PlayStation VR2 preorders are now available without an invitation

theverge says: "PlayStation VR2 preorders currently appear to be open to everyone with a PlayStation account, no special invitation required. When preorders first opened last month, you had to register ahead of time and then be selected by Sony to be able to put an order in for the PSVR2."

Looks like it is indeed open to the public, could be a mistake though since they sent out invites again like 48 hours ago.

This either has insane stock, or isn't selling that well - the demand is no where near as high as the PS5 itself (obviously, one is niche, one isn't).

Nitrowolf21247d ago (Edited 1247d ago )

I have a feeling it’s not selling out as fast as they hoped. I got invited twice even after preordering the first time.

No super long queues either

sparky771247d ago

It was obvious it was going to bomb, the price is too high in this economy and the games are just average looking.

Sony shouldn't be wasting resources on this just focus on PS5.

crazyCoconuts1247d ago

Yes because PS5 is struggling so much. PS is where innovation happens...let us enjoy our toys, we're not Xbox gamers

Eonjay1247d ago

It's not gonna fail simply because you want it to.

Orchard1247d ago

@crazy PS5 is not struggling, but that doesn't meant they shouldnt focus on it.

@Eonjay Depends what you consider a failure. I consider the ~4% attach rate of the original PSVR a failure, yes.

Eonjay1247d ago (Edited 1247d ago )

You would consider 100% attach a failure because you are only in this article to troll. I think that as long as it reaches their objective and keeps them invested in the medium with more innovation then it's a success.

Notsofast1246d ago

well compared to the Meta quest 2 the price is great 1,500 vs 550

Knushwood Butt1246d ago

' I consider the ~4% attach rate of the original PSVR a failure, yes.'.

4% of over 100MM is quite a lot for something that nobody is asking for.

It may be a little bit of both. It has good stock because the price is higher than many can afford at the moment. You figure you need the 5 first, which is already a premium product at better availability (now). So, many may not be after this right away. I'd imagine it will do just fine and people all have their own threshold as to when they will jump into something. For some it was right away, for others it may be after more games are announced / shown.

In any case, you shouldnt worry too much about it.

Eonjay1247d ago (Edited 1247d ago )

"This either has insane stock, or isn't selling that well"

No it doesn't. This could mean that they have simply become more confident in their launch stock levels. Don't forget they are expecting 2 million in the first few months. That would be huge compared to PSVR 1 but at the same time it's not gonna sell as much as the PS5. You don't have any idea what their stock is, or how well it's selling. You don't have any information

They also already said this very thing would happen. That it would go public.

Orchard1247d ago

"You don't have any idea what their stock is, or how well it's selling. You don't have any information"

So? We make the same assumptions anytime we see an Xbox S or X or a PS5 in stock. We never have information about the stock volume, we make assumptions based on ease of purchase / availability.

SierraGuy1247d ago

Thanks captain obvious 👍.

Orchard1247d ago

Anytime - glad you agree.

mkis0071247d ago

AR/VR is the future. In some form it is inevitable. Sony wants to get in on those patents while the getting is good. We will not be playing the same way in 20 years. Apple is coming out with theirs next year, with a consumer model a few years later. Those who get in late are going to have to take the scraps.

Orchard1247d ago

I recall hearing similar things back in the 90's with the Virtual Boy...

Also, remember when everyone was going to be gaming on 3D TVs and no one would ever buy a normal TV again lol.

The reality is, VR will never be the standard way we consume games and as such, it hasn't really taken off at all. The vast majority of consumers just don't care, heck, the vast majority of PS owners don't care either.

Knushwood Butt1246d ago

Remember when Kinect was sold 1:1 with Xbox?

Thing is, Kinect is history. VR is still here and has competition from multiple vendors.

I'm surprised MS aren't trying to buy Meta to help increase competition in the VR arena, seen as they've done absolutely nothing to nurture the platform.

Eonjay1247d ago

"So? We make the same assumptions anytime we see an Xbox S or X or a PS5 in stock. We never have information about the stock volume, we make assumptions based on ease of purchase / availability."

No we don't. 'We' try to analyze what's going on. You don't do that. You just jump to whatever conclusion fits your narrative.

You said it has to either have insane stock or isn't selling well. Clearly these are not the only two options. It could be selling well and they could have good stock. Even though this is completely plausible and likely, you only troll. Only.

generic-user-name1247d ago

"Depends what you consider a failure. I consider the ~4% attach rate of the original PSVR a failure, yes"

You need a TV to play an Xbox right? Let's see the attach rate of TVs sales to Xbox Series X/S sales.

darthv721247d ago

I get that you are trying to make a dig at orchard but false equivalence. The TV is for more than the xbox. The psvr is only for PS.

generic-user-name1247d ago

@darthv72

You'd like an more apples to apples comparison?

Let's compare gen 1 VR sales, like PSVR, to gen 1 console sales.

mkis0071247d ago

1.So you believe gaming will always be done with a controller in your hands staring at a tv?...nothing else we have reached the end? Can you imagine if people thought that way when radio came out or black and white tv's?
2. Virtual boy was ahead of its time ,too expensive, and had one small company making it , 3d was a natural progression to vr and ar.

We are still in the expensive B/W TV days of VR. Its only a matter of time until we have have the equivalent of todays OLED color flat screens. Its asinine to think tv plus coontroller is all we can do.

darthv721247d ago

Personally im hoping to still be around for holodecks.

CobraKai1247d ago

I’m waiting for a version 2 myself.

frostypants1247d ago (Edited 1247d ago )

I mean VR is still borderline niche. But I think and hope that once the quality of this thing becomes apparent (compared to something like the Quest 2) it will take off. Just needs the software support...

ChasterMies1246d ago

We ordered one but, yeah, $550 is a lot to swallow. Also, after years (decades) of tepid response to VR, these devices need positive word of mouth, and that won’t come until February. I’m not sure anyone in our house will like it. We all get motion sick easy.

Price is high, but not out of the ordinary for high-end VR. Look at the price of the Valve Index VR bundle - and you still need a VR ready PC on top of that.

However, I don't think the Horizon game is enough to be a system seller. They need a AAA game that has an expansive campaign. Maybe a Last of Us VR game that plays similar to Half-Life Alyx. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that Half-Life Alyx rumor is going to end up being true (prove me wrong Sony!)

Tacoboto1247d ago

After Portal on Nintendo Switch, I'd be very surprised if Alyx never winds up on PSVR2.

Or it could indeed never make it, like Half Life 2 on anything and everything after Orange Box :/

Phoenix761247d ago

Portal 2 and the orange were both released on the ps3, so it's possible we could see HL Alyx

generic-user-name1247d ago

Alyx on PSVR2 is almost certainly going to happen based on Valve's past comments about bringing it to PSVR. It's just a shame it couldn't be ready for launch apparently.

Ninte1247d ago

It's over $1000 nz and on top of a $899 for a ps5 which we seem to have stock shortage so it's going to be a tough year.

ARESWARLORD1247d ago

It's been available in Canada for pre-order for at least 3 weeks. I pre-ordered back in November and I just canceled it 2 days ago.

It's still available from Best buy The source and amazon.ca

The price is just a really hard pill to swallow

SierraGuy1247d ago

Right now the price of anything is hard to swallow.

Thanks Vlad! You piece of 💩.

jznrpg1247d ago (Edited 1247d ago )

Some thngs are getting cheaper . Gas is $2.44 a gallon where I live . Cost of living is relative to each person , 549$ isn’t much compared to things I do with the fam for a night or 2 for me . But I understand we all have different situations . For me 549 is worth the price

Lexreborn21247d ago

I’m pre-ordering next year, to close to Christmas to try and invest

Star511247d ago

they will only pre-auth your card now and it'll drop off in a day or 2. They'll charge it days before shipping in Feb

Lexreborn21246d ago

Thanks for the tip, I’ll consider that
