Did CNN Call PlayStation 3 A Sinking Ship?

Soon after NPD Group's sales statistics reported a decline in PS3 sales since November 2007, the vultures began circling Sony's gaming machine. CNN's own Silicon Alley Insider was one such vulture that claimed the PS3 is a sinking ship. But are its criticisms founded?

"CNN's own Silicon Alley Insider"

The author's being way too polite by using the word "insider."

After reading that <ahem> "article", I couldn't help but wonder whether CNN's feeling the pinch of the recession as well, and compensating by hiring biased, pimply-faced bloggers in exchange for fifteen minutes of fame on CNN's website.

Isn't there supposed to exist sort of code of ethics or integrity with professional journalism.

Oh, wait...CNN. Uh, never mind.

These are the same dudes who brought us the unprecedented "Tank Cam" during the US's invasion of Iraq.

SmokeyMcBear6383d ago

wait...wasnt your name torchy?

The author of the CNN article wrote 3 pieces attacking Sony in 2 days. Nothing more need be said about the purpose. He wrote a 4th article 2 days later discussing the secret inventions of Microsoft.

I do not believe anything further need be discussed concerning him. Except maybe this:

Wow this is beyond pathetic seriously someones says something bad a ps3 or sony and every fanboy on this site attacks them saying its a conspiracy of some kind or that MS paid them off. Seriously how sad is that these fanboys have been completely brainwashed by sony. They do have brains to wash dont they ?

shotputking6383d ago

you guys are 100% correct, CNN only hires amatuers and they are all a bunch of fanboys anyways... grow up.

CNN (Communist News Network) has in fact gone down hill in so many ways for the past few years. It's a shame too, they were once a credible source of journalistic excellence. Now they are a source of drooling bloggers that would rather rant on a viable console of entertainment than actually check their facts - or should I say falsehoods.

In all honesty, one place I do not go for gaming related news is CNN. Others would be FOX and MSNBC...

bpac1234567896383d ago

First of all the ps3 is not a sinking ship. Blu- ray is doing well with the dark knight seeing 600,000 copies sold in the first day! Sony has outsold xbox 360 almost every month of the year. they are only falling behind now because of the economy. the economy is the sinking ship not the ps3. Also the $200 xbox 360 is not a bargain unless you are an extremely casual gamer (and i mean extremely). You get no hard drive, which you need if you want to download any movies, demos, music, or save more than a few games. You also don't receive wifi which is becoming more and more common in electronic items.

-on a side note CNN is very unprofessional. It is alright to have a negative viewpoint of a console. But when you grossly exaggerate facts or just warp them completely, that's no longer news, it's slander.

The Washington Post. The fact is, Sony is not doing well. The gaming division has yet to make a single dollar on the PS3 hardware and they won't for years to come. Of course, that is how it works. The sale numbers are terrible, especially for this time of year.

Sony a sinking ship? No. Sony in trouble? Yes.

Sony needs to begin bringing out killer titles. Titles that MS doesn't have. Sony has my support! You can do it!

Also, CNN isn't anti-Sony, they are simply outsiders looking at a business and making a evaluation. That is why forecasters and other sources are saying the same thing. Makes sense from that aspect!

On a personal note: Maybe Killzone 2 will give me a reason to turn on the PS3. Currently there are no games that are worth making me turn off the 360. All of my friends have both systems and if a multi - platform game comes out, we get it for the 360. Simply a better experience. Sony needs to do something quickly to prevent MS from continuing and increasing their dominance.

xwabbit6383d ago

Washington post didnt, they made an article defending the PS3 LOL read the article... i know cus i was the one who posted it Lol http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News...

"Also, CNN isn't anti-Sony, they are simply outsiders looking at a business and making a evaluation."

No but the reviewer in question was making his own tilted observations, no games, blueray needing a 50 inch TV etc.

CNN seemed like they are just trying to stir people opinion, one way over the other.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle40d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7749d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga48d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199248d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga48d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman48d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box49d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion48d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7248d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7548d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit48d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14948d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7748d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
