the ps3 wont need to go future proof with their next system because they have already incorporated the bluray into their system and it will be super cheap by then, i am pretty sure bluray will last as long as dvd so the ps4 will most definitely have bluray. so the only thing they will need to add would be to upgrade the cell/ram/gpu and stuff and the extras like BC and stuff and then they are good. IMO though since im not an expert in any of these fields.

If Sony continues to use the technology of the Cell, it should benefit a lot in the PS4. Having the same architecture but with more SPU's along with its PPU's will ease the development of the games. PS3 engines could be ported and optimized easily.

With a Cell equipped PS4, it could possibly support backwards compatibility of all PS3 games as well. I can't possibly imagine a PS4 with a PS3 Cell/RSX as a separate component on the PS4 motherboard. Too cost effective, much like what happened in the original 20GB and 60GB models. They would rather keep the architecture the same next time around.

Sony is not going to win this generation.Simple as that.

I think Sony should spend less on R&D, and just beef up the specs they have. Improve the BD drive speed, the bandwidth and bus speeds, and the amount of ram.

Put things like the OS and upscaling onto its own separate cache so it doesn't take away from developers. Focus on ONE SKU so consumers aren't confused, but keep the open ended nature (HDD swapping, Bluetooth headsets, etc).

They need to spend next gen simply regaining market share, and not taking their brand name for granted. I expect the PS3, 360, and Wii to survive just fine. I have a feeling the PS4 and the 720, as well as the Wii 2, will be a heated battle.

Sony is aiming for a 10 year lifecycle with the PS3 and as a result they future proofed it to last ten years hence the initally price tag.PS3 will be revelent much longer than previous Sony consoles as not only because of the tech but also firmware updates.

Look guys. So far Sony is averaging around 9 million PS3 at its weakest period (launch period). If the PS3 is averaging around 9 million a year with 399 intially 599. PS3 at 299 and eventfully 199 with GOW3 GT5, FF13vs,jak, Zipper Socom, KZ3, R3, Uncharted 3 etc will definitely put this average to more than 10 million PS3 a year.

Now with an average of at least 10 million a year in 10 years the PS3 will cross the 100 million mark when all is said and done. On top of this the PS3 have won the format war for Sony.

The wii and x360 definitely won't last 10 years especailly when Blu ray is mainstream and HD is the standard. This is the cost of just thinking short term gain. PS3 is the only console that can last ten years and is set to benefit in the long run with consistent sales in latter years. Look at the PS2 as evidence.

I still don't get why people say the console war is over when there are only 35% of last gen gamers have migrated. There was a report earlier that stated that by 2012 there will be about 194 million consoles in homes which is logical. Last gen was about 170 million.

Myself much like Sev wanted the bells a whistles BC, Blu-Ray, the Cell, USB Ports, card readers, and wi-fi built in. All of these things have greatly enriched my entertainment level over the past 2 years.

Yes the price point is hurting potential PS3 sales, anyone can see that, but on the same note tech always gets cheaper and as it dose prices go down.

I really do think that as titles like METAL GEAR SOLID 4, LITTLE BIG PLANET, GRAN TURISMO, and KILLZONE 2 continue to push the envelope in the gaming industry and as the PS3 reaches its full development level it will reign supreme this gen as far as quality not only in the hardware but also in the software and online services areas.

The price will go down over time, and with the everything else stacking up in the PS3's favor it will sell more year over year. Hell, even with a higher price point a coming out a year later it has been keeping pace with the 360's sales world wide. Even most of this year in the U.S; that says a lot. Lets just wait and see what happens over the next 3-5 years with the market share, I think Sony may surprise us all.

I don't think there is ever going to be a clear winner of a generation again. Sony won the last 2 generations because it outsold it's competitors by over 100 million. I just don't see the gap between the Wii, PS3, and 360 getting that large.

i will most certainly be staying with Sony next gen. That is if they stay true to their stand for quality, value, and incredible games line-up that they have this gen. I started into gaming with the PS1, fell in love with franchises like Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, and Twisted Metal, and now I am in love with some of sony's newest franchises all over again: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, LittleBigPlanet, and Resistance. To me Sony's machine just has the complete package that NO other company's system has: Quality, greatest and most plentiful exclusives, and a high standard in every way. Keep it up Sony! I think it's funny how everyone doubts Sony the first few years. This happened with the PS1 & the PS2. It took the PS2 4 years to get good games and have the popularity it did. The same happened with the PS1. Even this gen with the 360 there were people saying that the 360 literally had nothing good to play when it released in the first year or so. There were even comics about how people bought the 360 just to play Halo 2 on it. Now that the 360 has been out a few more years it has good games (though a lot of those are available on the PC anyways which really only leaves them with mediocre exclusives at this point).

But anyways, all this hate towards Sony & the PS3 will die out they save up enough money to actually buy one (you may have to give it a while cause the people who got a 360 more than likely got it as a gift for their parents and they probably won't buy them another console until about a year from now).

My assessment:

They've already laid the groundwork for a successful console. Excellent customer support, pricey hardware, and the backing of a premium optical disc format (once again). But where their previous two consoles didn't overly hype the disc format, this time they have.

So in order for them to make PS4 succeed, they need PS3 to provide an excellent launchpad for their future expansion.

I think Sony thought SO much into the future with PS3 that they actually hampered its progress, since its main competitor the x360 continues to match up visually, pixel for pixel game for game.

They haven't made a superior "console", but they HAVE made a superior "platform". I think this is where both companies differ. Sony wants to extend the PS3 architecture into PS4, whereas x3 (or x720) will be an entirely different console than x360.

Sony started a platform-wide initiative that would provide them with enough experience NOW to be able to TRULY deliver LATER. Question is, how many of us are going to be waiting for that to start kicking in? I'm happy with my x360 because it delivers NOW.

What makes a console successful or the most successful...? There is more than one way to judge this. For example, Microsoft recently celebrated sales higher than Sony in Europe. While at the same time Sony announced that they still lead Microsoft.

So the F what!!! Does any of you realize that this is all PR. The fact is that the success of one console doesn't impact the success of the other. More Xboxes sold doesn't mean less PS3s sold. NPD data shows this glaringly, but still fanboys run around like Chicken Little saying '360 is teh doomed'! You are the only reason Sony or Xbox does this. It is advertising, because they know how such goofy, nerdy, stupid fanboys you are.

At the end of the day, Sony and Microsoft are looking at their profit margins irrespective of what the other competitor is doing or saying. So we should do the same, make our decision regardless of what some fanboy says or does. There are as many ways to judge a successful console as there are gamers.

OK, the Wii 'won' this generation because it sells the most (as a next gen version of a board game rather than a console). Its games sucks, but it is very innovative and family/party friendly.

XBox 360s were rushed out with major problems to get a jump on PS3, so they sell more. But the gamers lose if they have a RROD. Still they have a larger library and some nice titles due to Microsoft's head start.

The PS3 debuted with a ridiculous price point that still was at a loss to the company. We've yet to see if the price paid (both for Sony and us gamers) was worth it, but it is beginning to show promise although quite late in the game.

You have three different options as a gamer:
-a system without the games we love
-a system notorious for technical problems
-a system that is high on promises and price point

Anyway you are taking a gamble, but you have to ask what wins you over. Few of Nintendo's titles have ever interested me. XBox's RROD has eliminated them until I hear differently - maybe Jasper is it. I've come to expect Sony's overpromising and underdelivering before the XBox was out.

this is far from over for Sony. the 360 is maxed out. the PS3 still has 3 good years left atleast, if this new 400gb disc picks up then you may see and upgraded PS3 with a faster BD drive in 1.5/2 yrs or even less. the upgradable hdd gives the console of a new level of gaming capability combined with the increase of HDD size( i got a 120 in mine with a 1TB USB hooked in).

MS has to come out with their next console in 2 years time(max) to continue to compete with the PS3.

Wii is on its way out..never was a nex-gen console. its for kids and Nintendo knew that when they built it. kids under 12 love the Wii(yes they picked up a small adult following)

so the PS3 will be around for a while and this war will end with the release of the next Xbox(when 360 owners are in the corner screaming not another console). Which incidentally will have to contain some form of upgradability(MS will never go for that) and a larger format optical media(BD--MS wont go for that either)

Now that Jim Ryan is gone just need to remove Herman Hulst from his position! And maybe give Shuhei the position he deserved.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

So now there's certifiable proof that Ryan was in fact "fired", as opposed to when it was first announced that he "retired", in order to save face.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
