PS3 Informer Preview: Trine

PS3 Informer writes: "Trine is a game that catapulted itself from relative obscurity into the limelight when gameplay videos for the game were first shown in November. PS3 owners were captivated by the level of detail and incredible art direction apparent in the downloadable PSN title. In development by aptly-named Finnish studio Frozenbyte Games, Trine is set to release in the Spring of 2009. It will be a download-only title, and currently remains a PS3 exclusive.

Frozenbyte is currently known for its downloadable PC action game, Shadowgrounds: Survivor. Shadowgrounds was a top-down sci-fi shooter which also placed a heavy emphasis on gorgeous, detailed level design. Trine is set to take graphical even further and set new standards for the look of PSN downloadable games."

I really liked Shadowgrounds and its gore and lighting. Fun little isometric top-down shooter.

I am really starting to like the independent dev stuff that is making its way onto the PSN.

I think Crash Commando is the start of some great PSN-only content, to be followed by the likes of Trine and others.

They should release Shadowgrounds on the PSN as well! Maybe if this game does well enough, they'll consider a port? Anyway, I agree with you, Linux Guru. There are a lot of quality games coming out on the PSN that are brand new independent IP's. HD remakes are fine and dandy, but it's good to balance that out with original content.

I hope the Six Axis controls translate well, otherwise the Wizard might be a bit tricky to play as. From the trailer I saw, it looks as though the "drawing" aspect of the gameplay is well suited to a mouse, but even more so, a Wii-mote. I guess we'll see what it's like when a few more previews are released.

I honestly wish more devs would enable keyboard and mouse support, especially for RPGs. That would be fantastic.

Greatest Video Game Composers: Ari Pulkkinen

VGChartz's Taneli Palola: "Pulkkinen is a relatively new face in the video game industry. Thus far he has worked exclusively on games developed by Finnish game studios, but I wouldn't be surprised if at some point in the near future his music begins to attract attention from elsewhere as well. Given that he is only 34 years old he likely has many more years ahead of him in the video game industry."

On the Tenth Day of Christmas, My True Love Gave to Me: Ten Platforms A-Leaping

"One of the oldest and most integral genres in video gaming is platforming. In the simplest idea, these games involve progressing an avatar through a series of obstacles by jumping from one platform to another. Originating back in the 1980s, platformers are not a pure genre; there is a tendency for other game types to mix in with platforming. For example, Contra gave rise to “run and gun” games; these are a cross of platforming and shooters."-- PlayStation Enthusiast
