Resident Evil 5 dev: PS3 is not hard to develop for

Resident Evil 5 Producer Masachika Kawata has questioned the idea that developing a PlayStation 3 version of a multiplatform game is significantly harder than developing one for Xbox 360.

MURKERR6271d ago (Edited 6271d ago )

that it was hard to develop for, its like some developers want to be spoon fed

HighDefinition6271d ago (Edited 6271d ago )

DO YOUR SELF A FAVOR AND WATCH IT, It should put everything in perpective.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Irony.

BTW, IGN were the creators of it.

chrisnick6271d ago

the ps3 has started off the exact same way.......even sales wise......sony's just following a formula that takes a while to see its potential......but sees it nontheless....we'll have a repeat of last gen.....the 360 will bow out early...i promise u that...3-4 years from now....it'll be the ps3 and the wii...if the wii lasts that long....the winner of the gen is the one that lasts and sells the longest.....last gen is only over bcuz there's no one for sony to compete with.....history is about to repeat itself.

ultimolu6271d ago (Edited 6271d ago )

That was funny High Definition, but it's so true.
The PS3 is following the same footsteps of the PS2.

Hard to develop for? Check
Sales were slow? Check
Sony lost money on the console? Check
Sales took off like a rocket after prices dropped steadily? Check

HighDefinition6271d ago (Edited 6271d ago )

make some HARDCORE 360 "freaks" sick to their stomach.

Alot of gamers are young and inexperienced and don`t know the history of how earlier generations played out.

Bnet3436271d ago

Only reason why I ever hated PS2 ... for killing the Dreamcast. :( Thanks for that flashback video HD. OT: It's not hard to dev for but maybe harder compared to 360.

HighDefinition6271d ago

No prob. I love that video, brings me back memories

Bladestar6271d ago (Edited 6271d ago )

"Hard to develop for? Check
Sales were slow? Check
Sony lost money on the console? Check
Sales took off like a rocket after prices dropped steadily? Check"

...

PS2 was always ahead of the competition in terms of sales? PS3 NOT CHECK. (Both Nintendo and Microsoft are doing great compare to Nintendo, Sega and Microsoft during the PS2).

PS2 had a larger library of games? NOT CHECK.

PS2 had all the 3rd party exclusive? NOT CHECK.

Sony lost money on the PS2 only initially? NOT CHECK. - Sony is losing even more money since the PS3 launched 2 times the price of the PS2... and not during a recession.

Sales took off like a rocket after prices dropped steadily? NOT CHECK... Sony already dropped the price of the PS3 2 times... a $200 price drop.

I would also do a little correction... The PS3 is not doing as good as the PS2 was doing by the second year.

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunc...

By the time the PS2 turn 2 years it already had more than 24,253,000 unit install base... So, it's about time you people quit saying that... that was true only like 6-10 month ago.

The fact is... that you are expecting history to repeat itself... but the circumstances are completely different now than before...

During the PS2 era.. though the PS2 had a slow year during the first year it always performed better than the competition... Nintendo, Microsoft or Sega never enjoyed beating the PS2 not even for a month... That's simply not the case this time around...

The PS2 simply had to gain marketshare without having to do much since people weren't buying into other consoles... this time around Sony does not only have to sale... but they have to figure how to stop people from buying the competitors consoles and buy PS3 instead.

lowcarb6271d ago

Says who you? How do you know 360 will blow out? I bet you were one of those people saying nobody will ever support xbox and so on and so on. Comments like yours don't belong in the gamer zone to begin with. Funny how it's terrible if Sony drops out but no problem if it were MS hypocrite. All this history stuff is stupid anyway and will be the downfall of all your ultra ego's.

Ju6271d ago

@Bladestar, thx for that link, BTW. According to that, the PS3 still sold about 3M more withing these 2 years then the 360. How does that fit into the picture ?

DiabloRising6271d ago

Ju brings up a good point. Selective analysis is fun for all.

Don't you guys get sick of this console war crap? Ever?

And Kigmal, the PS2 did not kill the Dreamcast, Sega did, with YEARS upon YEARS of stupid business moves and bad decisions. The Saturn, if anything, killed the Dreamcast.

lowcarb6271d ago

Good freaking point onslaught, and well good point again.

Horny6271d ago (Edited 6271d ago )

How did the ps3 have 2 price cuts already and and go down 200$ in price.
Your comparing the highest cost of the top sku to the lowest cost of the core sku, nice try.

The PS3 only had one price cut:
The premium package (60gig)was 600$
The core package (20gig) was 500$

100$ price drop (sku change)
Premuim package (160gig) 500$
Core package (80gig) 400$

Each sku was dropped by 100$

The second price cut will most likely be in 2009.
Probably between 50-100$

of course with your logic the 360 had 3 price cuts and went down 300$ just to stay competitive.

drewdrakes6271d ago

Ahahaha, so the guy that DIDNT write the engine for PS3 is saying that it isnt hard to write? Come on. PS3 development is easy if you use Unreal Engine 3 too. Other devs are saying that its hard to develop that base code.

jadenkorri6271d ago

oh stop your whining, lets take a good look at that link you provide, clearly shows the ps3 outselling the 360, since ps3 outsold the 360, next step in fanboyism, compare sales from last gen to current, ah something to attck the ps3 with... Love your little part about sony losing money on the ps2 hardware, we all know that, and we all know sony is losing money on the ps3 hardware also, but guess what, so is the 360 as it is losing money on hardware also, even when the recent price cut i doub there making money on it now....Software sales is were they all make their money.....

prowiew6271d ago

Probably is not hard to develop. Is just different than the normal.

iamtehpwn6271d ago

360 just has an architecture that is ideally a computer in a smaller box, while PS3 has more new, interestingly designed hardware.

6271d ago
power of Green 6271d ago (Edited 6271d ago )

A grip of devs have said this yet when Eurogamer and others do the final comparison, it would seem the devs comments are just marketing jive/fud lol.

This jerk-off session is based from devs needing to earn every penny invested in PS3 back, wait untill the games release, then you'll see. lol

Jecht6271d ago

I'm pretty sure I can give you a Mormon wedding so that you can marry your Xbox, Xbox 360, AND Microsoft all in one ceremony.

You want a summer or spring wedding?

JD_Shadow6271d ago (Edited 6271d ago )

Uhh...no where in the article did it state that he DIDN'T have anything to do with the engine. Please don't try that tactic. There's more to making an engine than just writing it, anyway, mind you.

Wonder how many people will be branded with "SDF" in here by the XDF, though! More initiations (and bubble popping) will probably happen in this story from the XDF?

And do you notice that the people who are commenting Bladestar have been proven to be 360 fanboys themselves?

My guess is that all of those 360 fanboys were very much hurt by what this guy said. Basically put, this Capcom guy just killed alot of the ways they had to trash the PS3 because of their inane "console war". Really trying to do whatever they can to make his comment invalid.

Seriously, why do you care if the PS3 IS easy or hard to develop for? Why do you WANT the PS3 to be viewed as hard to develop for?

@Kigmal: I don't think it was JUST the PS2 that killed the Dreamcast. Sega had a BUNCH of internal problems by the time it was released. Their inability to support any console for long helped that along because of what happened with all those Genesis add-ons and how quickly they abandoned the Saturn. That and it's controller took a bit of getting used to (trust me, I had the opportunity to try it out. Took a bit of time for me to get used to it, and this is coming from someone that loved the Gamecube controller).

CViper6271d ago (Edited 6271d ago )

You can't deny that.

However:

MGS4
LBP
Resistance 1 & 2
Motorstorm 1 & 2
Uncharted 1 & 2
Gran Turismo Prologue
MLB08 - 09
Valkyrie Chronicles
Heavenly Sword
Killzone2

Stomp all over all Unreal Engine code that runs more optimized on a system that developers are familiar with.

Sorry, had to do it.

Multiplatforms are good as games that are meant to be equal on both consoles. They are never exactly the same, Bladestar & Power Of Green are too young to remember gaming before this generation, else they would know this as well.

Exclusive games have, and always will be the battleground for hardware power. So far you have this:

Uncharted
MGS4
LBP
Resistance 1 & 2
Motorstorm 1 & 2
Gran Turismo Prologue
MLB08
Valkyrie Chronicles
Heavenly Sword
WipeoutHD

Vs

Gears Of War 2
Halo3
Forza 2
PGR4
Kameo
Just Cause
(the rest of the multiplat "exclusives")

And the PS3's exclusives stomp all over the 360's exclusives when it comes to engine & graphics.

But can Gears of War even be considered? Because it is the Unreal Engine which is multiplatform.. And Halo3 isn't even 700p... Is that even fair to compare?

The Lazy One6271d ago

Capcom did a smart here more than anything. It's easy to make a multi-plat title for the PS3 when you take into account the differences inherent in the PS3. The unreal engine was always designed to run best on a PC, and that's why it doesn't do as well on a PS3.

When you design a game or an engine from the ground up with the architecture of the PS3 in mind, you won't have many troubles. The problems come in when you end up doing something that is expected to work on a PC, then try to port it to the PS3, without accounting for differences.

kwicksandz6271d ago

Capcom gets exclusive PSN store, then has positive spin on PS3 development. Since many, many other developers have said that it is indeed difficult to dev for im going to assume that something is fishy here.

Lost planet for PS3 anyone?

blackpanther256271d ago

i would add something, but to tell you the truth i don't care what haters say. I mean its not like you have a ps3 (because you hate it so much), so what is the point in trying to change other people's opinion about a system (that they bought and love already). lol its like me going into a apple store and try to persuade people into not buying a mac or ipod. Man get a life

On topic: I think it is just a matter of opinion. I mean not everybody is the best/good at what they do. It's like any other occupation. You can go for a checkup and have a doctor tell you that pain in your pelvic region is a cyst and have another doctor (second opinion) tell you that its is hernia. I know weird example lol. I just trying to show how different people who have the same job can come out with different conclusions

La Chance6271d ago (Edited 6271d ago )

Bladestar single handedly owned each and every single sony fanboy up in here...

Geez...that must be the biggest ownage ever on N4G.And none of you guys could prove him wrong...

Keep on waiting for a miracle guys lol.

JD_Shadow6271d ago

Actually, jadenkorri owned Bladestar at 1.15, so I would say that Bladestar didn't own anyone (not that he did to begin with, but since you want to say that Blade OWNED someone). Look at the chart he posted to try to prove his point. Doesn't look like worldwide sales have been that great recently for the 360, both the PS3 and PS2 are outselling them worldwide right now. Bladestar tried to prove one point, but failed at that and instead proved a point that was against him correct. Plus, it's not like you're completely innocent of 360 fanboyism, either (look at your comment history. You've insulted a lot of people for simply having an opinion different than your's, such as me and Ultimolu).

Still, I ask, why do you give a damn about any of this? If you're a gamer, you should be happy that a game company is supporting ALL gaming platforms, not just those that get your seal of approval. I'm not sure where you guys want the PS3 to have that label of "hard to develop for" pinned on it.

Oh, and one more thing to the 360 fanboys: Stop b!tching that I'm taking this stuff "too seriously". It's really your fault that people have to resort to "walls of text" and the seriousness because none of you will ever stop trolling these stories, thus giving us the necessity to find some way to get you to shut up for a moment to actually listen to some reason! The gamers with PS3s never have tried to disprove THIS many positive PS3 stories THIS often, and have never attacked anyone this much and this viciously. If you want us to worship the 360 that badly, tell MS to give us a reason why we should support the system with our money instead of insulting the very same people you end up reporting because you think they insulted you, popping their bubbles just because you didn't agree with them while complaining that people are popping yours and making the gamers on this site and the empty reasons you give as the scapegoat, giving us "facts" and "proof" that a ten year old could disprove in his SLEEP, etc. You don't agree with a comment? Then fine! But act like you've passed the fifth grade when doing so. Please! Thank you!

The Lazy One6271d ago

We all know that's why you resort to walls of text. Walls of text are there because nobody actually reads them and fanboys see "PS3 GOOD LOLOLOLOL" and give you agrees and bubbles without having to convince themselves that your problem ridden argument actually makes sense.

On the flip side, nobody ever tries to prove them wrong because it's only a matter of time before someone radical enough to write something like that straps a bomb to themselves and rids the world of their opinion...

SonyOwnsNextYear6271d ago

LOL...........alot of you see the light now.

PS3 FTW.

plain rice6271d ago

LaChance I bet you didn't even read his post and still replied with a "he single handedly owned everyone" comment. lol

First of all two price cuts for the PS3? since when? All I see is one for both sku's.

Second of all, he's using vgchartz numbers as fact to back up his claim. Seriously WTF?

Raz6271d ago

The only reason the 360 is 'easier' to program for is because it isn't really a console - it's a PC dressed up like one.

So as far as programming for a genuine console goes, Wii is probably the easiest, with the PS3 next in line. Since we aren't comparing PCs to consoles, the 360 doesn't even get an honorable mention.

pwned! ^_^

The Great Melon6271d ago

@1.32
That's a first. You gave me a chuckle. Never heard anyone mention how easy it is to program for the Wii.

The Lazy One6271d ago

the wii's architecture is more PC like than any of the other consoles.

I only hope Capcom can use an antialiasing, cause i'm a big tired of jaggies...

Shane Kim6271d ago

What I've seen of the game, the aliasing is almost non-existant. But then again, if you watch GTA4 movies on GT then play it for yourself it'll be clear as the moon that the game suffers badly from AA.

sajj3166271d ago

I get what he's trying to say ... but just came out wrong :)

GTA IV was loaded with jaggies and the lighting effects were miserable. The first Saints Row was a more attractive open world game.

N4360G6271d ago

I can tell,Resident Evil 5 looks great on both consoles.

christian hour6271d ago

Fanboys rabidly jot down this quote and assign it under "what to use in case of 'hard to develop for' argument". haha. Just Kidding.

Resient evil 5 is looking great on both consoles as the 360 controller above me said, so I'm pretty much seconding his statement!

I just need to decide which console to buy it for... it usually all comes back to wanting to add more points to my gamerscore... DAMN YOU MICRO$OFT!

I mean 0, 1 and Code Veronica should be way before we get into 5 or 6.

Darkseeker34d ago

5 and 6 are so bad that even Capcom want to pretend they don't exist.

Levii_9234d ago

Dude Code Veronica is bad too but RE5 and 6 were mega successful and to me it makes much more sense for Capcom to do them instead. Nobody cares about Code Veronica except niche fixed camera era RE fans, i bet most modern RE fans probably don't know Code Veronica even exists. Based on all that i don't believe CV remake is coming but we will see i guess.

MehmetAlperTR34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Actually RE5-6 was not Classic RE game.. They are not even Survival Horror game.. They are just an action game with coop and named by RE... And for me RE Code Veronica was masterpiece.. I remembered the first time i played it in Dreamcast.. It was absouletly excellent game. And specially for RE6.. I was quit from game after the camera shakes when Leon's kick to zombies.. There's a video about RE6 and they are telling the truth about that shitty game https://www.youtube.com/wat... here it is.. Enjoy it..

Neonridr34d ago

people are DYING for a Code Veronica Remake. Not sure who you are talking to, but the die-hard RE fans of the series are very familiar with every entry. That's what it means to be called a die-hard fan.

neutralgamer199234d ago

Levii

I am sure If they were to remake CV that it 2ont have fixed camera angle. I hope whatever they do they take their time like RE2/4 remakes and not rushed with cut content like RE3 remake

Before they should do RE5 they should go back and remake earlier games. In a perfect scenario we would get CV and RE/Zero before RE5/6

Tapani34d ago

Code Veronica on Dreamcast was absolutely AWESOME.

LucasRuinedChildhood34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

It makes more sense for them to remake earlier games like Code Veronica. RE5 is a good game though - it's not THAT different from RE4.

RE5 just doesn't really need to remade in general. The co-op element makes it tricky - you'd probably add more moments where Chris is by himself enhance the horror but some would want co-op to stay.

thesoftware73034d ago

RE:5 Was and still is a great game, with hands down the best Merc mode, that I still play from time to time with my brother.

RE:6 blah, I agree, it was awful.

Redgrave34d ago

Other than Code Veronica, 6 is the one ai want to see remade the most only because pretty much everything has to be redone; can't streamline that hot mess.

DarXyde34d ago

6 was pretty bad. 5 just tried too hard in being an action-oriented RE4.

In some fairness to Capcom, 5 was the first Resident Evil on then-new hardware for them (X360 and PS3). And it was pretty damn hard to follow up RE4.

Imagine everyone's surprise when EA of all companies dropped Dead Space.

Alos8833d ago

The first half of 5 wouldn't be too hard to do in the more grounded style the remakes have gone for, but the second half gets pretty silly and uncomfortable at parts.
6 is a wash. You'd have to basically make a whole new game to salvage that one at this point.

__y2jb33d ago

6 is garbage. 5 is excellent.

Resident Evil 5 - 15 Years of Being the Most Misunderstood Resident Evil

Resident Evil 5 launched 15 years ago today - and it continues to stand as a stepping stone from the good to the bad.

TheBrainZ718d ago

One of my favourites because of the co-op. Then Resi 6 arrived and the series nosedived further.

Knightofelemia718d ago

I enjoyed the game co-oping with a friend I know the game in solo the AI can be an idiot but RE5 is way better then RE6. I played RE6 with a friend if it wasn't cheap when I got I would have avoided RE6.

thesoftware730718d ago (Edited 718d ago )

5 was excellent, still play Mercs with my brother.
I would love a fully remastered RE:5, with some added, reworked content. The DLC for 5 was also excellent.

6 was awful.

CrimsonWing69718d ago

I never understood why the game was misunderstood. It was a fantastic game at launch and is still fun today to play. It’s as action packed as Resident Evil 4 was, yet that’s regarded a masterpiece 🤷‍♂️

chobit_A5HL3Y718d ago

it was "misunderstood" because they introduced co-op into the franchise at a time when people loved to have fake rage about co-op. like, you could play the game as a solo experience, but people chose to have their bandwagon rage because it was cool at the time lol

-Foxtrot718d ago (Edited 718d ago )

What the hell are you talking about? Fake Rage? Bandwagon? Come on.

You can play it solo but you are forced to carry around a shitty AI partner you have to micro manage. It wasn't as fun solo.

Co-op sucked all the horror, tension and suspense from the game because having a partner covering you was like a safety net. Enemy trying to sneak up on you? No sweat the AI will just automatically lock on, alert you while they shoot first telling you where they are basically.

It was the start of Capcoms fall with the Resident Evil series where it basically become an over the top generic action game which betrayed it's own survival horror roots. Least RE4 had a good blend of both but Capcom just went the wrong way with RE5, especially going off what they were going to do during the RE4.5 beta phase before co-op was added.

franwex718d ago

At least the game was a ton of fun tho. If the game was bad, the outrage would’ve been justified. They simply pivoted for a couple of games. At this point it’s bad because it’s called Resident evil 5? But if was called something else it would’ve been good? Please.

chobit_A5HL3Y717d ago

like i said: fake baby rage and bandwagon hate. res4 wasn't really that scary, either, and was already taking the series into more of an action-oriented direction at the time. 5 was a good game that people fake-hated because of co-op that you didn't even have to play lol hence the fake rage and bandwagon hate. i mean, it obviously did well enough for capcom to go ahead and make 6 the way they did, right? if 5 was so bad, they would have changed what 6 was during development. the difference is that 6 was actually just bad.

people "hate" 5 because res4 was so good, and 5 was just unfortunate enough to be its successor. like i said, 4 wasn't scary, either, and relied more on tension than horror, but it was already more of an action game. if you don't wanna like 5 because it's not scary or whatever- that's fine, but it wasn't meant to be strictly a horror game anymore at that point anyways. the gameplay was a lot faster-paced than 4, so saying that the ai helping you by potentially shooting someone that was sneaking up behind you is a moot point. there were more enemies that were more aggressive, along with newer threats.

5 isn't as good as 4, but it's not a bad game by any stretch.

RNTody692d ago (Edited 692d ago )

What? I always thought RE5 had fake controversy because it was set in South Africa and you shot a bunch of black zombies. I live in South Africa and thought the game was absolutely awesome, played the whole thing co-op with my brother.

@Foxtrot I think you're confusing the garbage Dead Space 3 with Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil 4 was already a hyper action game and had zero fear factor other than the grotesque appearance of some enemies.
