Including Spider-Man on Xbox was ‘no problem’, says Midnight Suns developer

Previous speculation suggested Spider-man might be a PlayStation exclusive, even outside of insomniac’s games.

That doesn't make sense, why would anyone think that seeing as how Spider-Man has been in avengers and fortnite since the Playstation game released

darthv721438d ago

he wasnt in the xbox version of avengers. Unless you mean lego avengers...

Silly gameAr1438d ago

Could have just been exclusive content, like when people have marketing rights to games? That's nothing new to any of the consoles out there. Seems like somebody wasn't only immature, but premature with the speculation.

I guess this was before we found out that MS turned down Disney/Marvel when they were asked if they wanted to make exclusive xbox games for Marvel. Seems like xbox kept Spider-Man off of Xbox to me.

CobraKai1438d ago

Insomniac’s game is exclusive, the movie license is held by Sony, but the character is not exclusive on other media like video games. Marvel owns the rights to the character as far as gaming is concerned

zsquaresoff1438d ago

I don't think sony gives a sh*t about spiderman being on xbox via Midnight Sun's.
I don't think the playstation fans either as the games looks pure mobile game trash.

darkrider1438d ago (Edited 1438d ago )

Yeah... And trash isn't even the right word that describes that "game"...

Fishy Fingers1438d ago (Edited 1438d ago )

I mean, being associated with a "trash" game would be more likely to make the owner of the IP care wouldnt it? LOL

Eonjay1438d ago

You mean Marvel? Not really lol. There have been many subpar Marvel games. It doesn't seem to bother Disney one but lol.

babadivad1438d ago

They don't own Spider Man. So even if Sony cared, there isn't a damn thing they can do about it.

badboyz091438d ago

All the recent Hands-Ons said the game was awesome. They couldn't put the controller down.

Exvalos1438d ago

Nobody in the Sony camp cares to be honest

onisama1438d ago

I thought you will say... "they don't care its just a character in the game poeple are so sensitive"... But got disappointed with that" because it a mobile tras. " haha sony fanboy never grow up do they

AmUnRa1438d ago (Edited 1438d ago )

I dont know what poeple are but i do know what people are...

Sony does not own the Spider-Man IP or character. Disney owns the IP and character. Sony has a film license and game license for the Spider-Man.

Sonyslave31438d ago (Edited 1438d ago )

Sony only has the film and I think tv aka cartoons (could be wrong) everything else is Disney.

Insomniac games is because of Disney and same with Wolverine.

purple1011438d ago

Bit of a shady area isn't it! PS3 fat original console had spiderman font etched into the front. Kept that logo untill ps3-slim, when they changed it

Magic_Spatula1438d ago

Correct. Sony has film and joint TV rights (Marvel and Sony can make their own Spidey related tv shows). They also get a certain percentage of toy sales based on whatever Spider-Man related stuff they make. Again, the Spider-Man games are exclusive because that was the deal Marvel made with Sony. They approached Sony to make a Marvel game using any IP. Insomniac chose Spider-Man. Still confounds me as to why people still think that Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man when they never actually did.

CobraKai1438d ago

@magic
I think it’s easy cuz some think that having the movie rights means they have the rights to the character across all media. Having an exclusive Spider-Man game didn’t help much either. Spider-Man games used to be multi platform cuz of Activision, even the movie games. It’s just cuz of PS Spider-Man was a first party game that it’s not multi.

Knightofelemia1438d ago

@Sonyslave3

Sony does hold the film license yes but for Spiderman to appear in the Avengers movie Disney/Marvel would have to make a deal with Sony. There have been articles that Sony and Disney did not play well together. But rehashing out the deal with Sony they probably most likely gave Sony the game rights to Spiderman. And in return Sony said yes Spiderman can be in the Avengers movies. For the Wolverine game since Marvel has the film rights back since Disney bought Fox. Disney must have realized the talent behind Insomniac saw how great Spiderman is and thought ok lets see what they can do with another Marvel character.

Seraphim1438d ago (Edited 1438d ago )

it's not a license. Sony Pictures has sole rights to Spiderman for film/tv as they purchased these from Marvel long before Disney bought the company. A license expires, can be revoked, etc. Simply put there's a pretty big difference between licensing and rights.

as for the subject at hand. It really should be common knowledge at this point that Disney owns the rights for everything outside of film so Spiderman will appear wherever and whenever Disney sees fit. As their approach now is to offer licenses on a game by game basis to any studio who pitches an idea Disney likes. Spiderman has appeared in other games and even on Switch; Marvel UA 3. Having to read this trash every time Spiderman ends up in a new game, on a different platform is old and just stupid. 2 cents

Sciurus_vulgaris1438d ago

The Sony Spider-man film rights since 2015 are actually shared with Marvel Sudios (Disney). Film rights often have stipulations. The production company holding the rights may have to keep producing films using specific characters or else the rights expire.
Sony and Fox [before the Disney buyout] kept releasing and/or rebooting Marvel films to keep film rights.

Imalwaysright1438d ago

No, Sony didn't purchase the movie rights. They have a license to the movies and the license will only expire if in a set time period of time they don't make a spider-man movie wich means that if Sony keeps making movies without missing that time period they can keep the license for as long as they want.

TheCaptainKuchiki1437d ago

"Disney owns the IP" is not correct. It's Sony OWNS the movie rights. THey can do whatever they want without Disney's approval. It's not a license.

Imalwaysright1437d ago (Edited 1437d ago )

"In 1998, long before the current superhero movie boom, Sony struck a deal with Marvel to license the film rights to Spider-Man, along with 900 related Marvel Comics characters. Under the terms of that deal, the movie rights to Spider-Man and characters like Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Vulture, and more will stay with Sony forever, as long as the studio produces at least one Spider-Man movie every five years and nine months.

https://www.slashfilm.com/6...

No, they don't own the movie rights. They were licensed to them.

Sciurus_vulgaris1437d ago

I highly doubt Sony can do what ever they want with Spider-Man as they do not own the character and his associated rogue gallery. There are probably stipulations that would cause Sony to lose rights to Spider-man that haven’t been public ally disclosed. If Sony owns Spider-man, why did they have to get permission to make Spider-Man games ?

Silly gameAr1438d ago

Previous speculation from gaming blogs and people just making guesses? Why do people think that outside of the movies they funded, and the games that they've funded, that Sony cares who does what with Spider-Man? Is this just another thing that people tried their best to make a problem out of, to have something to complain about?

Magic_Spatula1438d ago

It's the ill-informed people. It's not that hard to go looking on the internet for the correct information.

Orchard1438d ago

Not sure why this is a surprise. We've already seen Spider-Man in cross-platform non-Sony games - the character will show up on other platforms, but you won't see dedicated spiderman games on other platforms.

KillBill1438d ago

"...but you won't see dedicated spiderman games on other platforms."- not a fact. Other than specific titling of a game Marvel can go into a deal for a new game featuring Spider-Man as the main character. Spider-Man has a history of games made by many devs and nothing suggests this will ever change.

Lego games are always fun... and that is one I had not played before.

isarai796d ago

It's always the ine they leave out if the headline that interests me most 😅 DBZ Kakarot, been waiting for this to pop up on plus

Kyizen796d ago

I completely missed that DBZ Kakarot was in the group, I have midnight sons and RE3 so was kinda disappointed.

StormSnooper795d ago (Edited 795d ago )

Yea, it’s my last chance to play my childhood, now that he is gone. I’m watching way too many good anime at the moment to rewatch the series but this is the perfect excuse to visit that universe.

jznrpg796d ago

Never played Midnight Suns and probably won’t anytime soon but maybe someday. Pretty good month not great not horrible. I used to love sports games when I was a kid but that was before the monetization they went through and now I avoid them.

phoenixwing796d ago (Edited 796d ago )

Not all sports games are like that but ea and 2k games are definitely

DarXyde796d ago

Definitely give Midnight Suns a download if you've got Plus.

It's great.

phoenixwing786d ago

I agree midnight sun's is fun

Eonjay796d ago (Edited 796d ago )

Heard a lot of good things about Midnight Suns! Also looking forward to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and will probably download 2K24 as well.

LucasRuinedChildhood796d ago (Edited 796d ago )

Not a great month for me. Will give Midnight Suns a go.

I've never played Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier. Might give it a go although it's supposed to just be okay.

Never played a Phoenix Wright game before, so might try Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy.

SonyStyled796d ago

The Lost Frontier isn’t a true Jak and Daxter game. If you haven’t played them before I’d highly advise skipping The Lost Frontier and spending your time on the trilogy. The real Jak games are developed by Naughty Dog

LucasRuinedChildhood796d ago

I'm a big Jak & Daxter fan. Just not that into portables so I never picked this one up (didn't know there was a PS2 port when I was younger).
