Sonic Frontiers Review - IGN

Sonic Frontiers is an ambitious open-world adventure that mostly succeeds at mixing up the Sonic formula, even when some of its ideas fall flat.

-Foxtrot1290d ago

So basically they took a massive gamble to get top marks and it still fell flat in places.

I mean it’s not Sonic 06 bad obviously but they’ve apparently put all their effort into it and it’s just getting 6-7 out of 10.

Open world Sonic is not what we needed or wanted

Just do Sonic Mania 2 jeez

FlavorLav011290d ago

Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast was my favorite Sonic. I always wished they could recapture that semi-open world hub and story arc that made it a blast to play through. This looks pretty close, so I’m gonna give it a go once I’m done with Ragnarok.

-Foxtrot1290d ago (Edited 1290d ago )

Nothing from this looks remotely similar to Sonic Adventure

Adventure had charm, variety, awesome music, multiple characters, side things like the chao garden, good level design where placement of things made sense

This just looks all over the place where fan projects made by a single person look a little better or more in tone with what Sonic is supposed to be

Anyway I’m glad it hasn’t done well because they said this was the future of Sonic games to come. Maybe the reviews and reception will give them a wake up call and slap them across the face to do better.

@ FlavorLav01

SA2 was my favourite, SA was pretty good too except the last boss was a little disappointingly easy. Anyways 7 is not a bad score by any means, it falls in the good range, and someone's 7 could easily be another's 6 or even 8. Tastes vary.

Snobbery comes with everything tho, like those who would refuse to watch a movie because it got a 7 instead of an 8, no thinking brain for themselves so have to rely on what others think.

@ -Foxtrot

"Anyway I’m glad it hasn’t done well"

A 7 out of 10 is a bad score now? It's getting a few sevens and four out of fives as well as a few low scores, much better than I thought it would do. Why would you hope for a bad game??

Edit: thought I saw an 8, must have been a four out of five.

Hofstaderman1290d ago

I’ll never forget booting that game up on my Dreamcast…the section where the killer whale chases you. Such fond memories.

It also seems that the main reason this got marked down are due to technical issues mainly pop in which after watching the video was horrible huge platforms would frequently appear out of thin air. I'm positive this can be addressed ice read it's more of a memory leak issue in the engine which can be optimised.

The review was seemingly positive when reflecting on the open world, level design, even story didn't get a negative spin with some criticism to the combat and tedious nature of cannon fodder enemies.

I think once they patch the game I'll get it personally. I'd like mania 2 as much as anyone else but after origins I don't know if we will see much activity on their 2d sonic games ongoing after origins negative reception

@oldmcgroin seems to be getting quite a few 80s on metacritic the 2/10 clickbait article would of brought it down but overall seems to be at a 75% which is respectable lots of reviews blasting the pop in if that was addressed it would probably be a 8/10

Muigi1290d ago

I’ll play it if it goes on PS Premium but this is a no buy for me.

lellkay1290d ago

Back to 2D now please. Mania 2 next.

CrimsonWing691290d ago

While it still looks “off” to me in terms of what I’d expect from a Sonic game, I’m not gonna lie, it kind of looks good from what I’ve seen in reviews.

RetroCaptainSteve1290d ago

Pretty good so far. About an hour in. Some stuff gets repetitive but it works pretty well.

No shit... I just got the VR SW game digitally because its crazy $$ for disc.

F.I.S.T. and Forespoken i still have sealed so now I wont have to unseal them.

PapaBop525d ago

New PSVR 2 owners are in for a treat. Tales from the Galaxy's Edge is amazing.

pwnmaster3000525d ago

Nice now I can see how truly bad forspoken was

MrBaskerville525d ago (Edited 525d ago )

The combat is good. But the open world is shit. Feels like a game where they had a good foundation but didn't know what to use it for.

Might be a hot take, but it's a lot like Sonic Frontiers. Good idea, but terrible use of open world.

andy85525d ago

It was good imo. Magic system and combat were very good. World traversal is some of the best I've played. Writing can be lacking but there's a lot of humour in it. I've always said this'll be a days gone situation where people only appreciate it when it's given away 'free'. The hate mostly seems to be from people who haven't even played it

Traecy525d ago (Edited 525d ago )

Totally agree with your comment. The gameplay was fun, the graphics are decent, the story is lacking but there is some humor. Most folks that were dissing the game didn't even play it.

MrNinosan525d ago

I actually liked Forspoken and had fun all the way til the Platinum trophy was achieved.

Christopher524d ago

So much unnecessary open world.

OldDuffer524d ago

I really liked it. Going in with low expectations, I was surprised to find a game I enjoyed. Traversal is a blast and I thought the combat was fun. The writing was a bit cringe in places, but I play games, it's a rare thing to get great writing and it didn't spoil it for me. I think plenty people will have more fun than they expect once they can try for free...but you need to get a couple of hours into it. If you can make it through that fud, your good!

There's a few in here I've wanted to try but not quite taken the plunge on.
I'm curious about Sonic, have wanted F.I.S.T. , Would try Coffee Talk and Phogs. Maybe even give WRC a try.
Pleased with this selection now.

TheNamelessOne525d ago

The Coffee Talk games are good. Wasn't a fan of FIST though.

monkey602525d ago

Shame to hear that. It's probably the one on this list I am most excited to play.

VivaLaManual524d ago

FIST is a very solid metroidvania.

gold_drake525d ago

forspoken haha.
but i might play it as long as its available.

ps2 classics are good.

Traecy525d ago

I played it back when it was first released, the gameplay is fun.
