Deathloop Vs Returnal: Who Looped It Better?

Curry writes, "Taking on the challenge of telling a story with a groundhog day theme can be an entertaining journey for both those who are creating and those watching as well. We’ve seen many writers take on this challenge lately with popular games like Returnal, Deathloop, and even 12 minutes. All of which emphasizes time travel as a way to unravel the mysteries of the story as we discover the past of the protagonist.

Perhaps two of the frontrunners for Game of The Year have created the most elaborate and entertaining time looping stories this year. Between Deathloop and Returnal, which game took this theme and created the best overall experience for gamers?"

Too me these are two very different games and should not be compared. They are in the same genre (rogue-like) but that is pretty much where the similarity ends.

Epicor1681d ago (Edited 1681d ago )

And I wouldn't define Deathloop's main genre as roguelike. Sure it's roguelike but personally I think it as an arcade FPS with roguelike mechanics. Roguelikes are often not comparable. How can one compare Hades to Returnal to Deathloop? They are all very different games even if all have roguelike game mechanics. And that's what "roguelike" should be considered: Game mechanics rather than defining the whole genre based on that. At least not anymore! Back in the days it was more clear when all roguelikes played the same (top down camera).

NeoGamer2321681d ago

@Epicor
Agreed. roguelike is more a mechanic then a genre. Kind of like first person and third person games. They all can be in any genre. They are mechanics and perspectives as you play the game.

dbcoops1682d ago

Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray looped it better.

roadkillers1682d ago

When's the game release? I have $60 waiting

JimmyDM901682d ago (Edited 1682d ago )

There’s a Groundhog Day video game that’s a sequel to the movie. “Groundhog Day: Like Father, Like Son.” If follows Phil Connors’s son through a time loop. It came out in VR a couple of years ago.

Yui_Suzumiya1682d ago

Hell yes.. something we can all agree on

Imalwaysright1682d ago

Edge of Tomorrow was also great.

Chevalier1682d ago

The boon All you Need is Kill that Edge of Tomorrow is based on is pretty good as well. The writer has been working on his sequel followup for awhile now too.

Yui_Suzumiya1680d ago

Agreed .. still waiting on the sequel

Glad I've got the option to experience both Glad I've got the option to experience both

Dirty_Lemons1682d ago

I see what you did there. 👨‍🚀

monkey6021682d ago

I've yet to play either. Looking forward to both

Dirty_Lemons1682d ago

Both were surprise hits for me, didn't look into either much before release, loved both of them. Deathloop was less frustrating, Returnal was probably the better experience, both were outstanding though.

sammarshall1021682d ago

Biome 3 is destroying me in Returnal those drones are lethal

The boss fight in Biome 3 is so cool though

Tacoboto1682d ago

Those drones, I hate them.

I had the most health yet, crossed the huge bridge and a half dozen of them rose before I was even halfway across. I didn't make it across...

That was this morning. The very next run, they didn't appear, and I took the boss' health halfway down. Then I got hit by the double-laser eyes three times in a row and was dead in five seconds.

You never know how a run will go. And it only takes 20-30 to get back to the boss, if you don't get an onslaught of those cursed drones!

kayoss1682d ago

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a glowing ball.

sammarshall1021682d ago

@Tacoboto Lol I feel your pain, I had 6 small healths and 1 large health, a fully max out health bar, 4 parasites attached, a level 12 gun, an astro figurine and I got into one of those lockdown areas before the boss and I left that area with only 1 small health left before facing the boss. I still got him down to his last phase but I didn't know how to get to him anymore as the level is crumbling i kept ziplining but i couldn't get close enough for some reason

Chevalier1682d ago

The one challenge room that locks down in Biome 3 with the mechanical robot that shoots and grabs you I would say is pretty hard the 1st couple of times that room will murder you.

@Taco and Sammarshall

The best weapon against the 3rd boss is the Rotgland Lobber. You can be floating around and charge shot him from anywhere. If you have an item slot available and you luck upon them the Projectile Portal is also really useful to have, one of my runs I had like 5 of those Projectile Portals and boy did I make quick work of that boss. Honestly think this boss would have made a better final boss than the one we had at the end. Regardless absolutely loved Returnal, definitely my GOTY so far.

sammarshall1021681d ago

Thanks for the support guys I just beat the boss in biome 3 :D

I agree both games are really good.
I highly recommend both to anyone who likes shooters.
And checkout any of house marque past games if you're interested in some really good arcades.

BLow1681d ago

Oh no. Your not allowed to like both lol. It always has to be all or nothing. This goes with any games.

Housemarque Reveals It Has No Plans For Live Service Or Free-To-Play Title

Ilari Kuittinen and Gregory Louden of Returnal developer Housemarque have revealed during an interview with Eurogamer at the studio’s 30th anniversary event last week that it has no plans to develop live-service or free-to-play games, “as long as people are buying premium games.”

kpgs358d ago (Edited 358d ago )

Why would they change? That's not where their expertise is.

Redgrave357d ago (Edited 357d ago )

Didn't stop Sony after acquiring Bluepoint, taking them from renowned remaster and remake quality and sticking them on a GoW live service title that never even went anywhere.

I can't speak to what gives Housemarque the ability to be different, but let's be thankful that they are able to do so in wake of current Sony.

derek357d ago

That GoW live service game was the dumbest idea ever. I thought they were remaking Bloodbourne or a Demons souls expansion (covering that broken arch stone). Sony was really panicked after that abk/Microsoft news hit. I hope it was a side project for Bluepoint and that there's another one in the pipeline. That GoW game apparently never got off the ground.

Eonjay357d ago (Edited 357d ago )

Blaming Sony for pursuing Live Service when the top 5 games every month by spend and engagement are live service games is illogical. Gamers are telling Sony where to invest so there is a real disconnect between what is said online and what people actually play. Who should Sony listen to? Clearly the logical decision is to listen to people actually playing games and whether we like it or not Sony would be in vioulation of it duty to its investors if it didn't try to pursue LS. People taking out their fustrations on Live Service games by attacking Sony and using it as the industry whipping boy does not fix the industry. You are just telling the rest of the industry that they can keep doing what they are doing because they aren't called Sony. All I hear people say is that they hate live service but every single month the top games are live service. You are all either lying or you don't know what you are talking about. Sony should pursue both SP and live service games.
