Halo Infinite campaign: every console version tested

DF: "Every Xbox console tested with 343 Industries' long-awaited Halo sequel. Open world gameplay defines Infinite, on an engine that scales impressively to all consoles old and new. Xbox One gets the first billing in this analysis as we test original 2013 hardware - where a dynamic 1080p and 30fps cap are respectably held, if let down by uneven frame-pacing. How does Xbox One X, Series S and X augment this experience? Are frame-rates successfully locked at 60fps on more powerful consoles? And what of loading times? Tom runs through every version, every mode, to get you the answers in this breakdown."

I have this preloaded on both my Series S and one X. Hell... I might even play it on my Halo Xbox One [VCR] just for kicks.

franwex1615d ago

I’m playing on the og xbone. Not by choice :/

XBManiac1615d ago

You can play cloud version on your og Xbox One... try it.

InUrFoxHole1615d ago

Dude im super pissed. It says it's downloaded. I just go to start the game and it says you need to download the full game. The snails pace at which it's downloading makes me want tovpunch Phil Spencer in his throat. It's a $500 console and we still can't get downloads correct

InUrFoxHole1615d ago

Ok rant was only a 13 min delay. My bad phil

Yppupdam1615d ago

All I can see in my head is Phil Spencer with his eyes all bugged out clutching his throat making a choking sound!

iplay1up21614d ago

I had no issues downloading. If my Series X is downloading slowly, I reset the console, and that almost always corrects downloading issues. It hardly takes any time at all to reboot Series X.

InUrFoxHole1614d ago

Yeah I normally don't either but for some reason when I 1st started to download it was going slow. I got in my feels. Thus the above comment. But when I'm wrong... im wrong lol. Loving it so far

One x and series x best versions and by far the best choices. Like the last news about this. The one x is much better then the s version that was force to drop frames to 60 and 30 fps. And can't run the game locked at 1080p in any mode. Even DF hopes that 343 can boost the rez of the s version... And was dropped the 120 mode on the s...

darthv721615d ago

Actually they said they hoped 343 would restore the 120hz mode for the S.

Orchard1615d ago (Edited 1615d ago )

Did you even watch the video? Most of what you said doesn't match what they said...

Also Series S is running with higher quality visuals than XB1X.

darkrider1615d ago

Yeah, with lower draw distance and under 1080p rez. Dude it's to be played on a small TV. I think the s is perfect for casuals. But again, the one x is just better. All in the comments there are saying the same. The one x is just a better and more powerful console.

Orchard1615d ago (Edited 1615d ago )

So it's confirmed you didn't watch the video. I watched it so you don't have to:

You: "with lower draw distance" (pretending its a big deal)
DF: "Trees render slightly further on XB1X, although really hard to spot without a 3x zoom" (barely noticeable)

You: "under 1080p rez"
DF: "1080p is basically locked, with barely any sign of DRS"

"Dude it's to be played on a small TV."
Now you're just showing you have no idea how TV's work. You do realize resolution isn't tied directly to TV size, right? You can get a 50" 1080p TV or a 50" 4K TV...

Also, do you limit yourself purely to native 4K games? If so, you've barely got any games to play on any platform.

You: "Even DF hopes that 343 can boost the rez of the s version"
DF: "Sacrificing a more dynamic 1080p to hit 60fps is an absolutely great trade for this console"

Series S is also using Series X textures:
"But its an example of actual texture quality differing between the generations, one that may well be in favor of the Series S overall"

Lastly, I'll point out, you are not 100% of the market. Not everyone wants to, or can, spend $499 on a games console. If I were a kid today, I would be totally happy if my parents bought me a $299 console that could play Halo at 60fps.

Just because you are not the target audience for a console, doesn't mean it's a bad console.

John_McClane1615d ago

My one x seems less powerful than my series s in all of the games I've played on both, so far.

anubusgold1615d ago

Im on pc we can turn that resolution scaling off just set it to 1440P and rock on at 130 fps locked on ultra settings.

"Dude it's to be played on a small TV"... okay, let me ask you a serious question on that subject. Currently i have my Series S on a 55" 4k samsung and my One x on a 40" 4k samsung. Should i swap them? I have both set to their native output of 4k and wondered if putting the S on the smaller screen would be better since it tends to run games more in the 1440 or less range.

Plus i need a bluray player in the front room as my regular LG one is not working right. And i can replace it with a one x.

darkrider1615d ago

Yeah, you should. The console with higher rez on the better TV. Because the image will look sharper then the way around. Even if you had a oled. But not only that. I don't wich model you got. But the settings should also be adjust. There are many you tubers that help you take the better image of the TV. I did that with my xh900 and it was big change. Many setting aren't on when you buy the tv

franwex1615d ago (Edited 1615d ago )

I would swap them for sure.

Unless you play more on the smaller tv.

Orchard1615d ago (Edited 1615d ago )

I'd say that's totally up to your personal preference. A few things I would factor in if I were making the decision:

- The capabilities of both TV's (HDR, VRR, 120hz, Dolby Vision, etc.). XB1X cannot take advantage of a lot of premium TV features.
- No 120Hz on XB1X, if you like playing at high framerate (and your TV supports it).
- Not all XB1X games run at 4K or have a huge delta in res between XB1X and XSS
- XSS games typically exhibit higher level visuals than X1X games, so those will probably look better on your better TV & you probably want to play the best version of a game
- Not sure how complicated your media stand setup is / how much of a pain it is to change it again, but XB1X's days are numbered, we're going to start seeing less and less games come to last-gen. There will be games that you can only play on your XSS and you'll probably want to play them on your best TV.

If it were me, I think I'd actually keep the XSS on the primary TV - since it would let me play last gen and next gen games, whereas XB1X wouldn't. But I'm also not factoring in the fact you watch blu-ray movies on your Xbox, so your needs are slightly different from mine.

Another thought, and I'm not sure this is true but you have both so you'll know, but don't the Xbox's all use the same power cable etc? and both should be using ultra high speed HDMI 2.1 cables, so in theory you could just swap the box as needed with minimal disruption / no rewiring etc.

Quality mode 1080p / 30 frames on Series S… sight*

darthv721615d ago

That was a surprise considering the S was able to push 1440p at 30 during initial testing. Same with 120fps in performance mode. Im guess 343 opted to not take any chances with stability and may address that later.

Orchard1615d ago

This game is looking great and seems to be a blast to play. Impressive how well this engine scales all the way back to the anemic 2013 Xbox. The delay was worth it.

Looking forward to trying this out tonight.

Xbox One X 1440p@60 vs Xbox Series S 1080p@30? WTF?

Orchard1615d ago

You are comparing two different modes there, for X1X that is performance mode, and that is quality mode on the Series S.

With both in performance mode, it becomes 1440p60 (XB1X) vs 1080p60 (XBSS). You could make an argument that XB1X should be running at 1080p too, given DF said it's the only platform that struggles to hit 60.

Eidolon1615d ago (Edited 1615d ago )

1280 x 720 to 1440p @ 60 yeh. I think Series S performance is 1080p solid 60.
Playing on Xbox One X and it looks pretty good for last gen. I could go on PC and try for lower frames and better graphics on my ol RX 580.

darthv72185d ago

...and its barely been 4 years. LMAO

Halo Infinite?
Hell no, It's Finished.

Yang_kai184d ago

Well good luck with the next game, been on almost all systems will help the game life and strengthen their community with fresh blood.

RaidenBlack184d ago

no MP till Halo 7, as per leak
Don't know if it'll release parallelly with Halo 2R or Halo 3R or totally after the trilogy of remakes.

Inverno184d ago

Onto the next 10 year promise! When that turns out to be more Unreal slop you can drop it and promise the same for the game after.

franwex184d ago (Edited 184d ago )

I’m one of the 15 people that regularly play this. Oh well. Hopefully the game will retain a small dedicated player base.

Halo art director leaves studio after 17 years with ominous message alluding to discontent

Glenn Israel writes: "As of today and after seventeen long years, I am officially no longer contributing to the Halo universe. There is little more I can say for the moment, though I intend to share this particular story in its entirety when it is absolutely safe to do so next year. In the meantime, I have a message for anyone and everyone who needs to hear it.

I know that the state of our industry seems dire, but never forget that you are *free to choose*. No illusion of security nor promise of wealth or fame or power is worth trading away your health, your dignity, your ethics or values - and no one can force you to. Stay strong, take evidence when necessary, and find where you belong."

My god.
There's a story for next year.

VenomUK212d ago

I’m really disappointed to learn there are still people/morale problems. I thought the whole point of rebranding 343i to Halo Studios was to signal that real changes had been made - not to cynically rebrand to paper over the problems.

I really hope the Halo CE remake is great and gets people hyped for the future of the series.

DarXyde212d ago

It's inevitable with the modern landscape. Even if some issues have been assuaged, new ones crop up all the time.

I'm willing to bet AI and the lack of regulation is causing substantial upset.

shinXseijuro213d ago (Edited 213d ago )

He said something very marking . We tend to complain a lot about the industry but deep down I realize that we never have we been offered this crazy amount of games all available for you to play now . You can literally play any sorts of games in 2025 . Nobody is forcing you to buy the latest COD or the latest BF . You’re more of a 8 bit cozy gaming guy there’s a whole niche of modern games for that . You like micromanaging there’s games for that . I feel like we have been spoiled so much we just stopped being realistic and thinking for ourselves . We follow trends cry about stuff online when you are the buyer you have the power .

Notellin212d ago

I'm not buying any games until another Immersive sim is made.

PhillyDonJawn213d ago

....wth happened over there?
Does this confirm a new Halo by next year?
What did they want him to do that made him feel it was morally wrong or a insult to his integrity?

-Foxtrot213d ago

Well how about that, a name change doesn’t fix internal issues

Who would have thought

MS was throwing money around for a long time but now it’s time to pay the Piper.
