Nier Replicant's Technical Shortcomings

TechRaptor writes, "Nier Replicant Ver. 1.22 fixes some of the original's faults while radically overhauling its visuals. Despite the massive upgrade, it still doesn't look great, which is to be expected for a project of this scope."

I agree with this. When i saw the minimum resolution on ps4 Pro i was shocked. But i still purchased it due to how great Automata was. I support these developers, but they need to up their technical proficiency.

It’s not a remake but more than a remaster . It’s fine really for what it is . I love his games , Drakengard and Nier series are awesome and weird and I will support them . It’s beautiful to me . Resolution and FPS are over focused right and it’s getting sad really when people are more concerned about the specs than the game itself. I’m sure his budget was small as Nier didn’t sell much the first time around. Automata did but this was supposed to only be a remaster to start. I do think they will tweak it over time though with some patches

Darkwatchman1825d ago (Edited 1825d ago )

The fact that it’s not a remake that looks cutting edge only is more reason it should be running at higher resolutions as it’s pushing less demanding technology and yet it runs at lower resolutions on these consoles than most 8th-gen only games. Make it make sense.

Also, no one is more focused about FPS and resolution than the game itself here. Simply criticism a game for how it looks or how it runs does not equate to a criticism of the game as a whole product. Discussions about a game’s rendering and technology and performance can happen and be completely separate from the discussion about how good the game is. They are not intrinsically linked.

This is one of the many problems with modern discourse. A person can’t raise an eyebrow at these super low resolutions for a game that looks awful and isn’t doing anything special technically without someone jumping in to defend it. The technology and the game critique can be distinct conversations!!!!

Nier Automata is a Masterpiece to alot gameplay wise. But I don't care what fanboy of the game wants to argue. It is an embarrassment technical prowess wise. It's embarrassing how bad it is in that sense, I love it and platinumed asap. Loved it but it's definitely a game that I'll ever defend on performance because it's trash in that sense. But I'd never call the game itself anything but great otherwise

DarkZane1825d ago

It's based on a PS3 game, what did you expect? There is so much you can do when the source material look so bad without completely remaking the entire game from scratch.

Darkwatchman1825d ago

It’s not about how bad it looks. It’s about how low resolution it is across all systems. The heart of the criticism is that a game that looks this bad should NOT be running at sub-720p on base Xbox One or sub-1080p on PS4 Pro, especially when Automata looks better and is doing more and runs a higher resolution across all consoles. The resolution profiles do not make sense

gamer78041825d ago

yah I'm holding off until its cheaper, I can play the original at 720p, hopefully they patch this for higher resolution on next gen consoles soon.

Darkwatchman1825d ago

Sad thing is even if they did a hypothetical next-gen patch, considering how awful the current version is with resolution set-ups. I doubt they’d even hit 4K on PS5 or Series X.

Sounds like I’ll be waiting for this to be $10 then

Why Action Game Cameras Suck (Mostly)

One thing about the action game genre that has less evolved and to an extent has even gotten worse is the use of camera in most action games.

SinisterMister1320d ago

Good read. Some of the games mentioned in the article really do put you through your paces in terms of getting the camera right.

Bathyj1320d ago

Manipulating the camera in over the shoulder view games is as much a part of the game play as it is in a first-person shooter. It's not a crutch to have a close-up camera it's a design decision to give the look and feel the developer is going for. God of Wars no cut camera is a feature many loved and gave a great connect to the action and story. Would Last of us's story have the impact it does if it was top-down isometric? I doubt it.

This article feels like an ad for Bayonetta by the end.

Cameras pulled way back so the characters are tiny is fine if that's what you're going for but it doesn't mean all games should be like that.

Nacho_Z1320d ago

I don't have a lot to add to this but I'll say that whenever there's an option to do so I'll always have the camera close in.

Football games are a good example, yes if you zoom out to a birds eye view you can see everything unfolding like a general on a battlefield, and you'll be effective, but it's not fun to play that way in terms of enjoyable gameplay or immersion.

Solitariussaint1320d ago (Edited 1320d ago )

Wow this writer sucks at modern action games. Controlling the camera with the right stick has been a thing since the original DualShock, it's been commonplace ever since.

If you have trouble with God if War '18 and Dark Souls camera angles, then you're pretty much bad at controlling the camera period.

I prefer having the camera up close too for the most part, I wanna see more detail and be up close to the action.

Hofstaderman1319d ago

Why use God of War as a thumbnail? I didn’t have an issue with the camera

The Best Post-Apocalyptic Games To Play in 2022

BLG writes: "It’s hard to get away from the post-apocalyptic genre. It saturates film, television, and video games. Nowadays, it seems like there’s a never-ending supply of destruction. Media, developers, and storytellers are obsessed with how people survive once the world ends. And with good reason! We all love getting to see a somewhat familiar world marred by zombies, the fall of man, or nuclear disaster. There is a certain excitement in imagining what society does once the world has fallen apart"
