Is Returnal Worth $70?

The short answer is yes. The longer, more nuanced answer is also yes. And one answer is maybe.

Reviews seem to agree, will know myself soon enough

zero_jp1838d ago (Edited 1838d ago )

Single player RPG’s for sure are worth $70 because they generally have content out of the you know what and loads of replayability.

This game although a third person shooter is made by Housemarque and they generally make games with lots of replayability as well.

I do get though that at least for us here in the states $70 is asking a bit much. But I guess that’s where the market is headed unfortunately.

Games with any sort of microtransactions should stay at $60. As they have no excuse to charge the extra $10 when they’re going to make millions off of players over time.

crazyCoconuts1838d ago

Returnal is in the top 25 Amazon best sellers for video games right now, at $70. So I guess some people have a different opinion.
Just out of curiosity, would you also say that no steak is worth $70?

Michiel19891838d ago

@zero for you they might be worth it, for Freddy down the street only Fifa/Cod would be worth 70 bucks.

VivaLaManual1838d ago

@zero I paid $50 for SMB 3 in 1990. That would be like $120 now. $70 is NOT asking too much.

ArchangelMike1837d ago

Right now Returnal is sold out at Amazon UK - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pl...

So I guess to us in the UK at least, the answer is a resounding "yes it's worth it!"

Kakashi Hatake1837d ago

Get a different hobby then. Single player games have the biggest budgets. You're saying they should be cheaper than games that are way cheaper to make. Devs should be paid for their work or we can't expect them to make new projects.

ScootaKuH1837d ago

That's incorrect. If an SP game only has around 10 hours of actual game then I'd agree, but when a game such as Persona 5, or even Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which have well over 100 hours of content then they're definitely worth the money. As long as the story is engaging and there's plenty of variation in the gameplay then they absolutely justify their price

mkis0071837d ago

and no MP game is worth even $60 to me...I mean the fact that many of these MP games come out every year should tell you all you need to know about how easy they are to make. Fact is SP games cost more to make. More time and more money.

to each his own.

peppeaccardo1837d ago

I just read that a playthrough is 90-120 minutes long (in which you cannot save).
I am not totally sold on the $70 ... more so here in Italy the base version is €80 ($96 US) meanwhile the deluxe edition is €90 ($108). So for as much as i like shooters and random generated maps, the fleshy colors and gameplay is not worth thata much money FOR ME. Enjoy !!

1837d ago
Profchaos1837d ago (Edited 1837d ago )

So games are worth more than mp games IMO. Rdr2, god of war, tlou games, uncharted games GTA titles prior to GTA online the list goes on I'd take any of those over another battle Royale mp game of the month that will be empty in 6 months making my full price game not just old but old and unplayable while 10 years on I can still play GTA IV and rdr with no Issues and enjoy the story.

raiden_1881837d ago

@BenRC01
100% agree with you. Never paid that amount for a game and never will.

RosweeSon1837d ago

Last of us 2 I’d of happily paid it 30+ hours for one run quality game through and through, GTA5 (yeah I’d have paid it regardless of it’s online mode) absolutely, even Mario odyssey or galaxy 3 if they ever make it. Some games absolutely are worth the £70. For me it’s quality replay ability and hour many hours I’ll get out them, GTA5 7 years (not non stop of course but many many hours) Mario games I go back to happily if they good enough super Mario world mario bros 3 etc timeless classics. So have to disagree some gsmes genuinely do deserve it problem is once they start doing it then the dribble like fifa and assassins creed think they can get away with it each and every year season passes on top. 😑🤣

"Worth" a purchase? Sure - looks like a very cool game.

"Worth" $70 - that depends on the person. As silly as it sounds, I had no issue "risking" $60 on a game that I may enjoy, but $70... may hesitate a bit on buying new titles blindly at that price point.

wwinterj1838d ago

It's all very subjective what's "worth the price". This game is £70 in the UK. That's a £20 increase. At that point I'm out.

SullysCigar1838d ago

You don't have to buy blindly if you check the reviews out. Especially if you have a go-to reviewer you know your preferences align with.

Bathyj1838d ago

Whose buying blindly?
We have more information than ever before. Educate yourself first and then make a decision.

SpineSaw1838d ago (Edited 1838d ago )

No price you pay for ANYTHING is "worth" the price you pay. You purchase a $50,000 car and you don't even need to start the thing up but as soon as you buy it's no longer "worth" the price you paid. This is how the Free Market works so is Returnal "worth" $70? Hell No! But its what we'll pay and I paid it last night and was more than happy to do so.
The good is that in this Free Market world we live in you do have options as you can wait 3 or 4 months and get it at a reduced price or you can go the Food Stamp program way called Game Pass and get a bunch of games to play you never heard of or old outdated games but they are games and you won't be playing'errrrr paying $70 for this game. So if that $10 price increase is a bridge to far then apply for that Food Stamp'errrrr Game Pass rental program I'm sure you'll be happy there.

badz1491837d ago

here we go again with this "is it worth it?" articles. are they gonna make an article or 2 for every single PS5 released from now on?

come on now, I hate the price hike just as much as the next guy but just as much as people trying their best to try and change Nintendo's pricing practices, I also think that all these efforts to try and make Sony revert to $60 is gonna be futile too.

I'm just happy that games' prices on the PS platforms have never stayed at full MSRP for too long before being reduced by 5 to 10 bucks less than 6 months after their releases even for the best sellers. I have been playing the waiting game most of the time on PS4 and PC and I will just continue to do so on the PS5. I will buy the games when I can get them cheaper later down the road. that would mean that I will not gotta play them at launch but that's the sacrifice I'm willing to make. we're just lucky Sony is not as douchey as to make limited runs of physical and digital releases before pulling their games off the store just to create artificial scarcity, unlike THAT other guy also from Japan.

maybe for 1or 2 games I'm really a fan of, I might wanna shell out $70 but can't see myself doing it often.

SpineSaw1837d ago

I agree with your comment and it is what it is that $60 price has stood for years now and it just cost more to make things add to that marketing cost as much as the game itself if not more. A $10 hike is more than fair. You get 10, 20, 30 to hundreds of hrs of game time form games does anyone think that if movies were 10 to hundreds of hrs long you'd pay the $10 to $15 you pay now?.... No! It's sad but fair.

boing11837d ago

Did they pay those 70$ to get a review copy? I think it actually changes a lot when you have to splurge your own money for a game of this type. It does look great but it's still a bullet-hell for 70$. This price just doesn't compute for me.

Do you like third person shooters, a challenge, and own a PS5? I think the sales will answer this question. I’ve always said just wait a bit and get it on sale, but this and Demon’s Souls will likely stay at $70 until the holidays.

outsider16241838d ago

And Ratchet and Clank RA, and Forbidden West.

I guess getting the PS5 later will be an advantage to me..lol.

senorfartcushion1838d ago

You know they’re not insulting the game.

Console stans 😔 So self-defeating.

VersusDMC1838d ago

When New Pokemon Snap and other games that should be 40 release at 60 on Switch to no comparable level of complaint why wouldn't Sony release it at 70?

At least you know playstation games will eventually go down to 20. Switch games will always be around the 50 to 60 dollar range.

jaymacx1838d ago

Everything you said is true but there is also a good trade off with buying Nintendo games, when you sell them you get more money for them usually than most other games.

kayoss1838d ago (Edited 1838d ago )

Thats because Nintendo games very rarely go on sale. But of course, no one whine about that. But if Sony or Microsoft does the same, youll see pitch forks everywhere.

Shiken1837d ago (Edited 1837d ago )

@Kayoss

"If Sony or MS does that, youll see pitch forks."

I guess you only see whay you want to, which is a sad way to live. Anyone who wphld complain are a vocal minority, same as for Nintendo.

Shiken1837d ago

Value is subjective, and depends on the person. People turning this into console war nonsense must feel really insecure for some reasons.

There are people that won't pay full price for any game, and only buy games on sale.

talocaca1838d ago

Meanwhile Nintendo is still charging $60 for Mario Kart 8 (an ancient port) and people seem ok with it 🤷‍♂️

King_Noctis1838d ago (Edited 1838d ago )

The game got 92% on Metacritic. Maybe that’s the reason?

Nyxus1838d ago (Edited 1838d ago )

That's not a reason not to have a price drop, especially since it's a port of a Wii U game. God of War is 94 at Metacritic and it went down to $20 ages ago.

neutralgamer19921838d ago

King

What does that have anything to do with it? Witcher 3 complete edition and god of war both got better than 92 And both can be bought for $20 or less. Mario kart 8 is a port of wiiu to begin with. But nintendo seems to get away with a lot of these things. They literally sold a cardboard box for $60 and called it innovations

Silly gameAr1838d ago

King, that's a reach, and I think you know that. There are games that are rated higher, and go on sale plenty.

F it, I'm just going to say it. That's a dumb comment.

CrimsonWing691838d ago (Edited 1838d ago )

I think it's more that it's Mario Kart and people probably missed out on the Wii U version.

1838d ago
1838d ago
BlaqMagiq11838d ago (Edited 1838d ago )

You can find games with higher Metacritic scores for cheaper. God of War is a 94 Metacritic score and is currently sitting at $20. Persona 5 Royal has a 95 Metacritic and was on sale for as low as $20 on Black Friday and continues to go on sale.

Dumb argument bro.

CaptainHenry9161838d ago (Edited 1838d ago )

Well Returnal has an 86 which is still high LMAO what a silly comment

I can't tell if the name of the game is bad cause it makes me think of urinals or if that title is just bad in general.

StoneyYoshi1838d ago

Returning eternally. Put that together and that comes out to Returnal.

Initially it comes off silly but actually fits since its a roguelike game.

PurpHerbison1838d ago

Sounds better when you put it that way but it still sounds silly rolling off the tongue.

Nacho_Z1838d ago

It's not a particularly elegant title but I always remembered it after seeing it for the first time. Bit like the main character, not necessarily a beauty but memorable and distinctive.

Housemarque Reveals It Has No Plans For Live Service Or Free-To-Play Title

Ilari Kuittinen and Gregory Louden of Returnal developer Housemarque have revealed during an interview with Eurogamer at the studio’s 30th anniversary event last week that it has no plans to develop live-service or free-to-play games, “as long as people are buying premium games.”

kpgs354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

Why would they change? That's not where their expertise is.

Redgrave354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

Didn't stop Sony after acquiring Bluepoint, taking them from renowned remaster and remake quality and sticking them on a GoW live service title that never even went anywhere.

I can't speak to what gives Housemarque the ability to be different, but let's be thankful that they are able to do so in wake of current Sony.

354d ago
derek354d ago

That GoW live service game was the dumbest idea ever. I thought they were remaking Bloodbourne or a Demons souls expansion (covering that broken arch stone). Sony was really panicked after that abk/Microsoft news hit. I hope it was a side project for Bluepoint and that there's another one in the pipeline. That GoW game apparently never got off the ground.

Eonjay354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

Blaming Sony for pursuing Live Service when the top 5 games every month by spend and engagement are live service games is illogical. Gamers are telling Sony where to invest so there is a real disconnect between what is said online and what people actually play. Who should Sony listen to? Clearly the logical decision is to listen to people actually playing games and whether we like it or not Sony would be in vioulation of it duty to its investors if it didn't try to pursue LS. People taking out their fustrations on Live Service games by attacking Sony and using it as the industry whipping boy does not fix the industry. You are just telling the rest of the industry that they can keep doing what they are doing because they aren't called Sony. All I hear people say is that they hate live service but every single month the top games are live service. You are all either lying or you don't know what you are talking about. Sony should pursue both SP and live service games.

RaiderNation376d ago (Edited 376d ago )

It's also still the only new first party IP released this generation on PS5. Everything else has either been sequels or remakes/remasters.

RaiderNation376d ago (Edited 376d ago )

To those who disagree, please let me know what other new IP Sony has released this generation besides Returnal. Go ahead, I'll wait. And Concord doesn't count because Sony recalled it.

RaiderNation376d ago

@Knushwood Butt

Lmao! You're seriously counting Concord? A game Sony pulled off the shelves and refunded gamers after what, two weeks? That is weak!

VersusDMC376d ago

@RaiderNation

For New IP Sony published Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade and Lost Soul Aside on the third party end.

Fairgames, Saros and Intergalactic are the next new IP for first Party.

But does anyone even care about new IP? People love Valve and Nintendo but Valve doesn't even make games anymore and Nintendo doesn't make New IP that often.

StormSnooper376d ago (Edited 376d ago )

It’s a great game.

@raider
But we have had more exclusives than the competition (do they even have any anymore?), and some of those are 2nd party exclusives such as Stellar Blade, Rise of Ronin, Final Fantasy Rebirth, Quantum Error, Neptunia ReVerse, Shines Over: The Damned, etc.

Then we have the first party exclusives such as: Astro Bot, Astro's Playroom (Free with PS5), Demon's Souls (yeah it’s remake but feels like a new game to me), Destruction AllStars (Free with PS Plus), Spider-Man 2, etc.

Then, there is VR games on PSVR2.

Stwert375d ago

I have to agree with some of the comments regarding new IP in the PS5 generation, it has been woefully lacking to say the least. Even worse when you consider the excellent games we got in basically every other PlayStation generation.

On the bright side, Sony has finally noticed, publicly admitted and resolved to rectify the situation. Right now I can think of at least half a dozen new IP in development for PlayStation 5, the only downside is that none of them are near ready for release. So we’ve still got a fair wait.

But you know what they say, good things come to those who wait. I’ve a ridiculous backlog of games to keep me going for quite some time across four platforms. So I’ll wait (im)patiently.

Abear21375d ago (Edited 375d ago )

Stellar blade and Returnal plus GT7 is greater than any “exclusives” trio on any other console. Pro upgrades have been gravy as most of us normie gamers enjoy third party releases too.

I’ll say it again, GTA6 is coming and, like most other games (included those ported from other consoles), Pro will be the best version unless you sit at a desk on PC to play. Oh wait, PC version coming in 6 months to a year, don’t hold your breath.
