What is Sony's philosophy on console generations?

Sony made the right decision by releasing the God of War sequel on PS4, but conveyed in the wrong way.

darthv721823d ago (Edited 1823d ago )

PS5 is still the generational leap we come to expect. But instead of the obvious (resolution and graphics) we get much improved audio, performance, control and even more attention to detail that makes up the total package. The PS5 games are going to push the hardware above what the PS4 versions can do. And the PS4 is getting some of of the best outgoing games it will ever have.

medman1823d ago (Edited 1823d ago )

Yeah. Right. What about improved AI, larger environments, new gameplay design? I guess us suckers will have to make do with last gen game development on new hardware. Makes perfect sense. Talk about settling for less. Wake up. Games designed to be played on the ps4 are not leading to any kind of innovation on ps5. Period. End of story.

Paleblood1823d ago

This is very simple. We are in a world pandemic. The moment Sony saw that their user base can't move to the PS5 due to all the production problems in this pandemic, was the moment they understood they cannot abandon people on PS4.

For me, what Sony is doing is right thing. We as gamers only care about getting a next Gen game. Sony as a company has to care about all their users in PS4 and PS5.

zumlauf141823d ago (Edited 1823d ago )

uh no. These cross gen games were in development on the prev gen consoles before the pandemic. Guerilla for example just came out stating "a lot of the development on HFW was done ON the ps4". You're going to say they just jumped back onto the ps4 mid development a year ago? No. Same goes for Miles Morales.

NeoGamer2321823d ago

That is BS.

They didn't just wake up one morning, look at the situation and say, "Let's ship this on PS4 as well". If they were only making a PS5 version, logically it would've only been capable on PS5.

And you can't take a game mid way through development targeted to a next gen platform fully and target it to an older platform. That is just not possible unless you dumb down the game.

They had this plan all along. They were just confusing in their marketing. I don't know why anyone is shocked at this. It is obvious that for the first couple years this gen that games would target previous platforms as well. Sony just was not clear in their marketing here.

medman1823d ago

There was nothing "obvious" that the "first couple years this gen would target previous platforms". Quite the contrary....every single previous Sony console took a different tact, not to mention Sony talking heads saying their belief in console generations differed from the approach of other companies. This is new for Sony, and it's disgustingly disappointing.

medman1823d ago

My bad I responded to wrong article wrong comment. Apologies.

Looks like they're not into generations anymore. PS5 is just another PS4

Right now I am more excited to see some gameplay of the Remake Trilogy than the sequel.

rlow198d ago

Question is? Is the remake going to be 100% faithful to the original, or will they cut out some of more controversial parts? Aka. Sex scenes? It’ll be interesting

repsahj98d ago

I agree. That is why I am excited to see the gameplay.

-Foxtrot98d ago

I'm really not fussed if we don't see Atreus again to be honest

Kratos should be the main focus at the end of the day, I thought the Atreus sections in Ragnarök were pretty boring, he's just not that interesting on his own.

Shane Kim98d ago

I don't get it either why they have to shoehorn hos "son" into the story. Just give us Kratos.

Cacabunga98d ago

What i cannot think of is Sony closing this studio as well at some point. They are really on a terrible streak towards downfall…

Inverno98d ago

They did Atreus dirty in Ragnarok. His design doesn't match at all the way he behaved and his personality. They didn't write him to come into his own, instead they wrote him as an obnoxious modern day teenager, acting out and being cringe all the way through. I was hoping to see him become Loki but nope.

Pyrofire9598d ago

I think I'd be cool with a mid budget Atreus game but my loyalty is with Kratos for sure. Looking forward to seeing what the remakes are more than anything atm. But also I'm still mad at Playstation over Bluepoint

Inverno97d ago

GOW has the potential to be spinoff'd into games about other gods. A game about Atreus becoming Loki with a trickster mechanic where the story changes depending on your method of tricking other characters would be hella interesting. More so if they bring Atreus to whatever other patheon they might have planned for Kratos. Actually would be a missed opportunity if they don't make Atreus in a reoccurring character in future games. He could easily be the Patches of the GOW franchise.

No hints at interesting gameplay, though.

They saved "Mau" for their next live-service spin-off game.

yeah, they're gonna overprice it so only 0.5% of the playerbase can buy it. The spiderman packs cost like 650 for 12 packs or something, on top of spiderman not fitting into mtg at all. Most of current PS characters don't fit either.
