MS never discusses the next year of games during the holiday season. They want buyers to be focused on the "now". They did the same thing last year.

I'm not a fanboy by any means but the Xbox 360 did piss poor this year with quality titles, it might have sold more consoles but honestly it was a big wait till November for Gears of War 2.

But its obvious that exclusives aren't as important as people seem to think. Its good to have them, but despite the quality of most of Sony's exclusive games, they are hardly making a dent for the hardware/software sales for the PS3.

You have to give Sony credit. Their first party games now are miles ahead of the stuff they had in the early PS1 days. But gamers just don't really seem to care about them, or are just slowly buying them over a long period.

True, but the only games I care about are the ones I care about, and quite a few of the Ps3 09 titles look promising to me. Regardless, I still see Alan Wake and Mafia 2 as my most anticipated titles, the latter being multi-plat of course.

Sales have nothing to do with how good a game is, It's an irrelevant factor, only relevant when speaking in terms of sequels and whatnot.

I don't care if Max Payne 2 on PC didn't sell that well, the game was still awesome regardless.

as you said, if first game doesn't sell too well, then a sequel for the great game won't come out. Its important that Games like LBP, Uncharted, and Resistance (plus others) sell well. Otherwise they will be forgotten, missed opportunities.

Many promising franchises have gone missing due to poor sales. This is why we probably won't see a sequel for Psychonauts. Good games need to sell. And whether its due to advertising or whatever, someone needs to do something to get these things out in the hands and minds of gamers.

Honestly to me, it really doesn't matter how fast the games sell on the PS3, as long as the PS3 has a continuous stream of quality exclusives, that's all that matters to me.

The PS3 has plenty a couple of system sellers for 2009, and I'm confident that games like Killzone 2, Final Fantasy XIII in Japan, and Gran Turismo 5 in Europe and Japan will move some serious PS3 hardware. I'm not sure if God of War 3 will move systems or not, but even if it doesn't God of War 3 is a highly anticipated game and it's a very strong title.

Right now at this point, I really don't forsee that many Xbox 360 system sellers because Microsoft has already released Halo 3 and Gears 1 and 2. Sony on the other hand has just released several of the games in their main catalog. I don't see Halo Wars or Halo 3 Recon really being a system seller because Halo fans already have Xbox 360's, GTA4's release didn't really move significant systems for either the PS3 or 360 in April and I highly doubt that GTA4 DLC will move 360 hardware.

If Mass Effect 2 doesn't come to the PS3, then I think that it will be a huge game for the 360 in 09', and the same thing goes for Splinter Cell Conviction and Alan Wake if they both come out in 2009, but other than that, that's pretty much the strongest potential games that the 360 has for 2009 to me.

Uncharted started with ~200k first week, and NOW in it`s 1st year - over 2 mln. copies sold. =)

Motorstorm: Pacific Rift - started with average sales first week(since many games were released in that period), yet in 5 weeks already passed 1 mln. copies.

1. That fact doesn`t ruin my GAMEPLAY.
2. 1 game cheaper to buy than 2, and motorstorm did 1 mln. also in 1 month, though this game is NOT a TPS. =)
3. PS3 owners had more AA(80-95% on GR) exclusives(Resistance 2, Motorstorm: PR, LBP, Valkyria Chronicles, Naruto:UNS) available to buy this Autumn, then x360 owners.

With that out of the way, I don't believe for one minute that Sony is going to run away with 09. Nor do I believe the 360 will run away with it. Things are going to get tighter between the two and with neither console performing horrible in sales or game quality, we all win. There are no console losers this generation whether they be in first, second, or third place. Sale3s are too good all around.

Agreed. 360 had the best lineup suited for the hardcore audience in 08 yet ''everyone'' predicted their, lol, demise during the end of 07. Obviously they will announce another great lineup @ GDC just like they did last year. Wii will be useless just like in 08 while most ps3 games will get delayed although I hope Im wrong. 360 is getting almost as good as the ps2 was

I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing... the only thing that Microsoft has really shown off for 09' is Ninja Blade. The development for Alan Wake has been pretty quiet, and since the new trailer came out, there's been nothing else. Killzone 2 was announced the same year that Alan Wake was, but KZ2 is just 2 months away from release. If I were a 360 owner, I would want to know what games were on the horizon, but now it's like 2009 is just up in the air for the 360 to me. For now, the PS3 has the strongest 09' lineup, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the heck Microsoft is going to do.

I don't think GeoW2 will come to PS3, but to me the biggest sign of trouble for MS was the fact that Peter Moore, the head of Xbox division LEFT THE COMPANY. People who work in corporate world know that you don't just leave a job like that if things are good.

I didn't think it would either but Epic already has it up and running on the PS3 and are bug hunting it as well. Everyone with access to the Unreal Developer's Network has seen the cold hard evidence if they looked in the right place. Hell if you know where to dig on Epic's server you will find files left completely in the wrong place that discuss the PS3 development.

Add to that the fact that a sticky on the internal developer forums says "Do not ask for copies of Gears of War 2 on the PS3. We are only sending out copies of titles that have already shipped to retail."

In 2009 I will have a huge I told you so moment on this website.

But even if this was the case, I doubt they would do a good job porting it. I don't have a 360, so I played the first GeoW on PC and it took two weeks of combing the internet for solutions to get the game to run right, so I don't have confidence that they would do any better on PS3.

No one is saying that this year was not better for Playstation... they did a lot better than they did last year... and the year before that when PS3 owners only had blu-ray movies to watch...

The question is if they did better than the xbox 360 and therefore declaring 2008, "The year of the PS3" as many Sony fans guaranteed it was going to be...

Now, this is not that difficult to determine...

Lots of people in this site would argue that the PS3 had a better line-up in 2008 than the xbox 360... again that can easily be problem by what the mainstream think...

Compare PS3 exclusive to xbox 360 exclusives and see which one sold better... did LBP sold as much as people thought? Did resistance beat Gears 2?

In 2009 Sony have another high profile title, "Kill Zone 2"... let's see how well it does compare to Halo Recon... let's hope it does not do as bad as LBP in terms of sales.

of course the games this year were better........I mean going from 0 to 1 is better. I am sorry...as an owner of all three consoles, I could not help but to make that statement. The ps3 was not doing all that much the year before...so it was really not that hard to improve on it the following year.

Perhaps reviewers should stop giving games scores and instead just list sales figures as the measure of quality!

I really thought I preferred Fallout 3 to Fable 2, but I think I need to go and check the sales figures so I know which one was really the best!

The Xbox has only got 1 ok game Alan Wake which to be honest isnt 100% exclusive its on PC as well so it will be a port to the Xbox. All people who own an Xbox are so stubborn, you go on and on about how good Xbox live is. I dont have any problems with my ps3 online. The reason why people support the Xbox is because you cant afford a PS3. I mean surely anyone in there right mind would rather have a DB7 over a Jag any day?? If you think that Kill Zone 2 will be able to compete against Halo Recon and COD Modern Combat 2... you are in for a 3rd disappointment..

is those who bought an xbox 360 launch consoles did so because they looked into the future and knew they would not be able to own a ps3 a year later. And that despite the 360 having at least a 6 game ($360) attachment rate or higher and paying for live they are unable to afford a ps3? So $399 (premium launch unit) + $360 (6 games) + $80-$100 (Live) does not equal enough to afford a $399 to $499 ps3? Well.........that makes sense to me.

Their first party games are kind of irrelevant now, multiplat is what everyone is doing, I mean COD5 probably outsold Gears Of War 2 by a good margin, and Fallout 3 Fable 2 by a pretty big margin, in either case, GTA4 selling more than all of their first party games combined more than likely, they probably didn't make a year end profit either. So my point being, Nintendo and the 3rd parties won, they don't even really have a Gears Of War 2 of Fable 2 for next year, outside of mayble Halo ODST or w/e, meaning even more losses. Same goes for Sony, they lose even more than Microsoft does.

well i bought the 160gb ps3 to add to my 360 and thats been used the most lately,to many good games out and coming out not to own a ps3 as well,as of exclusives ms has some dlc,gtaiv,tomb raider alan wake lucks promising but so did too human and that was sh*t,sony kicks off with killzone and any 360 owner knows 32 players on line graphics and game play as good as that can,t be done on live period.this is what i,m loving about the ps3 it just gives you a total different gaming experience.example gears 10 player online, resistance 2 60 players online both great games but resistance kills it on line in the fun factor.both consoles have some great games but does any 360 owner ask wheres the big,big games next year coming from.i,m not saying there won,t be,but i,m yet to see them

MSFT took 08 because they had more games I play.

I'm an RPG/Shooter/Adventure gamer only games I played in 08 on my Ps3 was MGS4, Haze (don't ask), and R2 and I'll be picking up White Knight Chronicles if it comes out in 2008. I tried MGO for a few days and hated it, and Resistance 2 got drowned out when I got Gears2.. ended up trading R2 for CoD WAW.

on 360 I played, Fable2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Left 4 Dead, Gears of War 2, Lost Odyssey, The Last Remnant,Tales of Vesperia with 2 of them being games I play online extensively.

But to go on and say that Sony ultimately dominated 2008 over 360 is going in over your head because if there was a vote I'd bet that more people enjoyed the 360 lineup this year.

Isn't that how it should be measured? By the amount of fun and variety?

there are two things that save 360 from falling this year

1. economic crisis
2. price cut

another funny thing is, 360 fans always bring up meta scores to mock PS3 games and when LBP scored better than any 360 exclusives they bring sales issues and call it flop.... LOL PS3 got two AAA this year and 360 only have gears 2 based on meta scores

i wonder if killzone got great scores and sales what will they say to call it flop....

My room mate Sam finally bought a PS3! This is the guy I watch play Gears and L4D- he is very happy to have the PS3 now. He is not baggin on his 360, but he is very pleased with his new blu-ray player, and i got Wipeout HD and a few others off of PSN for him.

See this is the thing- he likes LBP and Res 2, but that's not why he bought it. He has Mirror's Edge for it right now, which he easily could've played on the 360. He got it because it's solid. Yes, he has had some RROD problems, and yes they are so nice in replacing the unit- but he says the PS3 "feels more solid".

And he is of course waiting for KZ2 and eventually GoW3.

The main reason he hadn't already bought the PS3? He didn't have enough money to spare until now, received some private investment returns, now he has both consoles, and is very happy.

3. Nothing Trumps Xbox Live

Nothing trumps XBL YET. PSN gets improved and becomes closer to the standard of XBL with every single update. Who knows? By this time next year, PSN could be better. We can't foresee the future.

2. Continue To Rally Third Parties

Oh. Great I guess? MS is running out of 3rd parties to take. Whilst Sony is focusing on some great 1st party games, Microsoft has been stealing, for lack of a better word, 3rd parties.
Why would any 3rd party bother to be exclusive anymore? MS have shot themselves in the foot a bit here.

1. Microsoft Hasn't Announced Anything

Is this a reason? Did "2 Reasons Why Microsoft Will Prevail in 2009" sound lame or something?
Sony has announced a lot of games, some new franchises, and some continued ones, and 98% look to be excellent. Supposedly, they haven't announced all the games either. Seriously, but unless MS have like, 7 to announce, their chances are looking slim.

I've used XBL for years and finally just got sick of the racist, homophobic 12 year olds who ruin the service. Switching to PSN and saving myself the cash was a bonus. It's kinda like Sony is paying me $50 a year not to use XBL, and I'll happily put that $50 back in my pocket. And what's the main difference between the two (aside from the racists?) - Cross game chat. That's it. And the whole time I had XBL on both the original Xbox and the 360 I never used the cross game chat once. And guess what. Cross game chat is coming to the PSN. I don't miss XBL in the slightest.

And laughed myself to death, came back to life only to continue laughing my ass off to the point where I now have no ass because it was so damn funny to see someone, likely with a straight face when typing it, say that Microsoft clearly won this year because of the only two quality games they released the entire damn year. That's just funny stuff.

This blogger should take the act on the road and maybe make some REAL money doing something more respectable than lying about Microsoft. They don't need you to lie for them, they have trained professionals for that.

Well to me it was;
Xbox 360: Gears 2, Fable 2, L4D

PS3: MGS4, R2, LBP, GT5P. And yea...

I personally thought that Xbox 360 and PS3 both had a great year. Both had their downs (Haze for PS3, and Last Remnant for 360) but overall it was great.

Yea, Gears is freaking awesome but its the only game that I am interested in for the xbox 360 console. I got over Halo when Halo 3 came out because that was kind of disappointing. The only other game that I am interested in is Alan Wake and god knows when the hell that is going to come.

This article will probably start a flame war but w/e. You never know what can happen in 2009. IMO 2008 was a tie between the PS3 and 360 for first place. Quality does not equal quantity. I don't give 2 $#!ts about sales numbers, as long as the game is good, i'll buy. From what we know about ps3's line up in 2009, it's pretty much indestructable if Kratos decides to hop in. MS hasn't really announced anything yet so, as I said anything can happen. Btw! help me. should i get rock band 2 for ps3 or a 360?
