2022 is the Year of the PlayStation 5

2022 will see PlayStation 5 reach new heights for gamers. However, what's more important to note is its position amongst the mainstream.

SullysCigar1373d ago

Well sure. I'm hoping it's also the year of the PS VR2, if it doesn't get officially bumped to '23.

SO pumped for GOW Ragnarok, among others, in the meantime though!

Obscure_Observer1373d ago

"Well sure."

I would not be so sure considering the possibility of PS5´s units shortage continues throughout the year. Even with the releases of Horizon: FW and GT7, Xbox Series consoles still outsold the PS5 with zero first party game released.

All hopes lies on Ragnarok which will probably face Starfield, Redfall and Forza Motorsport.

CaptainHenry9161373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

If shortages ever gets better for the PS5 (and that's a big if), Ragnarok will embarrass all 3 of those game's in *sales* and I expect everything to go back to normal for the PS5. Not to mention I really believe Starfield and Redfall will get delayed to early 2023 imho. And I also think Starfield will be similar to No Man Sky (realistic approach) and probably end up being the most overrated game this generation just like Cyberpunk. We don't know anything about Redfall and at this point its just a big question mark. I have more faith in Forspoken than Redfall at the moment but that can change. Time will tell though. Bethesda lost it's touch a few years ago imo.

Lightning771373d ago

"If shortages ever gets better for the PS5 (and that's a big if), Ragnarok will embarrass all 3 of those game's in *sales*"

All 3? That's some lofty and unrealistic expectations. 1 game to outsell all 3 combined is simply not happening. I can see it outselling Redfall, more or lesson par with Forza 8 and Starfield remains to be seen. That vastly depends if the game lives up to the hype or not.

"and I expect everything to go back to normal for the PS5."

Highly possible in most cases but I think in the U. S. And parts of Europe it'll be split.

You know Captain you've made all. These takes about Xbox for awhile and none of them have ever came true. Redfall being in 2023 is the only lvl headed take you have. I always go with the exact opposite of what you your opinions are because you hardly or ever right about anything Xbox related. In other words expect Starfield to be a major success. It's like you're a good luck charm whenever you give your opinion on Xbox stuff.

CaptainHenry9161373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

@Lightning77

I guess you're going to be disappointed then when I am right about God of War outselling all 3. Last time I checked all Xbox exclusives is on gamepass now so I don't know how Starfield and Redfall will outsell a $70 dollar game. Heck I might play Starfield for free with windows gamepass if it's any good. So it's very realistic for God of War to outsell all 3. I also said that the PS5 will outsell the Xbox this generation just like every generation

Lightning771372d ago

@Captain I forgot about gamepass tbh. Raw sales Ragnarok will most likely take the cake while X Studio games will have a big player base across their ecosystem. Though gamepass players still buy games, it'll be interesting how many purchase Starfield. Guess we'll have to see.

Starfield is being made by 100s of ppl and big team of veterans lead by Todd Howard. It's not a small indie team with a big budget like No Man's Sky. No where near the same.

The PS5 is riding off the momentum of the PS4 so it's no brainer the PS5 will continue to sell the way it does ahead of Xbox. Everyone and the dog saw that coming.

CaptainHenry9161372d ago (Edited 1372d ago )

"The PS5 is riding off the momentum of the PS4 so it's no brainer the PS5 will continue to sell the way it does ahead of Xbox. Everyone and the dog saw that coming."

The Xbox 360 came out a year before the PS3 and the PS3 still outsold it. Just saying. It takes more than momentum. I also predicted that the PS3 would outsell the 360 at the end of that generation. It's just a *trend* with Sony consoles. But to be honest I could care less I'm just stating facts

1372d ago
DarXyde1372d ago

That's a strange pivot, lad.

First, you acknowledge the shortage, then go on to mention "even with releases of" the big games as if they have not been enough to increase sales.

Surely, you must understand that even with 30 must have 10/10 titles dropping tomorrow for $10 each, hardware sales are likely to remain lower than Xbox right now. I highly suspect they are selling everything they can and desire for titles is irrelevant if you cannot keep up with demand for the console.

It's certainly Sony's own fault, but I genuinely doubt Xbox selling better is because people want an Xbox over PS5.

KingofBandits1372d ago (Edited 1372d ago )

console war fanboy nonsense aside, I don't see how 2022 and 2023 even register for Xbox. Yes the consoles have had an uptick in sales mostly because MS can source parts easier now and get them out, its not like no one wants them, but when they can remain in stock for 72 hours+ even with the current market, demand is reaching its peak. All that said, consumer mind share still belongs to PS5. The console still generates lines at stores, scalpers are still able to fleece people to get them and most big third party releases are associated with the PS5 more so then the Xbox right now. Then factor in the Xbox has not had an exclusive since Halo, and that has been poorly received in the long term. The Xbox also has no big games from now until maybe a year from now.

anast1372d ago

Xbox is still way behind. They are the 3rd option at the dance. A janky live service and an arcade racer wasn't enough to put them ahead.

Stanjara1372d ago

Why people bought SS is beyond me.

darthv721372d ago

@jara... its cheap, compact, and quite performant.

darkrider1372d ago (Edited 1372d ago )

Dude we play games not sold consoles. Xbox got zero games this year and payed to have more chips then Sony... It's another terrible year from Microsoft and not even those pc games that console gamers care they have this year...

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen1372d ago

Still the rabid console warrior huh?

If Sony continues to do the same thing Nintendo does (DELIVER GAMES) PlayStation will be king of the hill again.

Eonjay1372d ago

You make it sound like there were mountains of PS5s to buy and everyone just went out and got an Xbox instead.

GoW is my most anticipated game this year for PS just as Forza Motorsport is for XB. It looks like a good year for those who have one or the other (or both). PSVR2 looks sweet, but hope it too doesnt succumb to the chip shortage that has befallen the industry

SullysCigar1373d ago

I'm certainly no expert, but I wouldn't have thought the chip shortage would affect PS VR2 based on what we know about it?

Happy to stand corrected, but really hope I'm right here!

darthv721372d ago

@sully, I hope so given how many other chip dependent industries are also feeling the sting.

darkrider1372d ago

Another forza. That just doesn't cut. That formula is over. At least two year between forza and forza horizon... For the casuals that's 90% of the market it's another racer... No hype whatsoever

neutralgamer19921372d ago (Edited 1372d ago )

Honestly I really hope Xbox steps it's game up. We don't need year of any console, what we do need is real stiff competition. I miss the 360/PS3 days because both consoles were neck and neck and constantly trying to out do each other

As gamers that's what we should hope for is healthy competition. If every year both PlayStation and Xbox games are real contenders for GOTY and selling neck and neck that's what best for gamers. That comes with added benefits of neither company can act greedily and instead try to seem gamer friendly

CaptainHenry9161373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

PS5"S is not even available. So how will it be the year of the PS5 🤔

Elda1372d ago

It's still the year for PS for PS owners that are simply enjoying playing the games they like on their PS.

darkrider1372d ago

Because gamers are getting games. And there are choices for 20 millions of gamers with ps5 and 120 millions with ps4. The other side got zero games launched. Except the biggest flop of the year.. Somekind of fps that nobody care because it was so badddd.

CaptainHenry9161372d ago

Good one for adding the PS4 to the mix. I wasn't thinking about that

isarai1373d ago

Till shortages end, the industry is basically on a leash. I just want the chip shortage to end already. Also lumber/plywood shortage. Both my main hobbies are getting wrecked by shortages 😥

kevco331373d ago

Intrigued as to what your other 'main hobby' is...?

isarai1373d ago

Making/woodworking 🤷‍♂️

kevco331372d ago

Pretty different to gaming! I'm useless with my hands. But I do need a new storage system for my 1,500+ PS3/360 games...

Workshyskiver1372d ago

Mine too isarai, I cry whenever I buy wood these days. Even Bowl Blanks are ridiculously expensive for my Lathe too.

isarai1372d ago

I just started using a lathe, using a mini lathe and free wood from the trees on my property to get started, very hard learning the basics using this extremely hard maple and ash i have lying around from fallen branches of my trees 😅

sparky771373d ago

"2022 is the year to get a PlayStation 5.... And the same could be said for the Xbox Series X|S, too"

Not even the author can deny it's the year of Xbox lol.

ApocalypseShadow1373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

It's always funny to see the fringe Xbox fan measurements where 2-3 months is considered a year.

With that kind of counting, I don't own 2 cars. I own a fleet.

To the PlayStation fan, every year is the year of PlayStation.

darkrider1372d ago

This is the 4 month almost 5. Not 2...

ChasterMies1372d ago

2022 is just another year for Xbox. The only hihbglt anticipated exclusive Xbox has this year is Starfield, if Starfield doesn’t see a delay and if Starfield is good. (Can we see gameplay?)

Chevalier1372d ago

I don't really understand how everyone places there hopes on Starfield? Even Skyrim their most popular game took 9 platforms to sell 30 million copies over 3 generations and 10+ years.

darkrider1372d ago

How. Tell how is the year of the Xbox? Tell how many new Microsoft games have you played this year? Blockbuster games? Games? Well it's a big fat zero. How many Sony games.
Adventure
Fighting
Open world
Sobrenatural
Racing
VS zero

Elda1372d ago

Exactly. The only big-budget games released on XB were in 2021 & that was the usual car game Forza & Halo Infinite. There are no AAA XB exclusives being released on XB throughout most of this year until November & hopefully that doesn't get delayed. My XBSS is basically collecting dust.

Lightning771372d ago

"How. Tell how is the year of the Xbox?"

Umm, nobody said it was the year of the Xbox, the article states it's the year of PS5.

Are you ok?

GoodGuy091372d ago (Edited 1372d ago )

If Ragnarok actually comes out then yes definitely. However, its April and we still haven't seen or heard anything so I've a feeling a delay will be announced soon. Also odd for a huge ps exclusive to come out at the end of the year. If it were to come out this summer, we would've heard of it months ago. We had forbidden west and gt7 but Elden Ring takes the crown as goty currently. We don't even know if ps even has any other exclusives (no pc/console exclusives included) this year. Nintendos more stacked in exclusives for this year lol. Xbox has....who knows...gamepass I guess.

But time will tell, we need a state a play/more news from Sony. Don't forget that stock is also still terrible. Nintendo and 3rd parties are the most up there at the moment so...this title makes no sense at this time.

Go ahead and disagree lol, you know this to be the truth.

StarkR3ality1372d ago

Agreed, Playstation are having a better year but it's not like it's back to back games one after another. God of war might not even come out and that's one game they released that's noteworthy for me, GT7 was a shit show.

Spread across two main entries of the franchise, it just is a very respectable success, isn't it.

Although I personally didn't click with the Horizon games, I can a) clearly see the appeal of it. From art direction and technical brilliance.

And b) - I am so happy for Guerilla Games that they've created an IP that's finally been giving financial success back to them and SIE.

Joining the company's club of tens of millions of copies being sold like Spiderman, God of War or The Last of Us did.

All "Big Five" studios at Playstation are on par. Which is just great and hopefully just contributes to a healthy work environment between all of them.

Notellin58d ago

This is including the Horizon VR game and also Lego game.

Notellin58d ago (Edited 58d ago )

@Z501 The article clearly states otherwise that it includes all titles in the franchise. Even the link included that information.

The first comment on the ResetEra source link which was translated the first comment even says. "The Power of Lego".

dveio57d ago

Wouldn't you agree that the main portion (>90%) of the Horizon sales are tied to Zero Dawn and Forbidden West?

Or asked differently:

Point us towards the sales of the VR and Lego game combined!

Puty58d ago

Interesting. It wasn't a massive hit on PS. Maybe it did much better on PC?

Miraak82 58d ago

Pretty sure a big contributing factor is that they were bundled with the consoles at some point , I personally got the bundle because it was the only version I could get when there were ps5 shortages . They gave the first one away on ps+ the first couple years for initial ps5 adopters . I tried the 1st game for like 20ish hours , didn't really appeal to me and haven't played the 2nd even though I own it . The VR version was bundled with the headset and lego horizon added to the total to series sales number . Looking with those optics in mind it's hard to account for individual sales , the first game I know was a success but I don't think the 2nd was as successful without the contributing factor I listed above

Redemption-6458d ago

Wow, the copium is strong. The second was successful even when with or without the stupidity you listed. They can actually easily tell how much the game sold, you just don't want to accept facts. A game being on PS plus doesn't count as a sale pea brain.

Also, bundles make up a small % of the sales. COD, FIFA, Red Dead 2, GOW, 2K, Mario Kart and many more all have bundles. I have never seen any of you call their sales into question, yet the second Horizon comes up, well it was bundled. There were millions of systems sold without this game. These systems were always the ones that sold out 1st

The game being this successful seems to really triggered some people a lot.

P_Bomb58d ago

@Red
Don’t ya know? If they don’t like the game, there’s no way anybody else did. Their friend list is more accurate than your friend list. Their conspiracy theory doesn’t answer to shareholders. Feelings > facts.

InUrFoxHole58d ago

@Redemption-64
That has to be one of the most childish responses.. Even for N4G standards. Honestly you both could solve this by posting the numbers breakdown. Console bundles account for a small number? How small? If they account for a good number? Then how much?

Miraak82 58d ago

@InUrFoxHole

LoL It's so easy to trigger people on this site . I tried to list a numbers of factors that could've been cumulative reasons to why it sold well but he and the down voters be getting mad and resort to name calling ... not even worth my time. Obviously if the 1st game sold like 25 mill and the 2nd sold like 15 mil then my point still stands that the second game didn't sell as well by a large margin . Add in bundles and the free giveaways ( with the $10 upgrade to add to the sale factor) and other none main entries ( which the article didn't specify it was only ) could've added to the total.

Even people commenting that they love the series with very minute criticisms the fanboys start crashing out like Sony games are holier then thou even though almost every sequel they've put out perform significantly worse then the originals . I wasn't even really trying to knock it as a series as opposed to just being a little sus about the sales figures but a majority can't handle opinions that aren't their own ... so soft so squishy haha

Redemption-6457d ago

@InUrFoxHole

Just to you and your pathetic ilk. Sony's fiscal year 2021 (FY21) Q4 covered the three months ended March 31, 2022. During this time period they sold around 2M PS5s. Horizon forbidden west released during this quarter. The next quarter was Sony's fiscal year 2022 first quarter (FY22 Q1) ended on June 30, 2022. This period covers the three months from April 1, 2022, to June 30, 2022. They sold around 2.4M PS5s. Before the holiday season, PS5 was averaging around 600K to 800K a month. Hell if memory serves me correctly, they sold around 500-600K PS5s the same month that Horizon forbidden west was released. Keep in mind this is all PS5 sales, from all bundles to stand-alone systems. Same year, Sony also had the GOW and COD PS5 bundles. Also, are we forgetting Horizon forbidden west also released on PS4? Figures suggest the PS4 version was a significant portion of early sales. The PS4 didn't have a bundle of the game. So should we ignore the PS4 with the bigger player base and pretend most the this game sales were on PS5 and due to bundles?

In 2023 when it was announced that Horizon forbidden west has sold around 10M, a smooth brain like @Miraak82 said on Twitter and I quote:
"The point is that out of the ten million sold this year, most were bundles and most were horizon bundles. It’s not hard. Transitive property shows you that if ps5s sell and they come with a game, the game sells. It’s not an argument, that’s what happened."

Christopher Dring, editor-in-chief and co-founder of The game business responded saying: "But 80%+ of Horizon's sales across Europe were not part of a bundle" He is known for his expertise in the video games market, particularly for his analysis of sales and data.

It takes a special breed of stupid to see this game and start screaming it only sold because it was bundled or most of it's sales were from bundles, completely ignore PS4 sales, and other PS5 game bundles

lukasmain58d ago

What in the rabid hell are you talking about? Both games were a massive success on PS.

Extermin8or3_58d ago

The first sold in the region of 20 million on ps alone. The sequel did less mainly cos sony used it as an experiment with ps plus.

Miraak82 58d ago

They basically gave the first game for free or at bargain bin prices or bundled with every ps4/5 before they jacked up the price again with the ps5 upgrade , most people on my friends list played ZD and of all those people only 1 played FW . I only tried ZD because I was a KZ fan and initial impressions had me curious but once I tried it I was like meh . Without massive marketing and push from Sony I wonder how successful it would have been and how part 3 and the supposed MMo will fair now that people know what to expect

Redemption-6458d ago

@Miraak82

Games on plus do not count as sales. Seriously is this rocket science to a person like you? I get the copium is strong with you, but it's honestly pathetic the mental gymnastics you people come up with. Sony had said putting Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation Plus caused significant lost sales for them.

Miraak82 58d ago (Edited 58d ago )

Redemption-64
They gave that game away for free , even if you weren't subbed you could still play it as it counted as a purchase , you can't just believe Sony is so honorable and high and mighty that they wouldn't skew the numbers in some form ... so naive .

Redemption-6458d ago

@Miraak82

Sorry, are you stupid of something? Honest question. Since when did something free count as a sale? As a public trade company, you know lying about sales can lead to legal problems right? It is literally illegal for them to lie about the sales of a product and can result in server consequences. So I will ask again, are you really that stupid?

Also the Sony themselves said the games that came with Play at Home initiative are free. Can you please provide us with a link to backup your lies. Please show is all the games giving away were all counted as sales. I'm sure you have insider information to show Sony lied to their shareholders about the sales of their games.

Miraak82 58d ago

Could count as a sale if those people did the $10 upgrade , if I decide to try it out again I would definitely do it and I’m pretty sure a lot of those people did . There’s plenty of ways to prop up sales numbers even counting the lowest of margins lol

Redemption-6457d ago

@Miraak82

Could count as a sale if those people did the $10 upgrade?

Seriously, where the hell are you getting these lies from? Sony themselves literally call it an upgrade. The most they can do is add it to the revenue of the game, not a sale. Can you please provide proof to backup your ignorance? Thanks in advance

Amphion58d ago

Yup most of the sales are on PC.

Scissorman58d ago

Horizon has sold maybe 5-6 million copies between both games on PC, leaving the remaining 35 million from PlayStation.

rokos58d ago

Both main games launched just before other juggernauts of the industry, that is why they couldn't create a lot of buzz with their releases.
The first game Zero Dawn was released two days prior Breath of the Wild.
The second game Forbidden West was released less than a week prior Elden Ring.

Gamersunite88058d ago

The first one sold 24 million on the PS4. And, Forbidden West sold 10 million. I'm pretty sure that leaves six to eight million for PC. LOL

Pyrofire9557d ago

No it did pretty well on console, especially when factoring the remake of Zero Dawn that nobody asked for. ZD is also one of Playstations more successful PC launches even tho the performance was bad but it was a first for PS releasing on PC so there was a novelty to it.
I don't believe I heard much about Forbidden West aside from it not doing as well on PC as ZD.
Lastly there was the VR game which being one of the few PSVR2 games (and only first party) it probably did alright for PSVR2, and the Lego Horizon game which launched everywhere; and I'm not sure if anyone has played it.

It's a great series but the 2nd game just went over lard with some nonsense story decisions. Hopefully the 3rd game comes full circle and gives the lone tike fans a great end to the story. 1st game is the best and 2nd is very good. It's the same writer who wrote fallout new Vegas so I have high hopes for a strong finish

CantThinkOfAUsername58d ago

Hopefully they'll make another IP before revisiting Horizon again.

Pyrofire9557d ago

Same, I'd like to see something new from Guerilla, Naughty Dog too for that matter.

Honestly I'm a huge fan of the franchise so i'm glad to see the success. I feel like the games and IP get a lot of unwarranted stick.
