Video game workers ask Microsoft if it will approve unionization

Microsoft says it will not object to Activision Blizzard recognizing internal unionization efforts, in response to a letter from Activision workers pressing the company to state its position about a potential union at Call of Duty studio Raven Software.

MadLad1506d ago

Glad to see that; but there's a big difference between what you say before you own a company, and what you did when you own a company.

Time will tell there.

Microsoft used to have a super toxic work culture and have worked very hard to change that. They've become one of the most employee-first companies in tech/software. So I'd say they've earned some trust in that regard.

MadLad1506d ago

My haters on this site drag me through the mud any time I bring it up, but I work as a union rep, so I feel it's relevant here.

I think Microsoft has done a lot to improve their image. I think they've done an entire 180 with their gaming division and are the most pro-consumer of the big 3.

But I don't trust anything large corporations say until it's in action.
I have seen companies publicly state the same, then do horrendous things in the background to make sure unionization never happens.
Until things actually go forward, I never see statements like these as anything but free, positive publicity.

Not sure why you're being downvoted for facts.

I think Microsoft understands that poor working conditions led to the whole situation that allowed them to purchase Activision in the first place. Allowing for unionization will cost them more money, but definitely benefits them in other ways. One, it's a great PR move to show that they're going to change the company. It also can help renew customer and employee faith in them. Two, if you want good talent, content employees and creativity, they need to be paid well and have security in their jobs. When you run a company cheaply and without empathy, we've all seen what happens. Employees leave, you get mismanagement, crunch, and in the end, you deliver shitty products. I'm hoping that they also understand all this.

MadLad1506d ago (Edited 1506d ago )

I just truly hope they hold to that statement, because everything you said is true.

Unions have a small turnover rate because they're usually handled well, and the workers are happy.
Many times the only reason a union handled business is hiring is if someone is retiring, or they are expanding.

blacktiger1506d ago

Dude you really don't know anything about corporation

anast1506d ago

Let's what happens. That thumbnail though. It's a line of straight jank. lol

Orchard1506d ago (Edited 1506d ago )

If it was jank people wouldn’t be begging for the games to stay cross-plat…

Nor would they be begging the federal government to block it…

anast1505d ago

None of this necessarily means it is not bottom barrel entertainment, save StarCraft. A ton of people support shows like "Honey BooBoo" and that show is (if it's still on) objectively jank. A popular meme is nothing near the quality of a Witkin painting and so forth. And the government and art...well...yeah, you can figure this one out. Popularity and quality are not mutually exclusive.

Orchard1505d ago (Edited 1505d ago )

Tens of millions of PS gamers would disagree with you, myself included, and COD is typically one of the better games of the year, every year.

frostypants1506d ago (Edited 1506d ago )

Not sure how these game dev unions work. Will they try to stand in the way of workers who want to negotiate their own compensation terms/promotion? Is it more just a workers rights union or do they try to bargain everything including pay and seniority rules?

S2Killinit1506d ago

Oh la la lets see where this one goes with MS.

Deathdeliverer1506d ago

Man unionization is something NO big company wants. If Microsoft allows a union in through activision it would be a Trojan horse for it to spread to other parts of the company. Man they have to get these guys to forget about this union talk and trust them, which I’m sure will be priority one. Once a union is in the people driving the business grows exponentially with their own agendas. Everyone not seeing eye to eye? Strike. Nobody’s agreeing on the distribution of funds for say health insurance? Strike. Business is at a halt until a deal is made. Pay scale is changing next year. You may make more… you may make less for the same job that you’ve been doing. (I used to work for the post office, happened to me) This has got to be one tremendous headache.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing11d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit11d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing11d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
