Microsoft: All About Games Development

Spong Write: Tell that to Ensemble.

Microsoft might be the platform holder currently storming the 'new-gen' hardware battlements, but it says it's all about games development not hardware.

"Game development is the core of what we do", said Alan Bowman, head of Xbox operations in Asia. "Microsoft is a software company by heart, and we will continue to work with our partners and by ourselves to develop new software for the market."

Bowman also said that there are no specific cost-cutting measures being implemented at Microsoft to deal with the global economic downturn.

Despite both those statements, Microsoft recently decided to kill Ensemble Studios, the developer behind one of its upcoming AAA games - Halo Wars. There would appear to be something of a mixed message there. Maybe Bowman missed a memo?

They've always done this, more promentantly during the XBOX brand.

mikeslemonade6378d ago

In order to be successful you must have good hardware and software internally. Microsoft does neither extremely well. Microsoft 1st party is only Rare. The hardware nothing needs to be said about that. The only thing that may seem they are good at is buying games and marketing but you don't know how much they spend money to do that.

It's all about the green.
What do you expect, the color of XBOX 360 already indicate what they care the most about. I'm sure All corporate only care about the green, well at least MS being honest about that.

UltimateIdiot9116379d ago

Really? They could have fool me especially after closing ensemble.

Pizzagaki6379d ago

Pizzagaki agrees that gameplay should be the first priority!

akaFullMetal6379d ago

they might be saying that, but like the article says they are sending mixed signals then, with the closing of Ensemble studios and letting Bungie becoming independent,I dont know?

ukilnme6379d ago

I totally agree. I think they should have taken a shot at aquiring Bioware.

prowiew6378d ago

Ive never played an ensemble game, but they specialized in pc gaming and pc gaming is almost dead. Thanks to halo brand, probably halo wars will sell well. But really, ensemble didnt have a future at any of the three companies. They were better being independent.

PC Gaming isn't dead as you make it sound. It still is very popular platform to play on. RTS and MMO are still popular on the PC (WoW, Warcraft 3, Spore, ETC)including FPS like Counterstrike & Left 4 Dead, not to mention the new Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 coming out in 2009. The only companies sucessful on the PC are Blizzard, Valve, and Maxis and Esenmble was one of those companies before they closed down with their AOE and AOM games

I think Crackdown would fit in a more turn-based tactics system via Xcom then a RTS type game play. Being able to customize multiple agents, deploying that group in an crime infested urban zone, going against other super powered enemy and fodder type thugs. The potential for that is huge if they won't do another successful, ground breaking, GOTY open world outing like Crackdown 3....

P_Bomb1179d ago

I could see that. I feel like State of Decay could spin-off into something strategic as well.

giovonni1178d ago

Actually that would be kind of fly if they made it a turn base RTS.

lellkay815d ago

Crackdown tactics would be legit!!

Are you trying to give people cancer?

Halo 4 has the hottest Cortana too which explains why the MC is the hardest in that campaign and why H4's multiplayer is the illest. Chief ain't afraid to take on teleporting enemies that can one hit melee kill.
