Blu-ray Beats Recession

Despite the gloomiest of financial forecasts, sales of Blu-ray disc movies are defying the odds and bucking the credit crunch - with record figures reported in the run up to Christmas. And it's not just films flying off the shelves, Blu-ray disc players are also following suit, with a strong upsurge in European sales that is expected to continue into the New Year. In fact, overall sales are predicted to more than triple in 2009, reaching 2.5million units Europe wide* (and that figure does not even include the millions of Playstation 3 consoles, with their in-built Blu-ray players, that will be sold over the next few months).

PoSTedUP6353d ago

just got a 40" sony bravia so i am still yet to buy some blu-ray movies. i dunno if i can waste money on the dark knight... i seen that thing like 5 times already... i havent seen hancock yet so i will probably pick that one up for my first blu-ray movie. ah.. my ps3... fun anyone?

- Ghost of Sparta -6353d ago (Edited 6353d ago )

Hancock = Waste of money.

Best Blu-ray movies = The Dark Knight, Spiderman Trilogy, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Pirates of Caribbean Trilogy, Matrix Collection, Blade Runner, Kill Bill 1 & 2, Transformers, Starship Troopers, etc. Keep yourself updated with www.blu-ray.com

PS. The Dark Knight looks shockingly amazing on Blu-ray. Like, your eyes will probably melt if you're too weak.

Danja6353d ago (Edited 6353d ago )

I agree The Dark knight is the most visually impressive movie i've ever seen....so far...X-Men : Last Stand is another crappy movie but it's also quite impressive.

Wanted , Hellboy 2 , Iron Man is worth a buy

Watkins6352d ago

This must be wrong, blu-ray is dying!

loki_ns6352d ago

I'll add Casino Royale to the list....

ultimolu6352d ago

That movie sucks. :|

Get either Iron Man or Dark Knight. I have both. ^^
I have yet to get Casino Royale.

SonyOwnsNextYear6352d ago

microsoft fans took my bubbles for stating the truth.

say my name 5 times.

HighDefinition6352d ago

But DarkKnight is a BETTER choice.

Sarcasm6352d ago

Man I feel bad for all these poor suckers buying into a dead Format. We all know HD-DVD is going to win the format war!

:)

UltimateIdiot9116352d ago

Here's something to help you out. Everything in Tier 0 is in top quality. Transformer is somewhere on Tier 0/1. Some sites say Transformer is Tier 1. Personally, I feel it's more Tier 1 quality.

I heard Pan Labyrinth is a good movie but haven't seen it myself. I recommend Wall-e.

PirateThom6352d ago

Pan's Labyrinth is a film I had to go and watch in a dingy student theatre. Fantastic film.

Daver6352d ago

@1.1

Hulk?! are you kidding? its one of the worst movie i have ever seen, i prefer hancock over this

The departed, is a good choice too and its cheap and so is 300

Bolts6352d ago (Edited 6352d ago )

The Dark Knight is a good movie but it's an over rated as BR tittle depending on your taste. 300 is another terrible BR movie, way to much film grain. Ironically enough one of the best BR tittle is Troy, the image quality is crystal clear. Appleseed is an ungodly good looking BR tittle too if you into anime.

Veneno6352d ago

Still do that thing where if you buy a blu-ray player/ps3 you can mail away for 5 free Blu-ray movies?

wUTTer6352d ago

i think Crank was the most clearest movie i ever seen on bluray but The Dark Knight is awesomeness!

Elven66352d ago

Are these the reports they do right after the launch of a anticipated title only to retract their statement when the hype behind the title dies down in the coming weeks?

XGRaViSmOrSX6352d ago

Wall-E or any digitally created movie will have the best digital transfer since its created specifically using CG.

just watch any of the pixar movies on an OLED and tell me its not the best clearest picture possible. looks like you could reach into the screen and pull the characters out.

PS3 Blu-Ray NOT dead6352d ago (Edited 6352d ago )

Where's that M$ PR fatty Aaron Cheeseberger to bash Blu-Ray

Where's the 20 articles that promised that Blu-Ray was dead

Where's FuFoFlu(sp?) and pp and the other Xbots

Hmmm... Blu-Ray thriving and MGS4 -TOUCH- just slapped the fanboys into hiding for awhile

dukadork6352d ago

don't forget sound guys 8-)

Rob0g0rilla6352d ago

I watched Ice Age on Blu-ray on a Samsung 61" DLP and it blew me the hell away.

UltimateIdiot9116352d ago

Disney do have the best qualities. I don't know if you're saying Ice Age is disney or not, but it's Dreamworks btw.

- Ghost of Sparta -6352d ago

I said The Incredible Hulk (Edward Norton, Tim Roth) not The Hulk (Eric Bana).

If you prefer Hancock over The Incredible Hulk then you have very bad taste 'cause that POS is one of the worst reviewed movies of 2008.

40cal6352d ago

Wow, My wife just got this movie for Christmas from a co-worker on Blu-Ray we watched it last night. I thought it was one of the better movies that I have seen this year. It made us laugh out loud at least 6 times.

PoSTedUP get this movie you will enjoy it.

And just a quick FYI. I own around 500 DVDs and 45 Blu-Rays with 7 more sitting under the tree. Also have NetFlix, and we go to the movies on the regular, my wife and myself are huge movie buffs, we view at least 3 a week. About to turn our dining room into a theater for Christ sake, (no kids) 1080p projector, 7.1 surround, seating the whole nine.

I read or watched something a guy says people tend to stay home a lot more in bad times and do stuff to escape reality.

I guess that's why movies and games are not effected much.

Bubble Buddy6352d ago

Yeah I remember in history class back in the recession of 1929-30's most people bought radios and went to watch movies. I guess video games are kind of like the radios.

sonic19896353d ago

And they say bluray is a dead format. whats gona be next? planet earth is not blu.

thereapersson6352d ago

Sometimes it's worth it to go revisit crappy movies just to see how good they look in 1080p.

myothercar6352d ago (Edited 6352d ago )

edit: whoops, accidental reply, second time today

Gun_Senshi6352d ago

Where is that arctile that said X360 will own 2009 due to Recession, DVD > Blu-Ray lol

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle14d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde21d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy22d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7723d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga23d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199222d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga22d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman22d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box23d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion22d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7223d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7522d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit22d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14923d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7723d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
