He wants that kotick bonus.

PS1: Sells 102.5 million units
PS2: Sells 155 million units
PS3: Sells 87.5 million units
PS4: Sells 116 million units
Jim Ryan: "I wish hundreds of millions of people could enjoy our games."

porkChop1562d ago

That's not hundreds of millions of gamers though.

fr0sty1562d ago (Edited 1562d ago )

Um... if PS5 holds true to those sales numbers, it will be near half a billion consoles sold to hundreds of millions of people by the time this gen is over.

porkChop1562d ago

It's only hundreds of millions of people if you assume everyone who bought a PS1 didn't buy a PS2, and PS2 owners didn't buy a PS3, etc.

Hundreds of millions of consoles sold to largely the same group of people does not equal hundreds of millions of gamers. I've bought a PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP and a PS Vita. I don't count for 6 gamers, I count for one.

sourOG1562d ago (Edited 1562d ago )

Lmao. Some of those units count as more than one gamer.

sourOG1562d ago

How many siblings have shared a game console do you think? I would guess a pretty large number of those units, especially the offline consoles. I’d say at least 30-40% of those units count as more than one gamer. With absolutely no proof at all

porkChop1562d ago

"especially the offline consoles. I’d say at least 30-40% of those units count as more than one gamer."

That's not a known quantity though, it's just a guess based on nothing. And it still wouldn't make up "hundreds of millions" of gamers. I don't understand the issue here. It's pretty clear Ryan is talking about growing the market beyond the same ~250 million gamers it's been at for decades.

They want to reach 400 or 500 million gamers, or even more. In order to do that they have to find ways to reach the people they haven't been able to in the past. Again, I don't see the problem here.

Seraphim1561d ago

notice how high that PS2 era sales were. Yeah, that's a lot of broken consoles and returns due to lax return policies during that era. You could have a 3 year old machine and bring it for a exchange.

Anyway, like porkchop said, you can't take those numbers at face value. I went through 2-3 PS2s, I had two PS1s, still have my OG 60GB fatboy PS3 that's in desperate need for some new thermal paste but runs fine while with the PS4 I've purchased one at launch along with 2 Pros. Not to mention all the other gamers who bought at least 2 PS4s in the base then later the Pro. These numbers do not equate to individual gamers nor do they mean all 102.5 million people who bought a PS1 are still gaming. So on and so forth. It's simplistic and unrealistic to look at it that way.

darthv721561d ago

@sour, and some of those units count as the same gamer. I alone have over 30 different PS systems. 32 to be precise.

S2Killinit1561d ago

No matter how you cut that is hundreds of millions

fr0sty1561d ago

You guys are grasping at straws to try to prove a pointless point...

461 million consoles sold. Even if we remove 2/3 of those due to broken consoles, or the same person buying more than one, we still have well over 150 million consoles sold.... not single digits, not tens, but into the hundreds of millions of consoles sold.

There's hundreds of millions of playstation gamers out there no matter how you cut it.

EvertonFC1561d ago

I think you miss the point

GamingSinceForever1561d ago

You clearly did not comprehend anything that he said. You are looking at consoles sold when he is in fact talking about the software. Like God of War 2016 sold tens of millions not hundreds of millions copies.

maybe Ryan is starting to look favorably on what Spencer has been up to. Now MS wants to reach every TV through xcloud as they are doing with cell phones.

sourOG1562d ago

Not anytime soon. As long as a Sony console exists there won’t be day one on PC or service. There is supposedly talks with Netflix like Sony might make them a game or give them access to a few. I think that’s as far as it goes. MS has always had the foundation to do great things with windows money. They don’t care if people go to PC even though they sell a console. It’s a different strategy entirely. Sony depends on PlayStation.

badz1491561d ago

what game is being played by hundreds of millions of players? I hate it when they try to equate install base as the number of people playing games or buying every game released. there are billions of PCs out there but that doesn't mean "hundreds of millions" of people buying games on them!

all I'm saying to Jim Ryan is not to be too quick to diss console exclusivity just because there are billions of PCs out there! MS has since gone PC with 0 console exclusive and NOTHING from them has been huge sellers like those from Sony and Nintendo despite being available to the install base of billions! you can say Minecraft but MS didn't make that and just like GTAV, it's an exception. not even any CoD or FIFA is selling over 20mil every single year, so what hope does any other game has? stop being delusional and start seeing the reality of things.

PS has been the pillar in gaming for many years, thanks to the CONSOLE gamers, not PC gamers. you treat your fanbase well, you get rewarded and that has been the core of the PS business. stop being alluded by this "hundereds of millions" install base and trying to project them onto the mind of your fanbase. it's disheartening and annoying!

Atom6661561d ago

@ Badz

Roblox and Minecraft are the only two I know of that top 100million monthly players. Fortnite and others come close.

They do so because those games are everywhere. Sony doesn't care about your feelings. They care about money.

The money is in going to the consumer, not waiting for them to come to your closed little ecosystem. PC, mobile, and streaming are absolutely a focus of Sony's future. They would be stupid to ignore that.

Juvia1561d ago

That is literally the last thing we want.

S2Killinit1561d ago (Edited 1561d ago )

Seriously, f that. MS is going to be a boon for console gaming. I dont want anyone following them. Not Nintendo, not Sony.

SimpleSlave1562d ago

Just not the old ones. Nobody want to play those. 👍

Levii_921562d ago

Jim is a moron who has no idea what he's doing.

SurgicalMenace1561d ago

Says the person in the comments....
What amazes me is everyone speaking from a point of personal preference, only, as though that speaks for everyone.
Can you see the numbers that he can?
Can he see the numbers you can't?

Just because there are a few people wanting to revisit old games doesn't mean there's a majority that shares in their sentiment. Jim is about profit and that is great for Sony.

Atticus_finch1562d ago

Okay quote him exactly. I'll wait.

SimpleSlave1561d ago

In an interview with Time, Ryan discussed seeing versions of Gran Turismo running side-by-side on PlayStation 4, PS3, PS2 and PSOne. “The PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?” he said at the time.

"Kept you waiting, huh?"

Atticus_finch1561d ago

Fair enough that is a stupid remark to make.

SimpleSlave1561d ago

No worries. You wouldn't think that the CEO of Playstation would say such a moronic thing. But there it is. The guy is something alright.

Which in turn, might explain why they didn't care about the Playstation Classic.

giveyerheadawobble1561d ago

Or VR. Because in his little mind, there still aren't enough of people in the world yet that have caught on to it, so it makes less dolla. The idiot didn't even know the company was working on PSVR's successor so soon and had to backtrack.

Well maybe in another planet where people have all money. In this it's will be very hard.

z2g1562d ago

Of course he would. You could replace his name with any ceo or president and replace games with any product and the statement holds true. What corporate leader wouldn’t want their product in the hands of as many people as possible?

giveyerheadawobble1561d ago

And you think it's because he wants it "for the players" enjoyment? LOL

All he sees and hears is "Mooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooo!"
