Though Smelter has its shortcomings, it's fun and funny while it lasts.

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "Even with a few random bugs, it's difficult to think poorly of Smelter. It's a handsome game with an interesting mythology, a rocking soundtrack, and a fun mix of action-platforming and real-time tower defense. There are some small problems — overlong stages, tedious twin-stick segments, a late-game difficulty spike, and a couple of missed narrative opportunities — but overall this is an enjoyable homage to classics like ActRaiser and Mega Man X."

TSA writes: Smelter is aptly named, as this is a video game that smelts together two very different video game genres. Metroidvania and Real Time Strategy have been nailed together to try and create something entirely new and fresh. The thing is, while fusing together random things sometimes creates something new and incredible, other times you inadvertently end up with a Frankenstein’s Monster-like abomination. Sadly it’s the latter that has occurred with X PLUS Company Limited’s latest. Best grab the flaming torch and pitchforks for this review.

Dave writes: "If you’ve played SNES classic Actraiser, you will know it’s possible, but it doesn’t stop it being a strange mix: Smelter is a mash-up of action-platforming, not too dissimilar from a Metroid or Castlevania, and a simple real-time strategy game. You know, like Starcraft. If you’re intrigued, Smelter is out now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Switch and PC."
