Microsoft faces EU antitrust warning over Activision deal

From Reuters: "Microsoft (MSFT.O) is likely to receive an EU antitrust warning about its $69 billion bid for "Call of Duty" maker Activision Blizzard (ATVI.O), people familiar with the matter said, that could pose another challenge to completing the deal.

The European Commission is readying a charge sheet known as a statement of objections setting out its concerns about the deal which will be sent to Microsoft in the coming weeks, the people said."

Flawlessmic1216d ago (Edited 1216d ago )

Hmm now Europe's getting involved al9ng with Google and nvidia.

Was always certain the deal will go through but a bit if doubt is starting to creep in now.

Would be better for gaming if this doesn't go through as Ms already has more studios than Sony to compete if they get there shit together with what they have already, this deal would just push them into daddy's buys his way to the top territory rather t, ahhan actually competing.

Although does mean I'll still have to pay for acti games rather than enjoy them for peanuts on GP, ahh well I care more about gaming overall than I do about my own pockets unlike most people on here.

jznrpg1216d ago (Edited 1216d ago )

I’d rather have a healthy industry then have a few dollars in my pocket . I love video games . I was basically raised by them and have enjoyed them my entire life . Nintendo ,Sega, Sony and even NEC (PCEngine/TurboGrafx16) have brought so much to gaming .

MS hasn’t ever been a game making company. They buy games and call them their own and are trying to buy up all the third party they will be allowed to . That’s called bringing nothing to gaming .

Even without buying Zenimax publisher they could have built as many studios as they wanted and took those billions and brought something to gaming . If they did that I would own Xbox right now. Instead they are just trying to hurt their competitors and not even trying to compete they threw in the towel after Xbox360 .

Instead they have brought services and more monetization while trying to make multiplats their own.
They are a bane to gaming and will be as long as they have this strategy. Gaming is made by creators and MS is just a buyer .

Eventually a good amount studios they do have will decline and get stale or close imo then they will be back to buying again if they don’t somehow become creators but I just don’t see it happening with their mentality

Flawlessmic1216d ago

Totally agree mate, I have both but playstation has always been miss reliable from ps1 - 5 nothing but the best experiences and memories for me.

My history with xbox has been pretty terrible from from 360 onwards for various reasons but I love games and don't like missing put on stuff so will always buy whatever Sony Ms and nintendo release.

Hate what Ms is currently doing right now, previous acquisitions were needed to get back into the game and I understood that, but this is different this will buy there way directly to the top while having and extra 15 studios on top of unlimited money that they can burn just to get rid of Sony once there ahead.

While it would great for my pocket, it's not worth the possible repercussions to gaming.

Lifexline1216d ago

It’s standard procedure for them to do this. It’s normal for the current stage of the process. The EU and Microsoft are able to have informal talks right now but cannot formally discuss concessions and work towards a resolution until the EU has sent their statement of objections outlining their concerns. So this is normal. If anything it means the process is moving forward to possibly a resolution.

343_Guilty_Spark1215d ago

You just see they are looking into it and don't look into why.

Google - deal threatens mobile store, they put zero effort into Stadia and abandoned it

Nvidia - isn't so much opposed but concerned about blocking access to titles

I noticed Apple hasn't bothered. Nintendo is fine. Steam fine. Epic fine.

Do you ask these questions.

McKraka1215d ago

You haven't proposed any questions to answer... You just made statements.

I am assuming you want to know why EU is stepping in. Is that correct?

RedDevils1215d ago

What a stupid post. All you do is naming big tech company yet without summary or description of your intention. What a big waste of time.

Microsoft faces EU antitrust warning over Activision deal

(Insert the drama continues sound track here) or that meme with the startled rodent 🤣

--Onilink--1215d ago

Europe was always involved, there was even a deadline already set for their response and this part is actually still just another natural part of the process in which they outline their concerns/objections to MS and based on what they negotiate with them they decide to approve or reject it.

But this isnt something new or strange, it’s literally how its supposed to happen regardless of what they decide in the end

strifeblade1215d ago

Don't doubt. Bunch of major firms issued a buy on Activision stock when it was previously hold rated. It's going through

To anyone who thinks Microsoft shouldn't be allowed to buy this company, you are just being a fanboy. Microsoft will fund new games by Activision that they wouldn't normally make because of financial risk. This will create more games by a Developer that is constrained to solely making profitable IPs. Only the new games would be exclusive.

If Sony can buy Bungie and Destiny, there is no reason why Microsoft can't buy these developers and games. Honestly, they are preventing Microsoft from competing. I expect a huge legal battle and the deal to go through...

badz1491215d ago

"Microsoft will fund new games by Activision that they wouldn't normally make because of financial risk."

LOL

MS already owns more studios than Sony. so where are the games??

Hypertension1401215d ago

Why are you bringing Bungie into this?
You know that's not the same thing, more like if Microsoft is allowed to buy Bethesda and Activision, then Sony should be allowed to buy Take Two and Capcom.

Rude-ro1215d ago (Edited 1215d ago )

Microsoft has bought more gaming developers than anyone in gaming …
And has dismantled them with next to no games… as a gaming company with a console…

Let history be the reality… not fandom

RedDevils1215d ago

GamerRN you remind of that episode in Rick and morty show where they brainwashed people. Fucking idiot.

DarXyde1215d ago

I'm sure there are fanboys who wish for a painful death to this deal, but I think most objectors have sensible reasons to not want it to go through. Microsoft's acquisitions so far have had damn near zero impact on me, so I don't care about the games really. The big issue for me is not about gaming at all, actually. The side issue for me is gaming which involves Microsoft being the biggest company of the three with the most capital to outright buy three large players in the industry (yes, I'm counting Mojang) to acquire Minecraft, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Call of Duty, Candy Crush, etc etc etc. Do you see the issue with a company just coming by, seeing so many successful IPs they didn't create, goo shopping, and acquire them? And not just acquire them, but also starve competitors using XGP because they're wealthy enough and can afford to do Day One? I promise you, Microsoft will make XGP a lot worse if they are successful in destroying the competition. If you don't know that, you don't understand Microsoft.

Fanboyism is cheering on the acquisition of extremely large, profitable publishers while also having the most capital. Microsoft sees these popular money makers and they want to own it. Sony acquiring Bungie is a problem to me as well. I don't know how well they will commit to allowing them to remain "independent" so we'll see.

I feel that the one acquisition Microsoft made that I get was positive and showed they have a renewed commitment to quality was Playground. That was an excellent choice: they have a great history of creating great games for Xbox and it felt natural. But all of this? Bethesda I can say makes some sense. Still very bad, but I can understand it. ABK? for no reason other than to kill competitors and have bargaining chips. Let's not play.

FinalFantasyFanatic1215d ago (Edited 1215d ago )

Guess that makes a Sony/Nintendo/PC fanboy then, but how well are those studios Microsoft bought actually doing? Shouldn't they have a much higher output of games then they actually have?

Do we really need one or two companies to go on a buying spree and create a monopoly/duopoly? Buying every developer and publisher they can and monopolizing the entire industry or getting pretty damn close to it, there's not a great deal of companies that can rival Microsoft when it buying up the competition (and I don't think you want some of those other companies buying up developers/publishers).

It's pretty obvious that Microsoft plans to squeeze out their competition and acquire as much as they can for gamepass.

PapaBop1215d ago

Your rationality behind the deal makes you look like the fanboy tbh. If you can't distinguish the difference between buying a developer and a publisher, then words are lost on you.

GamerRN1214d ago

To all you idiots who object... You realize Microsoft is in 3rd place in the gaming market, right? So why wouldn't you want them to catch up?

Like I’ve been saying the European Commission holds the big sway just based on the number of territories they cover. Let’s see what happens.

SullysCigar1215d ago

I just want it to be over. It's like a black cloud hanging over the industry for WAY too long now. I'm also fed up with the fans showering Phil 'Monopoly Guy' Spencer with loyalty when he's given nothing back. Here's a brief synopsis of the way things are right now:

Fans: “We hate you Jim”
Jim: “Here’s PSVR2, exclusive games and a high-end controller”
Fans: “We love you Phil”
Phil: “Do not pass go, do not collect $200”
Fans: “Umm.. got anything for us yet, Phil?”
Phil: “Here are Special Oreos to eat while you watch our lawsuit! Honk honk!”

Hofstaderman1215d ago

Don’t forget the Mountain Dew. Literally nothing but Starfield and a lawsuit. How did he win an award last year for being an influential individual in the industry?

Gamehard1215d ago

You forgot their knitted controller cozy they unveiled a few months back. MS just keeps on knocking it out of the park!

343_Guilty_Spark1215d ago

You can't even tell us why it's bad. It's basically it's unfair Microsoft has money to do it and Sony doesn't.

SullysCigar1215d ago

^ @343, people have tried explaining this to you many times over the past year. We've all now given up, since it's clear you lack the mental aptitude to understand.

FinalFantasyFanatic1215d ago

That's actually kinda accurate of both PS fans and Xbox fans, I still dislike how Jim's handling PS though.

Even of the deal goes through, MS will have to provide concessions.

At least thats what it looks like, and Im glad personally.

Orchard1216d ago

They were never going to get this through without concessions - but similarly, they’re likely fine with that.

They were never going to remove COD from PS, and they want Activision revenue, regardless of concessions.

CR7JUVE18971216d ago

I think the concession will be that with the exception of brand new, unannounced IP, they can't hold anything back. Which means that everything currently under the ABK umbrella will have to remain multi-platform.

That really is the only way that I can see this 69 billion dollar transaction going through.

Orchard1216d ago

@CR I don’t see it blanket applying to everything. It’s probably just going to be COD.

I doubt regulators even know what Crash, Spyro etc are. They only seem to care about COD.

And I expect MS to be fine with that - pulling COD from PS would be insane.

They will want to keep that COD revenue pouring in, rather than immediately hamstringing it.

S2Killinit1216d ago (Edited 1216d ago )

Im glad, I hope MS doesnt get to make any of the currently multiplatform games into exclusives. Such a shit move from MS. The more limitations on MS, the better.

Hopefully this will prevent others from following this sort of merger/acquisitions path.

Orchard1216d ago

@S2 I hope you keep that same energy when Sony buys Square and/or Capcom 😉

I don’t see MS making COD exclusive though, they want the $$$ from PS.

crazyCoconuts1215d ago

Taking COD away from Playstation insane? Maybe, but wasn't taking the next Elder Scrolls away from Playstation insane too? That's got a huge following in gaming. Dunno... We're all speculating on how insane MS is... specifically how much are they willing to do to crush their competition. That's where you just gotta know Microsoft...

Outside_ofthe_Box1215d ago

"I hope you keep that same energy when Sony buys Square and/or Capcom 😉"

You better keep the same energy as well

Orchard1215d ago

@Crazy Zenimax games don’t generate any where near as much revenue as COD does on PS - and COD does it every year. Zenimax games are spread apart.

@Outside I’ve said time and time again I’m fine with acquisitions, it’s normal in this industry. You saw no complaints from me when Sony bought Bungie.

RedDevils1215d ago

Normal in the gaming industr? When the last company like Activision been bought?

S2Killinit1215d ago (Edited 1215d ago )

@orchard
I would see Sony buying Capcom/Square as bad (but on a much smaller scale because those are not a publisher like Activision)

But as Ive stated before, the MS fans cheering this acquisition have no right complaining at that point , Or ever again when this happens again and again with all manner of large companies gobbling up the industry.

This acquisition will have profound legal implications that will set in motion acquisitions until the industry is all carved up. So no complaining from you at that point Orchard.

FinalFantasyFanatic1215d ago

@Orchard,
I actually wouldn't be surprised if Sony bought Square-Enix, they already have a somewhat close relationship, and Sony has bailed them out before, Spirits Within anyone? Although SE games are like a hit and a miss for me in this age, they're games are no longer system sellers for me.

Microsoft just want to crash their compitition.... And we are fine with spiderman ip turn ro exclsuivity and final fantasy street fighter v and many jrpgs and lets not forget about project eve

The_Blue1216d ago

Who gives . Just make good games.

Crows901215d ago

Of course. MS doesn't make good games though. They've just purchased a bunch of highly talented studios that do make good games so they don't have to worry about that stuff.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio16d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
