The loading screen is dead, long live the loading screen

From NME: "Thwipping about and taking in the sights of the bustling streets of New York City is one of my favorite pastimes in Marvel’s Spider-Man, but sometimes I just want to get on with the story. When that happens, the best bet is the game’s fast travel mechanic which has Spider-Man ride the subway from one end of the Big Apple to the other."

Not gonna lie, I almost miss loading screens because having no loading screen feels too fast to me lol. Like I've been trained to put the controller down and go get a drink or go pee if I die or fast travel, but now it's like wtf, I feel like I have no time to do that. Spiderman also had a really cool loading screen and now we'll never get to see it again on ps5.

roadkillers1776d ago

Meh, loading screens are still here. Just played Flight Simulator on Series S and GTA5 on PS5. They are still present.

Darkborn1776d ago (Edited 1776d ago )

I havnt played the series S or those games on the ps5, but most ps5 enhanced games I've played have no loading screen, or like a second loading screen if anything. Some of them like pop up the loading screen and then it goes away and your in the game. You can barely even see what the loading screen looks like in time, it's almost like screen tear lol.

Dabigsiebowski1776d ago

GTAV doesn't have an official PS5 release yet.

elazz1776d ago

Played rift apart a month ago and now busy with FF7 remake intergrade. Instant loading is great and can't go back. Hopefully every developer will design their games like that.

MrNinosan1776d ago

GTAV doesn't excist on PS5 fyi

Flight sim is understandable with its loading screens. Its a beast of a game with all the data it has. It would be way worse if it had to load from a traditional hdd.

Popsicle1776d ago (Edited 1776d ago )

Loading in Flight Simulator has more to do with the game reading real time weather patterns and traffic control utilizing your personal online connection speeds than it has to do with the SSD.

Secondly games that are not fully optimized for the PS5/Series X do not take full advantage of the SSD architecture which translates to lower speeds. For example, if I play the PS4 version FF7 Remake on my PS5, I am subject to loading screens. They are much shorter then they were on PS4, but they are still there. However, if I play FF7 Remake Intergrade which is fully optimized for the PS5, the loading screens are gone and the transitions are near instantaneous.

Its tough trying to read the hints/tips on the load screen nowadays with the PS5.

EvertonFC1776d ago

Yep I'm like oh hint press x and it's loaded 😔 kinda miss them 😔 R. I. P hints 😢

EvertonFC1776d ago (Edited 1776d ago )

They were great for a smoke break go grab a beer or sometimes have a slice of pizza or your kebab 😊 (clean hands obviously)
Edit: I've just ordered a kebab now

LordoftheCritics1776d ago (Edited 1776d ago )

You can put your controller down anytime. It's called self control.

Games of the future with absolute zero loading screens will allow varied pacing. You know like in real life, you choose your pace on things. Highly immersive games will get there. Zero loading will forever kill loading. This is it.

Popsicle1776d ago (Edited 1776d ago )

This is very true Lordofthecritics and I need to work on this myself. Since upgrading to a PS5 and Series X I have noticed that my bladder feels as though it is about to burst much more often than it did when I played on last gen consoles. I could darn near do the laundry when I fast travelled in Witcher 3 on the PS4 Pro, but with current gen consoles I am likely to end up with a bladder infection if I do not practice more self control.

"You can put your controller down anytime. It's called self control"
We were being light hearted, have some fun and stop being so serious jeez

Sayai jin1776d ago

Not just loading screens, but with quick resume, you jump right back in the game where you left off. Switching between multiple games on seconds is nice.

I ebjoyed the loading screens for MGS in the PS3.

I_am_Batman1775d ago

Did you know that most games have a pause function?

IamFrasierCrane1775d ago

How dare you point out this helpful feature that’s been present in gaming for decades….

XxINFERNUSxX1776d ago

The ones with the mini games are fun, wouldn't mind if they came back 😀

SDuck1776d ago

And then there's GTAV... F that game's loading screens!

LordoftheCritics1776d ago

GTA online loading screens makes not want to play it.

SDuck1775d ago

Same. Decided to play it again after years last week and now when I think of what game to play, I wonder if I really want to sit through its loading time rather of how much fun I have playing it

Psychotica1776d ago

Imagine if "Notepad" had a loading screen..

LordoftheCritics1776d ago

Imagine if thoughts had loading screens?

Thats how I feel about them. Get rid of them asap.

roadkillers1775d ago

When you ask someone a question and they need to think about it.

LordoftheCritics1775d ago (Edited 1775d ago )

@roadkillers

Now imagine a loading screen while trying to think about it. The world will start feeling like a turn based game.

neutralgamer19921776d ago

I am ready for them to disappear. Was playing one of my favorites games HZD and the load screens were sometimes upwards of a minute or more.
