How do I turn off those messages and ghosts from other players? They are so annoying!
I tried ignoring them, but they are bright and all over the place. And when you get near one, a big "Press Y to read the message" pops up on the screen.
I will seriously consider refunding the game if it can't be turned off.

If you're playing on a console, you'll need to log out of either xbox live or PS Network to play offline. If you're playing on steam, you'll need to open steam in offline mode. There's no way to disable them from the options settings atm.

However, I highly suggest you don't play offline. There are benefits to laying down your own messages, which I don't want to spoil. Also, once you get out of the starting area, they definitely become quite helpful. In the beginning, they're mostly old jokes from previous Souls games (if you're not familiar), such as "attack hidden wall" or "treasure ahead" and it's a sheer cliff, which you definitely will fall to your death.

Also, please don't quit because of some messages that other players leave. The game is so freakin' awesome. It would be shame to see another tarnished fade into obscurity.

On PC, I managed to turn if off by going in the main menu in-game and saying I want to play in offline mode (although it only works after you restart the game). Fortunately I found it before I completed 2 hours of gameplay, so I didn't refund the game.
Yes, I know you get healed when people like your messages. However, 1 - it feels like cheating. 2 - it's very immersion breaking. 3 - it's still not worth it for me to see all those useless shining stuff scattered on the floor.

And just ranting a little bit, it does make me like Souls games (including this one) even less when they put "traps" (like enemies hidden in the corner of a room which you can't see before you enter it and get deadly ambushed) which you can only learn by dying for it once, or having to rely on other players warning you about it. These games rely too much on "surprise, mother******" traps. I'm more fan of Megaman's difficulty style, which you have tight controls and you know exactly what should be done and the challenge is actually doing it, instead of being killed by random stuff you had no way of knowing they would appear.

Just to add a few more tips for newcomers:
1. Learn the controls and practice against easy enemies. This game tells you practically nothing in the beginning of the game, unlike past Souls games, so I'd suggest looking up any dark souls controls tutorial. You can Parry attacks, backstab (get behind the enemy), sneak attack (crouch and attack from behind using R1 or RB), headshot with a bow..etc. Those are the basics, but yeah, there's a ton you can do, depending on your character build.

2. Talk to every npc multiple times until they have nothing else to say, and listen carefully.

3. It's okay to run past enemies. You don't have to fight every single one. If you do decide to fight them, try to spot the big dog first, avoid that one as much as possible, and take out the others first, so you're dealing with a much more fair fight.

4. When going into a new area, take it slow and learn the enemies, routes, etc. If the environment is winding, or confusing in any way to travers, lay down some guiding stones so you can see your way back. Also, buy a torch. You're welcome.

5. Don't be afraid to experiment with different weapons and armors. If you're struggling with a specific enemy, try something new before you decide to run off to another area. Maybe the problem isn't your level, but rather, the equipment your using.

6. Have a notebook handy so you can take notes. There's a lot of random stuff you're going to encounter through your journey, and trust me when I say, my notebook came in handy multiple times. The game is insanely big and it's easy to forget something cool you saw, but didn't get a chance to stop and take a look. Or, wanted to come back to an area and completely forgot about it...lol.

7. If you're truly stuck, summon a fellow player to help you out. It's not a guarantee you're going to beat the boss, but at the very least, you'll have more time to heal up/use items if you need to.

why is that dumb? It's the same price everywhere else.

repsahj31d ago

Because it's Nintendo. Post negative first before analizing.

LiViNgLeGaCY30d ago

Because this is the ONLY version you can buy on the S2, correct? I don't think you can buy just the game for $60 like the other platforms. And if I'm wrong about this, then I take it back.

LiViNgLeGaCY30d ago

@repsahj - Dude, shut up. I like Nintendo a lot, actually. I just want the option to get the base game for $60 WITHOUT the DLC. I've done plenty of "analyzing".

Neonridr31d ago

Before anyone complains, this is the same price on PlayStation, Xbox and Steam. It comes with the Game and the DLC.

Elda31d ago

The game is $40 & the expansion is $40 so the price is right.

VersusDMC31d ago

The standard edition physical should have been 40 then with the expansion seperate. Why normalize 80 dollar games? Specially ports of old games.

If people accept this might as well make physical 80 dollar deluxe versions only.

repsahj31d ago

This $80 version is also available on PS5 and XSX.

VersusDMC30d ago

@repsahj

The ps5 has the standard version and the 80$ version so it gives you the choice...on switch 2 physical you can only buy the 80 dollar version.

I guess since they got the data that less than half of elden ring players beat the game and would probably not buy the DLC, they decided to just not make it an option and charge more...

Like it or not, the vast majority of game sales are digital. Just like movies, and music. At least Gamekey cards are shareable and you can sell them.
