5 Things Elden Ring Doesn't Tell You

Elden Ring is a massive, complex game with a huge number of systems that aren't always clearly explained or obvious to the player.

Elden Ring doesn't tell you how crap the graphics are, and how inconsistent the framerate is. I'm playing on PS5 and although it is a fantastic game it's so badly optimised! Even when playing in Favour Resolution mode the game has this fuzzy, blurry appearance, and that framerate is just nasty. It's not much better in performance mode tbh.

Seems it's a problem with all versions of the game. I hope they can fix it. Great game, badly optimised

UltimateOwnage1524d ago

That sucks, man. I haven’t played the PS5 version yet, but I’ve been loving the PC version so far. I modded it for 21:9 support, and it runs excellent at 1440p. The souls games have always favored very sharp textures and used very high quality anisotropic texture filtering, and it seems like they run like crap as a result. Elden Ring is no exception it seems. I’m not holding out much hope for post-launch patches making many changes.

Chriswynnetbh1524d ago

How did you mod it for 21:9? Are you still able to play online without being banned?

BlackTar1871524d ago

Running fine on my ps5. I'm only sub lvl 50 but no issues for me.

Si-Fly1524d ago

I’m playing on PC and whilst I’m getting a few stutters I certainly wouldn’t describe the game as fuzzy or blurry. For a game based on a 7 year old graphics engine I think it looks great.

Smok911524d ago

Damn that sucks it’s running pretty smoothly on series x.

lucian2291524d ago

the frame rate can get a little eh, but the fun overrides those minor issues to me

MeatyUrologist1524d ago

I was curious about this as I keep seeing people raving about the visuals, but from the videos I've seen, it looks like a mid-life ps4 game at best. Graphics aren't everything, but I've seen HFW get dinged for pop in and minor graphics bugs while this is getting 10s everywhere with no mention of graphics or framerate.

robtion1524d ago

I'm playing Elden ring on PS5 (gameplay at 24hrs and lvl 38) and the graphics really are not good. Textures are generally terrible (trees are basically PS3 quality), frame-rate is inconsistent, pop in is rampant. Visually it is not even close to the Demon's Souls remake, it is hard to describe how big the difference is. In fact, I don't think it is even graphically as impressive as Bloodborne or Dark Souls 3.

Even the controls are not great. I have died a couple of times because of control glitches where inputs did not respond properly (changing weapons to shield or from staff to sword mid battle for example).

That said, the setting, art design, gameplay and environmental storytelling have that patented From Software magic so it is still well worthwhile despite the above issues. I really did expect better from the visuals though.

jznrpg1524d ago

It runs great on PS5 it sure as hell doesn’t look blurry . It’s a dated engine but for what they are using it looks beautiful . Its funny all of the complaints but this game runs better than any Souls game at launch before it from my experience . I’ve played them all from the beginning and this is very well done in comparison . There was a second patch on PS5 this morning I don’t know what it did but it is working great still . The one issue I have is rest mode but I always finish what I’m doing or go to a light to end the game anyway .

robtion1523d ago

Have you played the Demon's Souls remake (if not I highly recommend it)? The difference is night and day. I am enjoying Elden Ring just like the rest of the souls games but the graphics are a disappointment.

gammaray131524d ago

you are full of crap, the game is amazing the graphics are amazing and there are no issues what so ever on ps5, im at the end of the game and it looks amazing everywhere i go, you need glasses kid, oh and git gud

Binarycode1524d ago

Sounds like you have it setup incorrectly on your tv dude.

30fps mode is Native 4k on PS5.

Obviously the performance mode is less for 60fps, maybe you mean the Chromatic look.

I'm only playing this on an old gpu@1080p and although there are stutters when loading new area's the game looks good and runs fine most of the time.

Yes it could be better optimised.

But there is plenty of physics going on, tons of npc's particle fx all over the place. Rain/day night cycle type affair, decent looking water, and a decent draw distance. I love the lighting engine looks great. When your holding a torch it blows in the direction of the wind. Little details.

UnbreakableAlex1524d ago

It runs perfectly on my series X. I prefere the smooth fps mode.

MEGANE1523d ago

The votes on your comment just remind me of why I haven't comment in a few years, I just play the game for at least 12 hours and I encounter the same issues, the game is amazing, I love it, but the graphics ain't much better than DS3, if not worse considering the former is like 5 years old, and not to mention DS remake that simple makes ER looks really bad… I get it Open world bla bla bla etc, but bottom line to me only the loading times are giving me the next yen experience on PS5. This is why I want PS5 exclusives that aren't being held back by last gen or other consoles like the series s.

Great little article, no spoilers and basically the same questions I spent a lot of time trying to get answered.

Aussiesummer1524d ago

The game is severely poorly optimised, no reason why this game shouldn’t be just quality mode 60fps, still it’s fun and that’s king. Here’s hoping from soft get with it this gen and fix shit.

-Hermit-1523d ago (Edited 1523d ago )

I know what the reviewers didn't tell us, they didn't tell us how badly optimised it was and ignored it completely when handing the game a 10/10.

why is that dumb? It's the same price everywhere else.

repsahj22d ago

Because it's Nintendo. Post negative first before analizing.

LiViNgLeGaCY21d ago

Because this is the ONLY version you can buy on the S2, correct? I don't think you can buy just the game for $60 like the other platforms. And if I'm wrong about this, then I take it back.

LiViNgLeGaCY21d ago

@repsahj - Dude, shut up. I like Nintendo a lot, actually. I just want the option to get the base game for $60 WITHOUT the DLC. I've done plenty of "analyzing".

Neonridr22d ago

Before anyone complains, this is the same price on PlayStation, Xbox and Steam. It comes with the Game and the DLC.

Elda22d ago

The game is $40 & the expansion is $40 so the price is right.

VersusDMC22d ago

The standard edition physical should have been 40 then with the expansion seperate. Why normalize 80 dollar games? Specially ports of old games.

If people accept this might as well make physical 80 dollar deluxe versions only.

repsahj22d ago

This $80 version is also available on PS5 and XSX.

VersusDMC21d ago

@repsahj

The ps5 has the standard version and the 80$ version so it gives you the choice...on switch 2 physical you can only buy the 80 dollar version.

I guess since they got the data that less than half of elden ring players beat the game and would probably not buy the DLC, they decided to just not make it an option and charge more...

GotGame81821d ago

Like it or not, the vast majority of game sales are digital. Just like movies, and music. At least Gamekey cards are shareable and you can sell them.
