Having staggered through a long and bruising format war with HD DVD, it would have been no real surprise had Blu-ray Disc crumpled like a spent fighter when hit with an abrupt slowdown in consumer spending in that latter part of 2008.
The fact that it didn't, and appears to have come through the fourth quarter still on its feet (this column was written before Christmas) has to be considered at least a minor triumph in its own right, leaving Blu-ray to continue the fight in 2009.
So what needs to happen now for the format to succeed in the coming year?
The first order of Blu-ray business for 2009 is an adjustment in strategic planning around the format, by both hardware makers and the studios, some of which will happen naturally but some of which will be forced on the industry.
First and foremost, the PlayStation 3 Trojan Horse strategy has been a bust.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
Too many wrong things on this article that i'm too tired to point em out. Happy Holidays everyone!
everyone wants to be some sort of media expert. LMFAO
blu ray is dying today and/or dead tomorrow because 'they' said so right
This articles says that the PS3 hasn't been a driving force for Blu-ray but I disagree. Blu-ray wouldn't even exist today if it wasn't for Blu-ray.
Ughhh. I hate the point about MP3s replacing CDs despite being of lower quality. Do joggers watch movies on the go? MP3s replaced CDs because people listen to music on the go. Music works just as well while jogging, sitting on a bus, going places. Streaming movies to a Tv where you don't need to carry things around is pointless. I'm tired of these baseless and thoughtless points.
