The Witcher Remake is in development using Unreal Engine 5

"We are thrilled to announce that The Witcher Remake is being worked on! That's right, the game that started it all is being rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5.

The game is currently in the early stages of development at the Polish studio Fool’s Theory, where veteran Witcher series staff are involved. We, as CD PROJEKT RED, are providing full creative supervision.

The Witcher Remake is what you might know by the codename “Canis Majoris”. It’s still early and we want to ensure that the game is created with the utmost care and attention to detail, therefore, while we’re excited to share the news with you, we want to ask you for patience as it will be a while until we start talking about this project in detail."

I'm sure some of the usual suspects will still grumble, but this is a game that actually merits a remake. The original Witcher is not available on console, and even the PC version feels pretty ancient at this point. Also the use of Unreal is encouraging, hopefully this will help them eliminate a lot of the bugs that seemed to be a product of their proprietary engine.

victorMaje1285d ago

Agreed. This one makes sense.

chrisx1285d ago

I never got to play the first 2 Witcher games so this is great news for people like me. I hope Witcher 2 also gets this treatment

lonewolf101285d ago

The PC version was ok for it was slightly janky/buggy even for those times, absolutely loved it. This is great news especially for those that never played it.

MrVux0001285d ago (Edited 1285d ago )

If any game deserved remakes its games like this. Old and technically flawed / outdated, not to mention how many bugs the game still has and performance issues on PC.

I can only hope they plan to do the same with Witcher 2 eventually.

It also makes me wonder, how will the Witcher 3 Upgrade hold up against remake graphically.

neutralgamer19921285d ago

they really need to remake witcher 1-2

Konami needs to remake MGS 1, 2 and 3

Legacy of kain should be remade

ominusha series needs a remake

we have to understand some of these series may never get another new game so remakes are about as far as the publishers will go

FIELDMARSHALL_P1285d ago

I would pay whatever for the MGS remakes on the 4 or 5 I think about that all the time. One of my daughters bought me a PS2 and MGS3 was one of the games she got with it. I forgot how much I loved that shit back in the day glad she listened to me when I was grumbling about MGS5 when I was playing it all the time. Shoot i would play part 4 over too on a new system since my damn 3 died on me last week.

myfathersbastard1285d ago

Oh 100%. Not only is it PC only, it’s TERRIBLY dated now. I never got a chance to play it, but I’ve watched critiques and story breakdowns. And while the story seems solid, the graphics and gameplay mechanics are in serious need of a remake.
Looking forward to this one.

WelkinCole1285d ago

Have only played 3 so I would definately play a remake of both games

Tacoboto1285d ago

With the story and narrative defined, they'll be able to do here hopefully what Naughty Dog and EA Motive have done with their remakes - focus on the improvements in technology and ensure the most polished gameplay possible with engines fine tuned for the current generation.

CantThinkOfAUsername1285d ago

Indeed. It's my favourite out of the trilogy, but those gameplay mechanics, especially combat, are beyond archaic.

outsider16241284d ago

I don't think I'd complain for a remake of this. I'd complain for when are they going to release it lol.

melons1285d ago

Lots of remakes these days but this is one that really makes sense considering it's been stuck on PC this whole time and was a *rough* diamond.

RPGer1285d ago

Nothing is more sense than The Last of Us Remake, it was needed the most, the graphics were too old to bare, and man the character models were just merely better than some of the Original FFVII. So for that a very cheap pricing and it was a clear steal for a very important remake. Everybody asked for it even Mario, Fortnite and Halo players were asking for it, not to mention how every Sony fans couldn't stop calling for this remake to happen. (satire)

Army_of_Darkness1285d ago

@rpger

Did the last of us remake hurt you emotionally in some way? It's been made, it's awesome. It's old news now, so Get over it.

CaptainHenry9161285d ago (Edited 1285d ago )

CDPR is barely involved with this remake. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out especially from an indie and support studio named Fool’s Theory with only 60 people that never developed a AAA game on their own

CantThinkOfAUsername1285d ago

It's a good thing. Current CDPR aren't the ones who made The Witcher. Fool's Theory is full of ex-CDPR devs who worked on the trilogy.

Crows901285d ago

This is a day 1 for me. This Witcher game is by far the best one. It'll be amazing to play a remake .

NewTestDrive1285d ago

You "Day 1" guys are what's wrong with the industry.

Walweeze1285d ago

I think the people who always want to call out others for how they want to spent their money or make things negative is the issue with this industry/ gaming community. Let people enjoy gaming how they want.

andy851285d ago

Whys that? Because I actually want to see people paid for their work (within reason) compared to waiting for years for it at $10. If time an effort is put into something and it shows you're damn right I'll be there day one.

dumahim1285d ago

andy85

Because that's why games continue to get released in bad shape and it continues to get worse. Developers who ship a broken and unfinished product should not be supported with day 1 sales. They're not properly incentivized to ship it complete and relatively bug free. If people would show some restraint and at least wait until closer to launch and get a good sense of where it's at with previews and maybe even reviews, maybe we can stop letting developers/publishers off the hook for shipping a game in a mess.

andy851285d ago

@dumahim that's why I said if time and effort is put in and it shows. I wasn't referring to games that are released broken

Crows901285d ago (Edited 1285d ago )

Nope. Said day 1 but obviously if there's an issue with the game in the reviews I would stay my hand. I don't preorder. Pre orders and you are what's wrong with the industry.

@dumahim

My comment was day 1. Obviously reviews are normally in by then. That's plenty of restraint for what should be a fantastic remake of an already incredible game.

milohighclub1285d ago

@dumahim what if that day one support allowed the studio to actually realise the potential of the game?
Which would you rather? the game meet that potential over time or never get released? Cos the studio could be under pressures from the publisher that you never become aware of...

neutralgamer19921285d ago

it should be a day one as long as it's great quality

andy

publishers see that as gamers will support it regardless so yes it should be day one if you are excited but qualtiy should matter too

Crows901285d ago

Yes of course. Never said the contrary.

Shane Kim1285d ago

Last of us released 2013 - Everyone and their mother out with the pitch forks saying how it's not needed.

Witcher 3 released 2015 - Remake being welcomed with open arms.

Fishy Fingers1285d ago (Edited 1285d ago )

LOL...

'The Witcher' is the first game, from 2007.

lonewolf101285d ago

You know this is the original title being re-made and not 3?

Shane Kim1285d ago

My bad, thought it was the third game.

The Witcher 3 Remaster is supposed to come out this winter 2022. In fact, I would bet on it.

Crows901285d ago

I get it. They did use a Witcher 3 picture for the article....which is odd.

Hope they keep the pub banter in. I don’t have high hopes for it be left in as it is fairly crude but funny as hell

Zeke68582d ago

The article thinks it will be a nextgen title but I think they will release it on the PS5 Pro and then on PS6 just to make people doubledip on it.
