The Outerhaven writes: We've played some great games this year but Kyle has some thoughts about how good Disco Elysium is. He's just having some trouble putting the words together.

It truly is. Some of the best writing and voice acting I've ever seen in any medium. Severely underrated game.

NecrumOddBoy1646d ago

Best writing ever in my opinion. Most intelligent use of political and religious verbiage mixed with multiple blended languages and created terminology too. This game is absolutely a masterpiece in dialog. Feels like Crime and Punishment but in an interactive entertainment medium.

Magog1646d ago

Have you played Vagrant Story? Brilliant writing IMO.

ElvisHuxley1645d ago (Edited 1645d ago )

It really reads like a great book. Crime and Punishment is a lofty comparison, but I find it hard to argue with. The characters are all fantastic too. I find myself getting lost in even little stuff like the squabbling of two war vets, and the voice in the intro, combined with the dialogue, just wow. Surprisingly funny too, the humor is dark, but I find myself laughing out loud frequently.
@Magog I played it a little when I was a kid, but don't remember, and I was too dumb back then to pick up on the subtleties of good writing. I'll have to find a way to check it out again, I've always heard great things.

MadLad1645d ago

The writing easily stands shoulder to shoulder with Planescape:Torment, and that's a glowing compliment.

anast1645d ago

Not in the same league as Dostoevsky, but the game really stands out. The writing combined with the figurative art style makes for a unique experience, which is rare for a video game.

thorstein1645d ago

The good news is that they are not done with Elysium.

Ninver1645d ago

Anyone remember In Cold Blood?

Tapani1645d ago

@Magog, Agree 100%. Vagrant Story is incredibly well written and directed. Both in Japanese and English.

It's an absolute stellar game, but I don't see how it can be considered underrated, let alone "severely" underrated. Everyone I know who likes these style of games has played and beaten the game. It got a 92 on OpenCritic with 96% of reviewers recommending it. It won more awards at The Game Awards show than any other game that year and won everything it was nominated for. It's the 11th highest-rated game on Metacritic, of all time.

DoctorOswin1645d ago

I can't wait to see what ZA/UM gives us in the future.

MadLad1645d ago

Anytime a smaller budget game like this does well, but doesn't sell in the numbers that you see with something like cod, all of a sudden games journos call it a "hidden gem".

Sorry the game didn't sell 5 billion copies, and have a marketing budget that could afford you your own personal island.

The game did well. So well they were able to add content, and port it to other platforms. So well we're still talking about it this long after launch. We'll be talking about it on best of RPGs list decades down the road.

SurgicalMenace1645d ago

The writing and the humor are second to none. I mean, Hades and Torment are great but not to the level of Elysium.

Tapani1645d ago

I don't think it's underrated at all! It also sold pretty well for that type of a game. I'm at the very last part, almost finished. What an incredible internal and external journey it has been. It kind of defined me as a person quite a bit. Looking forward to their next game! I don't even need it to be larger in scale, just hope they keep up the quality.

DoctorOswin1643d ago

Yeah this article wasn't made to talk about how it's underrated. It's just to talk about how it's a good game and hard to put into words.

Looking forward to my physical copy this winter. Need to push this up on the need to play list. It's getting long these days...

DoctorOswin1645d ago

I really want to buy the collector's edition.

Ethereal1645d ago

It's rad but man is it pricey.

swifty11645d ago

I got stuck at the part where you have 3 truckers or something hanging around that closed gate and you have to figure out what to do , great game I should get back at it and follow a guide to get past this part

DoctorOswin1645d ago

Talk to the racist guy standing near the Fritte(general store where you sell bottles), he'll send you to the Asian guy south and you can find out some info on the smuggler from him. Then you can go to the one kid who's leaning on the truck in front of the WiR OR go back to the racist guy near the Fritte and they'll both provide you with an answer on which truck you need to find.

swifty11645d ago (Edited 1645d ago )

Omg this is awesome thank you I didn’t think anyone would answer, or know what I was talking about! Going to get back in thanks dude

Ninver1645d ago

I haven't played this game but I gave you a thumbs up for taking the time to provide the gamer with info.

DoctorOswin1645d ago

Glad I could help man. It can be quite a pickle to figure out, especially if you think the one they're talking about is another person to the east. There's a bit of a red herring at that part.

MadLad1645d ago

One of the best, and most interesting RPG experiences I've had in a long time. Modern day classic.

DoctorOswin1645d ago

For sure. I was hooked and loved every moment of it.

Your Favorite Game Is Already Political

TNS: "While it's easy to agree that Dragon Age and Disco Elysium have something to say, every game has its own politics. That's a good thing."

Really?

My favorite game is Microsoft Flight Simulator. Stop basing your headlines on shaky assumptions for effect.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard's politics are not the problem. Throw all the politics you want at me. I don't mind at all. Quite the opposite. I appreciate it. They give depth to storytelling when they're well written and well integrated within the world building of a franchise. There are tons of shining examples of that and Veilguard isn't one.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard's problem is that its writing is extremely bad, childish, and feels like a bad fanfiction written by someone who isn't a fan. Disney has more edge than this.

That kind of writing is pretty literally insulting not only to the franchise and its fans, but to the politics it presents and the people they're supposed to represent.

Yes. Most games that tell a story are political, and that's great. But the politics can be supported and enhanced by good writing, or weighed down by bad writing, throwing immersion out of the window. Veilguard is the latter.

fr0sty550d ago

Yeah, politics are life. Games are virtual life. Some do it well (Helldivers is full of political jabs, and they pull it off.). Others, like this, don't.

senorfartcushion549d ago

It's full of political imagery regardless of intent. You can fly past the statue of liberty, the new world trade centre etc. So yes, it's political.

549d ago
Abriael548d ago (Edited 548d ago )

Wow. This is the most desperate, pathetic excuse to justify a poor article's argument that I've seen in a long, long time.

senorfartcushion548d ago

That's literally part of the definition of the word as fortold by the writers of history aka the people who are going to outlive you and you 9 year old, frightened opinion of the word.

Just because the word makes you afraid, it doesn't mean that writers and critics aren't already winning.

Armaggedon549d ago

“Bad writing”. Almost exclusively heralded by those that dont actually write.

Abriael548d ago

You don't need to be a writing professional to identify writing that sounds incredibly clumsy and immersion-breaking.

Products are judged by their customers, not by professionals only.

Armaggedon548d ago (Edited 548d ago )

@Abriel

What if its the inverse? What if its not clumsy writing, but an issue with the observer(audience)? Yes, the audience decides what they like and dont like, but there is a difference between “This is bad” and “I just dont like this”.

People dont realize they are deteriorating, this is a dangerous perception trap.

Abriael542d ago (Edited 542d ago )

That's a pretty ridiculous excuse. There is plenty of fantasy available to compare this mess to, including the Dragon Age franchise before. The writing on this doesn't even come close to the low-grade fantasy-romantic thirsty novels for lonely ladies that already have third-grade writing.

As I said, it's basically at the level of fanfiction, only written by someone who isn't a fan.

Armaggedon542d ago

@Abriel

An excuse? It’s only interpreted as an excuse from a bound perspective. Comparison, lack of understanding …no wonder people cant find peace.

How is plane porn not political in the era of climate change and global warming ?

Abriael542d ago

Plane porn doesn't pollute anything at all.

The stretches I'm seeing in this thread to justify an extra-dumb article are pretty epic.

One of my favorite games of all time is Tetris and it is not political. However I would have to agree that many great games in the industry do carry a political undertone or some form of social critique like Resident Evil, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem.

DefenderOfDoom2549d ago

I also still play Tetris ! Awesome puzzle game .

TricksterArrow549d ago

Agreed. Actually, I think most games aren’t even subtle. If people are missing the obvious political messages contained in games such as Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil and Mass Effect, they are simply not paying attention at all to the story (which is fine, some people only play for gameplay).

OtterX549d ago

Tetris is Russian propaganda, man! ;P

/s

TheColbertinator548d ago (Edited 548d ago )

Nyet. It is Soviet propaganda, tovarishch.

Friendlygamer549d ago

I agree but a lot of people who said this only subscribe to this notion until something actually challenges their views, then it's problematic, outdated, need to be fixed...

549d ago
Alos88549d ago

"Everything is political" is one of the most emptyheaded statements I've seen in recent years. Not every story has a political message. Not everything needs one either. Let art be art and stop placing demands on creators to cater to your political needs.

Sgt_Slaughter549d ago

"Let art be art and stop placing demands on creators to cater to your political needs."

The irony of this statement is palpable.

549d ago
Alos88549d ago

Funny how you didn't elaborate. It's almost as if you were hoping that pitiful attempt at a rebuttal would be enough all on it's own and that you wouldn't have to put any further thought into it.

HollowIchigo25549d ago

Veilguard's worst problem is not politics, it's the HORRENDOUS writing and dialogue. It's a high fantasy game where characters say "Eat sh*t" and "This goes hard!" or one of the companions saying "Uh...this blight...is weiiird!" . I mean, what the actual ****...
