Is Sony's PS3 Really a Sinking Ship?

CNN has declared Sony's PS3 "a sinking ship" riffing off last Thursday's "plummeting" NPD sales results. CNN bases its gloomy diagnosis on Sony's sales plunge of 19 points, compared to sales in November 2007....

For the final time everybody the PS3 is NOT failing, CNN are on anti-PS3 patrol overtime recently, it is called a recession or a downturn in the economy, the PS3 is not failing get over it CNN.

It is nice to know that at least this guy writing the article is not a fanboy like most other video game journalists.

Pizzagaki6377d ago

Even Pizzagaki's Sigma could not float the ps3.

darkequitus6377d ago (Edited 6377d ago )

If the mainstream media keep spouting off the rubbish, the uneducated may start to believe it and won't the PS3 with a barge poll. The same as all these lemmings keep buying that shovelware magnet, the Wii. LOL! I was one of those idiots that bought into the con, if only for a few weeks.

PS3 does need a price cut now, considering you can pick up a sony branded Blu-ray for £160 or cheaper brands for £140 if you look aound

darkequitus6377d ago

CNN = Time Warner
CNBC = NBC + Microsoft

darkequitus:psn/xbl

ultimolu6377d ago (Edited 6377d ago )

Sony drops the price and then the journalists would then imply that Sony did a desperate pricecut because they were getting their asses whooped...-__-

EDIT: I do agree that was an odd move but my uncle wants that bundle. He just wants the price to go down a bit.

I think the pricecut will come soon enough.

darkequitus6377d ago

Then they have lost then? They can't win whatver they do.

The big mistake was to go the value route and bump up the HDD to 160 and increase the price. What was wrong with a 60 gig version?

xwabbit6377d ago

You do know they have a partnership right ? M$ and Time Warner

6377d ago
ultimolu6377d ago

Pretty sure he owns two consoles. He doesn't sound like a fanboy to me.

darkequitus6377d ago (Edited 6377d ago )

A PS3 elitist who has owned every console since the VCS (including the turkeys) and spends 70% on the xbox 27% on a PC and the rest on the PS3. Get your facts straight. Compared the the PS3 and 360 the favour is heavey tipped to shovelware for the wii. I support the 360 and PS3 by putting money where my mouth is and buy the exclusives.
The Wii was the only console I never kept to the end. Better use with my nieces

You abviously do not get what I am saying. I am making the point about people buying in media hype good or bad. I even admitted I did. How many people do you think bought the Wii with an informed decision. All those parents, I can name 25+ where I work. That had to get a wii when it came out. They had not a clue but was willing pay over the odd for mine. Why? They could not answer.

I am on my high horse like everone else on this when someone else does not agree. As I said , I was one of those lemmings.

@Xwabbit a partnership is not the same a ownage. They colaborated in digital distribution after the litigation with AOL Time warner.

Any doubt 'darkequitus' is my PSN and XBL tag

rockleex6377d ago

Yea you're right, no one could possibly NOT like their Wii. -_-"

You have to realize that not everyone loves and defends their Wii to death like you.

The majority of gamers have a Wii, and a LOT of non-gamers have a Wii.

What's the general consensus? It stops getting used after a few weeks.

Its great if the same can not be said of you, but you have your own tastes and opinion.

The rest of us just get a LOT more fun and enjoyment from our PS3's and 360's.

TheTwelve6377d ago

...is a very biased one for one of a couple of reasons:

1. He's paid by an enemy of Sony

or

2. He's had a bad Sony experience.

His assumptions about the PS3 are extremely near sighted and based on any kind of time, either in the past or the future.

All of the people who jump on the bandwagon with him are equally near-sighted and have no credibility.

The Wii is so popular because EVERY kid wants one! Same reason that the Nintendo DS continues selling like HotCakes every single year. And you know what, it's gonna continue selling no matter what us hardcore gamers say because honestly, KIDS are looking for something different then we are....no matter how much we disagee with them. You have to understand that to understand the marketing trends.

That leaves the 360 and PS3 fighting for the other 40% of the market...us!! We're the one's who care about the details...not them.

For this reason, you also see why LBP was a sales flop. No matter what you think, LBP was made and marketed to the mass market. Problem is, the PS3 does not have a mass market crowd. It's pretty much all hardcore gamers. I mean, how many parents you know would buy a there kid a $400 system?!

And also, know that Sony's market is shrinking with every system being sold. The PS2 was what the Wii is this generation...the mass markets console of choice. Now, even if Sony does lower there price, don't expect there sales numbers to be even close to the PS2's because those consumers aren't there no more! It's all commen sense economics my friends!

Aquanox6377d ago

I can't believe this guy in the article brought the "Playstation Brand" to the table. Makes me remind the crazy folks at SonyDefenseForce (laughable website) and their "Sony Family" (PSP + PS2 + PS3) vs Xbox.

You have to measure things compared to their competitive market. The PSP isn't competing with the Xbox 360, it's competing with the DS and its getting its arse royaly kicked.

Now the PS3's competition is the Xbox, and probably the PS2 is going for a similar market, yet its existence is fading each month. Even though, the Xbox 360 has outsolf both the PS3 and PS2 combined so talking about the "Playstation Family" being healthy in the industry is a total nonsense... mainly if you're talking about USA numbers.

jadenkorri6377d ago

they would prob buy a 360 cause of all these stupid articles against ps3...Ive never seen so much hate towards a console and so many people at the ready to bash a console. Ps3 is standing on its own, while 360 keeps lowering the price... Ps3 out sold the 360 for 10 months, which apparently didn't matter, 2 months of good sales (with a price drop mind you) apparently puts the 360 back on top.

PS: what i eman is there uneducated about a console and do research

rockleex6377d ago

The few places where you will find unbiased articles about the video game industry.

rockleex6377d ago

Riiight... because the PS3 has outsold the 360 worldwide so far this year.

So if you just add the PS2's sales with the PS3 and they'd easily move ahead of the 360 even further.

But of course, to you, the rest of the world doesn't exist... only NA.

Armyless6377d ago

(yawn)

Nobody buys your crap... I just read through your comment history and all you do is bash the PS3 and LBP.

gaminoz6377d ago

Actually, the article author made a point I hadn't really thought of about the PS2 sales helping them financially. I'd love to know how much profit it still brings them. But is the PS2 taking sales away from the PS3 too, because it is too expensive for gamers? I'm not sure.

"On the other hand, CNN's whacking the nail on the head when it raises the problem of the PlayStation 3's price."

This is the crux. Lower the price and PS3 will do very well imo. But maybe they can't afford to, even with a recession making it harder for them to sell.

I look forward to seeing figures for the end of this year and early next year. If there still is a drop, they need to do something, as the next period is slow.

Yet another PS3 is failing article from people that have no idea what the hell they are talking about. What happened to responsible journalism in which you actually research the subject you are talking about?

Johnny Rotten6377d ago (Edited 6377d ago )

Yet another gamer who doesn't read articles but would rather make up comments from looking at the headline.

edit: I know what you mean though.

VampHuntD6377d ago

I normally read the article before Comment, but this weekend was nothing more than Bash PS3 weekend so I assumed it was more of the same.

Even with a title like that though, it's not going to seem like much more than flamebait.

gaminoz6377d ago

Yeah you really need to read first. This was a positive outlook for Sony.

Yeah you get sick of the doom and gloom stuff all at once, but the same happens when there's bad news for 360. Tons of articles come out doing the same about Microsoft.

Then the fan-wars start: everybody trying to justify their choice in console. Of course some of us are lucky enough to have both! :)

gaminoz6377d ago

Oh...and keep in mind, journalists have to get attention for people to read their stuff so titles are always as dramatic or sensationalist as possible.

People just need to realise that then see what the content actually is.

xbo 360 was failing badly getting outsold by ps3 for a few months overall in 2008 world wide ps3 has outsold xbox 360 and there was a few articles like this about the 360 like:

http://play.tm/news/22027/p...

http://www.gamepro.com/arti...

http://www.engadget.com/200...

http://techreport.com/discu...

and you have to note the date of these articles ALL are before the price cut. so someone explain how is the ps3 a sinking ship just because it got outsold 2 months in a row because of an xbox 360 price cut ..............................

shadowghost7526377d ago

It is because lots of game journalists are actually xbox fanboys who will take any chance to bash the PS3

ultimolu6377d ago

There's no hatred in this post. This article actually refutes what was said concerning CNN's comments towards the PS3.

Pretty good argument.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle33d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7742d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga42d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199241d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga41d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman41d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box42d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion41d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7242d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7541d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit41d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14942d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7742d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
