Honestly they are doing fine without it. Metal Gear Solid could probably fit on a DVD9 with loads of compression, or possibly 2 discs. The real statement should be "Why developers need Blu-Ray". And the answer is... ROYALTY FEES!! Why would they want to pay more money just because their game is big? It could lead to developers saying, "Well...we have about 12 gigs of a game here...lets see what we can cut to shave it down to 8." But with the install base the way it is, I doubt its a concern for most...

As far as RPGs, it's not really a concern. As last gen as it is, multiple disc with RPGs is not really a hassle. Personally, I rather have one disc but I'm not going to complain if it's multiple disc since its a RPG. If it was any other genre, then we can uproar about it.

Blu-ray's biggest advantage is that it's virtually unscratchable. As a Gamestop employee (trust me...I hate their policies and most of the other employees as much as you all do), I see at least twenty defective DVD returns per day. (PS2/GC/Xbox/360) I've yet to see a PS3 disc returned as defective.

The advantage of Blu-ray over DVD is not because you have to change your disc(its really no big deal to change a disc)

Its the fact that those discs cost developers alot of money to buy, and if it stops them from making a game because they cant afford to put it on 2-5 discs then that is why MS desperately needs Blu-ray

Some developers aren't willing to spend that much time making a game just to have it not make any money, due to the fact that they spent to much money on several DVD discs instead of spending less money on a single Blu-ray disc.

How come it's always the Japanese RPGs that need to use multiple discs? Large games like Fallout 3, Oblivion, Mass Effect, GTA IV etc all fit on one disc.

It's obvious they'll need something different next gen, but the 360 has been out more than 3 years and it's still doing fine with DVD9.

This just means the game(s) come on multiple disks. No big deal. Blu-ray isn't the see all be all and neither was HD-DVD. Blu-ray hasn't automatically made all ps3 games better than those on the xbox. And DVD hasn't made all xbox360 games inferior to ps3 games.

But it seems that the main people that b!tch about it dont really play on the 360. Blu-ray is a nice feature to have and it does give the ps3 +1 on the 360 just because its there, but gamewise.......

-Dent/scratch resistant. Really hard to damage the disc without forcefully cracking it in two. I have yet to come across a defective BD disc at my job(GStop)+1
-has a vastly superior storage capability then DVD does +1
-Costs more then DVD does(-1)
-Graphics are nothing but data. THe more uncompressed data you have the better the graphics, at least in theory.(+1)
-BluRay is the forscene successor to the format throne, making it the defacto medium to be using. PS3 will already have the tech and not need to be upgraded in a few years as does it's counterpart.(+1)

DVD on the other hand...
-Cheaper then BD Discs(+1)
-Smaller capacity(-1)
-Easily Damaged(-1)
-DVD is also on the out(-1)

BD Discs= +2
DVD Discs=-2

And someone earlier stated that DVD is better becuase PS3 has installs due to the Bluray. I would like to point out that not all games for PS3 require installs. Only some do.First party games have done well at staying away from them, and quite often show that they can produce better results then most.Killzone 2 is a testament to that. A game that requires no install at all, even with it's unmatched level of graphical prowess.

The truth is that there is nothing wrong with swapping discs. It only becomes an issue when it becomes excessive. How many discs are tolerable for a game that is barely even 40hrs long(LO)? With the level of data needed to make a presentable game, DVDs fill up in no time. When RPGs like FFVII were on multiple discs it was ok. In those games they had 80+ hr stories and would have open worlds to fully explore with vehicles or on foot, packed with TONS of extra content. With RPGs today you are lucky to get ONE mini game. This is all do to space limitations. BD is the path to getting back to old RPG roots where they would truly cram these discs with as much content as possible giving you the best experience possible.

I'm all for Sony, but I just don't get why (other than costs) Microsoft would refuse to utilize HD DVD drives in their units even if the format were to fail, which it may not have had Microsoft had included it in their console... they wouldn't be in this situation. That, or they really do plan on releasing another console soon.

Let's see what Microsoft choices where...

A) Release the xbox 360 1 year before the PS3 comes out costing $200+ less than the PS3... and manage to maintain a lead for the PS3 even 3 years after... having a fast drive that and not requiring mandatory installs but having to release 1% of the games in multiple discs...

B) Release the xbox 360 1 year later and try to compete against the PS3 at the same price or more expensive... have the slowest blu-ray player that will require mandatory installs... and pay Sony royalties for blu-ray....

This argument is just stupid... it's just designed for PS3 fans to feel better about their purchase... it's common sense... many xbox 360 have lots of games... and they see themselves swapping discs to play other games anyways... by the time a xbox 360 gamer is asked to insert disc 2 on a game like Infinite Undiscovery... he probably already swap the disc to play gears, cod, fable, mass effect and the list goes on and on... so, what the big difference? Not to mention that unlike the PS3 disc swapping only takes 20 seconds over mandatory installs...

Here we have anti-xbox 360 calling disc swapping obsolete and last gen... but calling Install next gen! haha! when game installs are so 1980 and PC like... what people always loved about console gaming was the fact that one can put the game and play it.. without having to worry about the hardware or installing... but now thanks to the so call PS3 mandatory install... gamers have to worry about if their hard drive have enough room to handle the install...

The other day I went to Gamestop and I asked if I can try Metal Gear for the PS3... you know like lots of people that like to try a game before they buy it... the guy told me... sorry we can't that game require installs... and it would take too long... do you call that NEXT GEN? RPG games are linear... this is why Final Fantasy and Metal Gear on the PS1 was never a problem.... people don't care..

Now if blu-ray is still around... Next Gen... the xbox 720 may bring a blu-ray player... but not the cripple slow @$$ blu-ray prototype player that requires mandatory install the PS3 has... but one that it's affordable for the developers and consumer and fast... one that will benefit from it's space capacity without forcing developers to compensate with mandatory installs...

Also, here we are talking about the few games that require multiple discs... but what about all those multiplatform games that comes in 1 DVD on the xbox 360 but that require mandatory installs on the PS3... so much for blu-ray space ehh?

The 360 is a great console, and using multiple disks is fine WHEN POSSIBLE. This is where the problem lies. In video games, there is data that is dependant on other data. This is the reason some genres aren't possible on multiple disks. For example SC4 could never be made on a multiple CD format. Every character, arena, item, piece of clothing, and weapon depends on eachother being accessible for any given match. Sports games are the same way. In racing games, if the car and track data exceed the limits of a format, it can't be made on said format. Open world games are a little different. While they are possible, having multiple disks for this type of game would be a huge pain in the a$$. As you would have to switch disks whenever you feel the urge to explore certain areas. It's not just a simple matter of disk swapping convenience. It's the same reason larger game storage has been a huge asset to consoles throughout history. But since 360 is the first console in history NOT to upgrade storage, all history and logic takes a backseat to "IT ONLY TAKES 5 SECONDS TO SWAP A DISK". Go figure.

Well.. i don't see the "big" problem here, since lot of great games (in the past too) had more than 1 CD/DVD. I agree it's nicer if you have only 1 and you don't need to swap, but i don't think that ppl die if they swap a disk or so.

Star Ocean 3 on PS2 was 2 Dual Later DVD which means more then what X360 DVD can hold.

Anway SO3 wasn't that good.

Sony fans want MS to adopt Blu-ray so bad to keep it from sinking. Little history lesson, game consoles arn't confined to one format like movies. Just think about all consoles in the past that use it's own format. MS, Nintendo and Sony are the ones who print and ship whatever format they use, so... they can use whatever they want. Got news for you PS3 fans, nothing is going to save Blu, it will be burried next to HD DVD soon enough.

So far it's only rpgs. Last Remnant, Lost Oddyssey and SO are the only games of which I am aware.

The amount of discs isn't the issue. Personally I'm fine with playing games on more than one disc. But as a number of other people have already pointed out it's going to be a problem with open world games. Rockstar have already complained because they had to cut down the size of the city in GTA 4.

Blu-ray's storage and disagree all you want Isn't as needed as you guys want to believe. It would be nice to see what games would be like with both companies using it, but lets look at some facts here. The majority of multi disk games are RPGs, and games like Oblivion and Fall out 3 are long, beautiful, and fit on a DVD9. Don't get me wrong Blu ray is great and a large media formate is needed, but not so much needed to enjoy gaming at this time. I would say Blu ray is needed for heavy media storage such as cut scenes and crisp sound tracks. But I believe you can have a large grand theft auto on a dvd9. With games like Oblivion and Fall out 3 having a large amount of content and mini missions across a large world why couldn't they?

I still think MGS 4 can fit on a dvd9. The game was flooded with cut scenes, more then what I liked.
There were even scenes that really had no purpose but to be eye candy. like for example, the introduction of MGS4 where you can channel surf... was that really needed, or the Missions Briefings, or the long explanations of each boss, how about the wedding scene?

My argument is not to attack MGS4 its to show you guys that yes Blu-ray is a great storage media, but until every game relies on the formate whole heartedly, don't expect to see full bluray adoption until the next consoles are released, and by that time bluray may not be the formate of choice. There are some large storage media's that are quietly being released that are larger then what a bluray can hold.

27.1- I don't think you understand where I a m coming from, a side the cut scenes and sound tracks of a game blu ray hasn't really enhanced anything but brought us larger media cut scenes, and the will to sit on our butts with out changing a disk. The length of the game is still equal to that of a dvd9, but once you factory in the media cut scenes and sound tracks with little to no compression, then a blu ray disk is needed. Why are games such as Oblivion longer and larger then a lot of games produced exclusively on a Blu-ray? This alone proves that Blu ray is not as needed as every thinks. It's nice to have , but isn't a must to enjoy gaming. That is my point, as far as the mona lisa goes, he is not being limited by shades of color, but merely on the space provided. Yes he can have a larger canvas to produce the mona lisa, but does he really need a larger canvas to produce a master piece is the question,

So an RPG was released that requires multiple discs? The horror! That's never happened before! And to think, people will have to get up off of the sofa after several hours of gameplay to change a disc. That's just intolerable.

But seriously, it's a non-issue. It's only PS3 owners who are complaining, and they'll never have to do it anyway. I've never heard of someone wanting to get rid of their 360 because they might have to change discs after playing 10 or more hours of an RPG. I don't even know why anyone even bothers to complain about it.

I hope XB3 comes with a CD drive. Cause reading the comments here, the Xmens love their exercise. More the disc, more the exercise.

Wow not only does the 360 get better games but there also much bigger. the ps3 boys must be sooo jealous.

Changing discs takes easily less time than some of the installs for PS3 games but tbh I spend that time checking out the controls in the game manual and flicking through that real quick.

Personally, I don't mind the installs as I'm sure a lot of people don't mind switching discs but I'd prefer the installs simply because I couldn't be bothered to get up and change discs every now and again unless I'm going to play a different game.

That's just me though, changing discs probably won't bother about 95% of 360 gamers so who really cares.

Microsoft should have put another disc format in the 360 initially, but HD-DVD and it's expensive blu laser would not have been good. A special, proprietary format based on the red-laser DVD spec would probably have worked out fine for the most part. Adding even just one more data layer to the discs would have given developers much more space to work with.

The second thing Microsoft should do (and still can) is open up the possibility for better storage options on the 360. Nobody is going to pick up a 120 gig hard drive from them when they cost almost as much as a new arcade 360 unit. Don't listen to any phony bologna story about why they cost so much, there is only one reason for that and it is profit. Still, they should allow users to plug in a USB drive of their choice in order to allow for larger game installations. That would be helpful.

To be on the fair side of things, there weren't alot of games on the consoles of the past that used multiple discs, but we can't ignore the fact that past gen gaming wasn't in HD. The disc space is only limited because the higher resolution of today's games eat up disc capacity. It has nothing to do with the ignorant comments that have come from some in the industry who claim that a blu-ray disc would make games look better. It's a storage medium for Pete's sake and not expandle or upgradeable. I personally don't mind switching discs at all. It always gave me a feeling of opening up a new book and craving for more. I also get a sense of understanding how long the game may be in length. No?

The reason why the sony playstation 2 was so successful is because it had a variety of games, many rpgs, many first person shooters, many platform games, many puzzles a lot of variety. The PS3 is full of third party multiplatform games, mainly shooters, a few excellent action adventure games which i do enjoy and like two highly anticipated RPGS exclusive to the system. White knight story and final fantasy versus. The Ps3 is more of an multi media hub, with an excellent blu ray player and internet browsing and a 3d social networking program... no matter how you look at it, its fighting its hardest, and i own one because Sony's hardware is reliable and you get more for your buck.
I own a 360, because it is the very remminansce of the sony playstation 2 which was loaded with hundreds of exclusives a great community and so many variety of games. I don't like the way they do buisness but it is very effective in their exclusives and colorful titles. Halo 3 and Gears of War are now gaming staples. The 360 is a gaming system...all around it is not a multi media hub and the hardware is a bit outdated.. but it offers a lot for gamers who enjoy playing games. The thing about the multiple disc swaps is not really a bad thing, it may be a bit of an headache for some, but you need to take breaks through video games every once in a while anyway. It would have been awesome if microsoft had implemented the HD DVD drive to play video games on HD DVD disc... that would have been a key selling point on the 360, with specific HD DVD compatible games and one just for DVD-9. It would have worked... but 360 offers what the ps2 did, great games, variety and a hard core following...

Its simple, if a game is in development to got to multi plat, and they notice that it might require one more dvd, and they dont think it would be a smart move to got for that extra dvd then there probably just going to dumb down the game, JRPG are big games and they get bigger just look at the day of the PSone were the first RPG were in 1 - 2 disk, then the next generation were in 2 - 3 but by the end on the PSone era most game were 3 - 4 and most likely 4. Does anyone remember the problem ID software is having with RAGE, i told reporters back at E3 that they have to work around the limitations of 360 for all versions.

making a game on a blu ray will get cheaper as time goes while yeas putting games on DVD will always be cheaper at one point it will be more costly to put a game in multiple dvd then one Blu ray, so u cant tell me that if a developer sees that they have to add one more dvd to its game, i dont see them asking their developers to make the game longer, i see then as cutting parts of the game to fit is in the lowest amount of dvd, companies like square are all about the money.

hahah talk about storage. For ps3 its like a swimming pool with a 3" drain hole. The 50Gb BD wont help churn out better graphics on the pathetic 256mb of GPU ram. Buu but teh cell also has 256mb i kn nnn nn know. These japs sure dont know how to compress data. Most JPRGS are way overboard on cutscenes than actual gameplay ala Movie Gear Sold4. I rather smaller cutscenes and heavier action ala Gears2. Man that game was huge, took me forever to finish it. I dont want anything longer than 10-12 hours of gameplay.

But GTA4 is already inferior on ps3.
It runs at sub Hi-Def 640p instead of 720p of the xbox360 version and it has zero AA instead of 2xAA of the 360 version (not to mention the worst framerate on ps3).

As far as cost goes, DVD's cost practically nothing...and no, they dont have to pay for DVD licensing on each DVD; BR's cost much more. There is no refuting that fact.

As someone pointed out earlier, games on PS3 BR take more space....why is The Darkness 18GB, while the SAME EXACT GAME fits just fine on DVD9? Before you start praising the virtues of PS3, ask yourself (or Sony) why a game like Sigma, that is just a HD redux of an Xbox game, is over 11GB? While you can DL the same game on LIVE and its MUCH smaller?

This reminds me of the old days when playing FF and they were 3 to 4 disc long.

I remember not long ago I red that 3 dvds would cost exactelly the same price of 1 bluray disc.
So I wonder how funny it would be IF the Final Fantasy XIII uses 4 dvds on the xbox360 and because of that it would be more expensive then the 1 blu-ray disc version of the game for the PS3.
