine war

The developer has been criticized for refusing to name the war in its recent statement

This game has had me intrigued for ages, so I'm really hoping it's going to be great. It's a shame they reduced the scope to remove VR, at least for now, but if it's successful I'm hoping they'll reconsider.

I don't care about some random at Remedy Entertainment virtue signalling. I don't want politics and games becoming intertwined. He shouuld concentrate on his own games and mind his damn business.

Atomic Heart has been in development for quite some time and has enough to contend with without people like this trying to draw them into a political debate. Yes, the developer, Mundfish, is Russian. I don't care.

Gaming is my hobby and I sure as heck aren’t letting politics ruin my enjoyment.

VenomUK1224d ago (Edited 1224d ago )

Gamesradar and Future Publishing are despicable.

A Ukrainian citizen is entitled to have very strong feelings towards Russia because it invaded their country.

However Gamesradar a video games media outlet is playing the virtue signalling game which is 'publicly agree with us or we will call you out and publicly destroy your reputation'. Why should a company, even a Russian company, have to say anything? They are private citizens and an independent company who are not affiliated with the government -even if they accepted grants which happens in the UK with some indie studios. They don't need to prove they're on the good side. Mundfish didn't wish harm to Ukranians, they just said they don't want to get involved - not everybody wants to have companies' preach to them their values, not every company wants to share its politics. Gamesradar thinks they are being noble trying to do real journalism, but treating Russian citizens like this IS a form of racism. In the UK the organisation behind Wimbledon received a massive fine for banning Russian players and was strongly criticised.

If you're a Labour voter should your career be negatively impacted for the actions and opinions of Conservative PM Boris Johnson?
If you're a Democrat voter should your career be negatively impacted by the actions and opinions of President Trump?
If you're a Republican voter should your career be negatively impacted by the actions and opinions of President Biden?

Citizens don't always agree with their government and they certainly don't need to justify themselves to petty hacks. I don't want companies preaching anything to me, I don't even want them to tell me the time. Gamesradar has failed in journalism by trying to get involved with social activism. Not everybody thinks the same as ResetEra. Gamesradar don't preach politics, stick to what you're mediocre at - rewriting press releases.

senorfartcushion1224d ago

@venomUK

But how do YOU feel about the whole thing? It just sounds like you’re paraphrasing Youtubers paid to “disrupt” but chatting stuff they don’t even believe.

How do you feel about the situation? Because, regardless of how much you hear about it, you’re in The UK. The war doesn’t come to your door. Well… unless the population votes for it as a consequence.

VenomUK1224d ago

@SeniorFartCushion. With your question you're doing what Gamesradar is doing and is counter to the point I've just tried to illustrate. People on the internet always wanting to take a side to argue. 'How do you feel about Hogwarts Legacy' 'Where do you stand on the Russia-Ukraine war?' 'Who do you love more Joe Biden or Donald Trump?' I'm sympathetic to the people who are directly affected but to anybody else I literally couldn't give less of a shit about your feelings or your opinions or your politics. They mean nothing to me or anybody else!

If I want politics I go somewhere else for that. The only opinions I care about on N4G is games talk.

z2g1223d ago

So you’re willing to overlook the killing of innocent civilians, the raping of women, war crimes all due to an unprovoked war, so you can play video games guilt free. Wow. Capitalism has truly warped the decency of mankind.

Pretty much. I've been watching this game since 17 maybe 18 when I first read and seen a small trailer.

Things happen all the time people turn a blind eye. I can certainly do it with games. Look in their position. If they acknowledge it, bad cause they kinda are in Russia. Not acknowledging it bad cause how the world may react. It's a no win and whoever asked them that knew that prior to asking.

ChasterMies1223d ago

“He shouuld concentrate on his own games and mind his damn business.”

No one commenting here is concentrating on anything and minding their own damn business.

SullysCigar1223d ago

Is the purpose of this comments thread not to discuss the article it's attached too?

z2g1223d ago (Edited 1223d ago )

You’re kinda missing the point. They are saying Mundfish is supported by a government waging an unprovoked war and killing innocent people, including civilians, raping women and lying to their people. Would you support a game funded by ISIS? The Taliban? Not much difference here. Some things are bigger than your entertainment.

SullysCigar1223d ago

Do you own anything made in China? Does that mean you support communism?

Do you have an Apple, Microsoft Windows, or Xbox? Do you understand the history of the US in terms of miliarial conflict? Remember when they found those Weapons of Mass Destruction? Me neither.

It's all the same thing. Use your discernment and choose your moral stances wisely.

b777conehead1223d ago

So if you don’t want the game don’t buy it. This is a gaming site. If you want to get political goto twitter.

Christopher1223d ago

Even if they stood with Ukraine, saying it would get them thrown in jail as it would be a public show of support for Ukraine, which is illegal in Russia.

Your choices are to either hope they mean what they say and support them or support others by not buying their product.

Eonjay1223d ago

Mundfish is wrong here because they gaslite the situation after claiming to be politically agnostic. They could have answered the questions about funding in a way that didn't make it political.

CobraKai1223d ago

Gaming is escapism. It should be kept that way.

Xbox going multiplatofm announcement in 3..2...1...

Disagree all you want, the writing has been on the wall for a long time, this was GamePass' ultimate goal all along.

And don't think for a second that if Sony sees MS making good money doing it, that they won't soon follow suit. Nintendo too... though i see them holding out the longest.

This Ukraine shilling and twitter vitriol made me preorder it. Don't care... They weren't invaded for shit's and giggles either,.. Probably began in 2004 with first color revolution,.. and then with coup'd etat in 2014 and serious crap Ukrainian army was doing in donbas for 8 years. Western propaganda is off the charts in this conflict.

dnawesum1224d ago

What were they doing in Donbas for 8 years?

Concertoine1224d ago (Edited 1224d ago )

Russia purports that the will of the Donbas region is to be Russian since the people living there are ethnically Russian. Ukraine says thats propaganda. It’s hard to tell what’s true because both countries are willing to lie to hold that region and i doubt any unspoiled democratic vote would be allowed for the region to determine its own destiny.

But yeah, the “past 8 years” thing hes referrong to is the proxy battles between Ukraine and Russia-backed separatists in Donbas

TheLigX1223d ago (Edited 1223d ago )

Donbas has always been inhabited by Russian nationals. Meanwhile Ukrainian nazi extremists were raping and murdering the Russian population there. Both nations are full of nazis, and neither of them have a moral leg to stand on regarding this war, but damn, get your facts straight. It's a war of fascist oligarch vs imperial fascist oligarchs. Media has tricked you into giving a damn.

LucasRuinedChildhood1224d ago

Imagine someone with a functioning brain justifying the annexation of a country.

HollowIchigo251224d ago

It happens. Did Americans go crazy when Israel annexed the water-rich Golan heights from Syria? oh right you love Israel
Look at old news articles from before the Russia invasion, many called Ukraine one of the most corrupt countries in Europe not to mention their love for Nazis.

LucasRuinedChildhood1224d ago (Edited 1224d ago )

@HollowIchigo25

"oh right you love Israel"
Nope, I'm Irish and politically my country is the loudest in Europe in highlighting the mistreatment of the Palestinians, and comparing it to our own struggle against the English.

"not to mention their love for Nazis."
Lad, there's Neo-Nazi Russian militias.
https://www.latrobe.edu.au/... https://www.theguardian.com... https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

Obviously, it's absurd to claim that either Ukrainians or Russians love Nazis. We're talking about fringe, extreme groups in both cases.

Which country is led by a Jew again, btw? Putin obviously wants to annex Ukraine for its resources, and you're falling for half-assed "Denazification" propaganda.

dnawesum1223d ago

@concertoine ahh, so autoglobe is full of shit.
It's Ukrainian territory invaded by the Russian military during the Maidan revolution.
It's 100% Ukrainian.

Angyobangyo1224d ago

Sure you did bud, I bet you think you did some topG move too. Western propaganda you say, maybe go to some Weibo communist site or 4chan then if you don’t like the facts. Listening to you is like 2 brain cells fighting for third place.

dnawesum1223d ago

@HollowIchigo25
Uhmm... how can someone be this stupid!?
Before the Russian invasion Ukraine was a very corrupt country, yes, true. Have you stopped and asked why? Because it was a shadow puppet country run by Putin. It's why the Maidan revolution happened where the Ukrainian population ousted their puppet president and shed blood on the streets for a year to take away control from Russia.

TheLigX1223d ago

Keep stanning for nazi oligarch states... I guess? Russia and Ukraine both fall under that descriptor, nazi oligarch states. Caring about either is just stupid in my opinion. This is another stupid war about oil, and the US (A right wing pre-fascist oligarch state) government never met a right wing fascist leader it didn't like. In this instance Ukriane is the right wing fascist oligarch state that is causing Russia (another right wing fascist oligarch state) to contest their vast oil reserves.

TricksterArrow1224d ago

"This Ukraine shilling and twitter vitriol made me preorder it."

This is what makes you pre-order a game? Yikes.

sadraiden1223d ago

Hahaha coup d'etat? What coup d'etat?

Sounds like someone's been drinking the idiotic right wing kool aid.

Tell me what you think happened in 2014.

ChasterMies1223d ago

Russia bad. It’s that simple.

ED-E1224d ago (Edited 1224d ago )

I mean, they are Russian devs, it's literally not allowed by law to have another opinion than what their government says in that matter ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wi... ).

Without bringing them and their business in danger, not commenting on it is basically the only way for them to handle this.

SullysCigar1224d ago

Exactly this. It's not fair to try to bait them on the subject and then berate them for not answering in line with the Western media narrative.

To be honest, it's Sergey Mohov of Remedy Entertainment that comes out looking like a tool to anyone who understands the situation. It's a shitty move to pull on an industry competitor.

Concertoine1224d ago (Edited 1224d ago )

The simple fact is im sure many in Russia feel the same way about this war as US everyday folks felt about Iraq. Vietnam, WW1, etc…

They just arent allowed to say it. That self righteous people are so ready to write off their hard work because they cant answer this question is hilarious. You didnt give the right answer with a gun to your head? Cancelled! Congrats, you just put another gun to their head

MadLad1224d ago (Edited 1224d ago )

I've lost two industry friends, that I've kept in contact with for years now, defending themselves over this BS war.
At least have the balls to acknowledge it's here and happening.

TheLigX1223d ago

You're right, this is a BS war. Every aspect of it. It's not about Russia or Ukraine, as they're both fascist oligarch states. It's about which one of those fascist states will give the west access to their oil. So, yes... it absolutely is BS, and the US war machine is making it even worse.

Leeroyw1224d ago (Edited 1224d ago )

I was interested in the game. I won't buy it now on principle. 16 children were buried alive in an apartment block the other day. Bombed by the Russians. Who may well benefit from this game.
To not address this horrific war is a cop out. And commenters here justifying it with some re worded lines people read online is crazy.
As an Australian I will own my countries mistakes. So too shall they.

jlove4life1224d ago

I read through this pro and anti Russia sentiments but your comment struck a chord with me 1st all your right your money dWYD but personally I wouldn't miss out on a good game worrying where funds go its like ppl who tweet about child labor from their iPhone most products have a back story and unfortunately funds are funneled to things and profits made in ways we may not like or agree it definitely tragic about kids in the apartment but its hard for me to believe this game publisher devs etc are to blame

Leeroyw1223d ago (Edited 1223d ago )

Thanks for being so civil. I'm kind of angry at myself for commenting on this because I love games and hate politics but it's more than that. It's a crime against humanity. I have been hanging out for this game. But the way I see it is that true change happens when we all take responsibility for the people we elect or have running our countries. If we didn't there would be no regime change or proper elections. I'm not saying the developers risk their lives, but they live in Cyprus. I think saying that "we don't buy into hate" is a cop out to try and have their cake and eat it too. There is an issue if they are accepting or funnelling money contrary to sanctions and it should be looked at. You made some good points though.

jlove4life1222d ago (Edited 1222d ago )

@Leeroyw no need to apologize you can't help how you feel that was very noble and moved me I just would hate for you to miss out on something when its more complicated then either of us could imagine know its apples oranges but I hear its uproar over hogsworth legacy because if jk beliefs ( author of Harry potter) no matter if you're on her side or not she most likely licensed ability to make game and has already been paid those that boycott that game unfortunately won't teach her a lesson or change her beliefs either in life all we can do is be the best us we can be and try to hold on to as much sanity as we can and enjoy this hobby we love so much called gaming

TheLigX1223d ago

The only reason that you haven't seen the equal or worse war crimes that Ukraine has committed is that the media machine is committed to keeping that part under wraps. Both states are committing crimes against humanity, and the US is providing weapons for one of the sides to commit them.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio26d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing26d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit26d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing26d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
