Dead Space remake can coexist with Callisto Protocol’s sci-fi horror

The Dead Space remake may keep a lot of its past qualities, but it is bringing enough to the table to stand up against The Callisto Protocol

What a title aimed at preloading the idea that there was some sort of question on whether two sci-fi horror games could co-exist. Why even bring up Callisto Protocol in the title at all? Just for clicks, nothing else.

Be better, author. We're looking to be informed, not to be persuaded to click for perceived drama.

LucasRuinedChildhood1318d ago (Edited 1318d ago )

To be fair, they're not just 2 sci-fi horror games. Callisto Protocol is a spiritual successor to Dead Space with the same creator with similar signature gameplay tropes (e.g. the stomping), and crucially, they come out within a month of each other.

The author didn't focus enough on the only real problem with them being so similar (as I said, they're releasing on top of each other, and competing for mostly the same audience). He just leaves it as subtext.

I think a lot of people after playing Callisto Protocol won't have an appetite to play the Dead Space remake for a while, and many people will pick up Dead Space instead because it's the safer option and a classic. They likely will eat into each other's first week sales a bit because they're releasing so close to each other. A 6 month gap would probably be helpful. .

They'll still both be successful though, I think. I'm prioritizing playing Callisto Protocol because it's a new IP and a fresh experience. If it didn't exist, I'd definitely be buying Dead Space much quicker than I'm going to.

***He just leaves it as subtext***

Being in the title isn't subtext and none of what you wrote changes anything I said as we don't question all the other similar games specifically like this. Even if Dead Space wasn't getting a remake they would both exist in the same arena and would draw opinionated comparisons between the two. But to ask if they can coexist? That's an inference that is laughable considering how gaming has evolved heavily on inspiration from the past.

MIDGETonSTILTS171318d ago

You don’t know the history behind Striking Distance Studios and Dead Space.

Christopher1318d ago

If Konami and Kojima can coexist then anything can. Don't need to know who worked on what to know that the idea of coexisting from one game to the next isn't contentious.

isarai1318d ago

No one was saying they cant, but i'm actually hyped about Calisto Protocol, whereas i'm only passively interested in the Dead Space remake. First off i already played deadspace a lot so a huge chunk of that experience is already devalued, and second, EA seems to only do this out of spite, but not when fans have been demanding it for years.

Shane Kim1318d ago

For years? It was released on PS3. Seems like some games from that era is ok to remake and some don't.

isarai1318d ago

Wasnt specifically talking a remaster or remake, but rather just something new in the series. They refused to acknowledge the demand until Calisto Protocol was announced shortly after EA then came out of nowhere with the announcement of a remake. Seems to me only to try a spite/overshadow Calisto

MrBaskerville1318d ago

@Isarai
To be fair, Dead Space Remake must have been in development long before anyone heard about Callisto protocol. it's just a weird coincidence or maybe it's just been more and more apparent that there's a market for Dead Space.

cluclap1318d ago

@isarai no one even knew what Callisto protocol was when it was announced so I don't believe thats true. It was labeled as a survival game set in the PUBG universe. I don't know how EA would've thought it would be anything like dead space. also news about dead space remake being in development was rumored long before Callisto's initial announcement.

Inverno1318d ago

What it brings is owed to the fact that an original already exists, and seeing as the original is made by the same guy making Callisto then it never had to stand up against anything. If anything we hafto wait and see whether EA remakes the second or actually tries to reboot and does something original with Dead Space. Then we'll see if it can stand up against.

EA Cut Dead Space's Marketing Budget to Pour Into Mirror's Edge Due to Mock Review Scores

Former Visceral Games devs reveal Dead Space's marketing budget was cut in favor of Mirror's Edge because of mock review scores.

I wish EA would just release a DS2 remake. DS is my favorite horror game and DS2 is the best one in the franchise. But because DS1 failed to meet certain numbers EA scrapped the DS2 remake. SH2 remake was great rumors are Konami might be asking for another SH remake. The RE2 remake was great EA just needs to give it another try. But all they seem to do is shitty sports games that are no different from the year before. Change a few players, add different uniform colours, maybe change a team logo. Wash, rinse, repeat.

goken514d ago

Agreed. DS was great. But DS2 was even better. Would love to see a DS2 remake, though I would love to see a DS4 even more.
The problem with EA is they make easy $ from the slight changes to their sports titles like football FC games (whatever it’s called nowadays). People just lap that sh1t up.
Comparatively, games like DS which don’t sell 10s of millions, can’t sell them team player add ons and all the like, would seem a hassle to make and unappealing comparatively. Especially when you consider that most EA non sport titles haven’t actually performed well recently.

Dark Souls 2, Darksiders 2, Dead Space 2, Death Stranding 2, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2

chicken_in_the_corn514d ago

The Dead space remake was so good. Better than the original. Shame they won't remake 2.

__y2jb514d ago

I loved the original dead space but the remake I just found boring. Game design has moved on and the game really showed its age, just small area encounters repeated again and again.

I bought Dead Space during launch window and I never bought a Mirror's Edge game .

Inverno513d ago

Then they went on to screw both games over.

UnbreakableAlex513d ago

I'd rather see a new and great Mirrors Edge than another boring Dead Space.

EA Japan Exec Criticises Japanese Ratings Board

An executive of Electronic Arts Japan has criticised the Japanese video game ratings board for allowing upcoming action game Stellar Blade to be released uncensored while EA's own Dead Space was banned in the country.

CrimsonWing69762d ago

He’s got a point. If a game is M-Rated, which is the equivalent of an R rating, I don’t get why you need to censor anything. The rating is the indicator of the content and the age appropriate. If it’s appropriate for adults… why treat them like children? 🤷‍♂️

Eonjay762d ago (Edited 762d ago )

This is about gore... not about anything sexual. And specifically I think it is about the realistic depiction of gore. Unfortunately I don't know the nuance of the CERO board or how it is relevant their specific culture (as a prohibition on gore may transcend age) so I hesitate to make a statement. Can anyone else provide insight to what kind of gore is considered unacceptable?

CrimsonWing69762d ago (Edited 762d ago )

Yea, I know this is about gore, but thanks for pointing that out.

My point still stands, if a game is essentially rated for a mature audience then why censor for them as if they’re too young to view it? Makes no sense.

To answer your question: Decapitation, dismemberment, like… anything gore. They have been censoring that since CERO was established. Look up RE4 chainsaw decapitation or any MK games that made it there.

Cacabunga761d ago

EA Japan? Wtf never heard of that

ZwVw761d ago

Yet, the Oneechanbara series (y'know, the game with half-naked samurai females slicing up zombies to bloody pieces) get released in Japan uncensored.

The CERO ratings board is an equilibrium.

Smellsforfree761d ago

This confuses me since I've seen so many gory Japanese movies and anime. For example, Battle Royale.

gold_drake761d ago

definitely has a point.

but .. its japan. are we really surprised?

VersusDMC761d ago

I don't know if the EA executive is going off the one close up of an arm being cut off in the demo. Maybe it's uncensored because it's the arm of a cyborg or it doesn't happen that often (didn’t see EVE dismemberment when killed in the demo) .

In the states there's a certain amount of swear words allowed to a PG13 movie before it is deemed R. So maybe it's the same in Japan for gore?

Eonjay761d ago

Yes I think you may be on to something. The violence is gory but I wouldn't call it gruesome.

Retroman761d ago

Ea Japan please make Knack 3
in the future

Eonjay761d ago (Edited 761d ago )

Does EA Japan actually make games at all? Or are they just a regional publisher?

Retroman761d ago

I'm sorry Japan Studio made Knack
