Metroid Dread file size smaller than initially expected

Nintendo and MercurySteam have reduced the file size of Metroid Dread quite significantly, and it won't be as big as first thought.

I dont expect the game to be over 1gb based on graphics

porkChop1680d ago

You know that's not how file sizes work, right?

Zeref1679d ago (Edited 1679d ago )

Graphics impact filesize significantly.

deleted1679d ago

HD textures usually take a large chunk of a game's file size. This game doesn't utilize texturing hardly at all, relies more on artistic style in other ways, so it's not surprising that is a smaller file size.

porkChop1679d ago

Both of you missed the point. I didn't say graphics don't affect file size. My point is graphics are not the only thing that affects file size. Just because a game doesn't have crazy graphics doesn't mean it'll be 1GB or less. That's absurd.

deleted1679d ago (Edited 1679d ago )

@porkchop I simply stated a fact. Textures are the #1 reason for large game sizes. Nintendo notoriously uses styles with very sparse texture usage, and often time uses none at all. Look at this article's other example of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, which uses 3gb of space. Metroid Dread's 4.1gb is comparable.

In an article about increasing game file sizes here, PC Gamer says, quote, "It's the textures above all, and nothing is going to stop them.":

https://www.pcgamer.com/how...

If a game hardly uses textures, it is to be expected that the size of the game file will drop considerably than if it were heavy on textures.

There are other major contributing factors such as audio, music. I would imagine Metroid doesn't have an exceptionally large soundtrack, and compression techniques continue to improve over time.

I'd say, you missed my point.

MadLad1679d ago

Well that's complete BS, honestly.
I mean, some people are better at compressing files than others, but things like textures and audio files highly affect file sizes.

If a file size is small, don't expect a lot in terms of texture work or voice work.

porkChop1679d ago

@Otter

You keep going on about textures but your point is moot. Just because a game has low detail textures does not mean that game will be 1GB. Plenty of things affect file size. The size/scale of a game's world/levels, the sample rate of both game and soundtrack audio files, voice acting, whether the audio is mixed in stereo or surround sound, whether a game's cutscenes are in-game or pre-rendered videos, etc.

We get it. Textures are the biggest factor in a game's size. Thanks Captain Obvious. But it's not the only factor. Games can still be big regardless of texture work.

4 GB, quick cash in Nintendo I see, 59.99 price tag.
Nintendo is like : "Oh man this so easy, thank you my loyal customers"

Funny to see how many times I see people talking about saying Nintendo doesn't pursue graphics but yet Nintendo loves to charge their customers with high prices like if it was a high end triple A game, like if it had lots and lots of content, deep story, etc. You can call this irony or hypocrisy, that's up to you but no way in Hell this is a 59.99 game, this is no more than a 29.99 max price tag!,

Nitrowolf21680d ago (Edited 1680d ago )

some studios can do a lot with game sizes. I mean look at the original 3D Zelda games, Majora mask was 661MB and Ocarina was just 25.7 MB

Skyrim was just 4GB on 360. Yeah Skyrim has more going for it probably than Metroid, but the file size of the game shouldn't really be a sign of the cost.

No Man's Sky launched at like 5GB, and ignoring the bugs that game was huge in what it had.

Fntastic1679d ago

The original Majora's mask was not 661MB, that's the 3DS version.

Nitrowolf21679d ago

You are right, and even still that’s small compared for how much is in it.

The OG was less than 100mb

septemberindecember1680d ago

By this metric, Call of Duty games must have the best "bang for your buck" am I right?

File size =/= quality

porkChop1680d ago

Do you actually believe any of the stuff you post?

Jin_Sakai1680d ago (Edited 1680d ago )

It’s a Nintendo article so of course there’s going to be negativity.

The game looks great and the small file size is good to hear. This isn’t a 3D Metroid Prime 4 game we’re talking about.

Jin_Sakai1680d ago (Edited 1680d ago )

@masterfox

“You can call this irony or hypocrisy, that's up to you but no way in Hell this is a 59.99 game, this is no more than a 29.99 max price tag!”

Since you’ve already played and beat the game tell us about it. Did you like it? How long was it? Was the story interesting?

You can’t judge a games price just because it’s a 2D game. It could be better than some $70 AAA games for all we know.

MadLad1679d ago

And when Sony is charging $70 for something like Returnal; a game made by 13 people, didn't have a giant promotion budget, and has minimal voice acting to account for extra cost, in the name of "videogames are so expensive to make anymore".

Do you have a problem with that one too? I would hope you do.

Seraphim1678d ago

While I don't think a max price of $30 is reasonable I do agree. If, for at the very least, because Switch carts are more expensive $30 isn't realistic. If you look at multi plat 3rd party games that are $30 they're usually, I believe, $5-10 more than their disc based counterparts. The price point should have been under $60 though; be it $40, $45 or even $50. The fact that I can buy Axiom Verge 1 and 2 for $50 on disc right now doesn't help matters. Granted Metroid Dread will look better and likely cost a little more to develop the fact remains that it's an old school style, 2D, dungeon crawler that is inexpensive to make.

The whole point, or guise of $60 games was due to the rising costs of development because of advancing technology. At the same time the past two generations have been shattering sales charts as more and more gamers enter the fold and more and more have incomes of their own.... The fact of the matter is that if an indie developer, Sony or MS made a similar game to Dread and tried charging $60 the world, or least internet, would be up in arms. Yet Nintendo gets away with it.

As for value. That's always going to be subjective but personally I've always had a tough time spending $60 on a lot of Switch games. For me, the value just isn't there. Then again, now that Sony is charging $70 for their games, which after taxes is more like $75..... don't get me wrong. even though I don't get a ton of use out of my Switch I do enjoy owning one. I've played some incredible and incredibly mediocre games from Xeno 1 and 2, Monster Hunter Stories 2, Astral Chain, Octopath Traveler, Mario Odyssey, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and so on.

Regardless of how I feel the fact of the matter that it is $60. I cringed and fought against pre-ordering Dread a few weeks ago but in the end decided to just take it up the wazoo. At the end of the day all these corporations have become greedy pricks looking to capitalize profit above all else. Everywhere we look we are being bleed dry. Yes business is about profits but you don't need to bleed consumers dry in the process. But that too is another subject. All I know is taht the last 2 generations I've bought a fraction of as many games as I did during the PS and PS2 era. All that extra money that went to developers games I bought meant another developer lost a sale.

I feel like the average 1st party Switch game is around 4 to 10 GB. This sounds about right. Nintendo isn't known to release games that are all that big. I think Mario Odyssey was around 7gb. No reason why this game should be bigger than that.

INMATEofARKHAM1679d ago

I really wish Nintendo would release all the Metroid games on the Switch platform.

diepdiep1679d ago

Totally. The older games will help reignite interest in the franchise after being absent for many long years. They should bring back "Fusion" at least since it's before "Dread".

The 10 Biggest Nintendo Direct Moments of the Switch Generation

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Last week Nintendo held this year's surprisingly packed not-E3 Direct; with a full schedule for this year and a vague promise of a console successor next year, it's very possible that we've now seen our final Nintendo Switch Direct, or at least one with major first party reveals. That makes this a good time to sit back and reflect on a generation of Direct moments, from the shocking and surprising, to the joyous and exhilarating - and, quite often, all at once."

Metroid Dread Has Sold Over 3 Million Copies, Reveals Developer

Enric Álvarez, the CEO of Metroid Dread developer MercurySteam, has revealed that the title has now sold over three million copies worldwide.

jaymacx1014d ago

It’s good to see Metroid do well. Hopefully we hear something soon about Metroid Prime 4

Hereandthere1014d ago (Edited 1014d ago )

Wait up, 3 million worldwide out of a possible 120 million is considered good for a legendary franchise like metroid?

JEECE1014d ago

Metroid has never sold super well. Lots of people under under the mistaken impression that, because franchises like Mario Kart, Smash Bros., 3D Mario games, more recent Zelda games, and Animal Crossing sell huge numbers, that all Nintendo franchises sell at that level, and that they always have.

This is pretty good for a Metroid. Dread will probably end up being the best-selling game in the franchise, if it isn't already.

Sciurus_vulgaris1014d ago (Edited 1014d ago )

Metroid Prime was said to have sold 2.8 million copies, so Dread is likely the best selling game in the series.

Rebel_Scum1013d ago

Not everyone is a metroid freak ho ho ho

MetroidFREAK211013d ago

@Rebel_scum *squidward laugh*

ZeekQuattro1014d ago

It took some doing but I'm glad it finally made it past that milestone.
