Wow, how low can we go. . .

I can see where publishers might extend this across all their games for the ones that don't have a game with the pull of GTA. For example, like for $6.00 a month you get exclusive/easy access to new monthly in game content and in game currency across all their titles as opposed to making a GP competitor or a EA Origin/Ubisoft+.

I don't like where we are headed. . . . . . . .

Eonjay1514d ago (Edited 1514d ago )

This is the future everyone wanted to act like they couldn't see coming. You really want 50 different subscriptions just to play games? I'm dying to see how this will result in anything other than consumers paying more. Even GP revealed that subscribers are now spending on average 50% more than those without GP. These corporations ony exist to get more money out of you. Not less.

VenomUK1514d ago (Edited 1514d ago )

I rarely do online gaming but I know some people love it most. There are games where people are happy to pay monthly for content such as Elder Scrolls Online, World of Warcraft, Fallout '76, Final Fantasy Online Fortnite etc or for extras such as Genshin Impact. GTA+ is optional so why are people automatically copying other people's narrative that THIS game's offer is evil and the other games are okay? On twitter some of the people complaining the loudest are the people who don't even play the game.

No GTA Online free player will be losing anything because of the introduction of GTA+, but there will now be an optional package for those that want it. GTA Online is a massive platform and these games take huge infrastructure and numbers of people to run well, it's not realistic for everything to be free. As with any game that you don't like what the publisher is doing vote with your wallet -as many will.

Xb1ps41514d ago

It's really not that deep. Many will try and most will fail. The market will not sustain with a bunch of subscriptions.

Gp has the biggest chance along with Sony if/when they do another sub. And steam clearly has a strong foot hold.

My biggest concern is sh!t like gt7, now that's a serious problem and it's 70$

philm871514d ago

@VENOMUK I completely agree. N4G seems to be full of people expecting everything for free. They're not going to keep on releasing content if they don't get income from it. Lots of people must enjoy GTA online and this gives them what looks like a better value way of enhancing their experience.

bloop1514d ago

@Venom: Yeah, sure, it's optional....... for now, until those perks eventually start leaning towards pay to win, which I'd bet everything I have that that's where this is heading towards.

@philm: I don't agree with the statement about expecting them to make new content for free. It's just had yet another generational release so that's new money coming in that could cover new content, and of course, let's not forget about the money that shark cards are printing for them too that more than covers anything they've added on.

The R* so many people loved is now officially dead and buried. Since the Housers jumped ship, the suits have taken over and all that's left is corporate greed.

This is bullshit in that it limits access to those without the subscription rather than just being an ongoing alternative for buying or more easily buying content absolutely everyone should have access to. No car, house, item, skin, or gameplay mode should be locked behind a subscription.

Not even most MMOs do that in that you can either pay for a subscription to auto unlock content or buy it individually. ESO, DCUO, SWtOR, even money grubbing Neverwinter allows you to individually buy content you want rather than rely on subscriptions.

This is a huge step backwards for consumers.

Petebloodyonion1514d ago

Have to agree with you there!

annoyedgamer1514d ago

Its been on his trajectory for years. I said this but got called names. The fact that nobody could see this speaks volumes about consumer intelligence.

Eonjay1514d ago (Edited 1514d ago )

And its not a Sony vs Microsoft thing. Its all of us gamers vs the industry. They use the rivalry to install these programs while masking their shared intentions. Everything that we say in objection to what Microsoft is doing can and should be pointed at Sony/EA/UBisoft/2K/Epic in the very same vein and vice versa. Just image what this is gonna look like in 10 years... 2K's NBA sub is coming 100% certain...

frostypants1514d ago

Thank the mouthbreathers who actually justify these schemes by opening their wallets.

Because it all started as horse armor instead of ability to achieve it via playing the game or cheat codes. Than it was it's cosmetic only defense, came next online $10 passes on used games, afterwards came no one is forcing you to play and it doesn't affect single player or my experience, Ubisoft joined the chat with their XP boosters or grind the heck out of the fetch quests and now a game has seen it's 3rd release and the game beat out elden ring in sales

If you don't see the problem and the progression of micro transactions affecting every gamer than soon enough they will end up in your favorite games and it will affect us all

Eonjay

Spend 50% more where because PlayStation is responsible for selling upwards of 70% of the 3rd party games. and the mindset issue of GP is gamers say many times why should I buy it when in 6-12 months it will end up on GP so until than I can play other games

Services make money because these companies know that everyone who signs up won't use the service. It's the same business model as gym membership whether at home or actual going to the gym. Most who sign up will use the service early on than forget about it but keep paying $10 because it's only $10 mindset and keep telling themselves I will start going soon

Surprised it took so long, I fully expect COD and Fortnite to do the same thing since they are so popular that the masses will easily except it.

KyRo1514d ago (Edited 1514d ago )

Fortnite does I believe? Don't quote me but Im sure one if my mates said he pays a sub for his kid.

Edit: It's called Fortnite Crew apprently

franwex1514d ago

Didn’t call of duty try this with Modern Warfare 3? I know they had a service that one could pay into before.

porkChop1514d ago

Call of Duty Elite. I don't remember exactly what it was for though.

philm871514d ago

CoD does the battlepass, which is effectively the same thing.

LG_Fox_Brazil1514d ago

This is another proof that there is a ton of people that will still hand over easy money for Rockstar in exchange for more and more of GTA Online. if I stopped playing it many years ago and you who are reading this also stopped, look no further than GTA+ to realize that there are still many players that are keeping it alive and financing it everyday

Snookies121514d ago (Edited 1514d ago )

The whole farm should be dry at this point, lol. How are people seriously still paying for this?

RPGer1514d ago

GTA5 ps3 was very blurry and inconsistent. They Released GTA5 on PS4 which was polished and stable and the online became even better. Now PS5 finally give 2014 PC level. *But you gonna pay it for it S...e* in sound of young Dave Chappelle .

PlayStation Store’s top downloads of 2025

O'Dell Harmon Jr. writes: "Before we say goodbye to 2025, let’s take a look back and see what were the most downloaded games of the year. It was a great time for sports, shooters, and some new PlayStation VR2 games. Sports favorites topped the charts in US/Canada and EU, with NBA 2K26 and EA Sports FC26, respectively.

Juggernaut GTA V found a home in the top three for both regions, with new 2025 release Battlefield 6 claiming second place in the US. Fortnite took top place for free-to-play games, and Beat Saber continues its PS VR2 success."

FH5 4th in Europe compared to North America 14th. Not surprising.

LucasRuinedChildhood123d ago

I think it shows how shortsighted it was for Sony to let go of Evolution and not get them to make some sort of competitor (open world Driveclub?) 10 years ago.

bionicstar122d ago (Edited 122d ago )

its a hard bet to make. hindsight is always 20/20.

Christopher122d ago

After Driveclub's reception, hard to say it would have done well enough to compete. It's easy to dream of such a thing, but to make it happen? It's taken how long for CoD to be dethroned? And it was dethroned by Hogwart's Legacy and has gained it right back just the next year.

It’s funny to watch the only games EU and USA agree on was Minecraft and back ops 7 both regions on 6 and 7 spot respectively other than that FIFA rules EU

gold_drake122d ago

yeh, football is really popular here in europe ha

I would like to see a list that has both free to play and paid games together, but at least we have this.

To this day GTA5 is a top downloaded game and it makes me wonder if the industry is really ready for GTA6. I imagine almost nothing else will sell during that game's release window.

I’ve never played Fortnite GTAV or CoD BO7 but I do own GTAV for PS4/5 because I got them cheap.

gold_drake131d ago

i think we should either take those games out, or make a singleplayer list too ha

badboyz09130d ago

I still play gta V alot. The others nah.

Popsicle130d ago

This is why we can’t have nice things.

Tacoboto130d ago

What exactly are we not getting?

Did we not just have a 2025 filled with nice games like...

Silksong, Doom TDA, Expedition 33, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Ghost of Yotei, Dispatch, Split Fiction, Hades 2, DK Bananza, and so many more?

Popsicle130d ago

Agree that all you just posted are great games. Expedition 33 is one of my favorites. Spent a large chunk of time on BG3 in 2023. Another for my all-time list.

My point though not well articulated in the OG post is that we would get more of the games of the quality you mentioned if so many valuable resources were not allocated to FTP slop and/or heavy monetization schemes. Some of what used to be my favorite franchises have been ruined by them.

To sum it up, I would like to see games like 33 outperform the profits made by games like Fortnite so more resources are allocated to great games. When heavily monetized FTP games are at the top of the list, we end up being stuck with a significant chunk of games that are not good. Or worst case scenario games that spend years in development, but get cancelled due to industry trend chasing.

cloganart130d ago

Such a pessimistic view. This year gave so many good games.

Christopher130d ago

Popsicle, I actually think we're getting more great games because of the slop. Developers are seeing that people aren't happy and taking advantage of big AAA studios not delivering for people.

Popsicle130d ago (Edited 130d ago )

Perhaps, and I hope you’re right. A shift is needed IMO
