Him and pretty much the rest of the industry outside of first party... literally the worst console I've ever worked on.

Jin_Sakai1290d ago

Yet it had some of the best looking games ever made at the time. If only the industry took time to lean the cell architecture and it become the standard we’d have some incredibly good looking games today.

Aloren1290d ago

And imagine if just Sony took the time to make it easier to work on, instead of expecting the whole industry to learn to work on it the hard way, the ps3 would have had even more incredible games much earlier in its life cycle, and it likely would have sold a lot more (think Ps2 and ps4 numbers...)

andy851290d ago (Edited 1290d ago )

Only have to look at the Last of Us to see how things could have looked for a lot of games. The cutscenes and world astound me for mid 2000s standard tech.

wiz71911290d ago

That just wasn’t because of the architecture , it was the only console on the market at the time that had the disc space to make those games .. Going with Blu-ray was a big bet that paid off , I remember in MGS 4 it was a in game joke that pointed that out. Even when it came down to some multiplats games like FF13 and Castlevania LOS was multiple disk ,

Orchard1290d ago

@Jin for exclusives yes. Lots of third parties skipped on it or ran at lower frame rated and/or resolution.

While the PS1 and 2 were awesome, of the more modern consoles, if we say modern is PS3 and later - I still think the PS3 had the best exclusives and spawned so many new franchises.

@wiz Blu-ray was both a blessing and a curse. No disk swaps was nice - but having to install games because BR was so slow was lame back then when the other consoles didn’t need it.

Jin_Sakai1290d ago

“Lots of third parties skipped on it or ran at lower frame rated and/or resolution.”

Because they didn’t take time to learn the architecture. It’s was new to them. Sony’s first party studios did wonders with the Cell.

septemberindecember1290d ago

@Andy

That's because the cutscenes were prerendered.

darthv721290d ago

360 had some of the best looking games as well... what's your point? A good looking game is one thing, but the real meat and potatoes is how it plays. PS3 games played like ass compared to 360 (3rd party mostly). Seeing as 3rd party makes up the majority of games released in ANY given console generation, you would think the platform holder would ensure that development would be as smooth as glass.

Sony didn't... not until the PS4 which brought a full on fundamental shift in the way they designed their hardware. All three previous iterations of PS consoles before it were custom and required a learning curve. Mark Cerny convinced Sony to change their focus from custom to something more industry standard and look how that turned out (hint: it turned out phenomenally). So when devs complain about working with the PS3, I'm glad Sony listened to the criticism and changed things for the better.

shinoff21831289d ago

Aloneness the ps3 wasn't the first hard console to work on. Let's be real. I've heard and read things about systems in the past. Chill

septemberindecember1289d ago

You can't disagree with facts, people. The cutscenes I'm TLoU on PS3 were prerendered. Look it up

You will never be the greatest PlayStation hater no matter how hard you try. Give it a rest. I'm not a big Xbox fan but you don't see me in EVERY Xbox article constantly trying to tear it down. What is that? You taint every PlayStation conversation like it's your job. People act like they are competing with each other to be the biggest Sony hater. Just be yourself man.

Orchard1290d ago

I comment on things as I approve them. I’m also a PlayStation gamer (which doesn’t mean I can’t criticize them on things).

But if you don’t like my comments - reading them is entirely optional.

anast1290d ago

I'm not a huge Orchard fan, for my own reasons. At any rate, I wouldn't take this stuff that seriously, it isn't healthy. The be "yourself" stuff is a bit dumb too.

Crows901290d ago

Which makes it incredible to think playstation still sold more than ticking time bomb that was the 360. And not just that but all playstation exclusives looked far better than xbox games.

Orchard1290d ago

The exclusives looked better, the third party games didn’t.

The 360 RROD situation was shockingly bad, not knowing when your console was going to randomly die and take weeks to repair (if it was even under warranty) was pretty stressful. Hopefully we never have that kind of situation again for any console manufacturer.

Inverno1290d ago

Don't really understand the disagreements. The entire industry gave the ps3 as much praise as it did criticism over how hard it was to develop for. Games looking good was proof of the hardwares capabilities but not justification to bother focusing on the hardware exclusively. Especially when devs had to worry about multiplat development.

Orchard1290d ago

Spot on. The CELL was super powerful, but you can’t really afford to be the odd one out on architecture when most devs have to hit all platforms.

Same thing with the launch XB1 using ESRAM instead of a proper pool of GDDR

gangsta_red1290d ago (Edited 1290d ago )

"literally the worst console I've ever worked on."

The Saturn might take that crown, for me personally.

While the PS3 was tough for devs and production and continues to be the bane of BC for future PS consoles, the Saturn was pretty notorious for being a nightmare to work on.

Orchard1290d ago

I’m too young to have worked on the Saturn, but there is something appealing about those old systems, things were much closer to the metal and less regulated than nowadays.

I still look through eBay for old development hardware from time to time - but it’s all crazy expensive nowadays.

Knightofelemia1290d ago

If it weren't for the PS3 you would still be playing your games on DVD and crying that you have to disc swap with your Series X.

Orchard1290d ago

Well, not really. The PS4 and XB1 defined how we consume physical media nowadays. E.g. the requirement to install everything all the time and the fact we play from the hdd/ssd really came from there, not the PS3.

Today the reality is, we play nothing from any type of disk, and often the disk doesn’t even contain the content required to play.

If developers were required to always ensure the entire game was physically present at retail (like they were with PS3/360), we would be looking at multiple Blu-ray disks nowadays.

SullysCigar1289d ago

Knightofelemia1289d ago (Edited 1289d ago )

@ Orchard

"Sorry for not being willing to pretend CELL / PS3 was a good development platform!"

Sony's studios mastered the cell and the games look and played great. The only reason why games don't impress you about the PS3. Is because developers were to lazy to study and try and figure out the Cell. They were to busy copy and pasting games from the 360 to port to the PS3.

RedDevils1290d ago

This guy words has no weight. But he probably heavy with all his hate building up pretty sad.

Orchard1290d ago

Sorry for not being willing to pretend CELL / PS3 was a good development platform 🤷

Jin_Sakai1290d ago

“Sorry for not being willing to pretend CELL / PS3 was a good development platform 🤷“

If Sony studios could master the Cell processor then so could 3rd party developers. They just needed more time and effort.

DashMad1289d ago

@Jin_Sakai
"time and effort" as if this doesn't require capital the longer development time the bigger development cost. Most 3rd party doesn't have that leisure they don't have other venture to subsidize development cost unlike Sony.

Father__Merrin1290d ago (Edited 1290d ago )

Best looking games from that generation it pushed more and more and felt more next gen longer than 360 or Wii. The console it self pulled through in the end regardless of development woes in the beginning.

you had the better games that's all. And what I recall the differences between dragons dogma and dmc on ps360 was mute

That's the price you pay when trying to push the envelope sometimes, even with the difficulty ps3 had amazing games on it!!!

At the end of the day I have no issues with company's pushing things, the cell was an impressive piece of technology, sometimes it will hit and other times it will fail although it's hard to say ps3 was a failure considering it still won that gen.

It's only cause of Sony's ridiculously perfect record that it's looked down upon.

It can only be perceived as fail comparing it to Sony's standards not it's competition.

Atleast Sony gave me a console that worked, unlike Ms who purposely sold me and millions of others a faulty xbox so they could launch first and beat Sony to the market.

All I was left with was a book stand seeing as Ms replacement program wasnt in place at the time so it went straight in the bin, didn't even get to finish mass effect before it shat itself :(.

Sgt_Slaughter1289d ago

To be fair, the PS3 also has notorious issues with the first few version released with the YLOD. Anyone trying to purchase those systems now has to immediately do repair work on them just to make sure they function.

Not to mention Sony removing features after launch such as PS2 backwards compatibility and Linux support, the later of which got them in trouble legally. Add to that the lack of internet security that brought down their servers for an unheard of timeframe, and it's easy to see how Sony was just as bad as Microsoft in that generation.

BlackTar1871289d ago

Yold was way below the standard failure rate of electronics. Calling it Notorious is laughable.

wiz71911289d ago

@flawless I don’t think they purposely lost billions of dollars , I just think the rush to the market made them make some fatal design choices which was fixed in later revisions. The Combo of the Cell and Blu-ray is what gave the PS3 its amazing games , Blu-ray was the saving grace honestly. Having that disk space they was able to pack so many asset onto a disc. MGS 4 used up 50GB of space

Yui_Suzumiya1290d ago

Despite all that it's still my all-time favorite console with my favorite games on it

Knightofelemia1290d ago

Still my favorite console still have my fat launch, and my first gen slim. Grabbed another fat from a thrift store for $40 new thermal paste and a cleaning and it runs like a top.

OhReginald1290d ago

It might have been hard to develop for, and might have hurt some 3rd party games running on it, but wow the ps3 blew the competition out of the water with its exclusives.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle30d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.
