The Medium on PS5 shows big differences compared to Xbox Series X

Face-off by Digital Foundry : The Medium is an interesting game for sure - one we've covered in the past on both Xbox Series consoles and PCs, but I must admit, going into this one, I didn't expect the PlayStation 5 port to see so many changes from the existing console versions. Just about every multi-platform project we've seen so far on the new wave of consoles has seen effective feature parity between Series X and PS5 because, after all, they are very similar machines at the architectural level. However, with The Medium, Bloober Studio appears to have rebalanced the game to produce something very similar but also quite different to the original Series X release.

PS5, lowest resolution 1620p
Series x, lowest resolution 1026p

to obtain a much higher resolution for the PS5 version, some sacrifice's were made to raytracing / shadows & lighting quality, while initially the xbox version had bad frame pacing issues, they were later patched out, the PS5 version suffers from the same bad frame pacing issues and will hopefully also get patched out with a later update, the overall performance on the PS5 is a locked 30 fps even in demanding areas, while on the series x it can suffer dropped frames in more demanding areas

its clear they approached the PS5 version very differently, and wanted to achieve a much higher resolution while at the same time sacrificing as little as possible in terms of overall visual effects

gamer78041694d ago (Edited 1694d ago )

Bloober makes some great suspenseful games but technically they aren’t good standard bearers for the machine they play on they typically aren’t optimized well and have some issues.

CaptainHenry9161694d ago

But this isn't the only game. But, the biggest difference is using the dualsense controller. It's like icing on the cake

ABizzel11693d ago (Edited 1693d ago )

The game has always been an unopitmized yet technically semi-challenging game dual to the dual rendered worlds.

That being said this is the same game on both platforms but with different priorities.

The PS5 version has a much higher resolution making it much sharper. While the Series X version has higher quality Shadows and Raytracing (although highly limited in reflections to begin with).

I'll continue to say this Raytracing isn't going to be a huge benefit for these consoles simply because AMDs 6000 series GPUs aren't great at Raytracing to begin with. The higher resolution is a greater improvement IMO, and hopefully the Series X version gets a patch to lower RT to 25% and offer a higher resolution.

alb18991694d ago

The biggest difference is that to play it on PS5 you had to wait several months and pay 49.99....thats it!

SurgicalMenace1694d ago

This fact is why Playstation continues to have the best experiences, because we're actually able and willing enough to support our community with our wallet. Keep settling for GP offerings whilst hating Sony and hoping for something great from MS.

69.99 is a small price to pay for greatness so 49.99 is a no brainer. You ever wonder why all these companies praise Sony? Could it be that they can actually flourish because we're willing to pay?🤔

Orchard1694d ago

"69.99 is a small price to pay for greatness"

I guess we found Jim Ryan's N4G account.

"Keep settling for GP offerings"

Keep settling for MSFS, Back4Blood, EA Play, Psychonauts 2, Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, Every Zenimax game going forward and many more? It's going to be damn hard to settle for that but I think I can make it work /s

SurgicalMenace1694d ago (Edited 1694d ago )

Yeah, settling....all aforementioned games are paid for for you in all regards to the lack of faith that MS has in their community. If that makes you proud that they only believe that their community can only afford 14.99 a month for their offerings, then continue.🤣🤣

BTW, as a business consultant, I have great respect for Mr. Ryan and his ability to make Sony the most profitable than they've been in years. I have great hopes for Windows 11, as well, and I am more than sure that my stock holdings in the company will be just as hopeful.

Concerning the meager trimmings of GP, I'll leave it to the unwitting to celebrate having to be given games to keep themselves satisfied. As long as it benefits you, right? So keep living with it, as some of us don't mind spending top dollar for what we want. Discounts are cool, but are not necessary for us to be supportive.

SurgicalMenace1694d ago (Edited 1694d ago )

Also, all but Psychonauts and Forza, have yet to be unproven so settle down in lifting your praise before the results are in....wouldn't want more disappointment to ensue.🤷🏾‍♂️

Sony has a proven formula while this is MS's 4th generation of theoretical folly. Good luck.🤣🤣

13sentinel1694d ago

O No, boo hoo, whatever shall we do? We had to wait an extra few months to play this boring piece of cardboard, o nooooo

Orchard1694d ago (Edited 1694d ago )

@SurgicalMenace A business consultant who doesn't understand that subscriptions outperform boxed goods - I feel sorry for those consulting you.

I can't wait for Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime TV and Spotify etc. to all finally expand into the super profitable boxed movies and music CDs space!

The only part you are correct on is that Sony and Microsoft are doing great right now, better than ever before.

The meager trimmings of GP - MSFS Meta 90, PN2 87-89, Forza and Halo will be 85+ also. Heck, even one of the top PS5 games is a Microsoft made game which will appear on GamePass, and sequels will appear day 1 - DeathLoop Meta 88.

Whatever will GP customers do with their lackluster 85+ metacritic games for $10/mo, how unfortunate! /s

I play on PS5 primarily - it's a great box, but let's not be stupid and think that Sony charging $70 for a game is somehow good for us consumers, it isn't. I am a PS gamer and I would love a PlayStation GamePass.

SurgicalMenace1694d ago

No need to feel sorry, it's all blessings, smiles and comfort on this end.🤷🏾‍♂️ Ummm, without proper projections for GP, which MS fails to release, anything you're aiming to cement your standings on, is fragile at best.

Meager: thin; slim.(When the term is exercised this way, it is used as a measure of options or the lack there of).🧐

How many blockbuster experiences has MS produced? GP was their answer to losing in sells to even the Switch and not wanting to keep being shown that their community doesn't support them. How else could you explain the lack of development quality in their 1st party offerings?

Are we infantile now? Review scores are only a measure of critical success not commercial.🤣

Microsoft, though they are worth a MILLION BILLION TRILLION dollars, has failed to show what that means to their supporters. Sony, who's worth only a 10th of MS, has shown for 25 years why they're a market staple and leader. You are aware that MS has NEVER seen a profit in their gaming division in 4 generations, right? Why do you think that is?

Sony is ALREADY seeing profit from the PS5 in less than a year. Wonder why that is?🤔

Note: Giving a large volume of games away with a 14.99 month service is not a good sign. Not sure if you've crunched the numbers. I mean, Halo infinite is releasing incomplete. Does this tell you nothing? Isn't that a flagship title? How many years are you going to remain blind?

Even with the almighty GP in the market MS is still far behind in the sells department. Blind faith is cool, but numbers are much better.

Lastly, celebrating for MS making a purchase is equivalent to celebrating a college acceptance letter, without results it's only a gesture.😌

SurgicalMenace1694d ago

Oh and paying a premium for quality is great for the people and the company. How long has Porsche, Bentley, Ferrari, Jaguar, Mercedes, and BMW been around? Man, it almost makes sense when you don't restrict yourself to only what's offered to you....you get what you pay for.

alb18991693d ago (Edited 1693d ago )

It feels like you all had a brain wash. How can't you see a clear winner in all Gamepass subscribers?
Why would you push people to buy a 70 dollars game better than a subscription of 15?
I pay the 15 and occasionally when Sony brings a master piece i pay 39.99 used because I have to much to play on Gamepass so I can wait.
You guys are blind, your fanboy status is reaching a point where is even not healthy for your mind and wallet.... 😲 Wow, just read again all your responses and if you don't see a problem go running to a psychiatrist to see if there is a freaking cure to your washed brain 🧠....danmm! jajajaja!

1693d ago

MadLad1693d ago

@surgical

Would love to see the numbers of people who would bite on a Gamepass-like service on Playstation .... were it to exist.

I know PS Now is a thing, but doesn't do well, and accounts for just a small percentage of the Playstation userbase.
I doubt that's just because Sony players are just so dedicated they make a point to buy retail.
I'm highly sure it's purely because it's a weak service that people just don't find worthwhile to invest into.

SurgicalMenace1693d ago

I'd have you know, sir, that I do drive and live in luxury. Is it so far from reality to encounter one's who don't have to be spendthrifts to experience their entertainment? I guess no one is willing to pay an asking price because you're not, huh?

No millionaires could ever exist on N4G, just people living from paycheck to paycheck scrounging for their next meal whilst wasting their earnings on luxuries they only complain about.

Note: Last I checked a douche flushes out toxins, bacteria, and other undesirables from an otherwise pleasurable experience. I'll accept the compliment.😁

Perhaps when you come to understand how hypocritical it is to expect nominal costs while wanting the highest value to be paid to yourself is, you'll realize why the gap between our earnings is so wide.

Compare and contrast:
You are making snide comments and complaining about price.
I'm enjoying my life with entertainment and luxury, comfortably enough to know paying full price is investing into the future of something I never want to see die.

You know when you love something, there's no asking price too high. I wonder if your love for those that surround you is limited to vacancies of your pockets as well?🤔 Calm down and live a little, this is supposed to be all fun and games. Literally🤷🏾‍♂️

SurgicalMenace1693d ago (Edited 1693d ago )

Look, it's Mr. Cruz.😂 Services are fine but none of them have any marketable value. Sony seems to know this, ultimately, hence the lack of any real push outside of saying "it's here if you want it". They have the backing of the gamers, the devs, the industry, etc because they create GREAT content to compliment their notoriety.

Something like GP may come along but it's clearly not necessary on Sony's end. Everyone saying that they won't pay this or that are overshadowed by the millions that will. Can't you see the wide gap in the quality of games each company produces? To achieve critical and commercial success is nothing to bate an eye at.

After so long of ignoring the obvious, you all just sound bitter and defeated, overall. Giving credit where it's due is not hard when you actually know how to identify greatness. This feat become inherently easier when you experience greatness yourself.

I guess bashing the winners in life can become a habit adopted by those who've not experienced many victories themselves. Play on players.

ABizzel11693d ago

@Surgical

For Sony and Nintendo first party games and some AAA / AAAA 3rd party games I agree.

The Medium is none of the above. This should have been included in PS+ for October.

SurgicalMenace1693d ago

@Abizzel

I've only just purchased, The Medium, I've not had the chance to play it yet. Once I'm finished with Tales of the Arise, I'll give it a spin.

gamer78041693d ago

People should play it regardless if you like suspenseful story heavy games. It’s worth 50$. It’s worth paying for gamespass.

I feel like these technical breakdowns are rarely for those interested in technical aspects. These sort of videos in articles always turn into my box is better than your box in such and such way just enjoy the console or the platform that you like and let others enjoy their preference simple as that

Man let's be honest here if you are playing a game in 4k and another person is playing that same game in 1880p naked eye can't tell the difference. We should all want at the very minimum 1440p with at least locked 60 FPS or above. FPS matters so much to the overall experience of playing a game. Once again both PlayStation 5 and Xbox series X can give us upwards of 4K with 60 FPS so just enjoy the platform that you prefer to play games on and let's please mature up as a community so we can stick together and have our voices be heard

KingofBandits1693d ago

How, just HOW do you launch a game on a new platform months later and repeat the frame pacing issues you fixed on the other version? LOL

Xbox series x ssd > ps5 Ssd. 😁 so much for the super fast ssd.

Darkborn1694d ago

I mean, the SSD is over twice the speed of the xbox's. This is just anothet issue of not optimizing it right.

ABizzel11694d ago

Has nothing to do with it. As digital Foundry has stated in other, these 3rd party developers don't have their game engines optimized to for the PS5 NVMe APIs. Ratchet, Resident Evil Village, and more are examples of how fast the SSD is when optimized.

0rbital711693d ago

the only games that will be ps5 optimized will be sony 1st party titles, even then it will be a moot point.

darkrider1694d ago

Ps5 gpu > series x gpu 😁 so much for the super powerful gpu

gravedigger1694d ago

That ia funny, like the post above about SSD. LOL

InUrFoxHole1693d ago

You showed him. Try not to let trolls make you upset about plastic.

Profchaos1694d ago

It's basically a generation slower in terms of SSD speeds so umm nah

dbcoops1694d ago

Developers who actually take the time to optimize for PS5's SSD > developers who don't. Troll elsewhere.

Hofstaderman1694d ago

You basing this on performance from a AA studio. Let's compare apples to apples. Let's compare a AAA MS studio to a AAA Sony 1st party studio and see the outcome. I have a feeling you will eat crow.

Alex should only talk about Microsoft games. The length he goes to try and defend Microsoft. Bottom line much lower rez and worse frames. The ps5 is just much better on rez and frames. You can say this in 4 or 5 lines... But the rt and shadows.... I think this dude should never ever again talk about shadows and lightning because he clearly doesnt understand...

1694d ago Replies(1)
Neonridr1694d ago

did you read the article? The PS5 ups the rez but drops a lot of the extra stuff. Maybe you don't understand because you're blinded by your love for Sony. Do you understand how resources are allocated?

darkrider1694d ago

No spin here much, much higher rez and much better frames. He tried to spin but the reality.... Alex battlecroft is well know for is loyalties. Should write only about Microsoft games. We all know what he told... shadows were the problem of on fps gameplay trailer... Not that it looked a game from two Gen ago...

Orchard1694d ago (Edited 1694d ago )

@darkrider Devs should just remove all next-gen graphics functionality including, but not limited to, raytracing and improved shadows and lighting, then every game will run at 8K at a stable 240Hz /s

dbcoops1694d ago

You dont have to love Sony to prefer a higher resolution presentation of a game, just so happens Playstation is where you get that for The Medium.

InUrFoxHole1693d ago

Correct sir. But both consoles get the game. That's more important to me.

darkrider1694d ago

Of course he does. Like the halo trailer. It was a problem with shadows and lightning... Yeah right. An expert.... Just need to fix that...

Profchaos1694d ago

Look at how much backlash his halo video received from people who also know what they are talking about. Nxgamer put out a whole dispute video for it.

I'm not saying he doesn't understand it but I'm saying that he is not the world's foremost expert has made mistakes if you watch some of the direct videos he might try to place an educated guess and find out later it's wrong which he doesn't handle well he hates admiting he's wrong.

Silly gameAr1694d ago

I remember somewhere where it said Alex was a member of an xbox fanboy discord, and got caught.

If MS isn't about to do another PR blitz, you barely hear from the guy.

nRicosS1694d ago

Waste to educate you, your brain can't handle it

dbcoops1694d ago

So its shadows and lighting over resolution now? Hard to keep track of these goal posts.

SeTTriP1694d ago

He does but, that alone doesn't exclude his bias which he clearly is.

Chevalier1694d ago

@Orchard

Yeah cause you know enough to explain yourself? Lol. Doubtful. But yeah since you know so much why don't you go ahead and explain all the tech and development techniques since you're also an expert.

I don't put all that much stock I to their comparisons as they have historically been proven to cut ms more slack look at the gears of war 5 video vs god of war for an example. God of war had constant 400% zoom ins to look at texture detail in fears they did It once to look at an ear and say it had some transparent quality which I'd argue it didn't really have.

DF has been on a slippery slope into ms pocket ever since the one X when they were flown out to Redmond to check it out and then they got to take home a series before any other reviewer or press team and hands on with the xsx first asking with being the team that occasionally gets to break the news on some Ms announcements. So really why would they harm that relationship with high level of scrutiny. The channel started as a unbiased comparison channel years back but I'm not so sure these days

Also I've seen a few charts on the Channels profitability looking at video views over time it's not as high as you would think.

I'm still a viewer I just don't take their Xbox vs PS stuff serious

Long story short: it's better on PS5...but equally boring.

Neonridr1694d ago

it's a higher res but loses other stuff. Xbox could have done exactly the same thing, nothing would have changed.

Profchaos1694d ago

Yeah I don't think many people understand that the machines are fairly equal it's mostly down to how a game is designed and it's targets there isn't much that the ps5 can do that the xsx can't and vice Versa. In these comparisons there may be minor differences in a 400% zoom or a system may drop a few frames at a particular section for a bit.
People are looking for a secret sauce a reason to say that their purchase of electronics a is better than b.

TheDoomedGuy1694d ago

@prof

No secret sauce. More and better games is all people are looking towards.

As usual ps5 prioritizes frame rate. Nothing new here.

dbcoops1694d ago

Yeah but a higher res is more important than the other stuff, unless of course that's not the case anymore for some odd reason.

strifeblade1693d ago (Edited 1693d ago )

@dbcoops

Before it was about resolution and fps because one x and ps4 pro were running the same graphical effects. When comparing resolutions and performance its not apples to apples anymore since the ps5 is not capable to run those effects at an acceptable performance vs series x which is why they are dropped entirely. Ie raytracing etc.

Finally I'm not surprised as the series x is 20% more powerful and run similar architecture. It's not magic folks, if it was dropped in the ps5 version it's not because the game looks better with same resolution upgrade vs intense next gen graphical effects.

Binarycode1693d ago

Wrong.

Xbox could have done the same thing, It would have had to cut the same things to reach the same consistent rez.

Xbox is a much lower rez, running those settings.

PS5 could have easily run the xbox settings, but at the same rez as xbox.

strifeblade1693d ago

@binary code

Nothing I said is wrong. It's a fact xbox is 20% more powerful and as a result will run games better. Running nextgen graphical effects will always look better than basic effect at higher resolutions. If xbox wanted to drop the effects they could and can run ps5 but it will run better 20% better. No way around it

Neonridr1692d ago

@Binarycode - exactly, the devs opted to push more for the Xbox version, and it suffers elsewhere. For the PS5 they did the opposite. Had the PS5 pushed the extra shadows / lighting, the resolution would have suffered too.

It's not rocket science.

+ Show (4) more repliesLast reply 1692d ago
strifeblade1693d ago (Edited 1693d ago )

The fact is ps5 loses alot of graphical effects vs series x. Like ray tracing etc. These are the effects that make game look next gen. If they could run the same effects and reach graphic parity with xbox they would have those effects but the series x Is 20% more powerful which means if xbox had trouble running these graphical effects at higher resolution then the ps5 is going to run at a 20% lower resolution and or lower fps.

In the end the developers dropped the nextgen graphical effects and you have the version that looks more like a polished ps4 pro version than a next gen looking series x version.

Try to spin this anyway you like but xbox has been having power advantage for a while and we will keep getting intense graphical performances from games

Binarycode1693d ago

Wrong.

Xbox resolution is reduced to deal with those nextgen features. So low infact it's not even a next gen rez.

To reach the rez PS5 has, the xbox version would need to cut exactly the same thing.

Yet the PS5 version looks better, with higher rez. Frame pacing needs fixing.

Unreal engine.

Jack of all trades, Master of none.

ufo8mycat1694d ago

There is ZERO excuse for this game NOT to run at 60fps, given the graphics of this game.
It's disappointing to see that some developers just don't have the talent to achieve this in this day and age.

Profchaos1694d ago

Lack of knowledge about the system they had ms help them code it for xsx now going to ps5 it's a while new Dev approach and system they don't know.

Also the weird goal of going for a higher resolution over prioritising the effects that they were pushing hard on xsx is weird

TheDoomedGuy1694d ago

Game doesn't run well on the Xbox either....nor on PC. In fact I believe it's most broken on PC. Powerful machines could barely run the damn thing.

CantThinkOfAUsername1694d ago

There is. It renders two parallel worlds at the same time.

TheDoomedGuy1694d ago (Edited 1694d ago )

But it's not complex. It doesn't look groahically demanding either. It's poor optimization all around. Makes no sense that the most powerful cards in the market would have any struggle with this game.

Profchaos1692d ago

I think it's funny they used this excuse like they were the first to do it but there's been a number of games that took this parallel universe approach which didn't have this problem Titanfall 2 for one.

My thinking is because there's less experience in this studio overall

The Medium TV Show Announced by Bloober Team

Bloober Team has announced that it will turning its psychological horror game The Medium into a TV show, though no details were provided.

I wonder if the TV will lean heavily on that same split-screen mechanic. Not sure if it would work, but it would definitely be interesting.

rlow11326d ago

I think that would be the main selling point. It would set the show apart from others in its category.

coolbeans1326d ago

Given techniques like split diopter shots (seen a lot in De Palma films) or splicing different takes in editing, there's way to incorporate a similar split-screen effect.

Deathdeliverer1327d ago

For the first time ever I feel like a tv show could be infinitely better than the game. Man that game was a dumpster fire of boredom.

Petebloodyonion1327d ago

I do think there's nice untapped potential for a Tv show with a six-sense vibe.
Call me crazy but I'm one of the few who did enjoy the plot of the game and finished it.
Was it perfect hell no but nice and refreshing hell yeah.

coolbeans1327d ago (Edited 1327d ago )

-"Call me crazy but I'm one of the few who did enjoy the plot of the game and finished it."

Don't let the most vocal of this site fool you: you're in the majority for those who actually played it.

monkey6021327d ago

If you guys enjoyed it, then good for you but Bloober has a history of writing trauma themes into their plot and handling it horribly. The Medium was particularly problematic. People aren't advocating against Bloober for no reason.

coolbeans1326d ago (Edited 1326d ago )

@monkey602

-"...Bloober has a history of writing trauma themes into their plot and handling it horribly."

As someone who's played almost all of their recent main games to some extent (Layers of Fear 2 excluded), they are inconsistent writers. Blair Witch had some rough execution for example.

-"The Medium was particularly problematic."

It has moments of shock value that harm the overall experience, but there's actually meaningful subtext buried here. Whenever I see the term "problematic" I reflexively wonder how much that accusation is fueled by reddit's subculture or whatever. By today's standard, Silent Hill 2 would get dinged for being problematic despite that... being the entire point. Bloober's applying a 'trauma begets trauma' motif through its world by incorporating the ravages done to Poland by Nazis and Communists. There are legit reasons why all of these pieces are in place and how they're explored is done in earnestness. I've seen some otherwise solid people, like Gene Park, critique it but I think he misunderstands some of its crucial context.

Not the best of last year, but it was well within its right for '21 writing nominations.

monkey6021326d ago

I'm definitely not trying to be the voice of a new generation here. And I'm definitely not against using sensitive themes for setting and plot. But the conclusion Bloober came to with their themes in The Medium was incredibly jarring and poorly crafted.

I'm not going to deep dive into it, it is spoiler territory and I wouldn't want to ruin it for someone who would enjoy it.
But I played 2 games last year that absolutely botched what they set out to achieve in narrative. The Medium was one, The Suicide of Rachel Foster was the other.

coolbeans1326d ago (Edited 1326d ago )

-"But the conclusion Bloober came to with their themes in The Medium was incredibly jarring and poorly crafted."

I guess there's just going to be a hard disagree between us then. It ranks up there with Observer as far as Bloober's storytelling goes and it gave me more optimism about their heavily rumored Silent Hill project/remake. I can understand not wanting to get into details here, but I'm down for an extended convo via PM. It just might take a while for me to respond.

-"But I played 2 games last year that absolutely botched what they set out to achieve in narrative. The Medium was one, The Suicide of Rachel Foster was the other."

It's weird b/c I'm with you on Rachel Foster and its "Legal Lolita" angle too. I'd almost argue there's a yin/yang disparity between them with regards to handling their themes. *MAYBE* not black and white difference per se - Medium has some issues, but something closer to a black and... beige.
