For what it's worth, I enjoyed 3D gaming when it was supported. Uncharted 3 was fantastic in 3D!

They tried this, with actual 3d cameras too... it was called Kinect.

In all seriousness, it does have good uses for VR... reconstructing a room in 3D space can help with really cool augmented reality experiences.

CrimsonIdol1432d ago

That's not really what this is at all though. This is for the content itself. As you mentioned reconstructing a room using cameras is a done deal, and generally involves 2 or more angles from 2 or more cameras to reconstruct depth from that data, a dedicated depth sensing camera/sensor or a temporal solution to achieve multiple angles from the one camera. All that is to capture 3D data from a 3D world. But this patent is to throw 2D content with no depth data at a neural network and presumably getting guessed/calculated depth from it. My guess is this will be hokey at best, or, more realistic than that, just a patent troll to cash in on anyone else that figures out how to make this work.

fr0sty1428d ago

It isn't new, they already have tech (like in Davinci Resolve) that will generate depth maps of 2D images, which is a rough version of the same thing. This can then be used to mask people or objects out of the frame for coloring, effects, etc.

CrimsonIdol1428d ago (Edited 1428d ago )

Yeah, it's just not something that works without some manual tweaking or "rapidly" (pretty damn rapidly if they want it to work on games). Gaming is probably the stupidest use case tbh since it's really no drama for a game engine to create or supply fully accurate depth data without this roundabout way of achieving it

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing20d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit20d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing20d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9220d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

They would be better breaking up what valued assets they still have and put them out to auction for the competition.
There is no more financial gain for them on any trajectory in the entertainment space.
