Ubisoft Reveals Quartz Platform

This is an interesting idea and it will be something to follow going forward. Today, Ubisoft announced Ubisoft Quartz, a new platform for players to acquire Digits, the first NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) playable in an AAA game and running on energy-efficient technology.

LG_Fox_Brazil1625d ago

I can't wait to give a very hard pass on this one

porkChop1625d ago

I don't necessarily mind blockchain and such being integrated in a way that makes sense/has a benefit for the game or player. But NFTs? Wtf is the point of this? It's so dumb.

Palitera1625d ago

The point is gaining money by playing the game, pure and simple. Another layer of reward for the game. Good? Bad? It's a matter of opinions, but it's hard to argue that there's no point when players will be earning actual money with the feature.

Anyway, it's just a matter of time before other major companies jump into it. Can't wait for Diablo's NFT auction house design horror.

melons1624d ago

You're wet behind the ears if you think any major gaming companies will ever give you money for playing games instead of taking more from you.

Old McGroin1624d ago

I'm reading that the NFTs will mostly be cosmetics. Won't they become worthless when the game is eventually shut down?

Palitera1624d ago

@melons: I can only think that your message comes from complete ignorance. The money does not come from the companies, but from the decentralized market (similar to Diablo's auction house, multiplied by a million).

Again, not saying that it will be good or willl last, but Sky Mavis got a valuation of a few BILLION dollars last month when it was raising funding. Ubisoft is in, hyper-casual companies are in... You're out.

Majin-vegeta1625d ago

Guess Tom Henderson was right...

CobraKai1625d ago

I still don’t understand what NFTs are.

Double_O_Revan1625d ago

I still don't even care what NFTs are.

Inverno1625d ago

Like limited edition Pokemon cards but not as cool. So far it's been a while lotta shitty drawings that rich people really think are cool but aren't

pietro12121625d ago

That’s a pretty good explanation. Lol

Darkborn1625d ago

Like runescape how it had early game limited time items worth a lot. I remember I sold my account for like 2k like 10 years ago with limited time stuff on it lol. Not worth it honestly.

porkChop1625d ago

Non-fungible tokens. Basically a picture, gif, or whatever that people pay way too much money for. The idea is that you "own" it, though buying an NFT doesn't give you any actual copyright over the content in the NFT. Anyone can right click+save it, and there's nothing you can do about it. I've seen someone even buy a tweet. People are hoping to resell them and make tons of money. The reality is that many have bet and lost their entire life savings.

TLDR: We live in a society full of morons.

Smok911625d ago

Veve is making me thousands it’s crazy

isarai1625d ago

This was my confusion on the whole thing, like how is it being accepted as a legitimate currency with literally no security against copies?

Shiore2u1625d ago

Half trendy nonsense half money laundering

warriorcase1625d ago

Non-fungible token. It basically allows for digital scarcity or serialization by connecting items (Albums, art, digital items) to a blockchain contract with a set amount on purchase limit. The idea is the be able to create digital items with collectability and a rarity.
People have assumed it's only jpegs and gifs because that was cheap and easy market to fill when NFT's became the 'new thing' and speculation drove stupid money into it.

Kings of Leon released an album as an NFT for an example that's not a lazy jpeg/gif.
Veve is another example of a company that uses it currently to create digital statues to view in AR that are licensed from Paramount, Disney, Marvel etc.
The only real difference I could see with Ubisoft introducing NFT's to what they do now with their closed ecosystem is it (should) allow you to trade or sell these NFT items on third party sites outside of their ecosystem.
Guess we need to wait and see but in the end if these items aren't all that rare, desired or usable then it's all pretty much pointless.

CobraKai1624d ago

Thanks everyone. So basically, from all the posts I’ve read, it’s the next scam of paying very real money for very not real items. (Except for the album maybe). Creating artificial value for worthless crap.

DOMination-1624d ago

The majority of items are probably worthless and common sure but people like to collect sets and those sets usually contain one or several hard to find items. This is no different to any non-digital collectable, whether its Magic the Gathering or Hot Wheels model cars.

I'd say its more akin to gambling than being a scam. This is the next-generation of loot boxes right here.

Profchaos1624d ago

Money laundering schemes boosted by idiots.

Pay a ton of money to own the original signed JPEG file that is easily replicated. That's the same as owning a price of art and getting a certificate of authenticity while the rest of the world just get to buy the reprints from the gift shop.

I seriously believe it's a dumb idea and it's used as a way to wash money from illicit activities where a digital d**K that is the same quality as a third graders scribble can fetch thousands of dollars it's a simple how and why.

I was in on the crypto scene a few years back but I'm well and truly out now I wish everyone the best but the reality is most of the investors just believe in watching the world burn and thus is just another extension of that.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio21d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing21d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9221d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit21d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing21d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9221d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

To be fair, there are also human made games that release and lack any fun at all either.

jznrpg24d ago

But all of the great games have been made by humans

jwillj2k424d ago

One is by choice, the other is a feature.

PRIMORDUS24d ago

Guild Wars 2 been playing for 14yrs, 1st beta. This is just one company I support, Arenanet and NCSoft, even though I torrent, there are a few PC companies I will buy from. "PlayStation’s Horizon MMO spin-off, Horizon Steel Frontiers." I feel this will be good, NCSoft is a good developer/publisher.

CrimsonWing6923d ago

It’s a tool. Use it elevate things and get it done faster. I’m sorry but not every game made by humans is good. If this can help things, then I fully embrace it.
