@Obz one of those isn't out for at least a few years. One is Call Of Duty which so far there's been no inclination it'll only be on Xbox (quite the opposite in fact) and Starfield which is a brand new IP. How often do brand new IPs get people to switch over in droves.

I somewhat disagree. Sure, you'll get exclusives both have to offer, but the vast majority of content is shared. One plays them extremely well, one does not; one has game pass, the other does not.

I think you can choose one and be quite fine. It's actually a surprise Nintendo doesn't sell the most hardware because they have the best complementary hardware in my view: Playstation and Switch, Xbox and Switch, or even PC and Switch are typical and make more sense than Series S and PS5.

Again though, it really depends on what you're after.

Keep in mind the majority of sales used to come with playstation...when you remove them who knows how much it will sell. Either playstation owners adopt into the gamepass thing or they dont...and if they dont...well those sales numbers are gonna see a dramatic decrease.

You think...that a multiplatform franchise that was synonymous with Xbox during the 360 era, the longest generation with the highest CoD output and acclaim on said platform —when the "good" COD games (whatever that even means anymore)— is... Sony had some serious missteps with PS3, but to say that PS3's comeback was due to Microsoft's pulling back is birdbrained.

Lad... The Xbox 360 had a YEAR headstart. Developers had their hands on the console for a whole year. Games came out looking better for a while. They had a ton of timed exclusives. You had people buying multiple X360s because the failure rate was abysmal. It was $200 cheaper than PS3—literally, for $50 more, you could have an Xbox 360 AND Wii, which was super easy to jailbreak as a bonus. Sony's network was terrible with awful connection and was literally down for a goddamn month. The stars were aligned for Xbox to blow Playstation out of the water and they STILL. LOST. You don't get to say it's because MS stopped caring. Sony was notoriously bad for a while. It really was Microsoft's generation to lose, and they did. If the Xbox was handedly beating PS3, they should have been miles ahead, even as Xbox "stopped caring". You clearly don't remember that generation very well.

For fun, let's reframe your silliness: "Xbox 360 only lost because Sony was more focused on their current system at the time! Sure, PS3 was killing it outside of the US in hardware sales, but let's not talk about that because it doesn't constitute my idea of 'when it mattered'".

Microsoft used millions of Series X consoles/blades to update the Xcloud streaming service. That took a ton of consoles out of market. Plus, you can now play next gen versions of the games that are Game Pass from your OG Xbox One, tablet, mobile phone, and PC. The ecosystem is huge.

Because the average consumer spends hundreds of dollars to play games, just to spend hundreds of dollars to play games.

Its existence contributed to a 2:1 instal base in favor of PS4. It will do the same for PS5 (probably more so because they have that much more experience with VR now, and the hardware is that much more capable). Personally, VR, and PSVR2 are most exciting thing happening in gaming for me. I'm Sure there are tons of people like me out there.

PS4 sold as well as it did to the Xbox One because the Xbox One sucked until the release of the One X, which is when Microsoft really stepped up their game in multiple departments.

PS3 and 360 were neck and neck just one generation before. Fanboys need to stop acting like Xbox is still at its low point. It's most definitely at its highest, and is real competition again.

not sure what you mean. Gamepass number is for all xboxes? Also, it takes away from game sales of those games that are available on xbox. The number of consoles sold is directly proportional to how much is generated in sales of whatever it is the console maker is selling, be it games or services or peripheral hardware, or whatever else. Playstation sells more units, thus more sales of everything else.

You. You won’t need a Series X to play CoD, Starfield or ES6. You’ll be able to play them on PC, Xbox One, Tablet, Browser and Mobile. Obviously the latter ones on streaming.

It’s kind of Microsoft’s selling point. They don’t care about beating Sony in the console sales. They just want monthly subscribers to their ecosystem.

Sony will continue to have system sellers. Microsoft will have ecosystem sellers. Which is also another reason why Sony will probably maintain a big lead in system sales. It’s not a negative at all. It’s just a fact of their business models.

Not that it really matters anyway for Sony vs Microsoft - we can already see that Microsoft are playing a completely different game from traditional hardware unit numbers and are lining up to fight against companies far bigger than Sony.

I do agree with them that the Activision purchase won’t impact sales this year - that deal won’t even be closed this year - and we still don’t know what it means for Activision games on other platforms.

way too many down votes on this. its just simple math. the Switch has proven to be a real wild card and with a solid library of exclusives and a lower price point I don't see how anyone would disagree. I swear its like people think MS dropping 77 billion dollars on these acquisitions and "journos" writing articles is somehow going to sell consoles. Its not, games sell consoles, and Xbox is still repairing its image after XB1. There are massive shifts in mindshare that need to occur for Xbox to over take PlayStation this gen, never mind out selling Nintendo

It will take probably 2 years to get CoD exclusive. With all the back alley deals Activision has been doing they probably have some agreements to honor with Sony.

Phil Spencer recently said that sales of the Xbox Series has beaten the Xbox One plus its also beaten their previous best selling console the Xbox 360. Its estimated that Xbox Series Consoles are already over 12M. PlayStation is between 15 & 17M.

I'm just going by the Forbes article & replying to the figure of 10M given by cbuc above...
Even if Spencer isn’t supplying numbers, Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad says that based on past Xbox One and Xbox 360 year one numbers (~12 million and 10.4 million respectively), that means Spencer is saying that Xbox Series X and S have shipped at least 12 million units. Though how many above that is unclear.
Xbox Series could be on 13 million as far as we know but as usual on N4G the lowest estimated number for the Xbox Series is given & the Highest estimated PS5 number is given...

Microsoft gaming division can’t seriously hope to really compete with Sony if Xbox can’t attain as strong a GLOBAL presence as PlayStation.

I think games like Halo and Forza were plenty reason to own an xbox already, and that's without including the huge availability of titles on gamepass. I'm fortunate to own a ps5 and a series x, and I'm getting plenty of good games for both in 2022. I've owned every playstation console, several nintendo consoles, and the 360 and series x from microsoft. I love games. It's silly to put down what nintendo or microsoft has to offer just because you don't have those systems. All these companies have their strengths and weaknesses.

Sony has been my go to for every generation, with the ps2 being my all time favorite console. But I think gamers have to admit the changes and moves Microsoft is making in gaming right now is very, very historic and monumental for the industry. We'll see where it all leads but if the Activision/Blizzard deal goes through they will have 30 in house dev teams. That is preposterous. They could have heavy hitting studios launching titles every year in the years to come, on a regular release schedule, one after the other, with perhaps two months between each big game release. That would be a big win for them, and as long as gamepass pricing doesn't go through the roof, a big win for xbox and pc gamers also.

The quality of games on Gamepass is definitely subjective. I think it's great for folks that love classic XB exclusives including for saving money but far as a variety of current XB exclusives & AAA multi-plats Gamepass is lacking in that dept. I think Gamepass is average at best.

I think you have a very specific idea of need here because those same old IP are not a reason even if they're good. 2 titles shouldnt be anyones reason to get a console.

For Halo you gotta love the multiplayer otherwise its mediocre. For Forza you gotta love car games other wise its a short nice time.

I agree with you, but I also know that even if Starfield (or any other MS first party) doesn't deliver I will at least try it because of gamepass. That goes for every first party game they will release. That is a big value to me. Hard to argue otherwise.

I still love my Sony first party games and as long as they keep delivering I will always love them....they have been the best games of every generation (to me personally) going back all the way to the ps1. But having said that, I don't buy every playstation exclusive. Not even close. There are day one buys (example Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnorok) but there are many where I take a wait and see approach...see how they review then decide whether to buy. That isn't a factor at all with gamepass as I already pay for the service so I try out many more games I would never, ever buy. I enjoy a good number of them.

imo buying any console for unannounced potential games is foolish. the size of these acquisitions is not debatable, the end results of what they will produce is. MS owns Gears and Halo still... without Bungie and the original Epic team behind those IP the games have not been the same, Id say Infinite is the first good Halo 343 has put out. These purchases have the potential to produce big hits but as of right now its just hype.

Buy whichever consoles you will get the most enjoyment from or can afford.

Ideally if ur a real gamer u will own all 3 or 2 atleast.

Id like to think most people dont own more than one due to budget reasons but if its simply because u have a preference for then ur only denying urself more good games.

This is a great gen to be a multi console owner, dont miss out due to dumb fanboy loyalty or play the fanboy to hide the fact u cant afford them all so need to drag the others down to feel better about ur purchase.

I hope everyone sells a ton to keep this competition going so we all win and get different experiences from each console maker

There are some folks that own more than one console because they have interest in the exclusives that release on those consoles. Personally for me I can afford all three consoles but I don't because for the past 5 generations of PS consoles PS provided exclusives that held my interest where XB & Nintendo exclusives didn't. I finally own an XB console the XBSS from winning at a Xmas party which I kept out of curiosity. I don't really use it much & when I do it's to play Halo Infinite which is only in 1080p so it doesn't look that great & I play a couple of indie titles. My PS5 is played almost every day because the PS exclusives & AAA multi-plats look better running on the PS5 than the XBSS. The bottom line for me it's all about preference.

Ive read some of your other comments about the clarity/quality of your SS. Maybe its your tv? It looks great on my Samsung oled. Especially when using HDR enabled games. I have mine set to 4k and be it streaming or playing games (like halo & forza) it looks fantastic.

I use the same set for my PS5 and it too looks great. Every persons mileage may vary but I can only speak about my experience.

Of course it doesn't. It can't run at higher rez. It's not next Gen. No setting in any TV will change that fact. It's normal to be dynamic 1080p... Of course that kids 10 or 12 don't care... But it's not a machine for hardcore gamers that want the next Gen experience.

Sure, sales aren't going to make or break my experience while playing an excellent game on one of my systems of choice. I play games, not stocks. However, there are consequences to how well a system does. Devs and publishers are far more likely to want to put their games on a system that sells well, because that tells them how big their potential customer base is on that system.

There's more to the picture than that, of course, but sales are a good thing for your favourite system. To be fair, no major system that is out right now can be considered a failure, which is great no matter what your preference is. However, to say that sales don't matter is to ignore the benefits that sales bring. Of course we all want our favourite systems to do well, because we want as many games to be released on them as possible.

No, ideally if youre a real gamer you just play the games you like. You dont need all 3 consoles. In some scenarios only 2 and thats if you like nintendo games. Otherwise all you need is a gaming laptop and playstation.

And as a smart gamer you can just wait to get your moneys worth gamepass until there are at least 5-10 games on it you wanna play and subscribe...then cancel until theres more again. Series S is the easiest access for that but ...I know some people who will wait about half of the generation before pciking a series s playing all the games on it that are exclusive and then trading it back.

You can get them if you really want it. Its a bit of a hassle but its doable. I only started trying around July of last year. Got 3 through gamestop.

Xbox has made big moves in the last 12 months but PlayStation still has the upper hand in mindshare and good will towards the brand, this is globally not just in one region either. The things MS are investing in are chipping away at that but not fast enough to be the market leader in the next 12 months, thats how I see it. I personally play my Series X more then my PS5 for a number of reasons but I also own more games for PS5 then XSX. Right now Bethesda and the Acti/Bliz purchases are HUGE news to stoke fanboy flame wars but thats all they are. They are deals that have not bore momentum shifting fruit yet, that is more of a slow burn. No one is going to pick XSX over PS5 because of these purchases, not until exclusive games show up.

I dont think this gen will be about picking one over another. Not like last gen at least. I think this gen will be about covering bases. I can see many picking a primary but then also getting a sidekick system.

A SS makes a great (and cheap) entry point for many who ignored the xbo last time. I have it sitting next to my PS5. Its definitely been a good combo for my casual play.

You keep Hyping the s... Dude the s is the worst option possible. It's not next Gen. It can't even run one x upgrades. It got the worst versions of all games. The diference for the X is gen... It will only get worse. If gamers can't get an X wait... And only want a Microsoft console the best option is to wait. Beside the cheap aspect is a big fat lie. It cost 299 but it only got 364 gigas of space that's nothing... It's just stupid. The moment you buy the ssd expansion it's become very expensive for what it is... The X is the reason to own an Microsoft console. A true next Gen console.

I get what you are saying & it's evident it works for you but I have the same setup & I have to say when it comes to current AAA multi-plats including the new Halo...the games don't look that great running on the Series S compared to the Series X or the PS5. For me..Gamepass has saved me a few dollars from buying some indie titles that are on PS5 but are on Gamepass & of course the indie games look great on the XBSS because they're not AAA games. I personally think the Gamepass library is just average at best. To each their own.

If PS can drop off from 155m to 87m and the rebound... so can XB. Gamer habits are not an exact science. They change every gen.

That might be tough if Gamepass keeps putting out games that are Day and date releases between 1st and 3rd party deals. The Series S more available as well. More then the XSX and the PS5.

That and there isn't enough hardware available from Sony right now.

Maybe consoles. But I bet the Xbox division makes more than the PlayStation division. Xbox's ecosystem is bigger than a plastic box. I doubt they use console sales as a determinating number for the success of either company for much longer.

Sounds like a wishful comment when Microsoft's purchases will have no immediate effect.

Without a doubt, no matter how much money Microsoft throw about. It won't stop the Sony juggernaut, look at this way if wasn't for the bottomless pockets Microsoft have the Xbox brand would of been dead from original xbox. No other company could take commercial failures like they have. The RROD would of finished most.

Rr0d finished me off. 3 consoles later. game data lost.. lan parties crashing. Total nightmare. About 4 friends I know also went through between 2-4 consoles. Happy with playstation performance.

Now the controllers bigger and more comfortable too which was a problem for USA gamers in the past.. that being. The old playstation controllers were too small.. overall... It's a good time for ps fans.
