Honestly they had a 2008 lineup that with heavy advertising could've given the PS3 way better sales.

Now they have the best lineup for 2009 and I hope they plan on bundles, a new slim model, heavy marketing,etc.

This generation is a marathon, not a sprint. Ps3 has strong endurance and longevity, and if the recession will end, expect the unexpected.

At all these doom and gloom PS3 articles, they are all based around one "fact." Analysts, retailers and consumers all think the PS3 is too expensive. You can argue that "it is worth it" until you are blue in the face, but in a weak economy, price is king. The problem is, unlike stated in the article, Sony is not "putting profit before market share."-- it is a known fact that Sony still LOSES money on every PS3 sold, while MS breaks even and Nintendo makes money. I think that if Sony could drop the price, they would. But they can't afford too, and so instead release a holiday bundle that is MORE expensive than the base system. I work in retail at Gamestop, and since the 160 GB system was released, we have sold 2. The other Gamestop in the mall hasn't sold any, but we sell dozens of 360's and Wiis (if we have them) a day!

Currently yes Sony is losing. Just because they are in last place now does not mean that they will stay there. However I do feel that it will take more than a price cut to get them to number one. Sony really needs to do something to change the image of the PS3 with mainstream consumers. They seem to be losing confidence in the PS3 and some of the negative publicity it has been getting as of late may play a big part in that. They need better advertising along with a price cut and better marketing firm.

In the last week, there have been stories *CORRECTLY* telling this board about the dire and desperate place Sony's PS3 is in from MONEY.CNN.COM, GAMASUTRA and now GUARDIAN.CO.UK -- some very big names in real-world journalism.

If these people cant convince you that the NUMBERS look VERY BAD, then you'll never be convinced.

As a side note, you know, there are still people today who are angry that Amiga isnt the biggest name in Computing. They hold conventions and tell one-another how wonderful Amiga is.

There are the same people who talk this way about Dreamcast.

Short answer, no.

People keep saying the PS3 needs a price cut to be saved. But I don't think that's the case.

The PS3 has been on the market for a couple of years. They have potentially 8 years or more of sales left. So why would they follow MS and make huge price cuts? Sony made some pretty huge cuts shortly after release.

This is a product with a 10 year (at least) life cycle. So why would Sony even consider a proice cut to match Microsoft. It would make no sense.

Microsoft are probably looking at a 5 year life cycle - maybe 7 years max. It makes perfect sense for MS to have cut the price already - they are further in to the product life cycle. (Although their price cut is a slightly more agressive than I would have anticipated)

Sony, first and foremost, need to be breaking even or making a profit on the PS3 before a price cut is consdiered. They are a business and they like to make money!

If Nintendo are 'only' making $6 per Wii (as recently stated), then chances are MS are no longer making much (if any) profit on the more complex 360.

When you then factor in the PS3 sales figures - they are actually OK. It's a pointless comparison, but Sony have sold more PS3's in the first 2 years of the PS3's life than MS did in the first 2 years of the 360's life.

Anyone who actually owns a PS3 - and that's a fair few million these days - knows the PS3 is in great shape.

What we also have to remember is... There is no console war. It's a just a media and fanboy term thrown around. The only thing that matters is profit to Sony/MS/Nintendo. To a slightly lesser extent market share is also important - and this is where Sony have lost out.

But as markets mature and get more aggressive it's natural that market share will change - however as markets mature they often get bigger. So even if Sony loses 50% of it's market share, the total units sold may not fluctaute as much.

If people want to create a console war they should be comparing profotability of the comparative departments (company comparisons is pointless as well). Sales figures mean nothing. Profit is the only measure of success, and by that comparison both Sony and MS are losing.

Couldn't have put it better myself. The whole problem with this "console war" is that the uninformed have no concept of Sony or MS having other products out there. Sony for example are the main players of the TV show the X-Factor, and they generate huge amounts of money from that alone. Never mind the millions MS make with PC stuff.

He says Sony lost his leading position (which is quite obvious) but stil has very strong arguments for the future ! He even says the PS3 could outsell the 360 in 2009.

They've been catching up with the 360 in Europe all year long and if it wasn't for the price cuts of the 360, it would have made up some ground in the US as well. With the huge amount of awesome PS3 exclusive and the imminent price drop in 2009, people will realize that the PS3 is doing much better than all the propaganda articles want you to believe.

If MS and Sony would just chill on their infactuation with eachother to do what they could against the Wii, they'd be better off. This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.
