The Wii's First Flop?

The Nintendo Wii is still red-hot. Two years after its release, shoppers continue to have a hard time finding it in stores. One might be tempted to say the console can do no wrong, except that's not exactly true. Wii Music, the much-hyped game from renowned designer Shigeru Miyamoto, is considered by some to be, well, a bit of a flop.

Yeah, no kidding. The shovelware express has been dropping nuggets of flop since launch. First party gems are there, but they're few and far between. Most 3rd parties are just trying to cash-in with as little effort as possible.

jorgeanaya0006368d ago

I think they mean first party games.

ChickeyCantor6368d ago

yeah they meant "wii" franchise.
Third party shovel storm = third party shovel storm.

But looking at charts/top# Wii-music isn't selling "bad", it's selling slow though.

Mario kart is selling like crazy though...and Wii-music even if it failed...he would just make something like that again, you can count on it.

Danja6367d ago

well atleast the Wii owners were smart enough to ignore this crap..

it's not even a fully fleshed out game....

Rockband 2 kills this....*I purposely said that btw Sidar" ..XD

PS3 Blu-Ray NOT dead6367d ago (Edited 6367d ago )

The Wii's first flop was launching the console

Mahr6367d ago

"The Wii's first flop was launching the console"

No, I'm certain that's the PS3 you're thinking of.

Bubble Buddy6367d ago

First? The first this week yes?

Jecht6367d ago

I was going to say the EXACT same thing.

It sure as hell is NOT it's FIRST flop.

kesvalk6367d ago

if wiimusic had a music composer like mario paint, i would be cool...

but it doesn't even have this...

it would be a great music sandbox, but unfortunately, it's not...

gaffyh6367d ago

Even if it didn't flop, the game is still a pile of sh*t. And not all games that flop are bad e.g. Okami, Ico, Shadow of The Colossus, Psychonauts

All of the games above would be classed as flops, usually by xbox fanboys, but not limited to them. :D

ChickeyCantor6367d ago (Edited 6367d ago )

@danja,
I know why you said it, just to let you know i have GH:World Tour.

People disagree with me just with the fact because of a subjective matter, they hate Wii-music, not because they are looking at facts.

and the fact is,
Wii-music isn't selling as bad people make it out to be.

also
from the article:
"
So why the poor showing? Reviews on Wii Music have been "meh" at best, and the track list isn't exactly full of rockin' tunes ("Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," anyone?). Additionally, Rock Band and Guitar Hero allow gamers to download more tunes online. With Wii Music, you're stuck with what comes on the disc.
"

Well Call of duty got high scores....so even though it's not selling as great as the other 2 it's a flop?
Funny how people think that games are sold based on a rating.

"Wii Music is "far behind" its two music-game rivals, Guitar Hero and Rock Band. "

Wait wait wait, it's not a rival since it goes to different audiences.
This article basically asks if this is a flop because it's not selling the same amount as those 2 games.

The title is misleading, it's flametractive.

No where does this article sate, wether it's selling or not.
It's just comparing popularity and the amounts of copies sold between the games.

Misleading as hell.

Wii music flopped? That's news to me, I was under the impression that it sold pretty well, wasn't it in the top ten NPD november?

Baka-akaB6367d ago

It's a matter of opinion i guess, i dont find these numbers to indicate any success , given the wii's install base , the good ratios of casual owners , and the success of past casual nintendo games .

Anyway it's just my take , and another of mine , is that i'm glad if it flops . It could at the very least mean that the casual masses can draw a limit and might not just blindly accept anything targeted at them .

johover1126367d ago

Oh and Mario Sluggers was a hit? lol
damn Nintendo, its time to leave Mario alone.
he's been in space, baseball, soccer, even PAPER ITSELF.
END THIS CRAP ALREADY!

....Sonic feels your pain. lol

Durffen6367d ago

The title should be "Nintendo's first flop? Or something along those lines indicating that you mean it's Nintendo's first flop for first party title.

Wii has had plenty, and I mean plenty of flops.

Nathan Drake6367d ago

They've had plenty of other first party games that failed to chart and or garner critical praise.

Wii Music is the first Nintendo Wii first party game to show that Nintendos Blue Ocean strategy isn't flawless.

I think the main reason why it didn't/isn't putting up Wii Sports numbers is because there's no new gimmick attached to it,you just move your controller around like every other Wii game before it.

Spike476367d ago

I'm guessing all those sales atm are coming from people who don't know sh*t about gaming aka casual gamers.

LokMessier6367d ago

The simplicity of the Wii mote mixed with the games that come out for the Wii {Family appeal} is what drives the Wii home. The price tag may look nice, but overall people still find the Wii more visually appealing for one reason or another.

Baka-akaB6367d ago

i dont feel it was really because of the price that the wii was successful . It's actually quite high considering that many games are (no offense but ...) tech wise gamecube level , outside of nintendo's usual quality and a few gems .

Imo it just happens that at least the Wii didnt reach the far too steep level of price of the ps3 , and had the appeals we know .

Parapraxis6367d ago (Edited 6367d ago )

The Wii is the iPod of the gaming industry. It has the "it's hip, i need one" appeal.

The Unexpected Legacy of Wii Music

NLife:
As tradition mandates every year, I sat watching the Nintendo's 2008 E3 presentation with high hopes of a new F-Zero being finally announced. As the presentation moved along, Cammie Dunnaway kept pushing products that were clearly not targeted at me and my generation of core gamers, bought up in the mean streets of 8- and 16-Bits. No harm there, since Nintendo's and the late great Satoru Iwata's new vision of "games for everyone" meant that there was a whole new audience to whom Nintendo had to push product presentations. I understood that, and was feeling positive because surely there had to be some sort of killer app being shown at the end of the presentation, right?

Game Soundtrack Stereotypes & Patterns...Sounds Familiar?

I couldn’t help but be surprised when I began noticing (from time to time) patterns in the way music is used within games. The following short list of game soundtrack stereotypes and patterns are by no means the result of a scientific process, but I do think it would be interesting to dip the metaphorical toe in the water and start this discussion!

I was expecting an article about the entire industry. This is sort of the norm for these types of games though.
