A Statement On Martha Is Dead

Martha Is Dead is a narrative adventure recommended for adult audiences only, with play consisting of potentially discomforting scenes and themes that may distress some players. Both Wired Productions and LKA have always been open and honest about Martha Is Dead content, with the sensitive depictions in play consistently communicated to the media since the game was announced in 2019. This content is also flagged clearly and repeatedly within the game itself before play begins. It is with regret that we have had to modify the experience on the PS5 and PS4 versions, with some elements no longer playable.

And just like that my plans to buy this on Playstation have died also.

Maybe I'll give it a shot on Xbox instead

-Foxtrot1562d ago

Yeah I would do that, don't bother giving the PS version a sale if Sony is going to do this

I just don't get how you can allow the unedited version on Xbox / PC yet the PS versions are a big no no

It's a small thing sure, but if people allow things like this to pass it means they'll just become worse in the future.

monkey6021562d ago

Yeah I dont get it. If other platforms are allowing it then surely the content is not that big a deal

gamer78041562d ago

Sony used to be like Nintendo. But since moving their hq to California they like to police content more it’s annoying it used to be my goto for Japanese games and now it’s Nintendo. Will do Xbox for this. I don’t like to support censorship.

KrillinShine1562d ago

@gamer, Xbox cannot be relied upon on this topic either: https://gamerant.com/gal-gu... Nintendo has surprisingly been decent recently, with two exceptions being in Smash that I can recall (G&W and Mythra/Pyra). PC gonna PC, so they're fine too.

Bathory6661562d ago

It’s been like this for awhile. Free speech, censorship etc. Sony doesn’t want the bad press.

CobraKai1561d ago

@Bathory
They’ll be getting a bad rapport instead. I don’t care enough of the game to be upset, but their ever increasing censorship is very disheartening. They didn’t even censor Cyberpunk what with its violence, giant dongs, and exposed boobs. I don’t get it.

MadLad1561d ago (Edited 1561d ago )

@krillin

You mean the glorified pedo game that also didn't arrive on Playstation, and featured gameplay elements allowing you to look up highschool girl's skirts?

I know. How dare Microsoft not promote pedophilia.

annoyedgamer1562d ago

PC if you can, Microsoft will one day start doing this as well.

Gamer751562d ago

But they aren't doing it so deflect all you want but it's not going to change anything

coolbeans1561d ago

But if they're not doing it in this instance, why isn't the Xbox version a valid option?

MadLad1561d ago (Edited 1561d ago )

Yet they haven't.
Sony is in current day.

So we can suggest Microsoft MAY do something similar in the future, but they haven't done anything to make me assume they would, as we observe Sony legitimately doing it on multiple occasions.

So your not buying the playstation version because you can't play the mini game which lets you cut a babies face off and use it as a mask?
I'm all for non censorship and creative freedom but cmon I think this one is a little over the top ?

monkey6021561d ago

Is that actually what's missing ? Or is that facetious?

I generally don't like supporting censorship. It should be up to the individual if they want to see something or not, within reason I guess. Don't put it on daytime TV for instance

monkey6021561d ago

I've just seen the scene in question. It's not a baby dude. I dont think I could have watched that to be honest. Not as a father of a toddler anyway

Tedakin1561d ago

Yes. I would not buy the PS version if I had other options. I want to play the game the way the designer intended, not the way Sony forced them to release it. If you have an issue with a gory scene you should probably skip the game altogether.

Atom6661561d ago

Sorry, but some of us don't need corporations to tell us what's "over the top." It's rated Mature for a reason.

So even if it was a baby's face (it's not...that's just what the Sony defenders want to parrot), who the hell wants a corporation to decide it's too much for them to view?

Sony is shooting themselves in the foot with this whole censoring crap. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this why the rating system is in place? What is the point of it, if Sony is pressure/force certain devs to censor their games anyway?

gamer78041562d ago

California HQ is the reason… This could be such a win for Any platform holder if they would just let the ESRB work.

Kombatologist1562d ago

California has nothing to do with it. Stop spreading BS.

Tedakin1562d ago

How come the Xbox version is unaffected?

gamer78041561d ago

@kombatologist. Do your research , it was revealed by devs that Japanese games had to go through extra certifications in California regarding content censorship which not only was a detriment to the game but increased delays in publishing.

gamer78041561d ago

@tekadin since Sony moved their hq to California they implemented new “safety/censorship” rules. Xbox is a bit more relaxed. Somewhere in between Sony and Nintendo depending on the instance and what it is.

Atticus_finch1561d ago (Edited 1561d ago )

It's probably more of an internal decision by Sony.

CrimsonWing691562d ago

Yep, Sony is basically doing the equivalent of taking out nudity from an R rated movie. Like that’s sh*t cable television does, the whole point of the rating system is to allow content and restrict it to an age appropriate audience.

tbagmonster1561d ago

especially when we are paying for the game, we want all the content

VenomUK1561d ago

As long as the content is properly labelled adults can make an informed choice. This is a boneheaded move.

@gamingtext

Stupid parents.

"Hey! This game looks good, and my child is screaming to play this. I'll buy it to shut them up."

*some time later*

"I'm gonna rant and rave about X game I bought for my 12 year old because..." When the game clearly says M17 or has warnings all over the game. But blame the media/medium and not people who can't spend the extra 10 seconds to read the content warnings.

SullysCigar1561d ago (Edited 1561d ago )

100% this. Ratings exist for a reason. If its really that bad, make a new category and ship it as is. That way, people go in informed, fully aware that this is the equivalent of the 'video nasties' of the old days.

Plaster a warning banner across the box if you must, but let adults be responsible for the content they consume.

If the ratings board are comfortable for this to exist in the country of purchase, the platform holder - whether it's their right to do so or not - shouldn't dictate what is or isn't inappropriate for their audience. There are people literally employed to cover that industry-wide.

Orchard1562d ago

Is it really that much worse than other content we have on PS today?

gamingtext20201562d ago

You can watch the scene on YT right now and the possible scene in question is where you control the character cutting the face off his dead sister/random woman. It is gruesome, but we’ve see far worst in past games and besides it’s a M rating game.

Sony does not need to add any additional regulations on top of the regulations that ERSB already set place.

P_Bomb1562d ago (Edited 1562d ago )

Indeed, we already have the ESRB. Why split multiplatform content? Just slap on a disclaimer

Eonjay1561d ago

Lets be fair, we can see why they questioned the content. Thats pretty sick. But I still contend that Sony's own game 'TLoU Part 2' is by far and a way the most violent game ever made. So who is making these decisions? And does a game have to have full on sex to get an AO rating?

Censorship, gotta love it.

Careful now rlow1, you might hurt someone's feeling by saying that.

Everything is offensive to someone and you gotta love how something is bad but not other things when used in a different context.
