PS5 Is Reportedly Getting a New Model (11XX) With Minor Changes

Sony might be working on a new model for the PS5 bumping the version from the 10XX series to 11XX. This usually leads to minor changes.

Even cheaper to produce? Sony are doing it really good this gen. It is incredible that they have a totally new controller with extra and expensive features, a cooling design expensive and delicate and an original architecture... but they are making a benefit with every console sold, while competition declared they sell at a lost, with a more standard architecture, propietary expansions and nearly the same overpriced controller.

darthv721821d ago

Im thinking easier to produce. Cheaper could also be a byproduct of that but right now they are having production issues. So a revision that improves the mfg process to help them pump out faster is more likely.

Having already best part of 10 million I’m pretty certain they cut better deals for the parts when bulk buying them in the 10-20 millions as they no doubt have to make as many as they can as quick as they can. You get discount on 6 cans of coke they’ll get massive discount on 5 million nuts bolts ssd’d etc, They don’t buy the parts for retail prices off amazon 😑🤣😜✌&# 127995;

Silicone chip shortage the same on Xbox .

KillBill1820d ago

Except they have not addressed main issues of manufacturing issues. You can't increase production if you don't change the main reason production has came to a crashing halt across all tech.

They're trying to just 6nm parts which will slightly help at first, but the shortage will last until a lot of devices get off 7nm and move to 5nm. That being said it'll be better for the PS5, because it will help keep it slightly cooler, and slighty more power-efficient, while also making production flow improve a bit.

StoneyYoshi1821d ago (Edited 1821d ago )

The shortage doesn't have anything to do with the size of the node. Regardless of the size, silicon is where the shortage lies and wont change by going to a smaller node.

ABizzel11821d ago (Edited 1821d ago )

@FlakyGoose

You're incorrect and only looking at their evolutionary roadmap, not their refresh. Yes, 5nm is the completely new node after 7nm, which is already out in mobile and coming to more platforms starting next year. But 6nm is the refresh of 7nm which is already in production for 7nm updates across the industry launching later this year. If a PS5 slim / updated system is coming out in 2022, it's using the 6nm fabrication node.

ABizzel11821d ago

The shortage has everything to do with the availability of the node, not the size. The problem is 5nm isn't being massed produced for the entire industry just yet, only mobile really and Apple / Snapdragon has scopped up the vast majority.

That leaves the vast majority of the industry stuck on the 7nm processing node from mobile, tablets, computers, CPUs, GPUs, cars, consoles, literally almost every major electronic except for NVIDIA (8nm) and Intel (14nm++++++) are on 7nm which is one of the 3 major causes of the shortages.

This is why NVIDIA re-released some RTX 2000 GPUs, to avoid having to deal with competing in bidding wars for 7nm fabrication, and why they're skipping it altogether and going straight to 5nm. When the node split happens 1/3 of the shortage issue will be somewhat alleviated, but that will bring a few / several million consoles into the market each year which is better than where we currently are.

Why are you hung up on the node availability? The reason the nodes availability is low is because of the silicon shortage. Silicon is the base material needed for semiconductor manufacturing. If there's no silicon available then there is no node to make.

"That leaves the vast majority of the industry stuck on the 7nm processing node from mobile, tablets, computers, CPUs, GPUs, cars, consoles, literally almost every major electronic except for NVIDIA (8nm) and Intel (14nm++++++) are on 7nm which is one of the 3 major causes of the shortages."

Again, regardless of it being 7,6,or even 5nm, they all require silicon wafers to be created first which is where the supply VS demand issue is coming from. About three-quarters of the world's total semiconductor manufacturing capacity comes from China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. And virtually all of the world's advanced semiconductor manufacturing capacity in nodes below ten nanometers is located in South Korea and Taiwan. Companies like Apple, Nvidia, AMD, and a huge range of other companies, are dependent on Samsung and TSMC's manufacturing capacity. And now, there is not enough capacity due to supply VS demand.

While you are correct that some manufacturers switching to different node options will help in regards to how many companies are ordering a specific node and could help with how often products using different node sizes are restocked on store shelves, but it wont make a difference in the silicon shortage because the same material demand is there regardless of what node size is being used. We wont see a substantial difference in the shortages until one of two things happens. Either demand goes down, or more semiconductor factories are built to meet the demand which is in the works by multiple manufacturers.

Intel is a integrated device manufacturer, meaning they rely on themselves for their supply for manufacturing and nobody else which is why we aren't seeing a shortage from them on top of the demand not being as high as AMD's CPU's

dcbronco1820d ago (Edited 1820d ago )

Yoshi when they say a silicon shortage I'm pretty sure they're using the word silicon as a catchall phrase for chips. They don't mean a shortage of wafers. And actually switching the node would make a difference if it were a shortage of actual silicon because smaller nodes allow for more chips for the same size wafer. It's like breaking down a dollar into nickels and dimes. You'd get 10 dimes from one dollar (10nm) but 20 nickels (5nm) from the same dollar. Apple is the cause of a huge part of it as well as moving away from Chinese fans through sanctions.

What are you talking about?... I swear this site gets worse in the comments by the day...

From the article:
“ So far, the new component appears to be Bluetooth, but as mentioned, these changes are minor and hardly have an impact on the overall hardware so don’t consider this an upgraded system.”

Where are you taking anything about reduced price? let alone anything about everything else you mentioned.

Also, PS5 is also sold at a loss, its a pretty standard move on Sony’s side too, otherwise its impossible to pack that much power in that price range.

As for Xbox being “standard” architecture and Sony being “custom”....please stop... they are both practically identical and each has their own (and not that many) custom things

"As for Xbox being “standard” architecture and Sony being “custom”....please stop... they are both practically identical and each has their own (and not that many) custom things"

I think they meant more in terms of XSX using the standard RDNA2 architecture made by AMD while Sony customized most of its graphics architecture to suit their own needs. Thats why we kept hearing the news about XSX using full RDNA2 and PS5 only being "RDNA 1.5" even though thats not the case for PS5.

King_Noctis1820d ago (Edited 1820d ago )

Fully agree. This place is getting worse and worse each day. At least the mods are finally doing something about it.

Sony said the ps5 is going to break even in June and start making profit shortly after, everything else I agree with though.

Geez, get off your knees for a change. Your post reads like it's a floundering love letter from a deranged groupie to their favorite band.

I want to start by saying, wow what a fanboy.
Sony is redesigning the PlayStation to make it easier / cheaper to produce. But regardless there's still a worldwide semiconductor shortage.

KillBill1820d ago

What are you talking about? Sony has already reported they are taking a loss on each console sold to date and that won't change until much later.

foker1820d ago

I am sure PlayStation gets hardware cheaper than MS,.. They are expected to sell at least 100M or at least double what Xbox is expected to sell.

Sounds like the internal redesign that was discussed with the new 6nm chips.

Hopefully the semi-conductor shortage ends soon, so I can actually buy one

ABizzel11821d ago

It won't end until late 2022, when more products move to 5nm, and the current 7nm products splti between 7nm and 6nm.

KillBill1820d ago

Exactly... this news of change does absolutely nothing to address the real reason why production has came to a near halt across the board. Unless they have figured out how to suddenly produce semi-conductors out of thin air then they have done nothing to increase manufacturing. It is still dead in the water like all tech looking for the same thing.

rakentaja1821d ago (Edited 1821d ago )

Something to do with the SSD cooling. I bet the location of the SSD has changed in the new model or at least redesigned.
