Microsoft is exploring energy-saving graphics modes for Xbox and Windows games

Given the state of global power markets, Microsoft has placed a greater emphasis on energy saving as of late. One of the recent updates to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles included a revamp of the power settings menu, giving you a better visual representation of how much energy you're likely to save while switching between power saving and standby modes. If these recent Xbox Insider Program surveys are to be believed, Microsoft may be exploring ways to take it a step further.

I don't think I'd ever be interested in 'downclocking' my console (and experience) to save dollars on my energy bill. That being said, energy bills aren't that high here, I know some countries over in Europe seem to have crazy high costs.

DarXyde1295d ago (Edited 1295d ago )

I'd say Sony had the best approach. PlayStations tend to be engineered with cost saving measures as a priority.

New PS5s are being engineered to be even more energy efficient, which is a huge plus.

Orchard1295d ago

True, but it's also easier when your console is weaker and in a larger box.

DarkkMinion1295d ago

They are also engineered to look like utter trash on a living room.

DarXyde1295d ago

Orchard,

Again: best approach.

Being larger isn't really a concern, at least to me. Plenty of breathing room and it isn't competing for much in terms of space, honestly.

I also find performance differences to be negligible in either direction, so I'd say it's a smarter design.

Orchard1295d ago (Edited 1295d ago )

@Darxyde My comments were relating to power consumption - if the box is lower spec and bigger, you will consume less power, due to the lower spec but also less need to cool.

Hard to say something is the “smarter” design though if it’s lower spec and bigger.

DarXyde1295d ago

Orchard,

"My comments were relating to power consumption - if the box is lower spec and bigger, you will consume less power, due to the lower spec but also less need to cool."

I'm aware of that. I'm saying the larger chassis is a non-issue for me. I'm also saying that, while it is a 'lower spec' machine (only in some ways, I will remind you), the performance is virtually indistinguishable in most cases from the Xbox Series X.

One more thing: to be precise in my language and remain on topic, I would emphasize the part of my comment about "best approach" rather than "smarter design". Not sure if you're doing it intentionally, but I feel like we're getting a little lost. I'm speaking specifically to Sony's approach to power consumption, not the design/look of the console itself.

There's plenty to be said about a console that needs a stand at all times, but that's outside of the scope of my comment. I tend to believe Sony does a great job of balancing power and performance. Both may be negligible in the grand scheme of things for now, but a revised SKU due out next year is looking to make a pretty efficient unit. Historically, Sony does seem to try to reduce these things. It's rated for a higher maximum output, but I suspect that's not going to be much of an issue any time soon.

Orchard1294d ago (Edited 1294d ago )

@Darxyde Got it. Yeah I think we're just confusing each other by using different terms for the same things, but I think we're actually on the same page :P

"Microsoft is exploring energy-saving graphics features for Xbox games"
more like:

"Microsoft is exploring ways make multiplatform developers be able to run new games on its heavy burden obsolete Xbox Series S console "

Seriously people you have no idea how technically MS screw up big time the whole game industry (specifically Multiplatform games developers) with the S, the more the xbox S sells the harder is going to be for MS to pull the plug from that console, and they will have no other way but to limit or constraint the Multiplatform developers to adapt games to that thing, this will last completely to this generation. Ever wonder why Starfield latest trailer looked so effing bad ?, well how about you look to the Xbox S side , just saying ;)

Orchard1296d ago

"they will have no other way but to limit or constraint the Multiplatform developers to adapt games to that thing"

Maybe they can convince people to keep making games for the 2013 PS4 and XB1's that are far lower spec than the Xbox Series S... oh wait...

shinoff21831296d ago

Neat idea but no gamer is gonna use this.

ActualEngineer1296d ago

Xbox already has an energy saving setting for their 9th gen consoles. It is called xbox series s 🤣

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing27d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9227d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit27d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing27d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9227d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
