articles like this must STOP. All consoles will do fine this gen. Sony will do their thing. they dont need to be told how to run their buisness. why do people feel the need to preach. sony will have more idea than anybody of how their buisness needs to be run. not by some random website. n4g is being choked by bad and lame articles. i dont want to log on to see 4 or 5 new pages of news a day to find that 75% of it is junk. n4g people sort it out.

Fanboys and the media neglect to see that fact xwabbit Silly really. By this time next year the PS3 will be ahead of the 360 in sales. Not that it matters to me, all I know is that I have the console that can provide me with the best exclusives from now and beyond 2009.

Considering all PS3 games require blu-ray, what is this person smoking?

Personally, I think Sony would do well to bundle Little Big Planet with every PS3 sold. They have a winner in LBP and should exploit it. Everyone who has a PS3 should play it.

I thought the idea of a revamped PS2 was a good idea...however in 2-3 years a next gen console will come out and PS3 will be mass market priced, and much less money. I don't think Sony could have anticipated how successful the Wii would become. If they knew, then, they could have augmented the PS2 and produced a contender to the Wii. Alas, this won't happen because the ball was dropped.

I don't think the PS3 will have a problem selling in the future. It sells at its own pace it seems. Price drop and 09 games should have everyone getting excited.

Releasing software like KZ2 & God of War in 2009 are musts...

Honestly, I thing Sony & the BDA need to address the cost of BluRay movies & cut their prices closer to dvd... a 4% marketshare in the US is not good... i actually think that would help PS3 sales as well as help bluray.

i'm sorry, K2 looks amazing, but if LBP and R2 couldn't push the PS3 i don't see K2 making things better. LBP was a new ip, Resistance 2 a hyped sequel and K1 was a flop.

Killzone 2 is targeted towards the main demographic tato. The FPS genre. Killzone 2 WILL sell better than LBP, sadly. Thats just this day and age we live in.

And 360 Man, I spoke to early haha. I have played Crysis, and I take it you have too. It does look amazingly real, although to play it at its best (what the devs designed it for), you need a hell of a PC (is it even possible yet to play it at max settings, 1200p, and with max AA and AF at even a weak 30FPS?) I digress.

No Killzone 2 does not look as photo realistic as Crysis, I won't be a blind fanboy on that one, but it sure as hell crushes any other game visually on the 360, which I know you both support. Also, when did sales matter so much to the customer? Unless you two have stocks in Microsoft, I don't see why it would matter to you. Lets be real here, neither Microsoft or Sony are going anywhere. Both consoles will live throughout this 10th console generation.

Now if you disagree, please provide a reply. I'm a bit bored on this plane ride. :)

ive played crysis maxed out >60fps and ive played KZ2 beta, and I can tell you that crysis looks great, but the detail, animations, lighting, and feel are all better in KZ2. Crysis beats it on scale of level, but honestly, the character models are bland, and the lighting isn't the greatest thing around. Its mainly the scale that's cool. especially when your in the jungle.

Wasn't resistance 2 targeted towward the masses? KZ2 will not sell to the masses unless Sony advertises the sh*t out of it. Even still with the economy the way it is its going to be hard without a price drop for anybody to afford a PS3 right now!

Amen to PS2 HARDWARE BC coming back...

I'm hoping when the PS3 slim comes out that Sony offers a cheaper model (preferably $299.99) without PS2 BC, and a higher-end slim model with full hardware PS2 BC (like the 20GB and US/Jap 60GB models did).

Once you have seen a game like God of War 2 running upscaled to 1080p on a PS3, you'll be hooked on PS2 games again.. ;-)

And as far as the article talking about a model WITHOUT Blu-Ray... That would make as much sense as either MS or Nintendo releasing a version of their console without a DVD drive... And this got approved???

Well the same was expected from MGS4 and LBP. They both didn't boost sales that much. Even worse, the last weeks/months compared to 2007 sales the PS3 is dropping in sales. That's sad.

PS3's have been sold to movie fanatics, BluRay buyers. Not gamers. Those 17 million users should at least have bought 5 million copies of LittleBigPlanet, an exclusive on the PS3 scoring 9.5 out of 10. But they didn't. That 1 million sold also has some bundle pack sales, so thats sad sad low.

What's needed? A FREAKING PRICE DROP SONY!!!

im a gamer and i bought it to play games, i think you are grossly mistaken in your idea that movie fanatics bought the ps3 not gamers. for us gamers the bluray player was the added incentive.

i do agree that a price drop is needed though. Wow a disagree not unexpected i guess, 299 is the price at which the ps3 will take off. But i didnt mind spending the money at launch.

^ Mart, come now you know i care little of sales but please, LBP has sold over 1.5 million now, now consider its brand new IP and unique genre then look at Fable II, on a console with a higher install base and a SEQUAL to a highly succesfull game - its sold 2 million

sorry but i got to say, if LBP has sold around 500k less than Fable II i think its doing extremely well, dont you?

Yes 1 mln. or just over for LBP is bad.

Comparing it to Fable 2 having just over 2 mln. is strange. Fable 2 is a RPG, which has a much, much smaller audience then a mainstream/casual game. Fable 2 also had to compete with a game called Fallout 3. Fable 2 also isn't the highest scoring 360 exclusive this year, certainly not the one scoring over 9 out of 10 average. Also, Fable 2 isn't bundled with a 360 in one package like LBP is, that one takes easily 500k of sales for LBP.

In that logic you should compare it to Gears of War 2 selling close to 4 mln. now. The new IP logic isn't right. Gears of War 1 was a new IP back in 2006, yet it sold 5 mln. within 5 months or so.

So it still stands. LBP, a casual game that is fun for everyone from casual to hardcore gamer, from young to old, the highest scoring exclusive on the PS3 (one of only 2 games on or over 9 out 10 on the PS3 exclusive in total), the game that doesn't have a specific audience like an RPG, shooter etc., only selling just over a million is SAD.

Again: Christmas sales need to be higher then just over a million for Resistance 2 and LBP, with an installed base of 17 million PS3 users. Most of them are BluRay movie fanatics for sure.

omg mart not every game appeals to everyone, not everyone has the money to buy this stuff, and besides u have many choices for games this holiday season, u could pick r2, socom, motorstorm,lbp, cod w@w, fallout 3 and other games,its not a damn like 360 where u have the point whores who just go out and will buy any game to get points, and have about gears, fable,cod w@w,fallout 3 to chose from this holiday season

with an installed base of 17 million PS3 users. Most of them are BluRay movie fanatics for sure. OMG I SWEAR TO GOD THAT IS THE MOST ANNOYING THING EVER, so just the fact that sonys games aint selling most ps3 users have to be blu ray watchers, wrong ea and others dont just say ya were making the most money off ps3 users

ridiculous the argument doesnt hold water because you say so ok.... anyway there was enough people waiting for fable that you would think it would sale more than it did. and if you think that lbp planet didnt have many games that it was fighting with then you sir are a nut. Scores dont mean everything lots of high scoring games dont sell as well as they should. And i understand that you like the 360 but saying people bought the ps3 for the blu ray is akin to me saying people buy the 360 because they like the rrod its moronic.
and to top it off you are talking about three games what about all the other games that sell well muliplat games. I mean to be honest isnt that all the 360 has. dont get me wrong i play my 360 but for the exclusives ps3 has it beat no matter what the sales say. I say this all the time E.t the game sold 1.5 million so what does that tell you about the things that people will buy?

Whats funny is.. PS3 has more consoles sold in 2 years than 360 did at its 2 year mark.. If Ps3 and 360 released at the same time.. Ps3 would be ahead and in 2nd.. Wii.. For whatever reason is the biggest fade in gaming history and also the worst console in gaming history.. EVERY single one of my friends who bought one.. Does not play it, 2 have sold it.. It just isnt fun.. Dont get me wrong im a huge Smash bros fan.. But that game alone isnt enough for me to buy a Wii..

PS3 is fine.. Blu ray is just catching on.. HD Tvs are still getting into homes.. 2008 was a great year for Sony.. MGS4 and LBP are winning Game of the Year for alot sites.. 2009 is gonna be better than 08..

I dont see a problem here at all.. keep it up Sony..

Most of the year Sony outsold MS worldwide. That is why Sony doesn't give two craps about what a group of 360 fanboys or cheapskates have to say.

Every time someone states the PS3 has sales issues I mark down one more person that drank the Microsoft Kool-aid and bought into the smoke and mirrors show they are trying to run in order to protect their piece of crap outdated last gen money ripoff machine.

Get developers to package games as multi-DVD and Bluray. Did someone say FF on 360?

Simple as.

The Bluray player should have been an optional add on - with a bay to swap in the new unit like PCs. Then the Ps3 would have been more affordable and released at the same time as the xbox 360. How different things would have been.

and NO a PS3 WITHOUT BD just wudn't make sense AT ALL!! it's not rocket science.. i wudn't be able to play MGS4 if had such a PS3.. i wudn't be able to play ANY game for that matter.. since all PS3 games are currently on BD.. yes a lot of them can go on DVD, but why would you? BD is (supposedly) safer than DVD.. so i don't know how someone even cud suggest such a thing..

You got to show Lbp, you got to show MGS4, you got to show Killzone 2, you got to make them think - "holy crap! did you see that?" and go run do a search on Killzone.. soon after they will do a search on PS3 price and it writes itself

This article says how Sony can boost PS3 sales, but for some reason loads of people here are getting really really defensive...It doesn't say it's doomed, just that it's in a distant third place (which is a fact, unless of course the ever increasing 7.5 million is somehow insignificant). Whoever said the PS3 will overtake the 360 this year is delluded. The gap is currently increasing significantly in favour of the 360, so how are they suddenly gonna sell 7.5 million while the 360 sells 0? That'll never happen in one year. In the whole time they've been out the PS3 has never caught up on the 5 million, and is now falling further behind. This is fact, not the media conspiracy that you think it is lol. And Killzone won't be huge and sell loads of PS3s...This didn't happen for LBP and Resistance 2, which are both quality games, so why would this suddenly be different?

i agree with you, but you have to admit the writer made a stupid comment about making a cheaper system buy removing the blu-ray drive. I mean all the game are produced on blu-ray. They would spend more money on porting everything to a different media format.

Edit: and i dont think killzone will sell consoles. I think it will only sell copies, but it's best just to wait and see.

Well well now... If it wasn't for Microsoft's last price drop, there would have hardly been any gap for the PS3 to catch up to. I do recall the 360 getting out-sold by the PS3 WORLD-WIDE (yes, even in the USA) earlier this year.

So, yeah... Microsoft had a good Christmas season with the 360. And after seeing the sales figures between the PS3 and 360 these last few months, it is going to put even more pressure on Sony to drop the price on the PS3.

I wonder how the 360 will fare sales-wise versus a $299.99 80GB PS3 and all of the exclusives lined up for next year?

I see there are some people that don't believe this, well it seems there's a movement coming that we aren't aware of? What if KZ2 bombs hard? then whats the next savior? There's always an other game and an other.I don't know how big the gaming market pie people expect it to be but I highly doubt there's that many core gamers going to make much of a change this gen. these numbers are from winkapidia, let's just take them for now as they are somewhat accurate:

Gen Cart Vs. CD; year
Sega Dreamcast 1998 10.6 million
Sega Saturn 1994 17 million
Sony PlayStation 1994 102.49 million (shipped)
Nintendo Nintendo 64 1996 32.93 million

I know most likely a lot of the sega players had either moved to sony or nintendo system after sega went byebye but still lets use all the them for data sake.

that's 163.02 Mil in that gen core gamers like me and you.

Last Gen: DVD vs. purple lunch box vs. OS giant MS

Sony PlayStation 2 2000 120 million
Microsoft Xbox 2001 24 million
Nintendo Nintendo GameCube 2001 21.74 million

that's 165.74 Mil in our last Gen,
so there isn't really a big spike in user base if any just looks like one console took the lions share of users.Dvd player in Ps2 and casual market help sony there, Now to the current...

I notice the data isn't updated yet but let's use what they have atm:

Sony PlayStation 3 2006 16.84 million
Microsoft Xbox 360 2005 22 million

that would be 38.84 Mil but each gen always included Nintendo so let's put our good ol luving Wii in the mix also;

Nintendo Wii 2006 34.55 million

that's already 73.39Mil, I know these numbers aren't updated but if they are, I'll zip over and give the VGcharts update ( for data sake i know it's not correct but you'll get an better idea)

43 mil wii
26 mil x360
18 mil ps3

total 87 mil, yes i know the wii has a large part of the non gamer/casual market but so did sony last round so let's use the total of the data sales. Let's give the game market a projected 5 year sales like each one before it.

x360 reaches 55 mil with 5 years, keeping the same sales and nothing goes wrong.
ps3 reaches 70 mil, BR booms and they manage to sell like crazy or even 100mil. that would look like a good core gamer sales chart but as we all know there are many core gamers that have the wii also...so I can honestly say there is no way to beat the wii this gen.

wii will have just about what it always had, about the total sales of the PS3 and X360, check the data again and it's had the combined sales of both. we are expecting it to take over the 2 by march 09'.So 170+ mil wii? that is of course if everything goes on that straight path.

why I say this, because so many people are lying to them self, the wii is part of the gaming eco system, and it has brought gaming to a level that it was never before and we can say that our future will be very different come the real next gen. The mainstream will be all over the new systems and the companies will have to really dazzle the casual gamers because we know they have the "greens" that they want. Can't make a wii clone because they already tasted that, you'll need something new, yay for innovation and competition.

the xtards are right,ps3 owners buy more movies than games, so i will go enjoy Socom,lbp,r2,mgs4,warhawk,unch arted,ncaa football,burnout,guitar hero,army of two,assassins creed,gta and whatever games i have on my hdd while i will enjoy my 9 blu ray movies, oh god i have more movies than games oh wait no i dont i have 27 games(including hdd games)and only 9 blu ray movies but to xtards that cant count that is 5+5+5+5+5+2 for games and 3+3+3 or can u xtards count pass 1

Calm down, I'm an economics scholar and I'd tell Sony to lower the price but they wouldn't listen. They don't mind that they're in third because they must believe that they will catch up. Which they probably won't, because it's getting late in the day and they're quite far behind. They do deserve to do the best out of the 3, because they took a risk in creating the most powerful machine from having the weakest in the last gen but in the current climate, their reluctance to lower price is putting them further and further behind

One simple answer... ADVERTISE!!!!

I live in the UK and I hardy ever see any adverts for the PS3 on TV. The XBox360 is advertised in every single advert break! There are adverts for Lips, Rock Band, Guitar Hero, In The Movies, Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia... the list goes on! Most of the games are multi-platform but only ever seem to mention the XBox360.

If the XBox360 doesn't out sell the PS3 3 to 1 in the UK over Christmas I'll be very surprised.

Sony if you want to sell your products do some advertising!

There are also some stating how it is doing better than DVD during the same life stage.

The PS3 needs a redesign for it's "bottom line" model.

1. Remove the autoloading.
2. Have an open/close door for disks.
3. Remove the media slots under the media door.
4. Sell Wifi separately.
5. Have regular eject and power buttons.
6. Maybe remove the optical and HDMI...maybe.

The PS3 CELL will be reducing to a 65nm chip, thus reducing costs. This will happen in March '09. It would be a perfect time to release it alongside a new redesign. As it stands now, the PS3 production costs are about 40.00 more than they sell it for(400.00 vs 450.00). Bottom line...strip that beast without stripping the PS3 experience.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
